Left command key has broken off - how to replace?

So a few days ago I caught my left command key with my nail and the top half of it lifted away from the mechanism underneath. I pressed it until I heard it click back into place and then merrily continued using my computer as usual. Today I was typing and the whole thing just came off under my thumb, which is annoying to say the least.
The biggest issue is that as I was trying to reconnect key to mechanism, the little criss-cross doohickey came off as well! I am left with a little silicon nipple which, while titilating, is not really conducive to the kind of high volume typing I'm used to!
I really don't want to pay 40 bucks to get Apple Support to replace a single key for me - I just need to know how to do it myself. It's only one key and I could probably learn to get used to using the right one, but it would be easier if I could just click it back into place. It's not broken, the mechanism itself seems fine and the key works if I push the little nubbin, so I'm not concerned about that. I just think $40 is too much to pay someone to click a key back into place! I wasn't even doing anything out of the ordinary with it like trying to remove or replace the keys T^T
I'm especially gutted since I just bought a new iPhone from the same Apple shop I bought my laptop like three days ago - if I'd known my laptop was gonna bust I'd have saved myself the money and spent it on repairs instead! Fml, right?
Any help you folks can offer would be very gratefully received - if it comes down to it and I have to fork out the money then I'll do so, but I'd like to explore community options first on the off chance that someone knows how to replace the mechanism and key without having to lug my computer all the way into the city to get it fixed xD
Thanks in advance!
Ehryn

It's pretty easy to do, get something thin like a credit card and run it along the bottom and sides of the keyboard and there are several bracket things that will pop the keyboard up when you pressure them. There will be a couple of cables to clip out behind it so lift it up gently.
You should be able to find a video on youtube anyway!
Try this site for the keyboard http://www.replacementlaptopkeys.com/toshiba_qosmio_laptop_key.html
It shouldn't be too hard to track a replacement down.

  • Mid 2011 macbook air. command key has popped off and is now missing the 2nd metal bar. can this be replaced?

The command key popped off my mid 2011 macbook air. It is meant to have two metal bars but can't find the 2nd one. I have clicked it back into place but if I press the button at the bottom the top pops up and I'm worried that if I don't fix the problem I may end up losing the key altogether!
Can you buy replacement metal bars? should I just remove the other bar completely?
    Thanks in advance.

Sorry, must have been the crackpipe I smoked last night! LOL
You won't see anything in the Application Support --> Bootcamp folder unless you have previously downloaded the Windows Support Software. Good find.
    ADDENDUM STEP:
This step should be placed between 9-10.
Open Bootcamp Assistant. Uncheck everything BUT, "DOWNLOAD THE LATEST WINDOWS SUPPORT SOFTWARE FROM APPLE". You will be prompted to burn the image to a CD/DVD or save to a USB Key. Save the image to a USB key. This will format your USB key properly in preparation for the files. The download commences and if you're lucky, the files will simply be saved to your USB key without having to manually copy them over to the key using the steps above.
IMPORTANT - Even if the support software hangs when its being saved to the USB key, you should now be able to navigate to the directory and see the image. Follow the steps above.
    Apologies for missing this.

  • F12 key has fallen off. How do I reattach it?

My f12 key has fallen off. How do I reattach it? It seems like the hooks on the keyboard itself are slightly bent, but I'm not sure if thats the design. Is this normal, or something I need to go get replaced?
Here's a picture that shows the hooks if you zoom in.

  • Left Command Key

    Hey Everyone,
I just recently adverted over to the "Mac Experience", and I have to say, I'm really liking it.
I have a MacBook from late 2008 (purchased around a year ago), and just now, the left command key broke. The scissor assembly is broken (very small piece of plastic is chipped), and I wonder how much it'll actually cost to get that little tiny piece of plastic to be fixed.
Do any of you guys have any pointers for me?

    Hi tjasko,
    There's a few options:
1.) Are you near an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider? When I worked at an Apple Store (Genius Bar) we use to carry all sorts of spare keyboard assemblies for situations like this (broken scissors, missing/worn keycaps, etc.) We never charged anyone for the swap unless it was half the keyboard and it looked like a tiger mauled it off.
2.) You can buy replacement scissors, yourself. The website iFixit.com sells them, they're bit costly on an individual basis... though.
3.) You can contact AppleCare and arrange a mail service. If you're outside of the one year limited warranty (sounds like you might be) and don't have APP this would be a pretty costly option. If you have APP I see no reason why they wouldn't service the machine for you but considering the hassle of shipping, being without your machine and all that other stuff, the other two options would probably be a better scenario.

