Left fan spins slower than right fan

Hello there..
This morning suddenly I noticed something peculiar. I have this iStat Fan Sensor running in the menu bar and found out that the Left Fan spins at 236rpm and the Right Fan at 5996 - 6005rpms. Perhaps it used to be 2400 or 3000 rpms in avg. most of the time for both fans in an idle state.
I'm beginning to think something is wrong.
Is it normal or something really going wrong? I have my MBP 2010 15" model serviced back in 2011 and they changed my logic board. Never had any issue about this fan issue since then.
So any idea what is going on?

Just to update....
Well I shutdown my computer and let it rest for 2 hours and then turned it back on this morning and it has been running since this morning and now it seems to be everything ok.
Never did my hardware test nor SMC reset.
So far so good but will wait and see over night and will update.

My new iPAD has uneven brightness on screen. Left half is much brighter than right half. Any suggetions to fix it or shall I go for warranty replacement?

If restarting or rebooting doesn't resolve the issue and the device is new, I would contact Apple or wherever you bought the iPad, show it to them and if they can't figure out, ask for a replacement.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Left fan 6000 rp Right fan -1 RPM BROKEN?

    Hello
I*ve been noticing that my Macbook 2ghz Intel Core 2 Duo (the old white one with FW400) has been getting louder the last few weeks. The fan is running constantly.
Today I checked with the Fan control app and the program says that my left fan runs with 600 rpm and my right one with -1 rpm
Does this mean my fan is broken or can do some software adjustments anywhere.
    Best greetings
    David

There is only one fan in that machine.  The app you're using is designed for use on any Mac.  The 15 & 17" MacBook Pros have two fans.
However, your single fan should not be running at 6000 RPM (you mention "600", but I would imagine you meant 6000) unless there is a significant amount of activity going on.  Are you doing anything in particular when you start to hear the fan running loudly (e.g. watching videos, playing games, etc)?

  • Hot & Loud - Left Fan staying at over 6000RPM

For about a week or more now I've notice my MBP being extra loud and extra hot. I did have an issue with an errant app (APC PowerChute) that was maxing out one core. I uninstalled it and it did improve, both fans no longer stayed on and the temp no longer hit past 200f.
However that didn't seem to resolve it completely, the temp will jump up to 175f-190f after only a few minutes of being turned on and nothing but Mail open. That is after it has been shutdown completely all night.
iStat Pro tells me my Right Fan is running at just over 2K RPMs, while the Left Fan is over 6.1K which is very loud. The fans occasionally make odd sounds that make me think at least one of them is dying.
I have reset the SMC which had no effect. Running "top -o cpu" shows only around 20% total CPU usage.
While I cannot confirm the timing of these issues, they did seem to coincide with when I updated to 10.6.3 on release.
I don't know if its related, but I have also noticed that if I leave it on when I go to bed, when wake it the next day it has either restarted, or attempted to (with a dialog on the screen that X application prevented a shutdown). This seems like it would make sense that if the machine got to hot, it would try to shutdown.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

If yours is one of the current 2.53ghz unibody MBPs with non-user removable battery then it only actually has one fan, dwight. (iStat Pro still reports a "right fan" spinning at close to zero revs, but it is a figment of the program's imagination!) The single "left" fan is actually located in the centre of the rear of the computer (no chance that something is blocking the vents there?) .
(If, instead, you have one of the earliest unibody 2.53 MBPs with a *user removable battery* then you can ignore the stuff that follows, as those models do indeed, have two fans, and the fact that one was running and the other was not would certainly be a hardware issue)
The fact that the fan is running at full speed AND the temps are high strongly suggests to me that this is probably an issue related to excessive processor use rather than anything else, but your reported CPU usage is quite low. Could you check this using Activity Monitor following the steps outlined at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1473 just to be sure that you don't have a "CPU hog" of some kind.
If it was a 'temperature related" shutdown occurring at night no process would be able to prevent it. Such shutdowns involve processes built into the processor itself and aren't over-ridden by the normal software shutdown routines.

