Left and Right  function in Java

Is there a method in Java that does the same thing as LEFT and RIGHT in MS Excel apart from substring???
Thanks
SI
Edited by: stoneiidol on Jul 19, 2010 10:16 PM

Let me clarify what i meant with an example.
File 1 has record on the first line like this:1234    Male         KM123File 2 has record on the first line like this:1232    Male      KM123This is an I/O related program. Now, using line.*substring(18,20*) in my program, it will only return KM for the File 1 but gives an java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: for the second file.
What can i do to ensure that despite the difference in the index or length of the line, the program can still read KM??
Hope i made myself clear...

    I hope this is possible. If yes just point me in the right direction if too complex to explain in a couple a lines.

    I could be wrong but I don't think you can. In Java,
    both left and right ctrl keys produce the same key
    code (17). It used to be that these two keys
    were 'hardwired' to the same function on the keyboard
    but I'm not sure if this has changed..I don't think so.
    No, I don't think it's possible.... besides, from a
    user interface point of view, why would you want to do
    that? Do you know any piece of software that does it?jaffab is right, Client Access for AS/400 makes a distinction between the left and right control keys, as do a number of games.
    Unfortunately, the java AWT doesn't :-(
    I would tentatively suggest that it would be possible, using JNI, but I imagine it wouldn't be simple to get a key listener set up in C/C++ that would trigger a java event - being the only way I can think of to differentiate between left and right control keys.
    Given its infeasibility, I'd recommend having the control key do absolutely nothing - far easier to recover from, especially since reset and enter are such diametrically opposed functions!
    Heh, you could always pop up a message box if they press and release control without pressing another key between, saying what to press for reset or accept, respectively :-)
    -Troy
    Random trivia - I think the default set up in Client Access is like that because on the original keyboards used with the green screens, the keys in those corners were reset and enter! Users who had gotten used to typing without looking at the keyboard wanted the functions in the same place, rather than on the keys with the same name.
    IBM never has been happy doing things the same way as everyone else - database 'tables' are called 'files', 'schemas' are 'libraries'... trying to teach Java to one of the ILE/RPG programmers here, and we still have trouble with the english language differences, trying to explain what the programming language is doing!
    Well, that certainly wasn't the few-line post it was supposed to be...

  • ITunes 7 playing only from left and right channels with 5.1 speakers

    I have an SB Audigy 1 sound card with Creative Inspire 5200 digital 5.1 speakers, and iTunes only plays audio from the left and right speakers, and the subwoofer. The other 3 speakers work; I've tested them.

    I am having more or less the same problems as you guys. Currently I use a soundblaster audigy 4 with "CMSS 3D" function ... it used to work with itunes but started to get all weird with the 7.0 update. If nobody knows how to fix this I will have to use 6.xx again :/
    I'd be grateful for any advice as well,

  • Remap Left and Right Command Keys as Different Buttons?

    Hello,
    I'm suffering from the dreaded emacs pinky (yes, I've already changed the caps-lock key to ctrl) and I want to know if it is possible to set the left and right command keys to different options.
    For example, to keep the right command key as command, but have the left function as ctrl.
    Thanks for any help.

    I think the answer is the same as last year.  Don't know of any way to do that.

  • Why after i update my left and right arrow keys stop working

    my left and right arrow keys stoped working after i updated to Mavericks now the dont work

    Hello ccombs2014,
    It sounds like 2 of your keys are not working after updating to Mavericks. I found this section of an article for you to help troubleshoot this issue named:
    One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1381
    Some keys don't work as expected
    From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
    From the View menu, choose Speech.
    Click the Text to Speech tab.
    If "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" option.
    Click the Universal Access pane in System Preferences, click the Keyboard tab.
    Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
    In the Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
    If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard are not working as expected, see Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys.
    If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:
    Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
    Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
    Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer "On" checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer "On" checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
    From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
    If the keyboard is connected and detected by Mac OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.
    Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working.  If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly.  Use Mac OS X: How to troubleshoot a software issue to isolate the software issue that may be causing the keys to not respond.

  • Trackpad won't move curser mouse does. Left and right click working fine

    Hello everyone,
    I have a problem. Out of nowhere my trackpad won't move the curser anymore. Connecting a USB mouse does. Left and right click are still working fine. Any ideas of how to fix it?
    Thanks
    Dave

    Hey there DaveDaMac,
    It sounds like your built in track pad is not responding at all, but your USB mouse works without issue. I recommend the troubleshooting in this article for you named:
    Intel-based Mac notebooks: Troubleshooting unresponsive trackpad issues
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1248
    Try disconnecting the MagSafe connector from the computer and check the trackpad function. If the trackpad becomes responsive again, improper grounding may be the issue.
    If a two-prong AC plug is being used with the power adapter, try using the three-prong power cable that shipped with your computer and plug it into a grounded outlet.
    If the issue persists, make sure the third prong is present and do not use an adapter to enable the three-prong adapter to be used in a two-prong outlet. Note that the ground in the three-prong outlet may not be connected. This is common in older homes or buildings with replaced outlets. In these situations, the three-prong power cable will not improve trackpad responsiveness.
    If a grounded outlet is not available, rest your palm on the palm rest when using the trackpad. This should enable the trackpad to function properly.

