Left side of Mabook Pro becoming hot

When I charge my new 2010 macbook pro 15 inch it becomes noticeably hot on the left side where as the right side is fine. Is this because the charger is plugged in on the left side. Is this abnormal?

[Look at Step 15|http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook-Pro-15-Inch-Unibody-Mid-2010-Teardown /2212/2] and you will see that that is where the CPU and Nvidia GPU are. Those are the components that get the hottest in a computer.
Right now, at full load, my late 2010 MBP 15" has 90˚C i7 CPU, which is below the 105˚C max operating temperature according to [Intel|http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?spec=SLBPE].
Install [iStat Pro|http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro> (free widget) if you want to keep an eye on the temperatures inside your Mac.
If you are still worried, as many other people are, [SMC Fan Control|http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23049/smcfancontrol] will make your Mac's cooling fans run at a higher speed.

  • Bottom left side of Satellite L500 becomes hot

I've been trying to figure it out, but can't find any decent help on this.
I have a 5 year old toshiba Satellite L500 and it keeps getting very hot on the bottom left side. Now I know my harddisk is on the bottom right and that side never gets hot. So what I need to know really is what the balls is it that's getting hot on the bottom left?!
I can't find any schematics that can tell me exactly which part is which on the inside so I have no clue what is giving me issues when I'm using the internet or playing games. I have a fan under my laptop and it's on a grated surface so air can easily get to it. The problem lies in that left hand bottom side.
Also does anyone have any idea why the bottom 1-1,5 cm of my screen also gets hot? That'd be awesome! Thanks.
As a writer it is of great concern that these things happen as I need my laptop to stay alive another year or so. (Can't afford a new one and use it for literally everything I do...)

After 5 years of usage I think it is time for professional cleanup. I can imagine that cooling grill in your machine is full of dust and must be cleaned up. After doing this airflow will not be blocked and your notebook can be cooled down properly.
I also believe this will reduce the level of warmness on this part of notebook cover.

  • What's the slot on the left side of MB Pro

What is that little slot with a door -- it's smaller than a PC card ... and what is it for?
    Sorry for the dumb question.

    That is your Expresscard/34 slot.

  • The left side of my headphones became echo sound

My headphones only works on the left side. I was using the iPod Classic, suddenly the left side of my headphones becomes echo-y. When I plugged the iPod on my computer and I used my headphones on my computer, it sounds fine. I know now my headphones are fine, but is my iPod ok?
PS. I checked the equalizer and it was off.

I'm having the same issue - earphones are fine and work properly in other devices but I do not have any sound coming through the right earphone

  • Left side of keyboard won't work, right side isn't right

Whole left side of MacBook Pro not working at all and right side shows symbols but not the correct ones. Trackpad works fine and top row of keys works all the way across - light, sound, etc. did not spill anything on it. Was working just fine before.

I dont want to shut down because if I do and it doesn't fix the issue I won't be able to log back in. I am running 10.5.8

  • MacBookPro 2.8Ghz intel Core i7 running so hot on left side it burns my wrist when I type.

Hi: I have a 17" macbook pro. Left side where mag safe is has always seemed too hot to me, but I've been told that's normal. After running for upwards to 5 hours, the heat on the left side near the touch pad becomes so hot that I can not rest my wrist on the machine. I've got the screen in proper position (45 degree angle), the back of machine is not blocked. It's on a hard surface (desk or lap desk--because it is too hot to just have on my lap. The mag safe is functioning (power box) often is very hot as well and it is just on floor, not covered by anything. I don't understand what causes this problem and how to fix it.

The way something "feels" is very subjective.  We would need to know your actual temps.  You can install the free iStat Pro widget which is available as a download directly from Apple:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
Let us know what CPU temps you're seeing at the time you feel your machine is hot.  As you indicated your CPU usage was only 10%, that would imply that you already know that heavy CPU usage would be one cause for your machine to be running on the warm side... but that doesn't seem to be the cause here.

  • Why does macbook pro heats up around the left side and CD spines wildly?

I am experience heat from under the body of the computer on the left side. And also when the CD is in the drive, it runs really fast and loud. Does anyone have any reasoning for these concerns of mine? Mainly I am concerned about the over heating of the computer near the left side.

