Left press trackpad quiet click

Hi all,
I have a problem. Yesterday randomly my trackpad stopped working. When you physically press down on the bottom left and right corners of the trackpad it makes a loud click noise. Now though only the right corner makes a loud click... the left corner is slightly stiffer and makes a quieter click.
I have booked a genius repair session, but if its something i can fix at home - i would be grateful for your suggestions. I've heard stories about battery swell etc, but theres no physical sign of that from underneath the unibody or on top of the trackpad, but because the trackpad doesnt push down far, im guessing it could be a battery swell.
Anyway yeah, im slightly worried i look after my laptop and this is the only problem ive had ;lll

I've had similar problems with my 1st gen MacBook Pro off and on for the last year or so.
Started out with the trackpad button no longer feeling like it was going through its full range of motion when depressed.
Then would occasionally become unresponsive. In other words, the cursor would not select when the button was depressed.
Then it would get stuck in an always on state so that the cursor was selecting all the time without the button being depressed.
In addition to these trackpad button problems I've also had issues with the keyboard becoming unresponsive. I don't know if this indicates an actual problem with the keyboard or just that when the trackpad button is always on that any keyboard inputs are swamped out by the computer registering constant trackpad input.
I've tried various software related fixes such as safe-mode restarts and creating new user accounts, reinstalling the system, etc. Haven't helped.
I've noted that many threads on this issue, including this one, seem to point to faulty batteries putting pressure on the underside of the trackpad and its connectors.
However, I've had my battery replaced and I still have symptoms. In fact, have the same problems even with the battery removed from the computer. I also have the same problems with an external mouse hooked up and "ignore trackpad when mouse is present" selected in system prefs.
Probably need to take it in for repair. Too bad I didn't get apple care.

  • Trackpad stopped clicking - MacBook Pro 2010

    Hi everyone,
I have a problem with my Macbook Pro... I was working on some designs last night when all of a sudden the trackpad stopped clicking/responding. Even the movement is random and unresponsive.
I was wondering if anyone had experienced the same problem and whether there is a solution...  I have a USB keyboard and a magic mouse... but that kinda takes away the point of having a portable machine.
    Thanks for any help

It does say that my battery needs servicing... Was going to buy one as I have updated the RAM from 4GB to 8GB.
Wasnt sure if the Genius Bar would help me having upgrading the RAM...
There was a note that the battery may have swelled and pressed underneath the trackpad.
I have left the laptop off over night (to let the battery cool down) and still the trackpad wouldnt click...

  • Trackpad will click and select but will not move cursor

After breaking the trackpad in my early 2008 MBP I replaced it.
Upon startup the trackpad will click and select but will not move cursor... I have tried all system resets short of wiping and reinstalling OS.
    Any suggestions?

Because the click has to deal with a physical button press while the movement has to deal with the trackpad detecting the movement of your finger on it.
Just for giggles, if you hold down the Option key on bootup and get to the boot menu on it, does the mouse work then?  If so, then it's an OS issue (could be a setting or some .plist that's jacked up.

  • Top of trackpad not clicking?

I got a new 15" Macbook Pro yesterday, and whilst playing around I've noticed that near the top of the trackpad (about a CM from the top) doesn't press down to click.. is this a problem or are they all like this?
    Thanks

They are all like that. It is hinged at the top. So no clicking there, only the bottom.

  • OSX Release 10.4.7 and PB 12" Trackpad (right click)

Alright, I'm absolutely mystified by this. All the Macbooks and Macbook Pros have this wonderful feature whereby pressing two fingers to the trackpad and clicking brings up a "right click". Up until release 10.4.7, this was only on the 17" Mackbook Pro (and perhaps the Macbooks), but with release 10.4.7, all the Intel based Apple laptops have this as an option.
Here's the mystery of it, why on earth can Apple not make this available for 2005+ PPC Powerbooks??? These models already support the two finger scroll out of the box. The trackpads are already sensing two finger touches. What is the difficulty with having the two finger sense plus a "click" from the trackpad register as a 'right click'?
Third party utilities (iScroll2, Sidetrack, etc.) either don't support the 2005+ PPC Powerbooks or require a "hot corner" assignment which I find cludgey. I've tried installing every single one out there and none of them resolve this issue.
Is there any workable solution to this? I use right click all the time and find the CTRL+click tedious and archaic.
    Powerbook G4 12" 1.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

There seemed to be an issue with my wireless mouse that was causing the issue with my OS. I unplugged my usb hub, and it worked again.