  • Replaced Left Fan now fan wont turn on

I have a macbook pro 15'' Early 2009 (2.66 GHZ). I am running Lion (10.7.5) I recently replaced the left fan in my computer due to it not working well. My computer seems to run fine, however, the left fan will not turn on.  I double checked to make sure the connection was good, and it was. The fan was brand new, and did not seem to be damaged, and I cannot figure out what is wrong with it. I am out of my warranty, and would prefer to avoid taking my computer in to the apple store if possible, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

I tried doing the thing to reset the SMC, there wasn't anything to signal that it reset, but I followed the instructions so Im assuming it worked.  didnt change anything.  Um for the logic board that is a possibility, but the old fan was on, it was just gradually running slower and slower until it was pointless to even use it as it would sometimes have trouble starting.  If I push it with my finger it doesn't spin very long, I think it might just need oiling, but it might be easier to just get this new fan working, if possible.  This new fan isn't running at all, or making any attempt to run.  Is there some way to tell if the logic board is working properly?

  • MSI GS70 - Left fan doesn't do anything

I just bought my GS70 today and got everything updated, but the only problem I seem to have so far is the left fan. The right fan is working just fine but it seems that the left one never seems to boot up or initialize. It ran once when I was running the driver disc but that was about it; am I missing a driver or something? Any kind of help to fix this would be appreciated as I am worrying that if I do anything it'll put too much stress on the single right fan. I have yet to do any kind of games that require a bit of power yet.
Update: Ran CSGO and the left fan kicked in without a problem, but when I tried to play Assassin's Creed Unity the left fan wouldn't turn on at all, leaving the right one kicking and without support and raping my FPS.

left fan will be idle when Nvidia gpu isnt active, since when intel hd is runing only right fan will go on and off when needed while left fan is idle but once you launch a game left fan will begin to spin to since thats when nvidia gpu is active so you dont have to worry about it left fan heatsink is installed ontop of nvidia gpu chip while right fan heatsink is ontop of cpu chip thats why left is idle.

  • Cannot detect left fan

    Hi,
I just bought a macbook pro 13" retina display. Every time I see a video in youtube right fan starts running faster. I executed hardware test and I got no error. However I executed an fan speed controler app and it could not detect left fan.
    Is it really not working?
    Best regards
    Jorge

Thanks for your help,But I watched some videos where it seems to have two of them, for example at this keynote: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxDZR4hAu3Q
    Or the one below:

How can I make sure I should not have two fans running?
    Thanks in advance

  • Left fan in my MBP makes some weired noise when shutting down

Hi, my model is 2.4 Late 2008, few days ago the left side of my mbp dropped on the table because I forgot to take out the headphone when I stood up.. Now every times I turn off the computer, the left fan makes noises that sound like the fan is touching to the cover (when the fan slows down). What should I do now?
    Thank you very much.

  • Macbook Pro - Left Fan

    Hello.
So I got my brand new macbook pro 15inch on wednesday. and today, I noticed that the left fan is making a soft 'ticking' noise. I have not hit the mac or damaged it in any way. (Treated it like a new born baby)
So I did the live chat and the woman told me to reset the SMC (which I did) and reset the PRAM (which I also did). I can only hear the buzzing when I put my ear to the left side of the mac. Nothing wrong with the right. Also: When the fans turn up, I can hear the buzz a bit louder. (again when I put my ear next to it).
Oh and finally: I can hear a sort of high frequency sound from the left.
    Help?

  • Left fan on MacBook Pro 0000 rpm

After using my MB for about one hour, i noticed my SMC fan control status stated my left fan was not running while my right fan was running at 3800 -3900 rpm, and the temp. was at 170 degrees. My first thought was the fan died. I am currently in China where there are only 3 Apple stores in this country and no where near where I am, I don't get back to the U.S for another month and I need to use my MB everyday for work. Can I have some suggestions on what to do how to improve my MB so i don't mess anything up permanently . I also have been using a notebook fan for help.

Recently updated to snow leopard in June.