    Hi,
I set my MBP up by transferring everything from my iMac (also an Intel Core Duo model). One piece of shareware, Net Monitor, didn't like something (partly, perhaps, the fact that it detected a single license key shared by two computers on the same network) and though it told me about this (duplicate license key) and allowed me to go on using it in demo mode, it ended up soaking up CPU. I didn't notice this right away, but I had the MacBook on my lap (and was wearing shorts) and after a while, the bottom got very hot. Then I noticed the CPU was pegged. Using the Apple "Activity Monitor" I was able to see which process was the culprit and kill it.
Anyway, a single run-away process like this can use up a lot of CPU and hence a lot of battery power. Use the Activity Monitor to check for such a process. There's a nice feature in Activity monitor, a floating CPU utilization bar. I keep it showing down in the lower right corner so I can notice if something like this happens again.

  • I have a MacBook Pro and one day, my dock disappeared and so did the time, the battery percentage, and the spotlight!  The left side of my top bar is still there showing the Apple sign with the application that is open and other options. I need help!!

    Help pls!

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • I've connected my external monitor (LG) to my new Macbook Pro 15" laptop, using the adaptor for VGA...the display now has a large black bar along the left side.  No adjustment on the monitor will fix it, no "options" on System Prefs either...any ideas?

I've just purchased a new Macbook Pro, and connected it ot my external monitor (24" LG HD) using an Apple VGA adaptor.  The only resolution that looks good is the 1920 x 1080, but the image does not entirely fill the screen.  There is a large black gap on the left side of the screen now.  It worked fine with my "last generation" Macbook Pro...no adjustment on the monitor will help, and cannot find any System Setting in displays such as "options" or widescreen setting.  I've gone to the LG site, but no "Mac" related tech support issues come up...no forum here seems to deal with this particular issue either...any ideas?

I have the same thing but with a 23 inch HP, worked fine with my MBP 13 from 2009 but the 2011 2.4 i5 does the exact same thing as yours!
Very confused and hoping that some one else can help.
    Thanks

Although, l can print from my computer but i can't make copies from the touch screen.
    Bonjour,

    Hello DanTR,
I see that you are having an issue with the touchscreen on the printer.
When this issue happens it is typically a power related issue. Please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
I would also suggest that we run the HP Officejet Pro Firmware update.
Please feel free to write back if you have any other questions or concerns.
    Cheers,

Sounds like you need a #1SMC Reset
    1. SMC reset
    >>Instructions to reset SMC
Disconnect other non-Apple and external hardware except (if applicable) a mouse and keyboard until your finished repairing your machine.
Problems solved: Fans blowing with no activity, machine is not booting, power button pressed and nothing happens, problems with indicators, Magsafe has wrong lights, battery is not charging, monitor and graphics issues etc.  If the battery is not charged (from like letting it sleep too long), let the Mac charge up awhile afterwards.
Will not hurt the machine resetting if it's not broken.
    Other related hardware problems (optional):
Check battery status: Hold option/alt key down while clicking on the battery icon in the menu bar, top right corner.
Magsafe: Use the correct/matching power supply charger with your Mac, not a less powered one from another Mac.

You should take it to an Apple store or an AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) Carefully inspect the hinge joint and make sure there is no debris that you can see, you can try carefully sliding some sticky tape thru the joint to clear any loose stuff out. But this sounds like there might be more going on here, and the hinge is something that you do not want to fool with.

  • My macbook pro is probably only 2 months old and there is a buzzing/grinding noise coming from the left side of the laptop every time I open it.  It may buzz 5 times in a span of 30 seconds then not make the noise the remaining time that it is open.

Sounds like the disk in your MBP is accessing data on wake up
If you are still concerned you can take it into the Apple Store where they can hear it to be sure

  • Have a new macbook pro and on the display there are 2 lines, one blue and one green on the left side.  Does anyone know what the problem is.  Happened after 2 weeks.

I just purchased a new macbook pro.  Have had it about 2 weeks.  Last night there were 2 thin lines that are on the left side of the desktop, 1 green and 1 blue from top to bottom.  This happened after I added a printer.  Anyone know what this is.  Fearing that is a flaw in the screen.

Sounds like a hardware problem.  You'll need to contact Apple ASAP.  Since it's so new, hopefully they will just replace it rather than making you go through the repair process, but that's up to them.
