Left USB won't work with mouse or hard drive

I can only use my right-side USB port with my Mighty Mouse and external hard drive. When plugging either of these accessories into the left-side USB port, the computer does not recognize the items. What could the problem be?
Thanks for the help!

Hi, Charlie -
This Apple KBase article may have info you can use -
Article #58649 - Apple Pro Keyboard: Devices Connected
I came across that article shortly after my keyboard died, which was not long after I began having dead-mouse problems.
I made the assumption that my mouse was overloading the power-passthrough capabilities of the unpowered hub in the keyboard. I reconfigured my USB connection scheme so that the mouse was connected to the powered hub in my monitor and nothing was connected to the keyboard. That was several years ago, and no more problems.

Sorry, but this article is about 4 years old, and was printed based on preliminary information at the time.
The bottom line here is that Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme.
If it works for you, great.
You might want to review the Apple Support documents below, which are far more recent than the article you reference:

Since the last couple of OS updates the USB ports on both my iBook G4 and G5 Dual(older model) won´t recognise Canon´s Digital Photo Professional`s Capture utility. Since this is the only software that can control the aperture, shutter speed, ISO etc. from the computer - it is really important to me.Can anyone please give me advice how to get rid of the updates?

I am also running Windows 98SE as one of my operating systems. I had a heck of a time getting USB 2 to work, but here's how you do it: Put the CD Driver and Utilities Disk in your CD/DVD drive. Go to USB\USB20\Win9x-ME\Intel. That's where the inf is that you need.
You will have 2 USB entries under your Device Manager in Windows 98SE. If you have a yellow ! on your enhanced controller, point it to where I said and it will update the drivers in your system. This worked for me.
I'm attaching an Orangeware driver link that you can download and install first. Then update the driver after reboot and point it to the location above
    http://www.orangemicro.com/bin/USB2/Setup.exe
After your update you will see an Intel Ehhanced USB 2.0 Controller and a USB 2.0 Root Hub under the top entry USB set under Device Manager.

  • I was thinking about buy an 128GB SSD Macbook Pro, will it work with my external hard drive if i plugged it in through USB still?

Well basically I've heard the hype about SSD and i was thinking about buying a mac with a 128GB SSD, but i was wondering, if i plugged in my 320GB external hard drive, would it work with an SSD mac? Or, do i need and internal hard drive for it to be compatible with my external one?

You can replace your internal drive with a SSD and buy an external enclosure for your 320GB from OWC.
    No problems.

  • DVD player that will work with a portable hard drive

I have a large collecion of movie on my hard drive. I am interested in purchasing a new DVD player and am interested in being able to transfer movies from my computer to a western digital / My passbook portable USB hard drive. and play them directly from the had drive without burning them to a DVD disk. Any suggestions?

I think some DivX-certified players can play DivX content from USB storage devices and not just disc media.  Anything that works with thumb drives should work with external hard drives.
One exception:  2.5" hard drives need a LOT of power from the USB port, some players might not like this.  3.5" hard drives with an external power supply are a safe bet with anything that supports thumb drives.
A PS3 will definitely do the trick.  Many Blu-Ray players are likely to do it too.  BBY lists 41 Blu-Ray players with USB ports - but on some of those the USB port may only be for WiFi, not sure.

  • Help! X60 won't boot with new 320GB hard drive..

I'm trying to get a Seagate Momentus 7200.3 320GB SATA drive working with my 1706-M7M X60 thinkpad.
I've cloned my existing OEM Hitachi 80GB to the new drive using Acronis True Image. So far I've done this four times so I'm thinking the cloning is not the issue.
BIOS has been switched to Compatibility mode.
The odd thing is that the resuce and recovery partition works but not the bootable windows partition?
I can also see all the files on the new drive, both partitions are visible when it is plugged in via the USB enclosure. They look fine.
I've been trying to get it working for 3 days and I'm ready to throw the notebook out the window!
    Thanks in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you are willing, I would recommend that you use Easeus Disk Copy. It is a bootable CD that will clone the drive sector-to-sector.

  • Will Time Machine work with my networked hard drive?

I asked this question this question a couple years ago https://discussions.apple.com/message/9961900#9961900 and was wondering if there was an update as to whether Time Machine will work with a networked drive?
    Will it work?
Does Apple officially support this method?
I'm using Chronosync now, and it's good, but every once in a while it'll hickup.
    Thanks so much

Nothing has changed, other than the fact that we are seeing a lot more posts from users having probems who have tried this unsupported method of backups.
Apple is prety clear on this in their support documentation. They say that you cannot do this.
Results vary with users who try this anyway. Some have difficulties immediately with corruption issues, others have successful backups for a few weeks to even a few months before they have difficuties. Count me as  one who thought they had somehow beat the system, but after 4 weeks, things collapsed.
Forum expert Pondini has an appropriate saying about this issue, which I am sure I am not quoting exactly:
There are two types of users who attempt Time Machine backups to a drive attached to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme....those who have problems, and those who will have problems.