    8 month old battery

Unfortunately, I would have to very strongly urge you to STOP USING IT IMMEDIATELY!
You are likely to cause damage to the important & expensive components. Replacing them means replacing the whole logic board. A cost almost the same as purchasing a new MBP.
You are seriously playing with fire if you turn it on.
Replacing the fan yourself is not too difficult, and you could probably pick up a replacement fan off eBay for ~$20.
(Don't forget to update your paypal address).

  • Really weird left fan noise

I know some folks have already reported the left fan being noisy, but try this and see what you hear. With MBP in your lap, like if you are sitting in a recliner with your feet up, take the back left corner of the MBP slowly up to your right ear. Listen for a very loud pinging noise from the back left side of the MBP. It sounds like something is hitting the blades of a fan. My wife could here this across the living room with the tv on.
I have recorded this using garage band and the built in mic and will upload the mp3 when I'm back home tonight.
I took it to the Genius bar and they said they need to hear more about this before they can do anything. It was hard to hear in the noisy store.
I was able to get two of the store machines to make the same noise by slowly lifting the back left corner up to my ear with the bottom right corner still on the table.
I may shoot an imovie of the exact position to make it more clear, but obviously this is a problem.
Please try and let me know if your MBP makes this noise.

Here is the promised link to the noise mp3.

  • Left fans don't work ?

My brand new Macbook Pro 13'', has a problem, I observed that it gets hot very much (i think) however the fans on the left side don't blow air out while the right ones do. Do left fans blow out air ?

    denozi wrote:
Do fans take in air from left side and gives out from the right side ?
No. In your case the fan (singular) draws in air from both sides as well as the left rear and blows it out the right rear.
First take a close look at the excellent picture clintonfrombirmingham posted of the inside of your rMBP. Look at the left and right edges and you'll see very fine slots in the case. Air is sucked in there and is drawn over the interior parts by the fan to remove their heat.
Second, recognize that you're looking at the bottom, so, with the Mac right side up, the fan is on your right. The 15" rMBP has both built-in graphics and an NVIDIA GeForce GT graphics coprocessor which requires a second fan on the left side to keep cool. When you lift up the screen, you can see vent openings at the hinge, which the fan is pointed at and which you can also see in the picture.
The fan will respond to heat buildup during use and those vents on each side are very close to the bottom and easy to block unless the rMBP is either on a hard, flat surface or is raised. If all the vents are clear and it's still getting warm, either take it in to Apple, as clintonfrombirmingham says, or try smcFanControl, which you can use to speed up the fan beyond what Apple considers cool-enough. But don't over-do it; too much can wear the fan and suck in extra dust.

  • Left fan got louder after around 2 months

hey. I just discovered that after around 2 months of use my left fan got louder. Is this normal ? I mean it can be normal if you use a laptop for around 2 years, but it is kind of weird that this happens just after 2 months. seriously my fan was very very quite when i got my macbook pro, but now it seems to become more and more anoying plus the freaking whine...
    Regards,
    Martin

    Hey Martin,
To stop the whine use a program called 'Quietmacbook' Google it and you will find it, this stops the whine by loading the 2 processors but don't use it on battery life otherwise it will reduce your battery time, as for the fan, i have week build 28 on my macbook pro and the left fan is always on after the firmware update to stop the so called mooing issues, its probably the amoutn of dust in there which makes the fan spin faster to push out the hot air

  • Is the left fan suppose to be continually on

I've noticed that the left fan on my MBP is always on regardless and the right fan only comes one when i'm doing heavy tasks and wanted to know if this is within specs. im basically checking out my MBP for any errors as i still have a week to decide if i want to return it even though i don't. Another thing i was gonna dd was the whine issue but since the security update i havent noticed it again. So is the fan issue within spec?. Anyone have a MBP whose left fan isn't constantly on?
PS i dont mean those whose fans don't come on at all, cos thats a defect.

Yes, it's always running softly, and is supposed to run that way. All Powerbooks before it had the same soft fan running. Why are you looking for flaws that don't exist? Is your Macbook Pro doing what you need it to do for you? Then just enjoy it.