  • After upgrade from 34 to 35, control click still opens new tab but new tab won't load upon selection. i have to click address and press enter or click go

I've used Firefox for many years, I really like it and have been readily recommending it to others.
However after finally upgrading to 35.0.1 from 34.x I now have a very annoying and time-consuming issue.
So much so that I'm thinking of attempting a downgrade!
I didn't really want to upgrade but Firefox kept bothering me and I inadvertently accepted. Is there a way to switch this upgrade reminder off?
Anyway, previously I would Ctrl-click a link and it would open a new tab but not jump to it. It would remain unloaded until I clicked it. Then it would load as normal.
After the upgrade, I Ctrl-click a link and it still opens a new unloaded tab. So far, so good. Now however, when I click the new unloaded tab, it just sits there and does nothing. I have to click the URL in the address bar and either press <Enter> or click the 'Go' arrow.
I use this feature sometimes 100s of times a day so this is extremely annoying as it adds considerable time and extra clicks to each new link I click.
I'm wondering if it could be a problem with one of my plugins. Can I temporarily disable them all at once to see if that's it?
I will try disabling the tab related plugins.
I've tried toggling 'Don't load tabs until selected' on the Tabs page from Tools menu, Options.
Any help would be thoroughly appreciated as I would like to return to being a Firefox Fan

It is unlikely this issue is to do with Firefox upgrading. Firefox 36 will come out any day soon you should then be on that rather than considering an outdated Firefox 34 which is now not secure, and not supported.
    * See don't [[Install an older version of Firefox]]
You have not listed your plugins, and Yes you could try using Firefox's add-on manager to make sure they are all set as click to activate or even temporarily set as never activate.
I am not familiar with the add-on
    * UnloadTab 0.24.7 https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/unloadtab/
That certainly may be part of the problem try deactivating that with Firefox's addon manager. For all I know this may be the intended behaviour of that addon.
Also troubleshoot the issue with Firefox's safe mode, remembering that does NOT disable plugins you will still need to do that manually.

Please post back with how you get on and what you have tried, Including upgrading to Firefox 36 when that is available.

  • HT1343 On my 4 1/2 year old Macbook I could select multiple files  by highlighting a file and then moving cursor over a file lower in the list, and pressing shift-control-click. I can't do that in now with Mac Pro.  What am I doing wrong?

ghlighting a file and then moving cursor over a file lower in the list, and pressing shift-control-click. I can't do that in now with Mac Pro.  What am I doing wrong?

Holding down the control key will invoke "right-click."
Depending on the View, holding down Shift will with either toggle the selection (Icon View), or it will make a continuous selection from the previous selection (List View or Column View).
The only way to make a continuous selection in Icon View is to drag out a selection marquee around or through the icons.
I can't remember the behavior of previous OS's.

  • My trackpad right click is'nt working?

This happened suddenly and without my disabling it. I have checked apple/preferemces/trackpad and the secondary box is ticked. Can anyone help?

System Preferences > Trackpad > Point & Click > Secondary click
Make sure that it is enabled. Click the down arrow for options.

  • My trackpad is clicking on it's own.  How do I fix this?

When operating my Mac Air, the trackpad will click on it's own, highlighting text and "right" clicking without me performing those commands.  It will also select and drag objects around the screen.  I've unchecked all of the point and click functions as well as the scroll and zoom options, but my problem remains.
    Please help!

Go step by step and test.
    1. Restart
    2. Shut down the computer.
Clean the trackpad with moist not wet microfiber cloth.
System Preferences > Point & Click
Try turning off three finger dragging and then turning it on after  testing.
    3. Is there any Bluetooth device nearby with failing batteries? If so, replace the batteries.
       4. Reset PRAM:   http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
    5. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    6. Close all windows and quit all applications.
Click the spotlight -the magnifying glass icon- in the menu bar. Enter Disk utility in the box.
Select Disk Utility from the drop down. When the Disk utility window opens up,
select  Macintosh HD, then First Aid.
         Click Repair Disk Permissions button.
         Ignore the  time remaining estimate.
Last 1 minute may take longer.
If this does not solve the problem, you may have to take the computer to the Apple store
    to have it checked out.
    Best.

  • My Macbooks trackpad dosent click on the home screen or anywhere else.

My MacBooks trackpad dosent click anything on the home screen it can only move.
I've rebooted it once but the same thing happens. Can anyone please please help!!!!!!!!

This happened to me recently and it was because my battery was swollen.  I called Apple Care and it was out of warranty so they said I had to purchase a new battery, but if you plead your case and ask them to make an exception they just might!  They did for me!  They had told me they only replace for free if the battery is so swollen that it gets stuck in there, but they would have you take it to a Service Center to have it looked at.  I plead my case and they made an exception for me.  It never hurts to ask!