  • Windows key + left and right arrows not working with RemoteApp windows

    My office is deploying RemoteApps to replace certain locally installed applications.  I, and many of my coworkers, have 2-3 monitors and the Windows
    + left and right "snap" function has been an extremely convenient way to juggle multiple windows across multiple monitors.  Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work with RemoteApp windows.  Does anyone know a way to get this working?

    Hi,
    Based on my test,  I agree with Keith Langmead, it seems Windows key + left or right key cannot work with remoteapp.

  • Left and right click at the same time?

    Is there a way to get the magic mouse to do left and right click at the same time? Useful for well.. gaming.

    Check out the free Magicprefs software. You can then assign different functions to different clicks. swipes, taps, etc. There is an option for a two finger click and one of those options is "hold both right & left". It's free so you have noting to lose.

  • Left- and right arrow key out of order

    Hi,
    I'm afraid to need your help again. My left and right arrow keys doesn't work as they're supposed to. While can neither navigate through my desktop icons nor the buttons in any dialog nor the text I'm just writing. The cursor stops blinking as soon as I press one of these keys so the system recognizes the key press but the cursor doesn't move. Showkey returns the keycodes 105 left and 106 for the right arrow key.
    While logging in with LXDM im able to navigate back and foth while entering my password as well as the keys work properly in tty. It seems to be only LXDE, where the keys are not working.
    Furthermore my function keys like mute, volume up and down and so on aren't working too. I don't know if both errors are relatet to another.
    Maybe anyone has an idea what I might do to fix this?

    no, you have to know it.
    i meant: when you login with lxdm, do you have a choice between lxde-session and openbox-session (or sth similar) because there's a difference how openbox gets started and which config files are parsed.
    It's an lxde-session. And LXDE uses openbox-lxde as displaymanager.

    The part of the rc.xml I posted beforehand is the only one in that file that is tagged with <keyboard> and there is no binding for the left or right arrow key. There are some in combination with the control or shift key but that shouldn't do anything regarding my problem.

    Absolutely.
    Steff435 wrote:What do you mean with "the text I'm just typing"? You can't move the text cursor in the textbox in your browser using the keys?
    Yes, exactly.
    Steff432 wrote:I don't use lxdm, but I guess that doesn't use the default Gtk text entry widget, while most Gtk-based browsers as far as I know do, so it might be related to Gtk in some way. Or do you use a Qt browser? Have you tried the keys in non-Gtk software?
    I use firefox which is, as far as I know, Gtk-based. But I installed QupZilla and gabe it a try. Unfortunatelly the same error shows up there.
    I don't know if I'm right but lxde should be gtk-based itself and running a non-Gtk software in gtk-based lxde would show up the same gtk-errors to, wouldn't it? So eventually I'd have to try a non-Gtk software in a non-Gtk desktop environment in order to check whether the error doesn't show up under non-gtk software?

  • Left and right bracket

    Hi, I know how you obtain the left and right bracket on the keyboard of my Imac Intel:
    shift command and ) = ]
    shift command and ( = [
    but I don't know how to get the left and right bracket WITH ONE KEYSTROKE.
    And that's something I need to know to configer my Wacom Intuos 4 Tablet.
    Can anyone help for this?
    Thanks in advance and kind regards
    L.
    I use a Belgian keyboard-setting on an Imac-Intel Osx 10.6.7

    Resolving keyboard mapping variations is usually a fairly easy matter of trial and error.
    The square parantheses used for trim operations are directly to the right of the P key on a US/English keyboard.  On a Norwegian keyboard, directly to the right of the P is the Å key. Does it perform the same function as the [ left parantheses?
    Alternately, square parantheses on the Norwegian keyboard are generated with Alt Gr-8 and Alt Gr-9.  Do they work?

  • Left and right trim all af:inputText fields

    Hi,
    ADF 10.1.3.4
    we have a requirement to left and right trim all input text fields in the application. Is there an easy way to do this?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Hi...
    If you want to get the values after a request was send, you can do it simply in the following way:
    import java.util.Iterator;
    import java.util.Map;
    import java.util.Map.Entry;
    import javax.faces.context.FacesContext;
    import javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest;
    HttpServletRequest request = (HttpServletRequest)FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getExternalContext().getRequest();
    Map<String, String[]> requestParameters = request.getParameterMap();
    Iterator iter = requestParameters.entrySet().iterator();
    while (iter.hasNext()) {
      Entry entry = (Entry)iter.next();
      String key = (String)entry.getKey();
      String value = ((String[])entry.getValue())[0];
      if (key.contains("<Your HTML-Element Id>")) {
        // trim your value
    }These code you can put into your submitAction in the backing Bean where your inputfields are locaded. In the request are a lot of data and you dont want do trim all of this. The <Your HTML-Element Id>-String is a string you can locate your inputfields. For example "form1.inputField1". If you render the page, you can look at the HTML-Element Ids to get your Ids. Maybe you can use "key.contains("form1")" to get all fields in Form1.
    Best regards
    Majo