    Hi:
This website has videos on how to reattach keys.
If you put the full model number in the site, you will find the video for your key type.

However, My carrier (orange) will b picking up my broken iPhone and I am unsure how to secure the content and icloud data on the broken phone. Hi Gazpan,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I recommend using the steps in this article to back up your iPhone if possible:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
You may also find this advice helpful for your situation:
What to do before selling or giving away your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5661
If you no longer have your iOS device
If you're using iCloud and Find My iPhone on the device, you can erase the device remotely and remove it from your account by signing in to icloud.com/find, selecting the device, and clicking Erase. When the device has been erased, click Remove from Account.
If you're unable to complete either of the above steps, you should change your Apple ID password. Changing your password won't remove any personal information that is cached on the device, but it will make sure that the new owner can't delete your information from iCloud.
    Cheers,
    Jeremy

  • My Left Command key shows the desktop and can't be used for other functions

My Left Command key shows the desktop when pressed in.
So if I try and copy (command + C) I end up staring at the desktop....This only happens with the left key. When checking System Preferences, none of the settings in keyboard preferences seems to be relevant. I have reset the keyboard setting to default, but it makes no difference. Also this only happens with my user, when changing user on same laptop I get the normal behaviour for the Left command key
I am using a Macbook Pro i7 (2011) Yosemite and am upto date with all software

    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

  • Left command key does not work

    Hi all,
I have problems with my left command key. I have had my computer for 1 year now - the fan wasn't working so I reset the PRAM, didn't work so sent it to the Apple technicians who replaced the fan. Since then, I am unable to combine the left command key with any of the 3rd keyboard row keys such as "C", "V", "N" or "X". Consequently I cannot copy, paste or get a new window. It occurs with all applications. The right command key works fine. The top and middle keyboard rows work fine with the left command key. Is this a software problem or should I return it to the Apple technician?
    Thanks,
    Vincent.

Take it back. They either haven't got the keyboard connected in right when they put it back together, or there is problem with the keyboard itself.

  • My Macbook Air hinge is broken. How to replace it.

  • Command Key has to be released and pressed each time, holding down command key for multiple commands ignoring all after first keystroke.  Have tried this in safe mode - still broken.

This problem has just cropped up - pretty sure it's after the 10.7.3 upgrade.
Scenario: I'm in pages and I'm doing a search. I need to find multiple instances of my search word.
I hold down the command key and press the 'g' key - for find again. It works.
While still holding down the command key - I hit the 'g' key again to do another find again. But instead of executing teh find again, hitting teh 'g' key the sdecond time types "g' over last search item found, acting as if teh command key was not still pessed.
This is happening in DreamWeaver CS5.5, the latest Pages, and the latest BBEdit. Haven't checked all apps.
This IS NOT a problem in the finder though - where command-tabbing brings up the app list properly, and tabs through while holding down teh command key and repeatedly hitting the tab key.
I restarted in safe mode. Still a problem.
First I cleaned the command key, then re-seating the key. I swapped keyboards, Still a problem.
Did a PRAM reset, which didn't fix anything.
I can't find any other post regarding this issue. Been using the mac for over 25 years and I've never seen this one.

This turns out to be a problem with my KVM switcher. The USB port on the switcher for the keyboard is failing - hence the intermittent reaction to the command-key presses.
I connected the keyboard directly to my mac and the problem was resolved - sorry I didn't check that before I posted this.

  • Left shift key just fell off

    Hello,
My left shift key (Dutch keyboard, small shift key) fell of and I cannot get in back. It keeps falling of. It looks like a small pin at the back of the key broke... strange.
Can you tell me how to get an new one? My apple will only order a complete keyboard set.
    Regards,
    Thomas

    Thomas,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Keyboard parts are not sold separately. If you want to get a working keyboard you will probably have to replace the complete keyboard. BTW this is the case with every keyboard manufacturer I've run across for the past 20+ years.

    Roger