  • Quiet clicking noise

my macbook pro has just started recently making this soft, quiet clicking noise in the background. its a constant noise and it kinda sounds like the wheel of fortune spinning around but its just more silent. anyone have any ideas?

This may be a noise that is associated with these hard drives that is quite normal. See this discussion:

Does this sound like it? Hope it's a good noise....

  • After 10.9.3 update MacBook Air 11" trackpad secondary click won't respond at all?

    Hello!
I updated to 10.9.3 earlier this week on my MacBook Air 11" and things were running smoothly but then this morning I was cleaning up my bookmark folders and tried to use the secondary click on my trackpad (right-click, which is set to the bottom of the trackpad) it would not respond. I closed out of what I was doing and I tried to close applications on the dock using the secondary click method as I have in the past and it just does not respond.
I made sure I had it selected in system preferences as the method to use on the track pad after check it out in different applications. Unselected it reselected it. No change.
This macbook had been restarted a couple of times since the update too.
I don't get how it will work and then not work. So lame.
Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

The full release of 10.9.3 is available from App Store now. You can re download the full version from your Purchase tab in App Store. After download there will be Install OSX Maverics in Applications folder. Before installing OSX on top of the one on your system, copy the a install aoSX Mavericks to your external drive or any location. You can copy it to Applications folder for reinstall after that if you want.
The new download will be 10.9.3. Before doing so, please try to boot into safe boot, by holding shift key and power on. Try your secondary mouse click to see if it work. If it is the same, then it will be driver corruption, try reinstall will help.

  • Ideapad S400 left touch pad and clicker not working

I've had this device for less than a year now, and all of a sudden the left touch pad and clicker are not properly working. If i try to click on something sometimes it doesnt work. I've tried about anything I can think of to see if it would help and so far nothing is working. Now let me mention that it doesnt happen all the time sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt.

Yes I installed the right drivers before trying to dual-boot with Linux. The issue was there from the beginning. But the issue appears only after 1 or 2 hours of use. It was mandatory for me to install Linux, for my studies. So I hope it doesn't break the warranty, because it would be unfair for people who need to do what I did.
The problem is that I am right now in Finland, but I am French and I bought my netbook when I was in France. So if I send it back to HP France, it will take weeks and weeks to get it back here, and shipping cost will be really expensive, and I will be without computer during several weeks, which is impossible for me as I need it for my studies. That is why I want to go to HP Finland and ask them. I know I could call them but the last timeI called HP France, I waited for hours and didn't get any answer on the phone.

  • Wireless trackpad: misses clicks, tracks poorly right to left

Using Yosemite, iMac 5K, wireless keyboard and magic trackpad
The trackpad sometimes misses a click and sometimes doubles the click. I know that the "click" is registered by the little buttons on the bottom of the trackpad. It is on a tidy hard surface and I know the buttons are getting moved. It feels like maybe it misses if I hold the button down longer than it wants me to. But then sometimes it just plain doesn't respond. (Yes, the battery is still good, showing 81% but this phenomenon has been happening since the pad and batteries were new.) Oh, I see more now while I'm typing. If the cursor shows as a little pointy arrow, the click doesn't register. If it shows as a double-ended vertical input cursor, it does register. This perhaps means that even though the pointer has actually moved, the computer hasn't seen it.
But then sometimes one click registers as two. For example, I try to position the mouse and end up with a word (or, worse, the name of a file in the finder) selected instead. I have changed settings in accessibility to make the double click speed slightly slower, which I think might have improved the behavior a bit. On the other hand, with the previously mentioned issue when the click doesn't seem to register. When I then do another click to make it actually see the move, that is when a double or triple click will happen. This is for moves of multiple inches with more than a split second in between.
I also find that the trackpad doesn't register movement reliably especially when I am trying to move it by pushing right to left across the pad. I can position it so that multiple light strokes on the pad don't move the cursor at all. Again, this happens when the cursor is not "expecting" typing. For example, in this support communities entry box with the arrow showing instead of the vertical input thingie.
It isn't really predictable when the problem is going to appear. As you can imagine, this makes "mouse ahead" input pretty dangerous - renaming files, deleting bodies of text with the Undo not being available anymore because of going too fast.
I already returned one of these trackpads as defective. Now I'm thinking that this is actually just the design behavior of the thing. Perhaps a pad from some other mfgr would work more reliably?
[p.s. I wish if it is going to show me the time of last autosave that it would use the local system display time, not the current time in California.]

I hope they can fix it. When my macbook came back from apple after having another issue fixed, the button was pivoting around the middle, meaning you could only click in the middle, not the edge. Too it back, they replaced the top case and it came back with the same problem. It now in again having the top case replaced again.
They're now telling me that it's "normal". It wasn't like that when I bought it!