  • Work with an external hard drive

Hi everyone. I use iMovie 6.0.3 a lot and I need to save the imported clips, but they are using up a ton of my disc space. Is it easy to save clips to an external drive, and then get iMovie to see them there and use them? I have a firewire external drive that is formatted to Mac OSX extended.
Also, if I use a Firewire hub, can I plug my camera and drive in at the same time and have the import save right to the external drive, or do I have to import to my computer, then copy them to the external drive?
    Thanks in advance,
    Kevin

    BatmanFD wrote:
.. Does the new version of iMovie (7.0) work with external hard drives in the same way? ..
    mainly
iM08 has a very different concept - iMHD6 stored all data (camera imports, stills, music, ...) in one solid 'package' file. iM08 now has a Library (similiar as iPhoto), which contains all imports (ever), called 'Events', and small Projects, which can be made of any Events (e.g. you can use an import again and again in as many Projects you want.. )
So, you can easiely locate all or just some Events (=huge files) on ext. HDDs. Locating Projects (=small files) to external drives is possible, but not recommended (HowTo on my site, karsten.schluter.googlepages.com ).
A considerable workflow is, to buy some harddrives, and make a file management 'manually': store imports/Events by content (vacations, year 2008-10, birds, aliens...), each on a different drive - over the years you build a 'Library' of all your Recordings, and have easy access (plug 'n play).
iM08 supports the cheaper usb2 drives.
My workflow with iMHD6 is to erase any project after finishing; my 'raws' are on tape, my projects too + DVDs. With tapeless-camcorders you HAVE to store your recordings on some additional 'memory' = harddrives.
for a beginning, you can use for sure the internal one, because you're allowed to de-locate any Event later to other drive(s) within iM08 (don't use the Finder to move Events!).
    happy movie making!

  • Working with Captivate in Hard Drive Enclosure

Got a new computer and put the hard drive from my
old computer in a Hard Drive Enclosure. To get Captivate to work I
had to re-enter my key ... can open demo Captivate sample cp but
when I try to open Captivate files that I created the file starts
to load in Captivate and then Captivate closes. Using version 1.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks,
    Sid

    Hi:
    Thanks for the quick response.
See link to Hard Drive Enclosure .... I took the hard drive
out of my old computer and put it in the enclosure .... then you
hook up the enclosure to your new computer via a USB connection ...
I can run any applicaitons on the old hard drive by ... simply go
to my computer and look for dive f: to access.

  • Hp model ac6827c wont work with 1 tb hard drive

Hi all, bought a brand new seagate barracuda  1000GB for my A6827c to replace the 500 that was full and i was planning to install win7. Any how, put the drive in it gets to end of win install and i get a cant finish due to a hardware issue. the only thing i did was hard drive. Re booted 6 or 7 times but it would not finish. Decided to install my Vista and got to almost the end , same problem. tried partitioning  two 500 gig. that didnt work. Firmware issue??. was on HP searching but found nothing on new Barracuda. Anyone have any ideas.???

hey, doing further research my barracuda is ST 1000 DM003-1ch162. not on list for firmare upgrade. Just for trial i went to a friens house and tried to install said drive in his older desktop with an slightly older Intel board. Installed Win 7 no problems. now i know the drive is not faulty. In the HP both win7 and vista stop cold when install goes all the way thru and screen shows starting services. Boom ,install stops.I ran Memtest this afternoon, found nothing. installed win7 on a used WD 500 gig with no problems. for the life of me this is a stumper. Its an all on board unit so i even installed a video card and shut of on board vid to see. No change. Could it be a raid driver that needs to be loaded once win is installed but cant be installed because win is not installed??
    Thanks

  • Transport controls won't work with mouse....

    Hi
Having been a long term Mac user with Avid and FCP I have now decided to move to Premiere on a PC.
I've just installed the Creative Cloud version and it all looks good. However, the mouse will not activate any of the device controls. (play, mark in, mark out etc.) I can make video play with the space bar, mark in and out with keyboard etc. any ideas?
    Thanks.

Well, feel privileged! I've not heard of this problem before.
Now, occasional glitches with Wacom tablets, that comes up from time to time. Hope one of the techie types can give you some assistance. This would be rather an annoying limitation ...

  • Cross Platform issues working with an external hard drive

Lightroom 4.0 on both machines -- Ok, I use MAC at school and Windows 7 at home.  I put all my files on an external hard drive named ALR which is mapped on my PC to drive L.  When I edit any photo at school and go back to the PC machine at home,  I get the cannot locate original picture in location //volumes//ALR// if I'm on the MAC after editing photo's at home on the PC, I get the message cannot locate L:\ALR .. etc.  It keeps looking for the drive designation from the other computer.  Weird to me is that all the files are located on my external hard drive and I do not move them from there, also my catalog is located on the external drive also (no lectures on this please, I back up and its for a lightroom class)  The professor has no idea why that is happening as he knows NOTHING about pc's..  Anyone else have an idea - in the big scope of things it is not a big deal, but it is just frustrating to have to remap my directory every time.

Can we see a screenshot of the Folders panel please, before you remap it?  I just need to be clear on whether you're having to 'find missing folder' on a single folder (which is quite normal as Mac and Windows see the drive completely differently) or whether there's a different issue here.

  • Does time machine work with ANY portable hard drive or backup drive?

I am just wondering. Please help.

Time Machine Compatible External Hard Drive
What drives are time machine compatible?

  • Intermittently using Time Machine with an External Hard Drive

Ok, Kappy answered some questions I had about how Time Machine works with an external hard drive.
After doing more reading about Time Machine, I found out that a person can, for example, leave the drive powered-off for a couple of weeks and only periodically or intermittently use Time Machine for back up. However, in the online article I read dated 2009, the author suggested that he didn't know how well Time Machine would work making up for the two weeks, or however long, no files had been backed up.
Specific questions: I have 10.6.3 SL (I have not yet been brave enough to download 10.6.4) and a 4 month old iMac. 1) Have any of you had experience with only periodically using Time Machine for back up and 2) with my current system would you think I might run into some trouble if I only intermittently backed-up using Time Machine?
Thanks for reading this and thanks if you feel my questions warrant answering.
Note: I do have another external hard drive where I occasionally manually back-up photos, gifs, music, etc.

If you go several days between backups, Time Machine may have to do a "deep traversal," comparing every folder on your system to the backups, to determine what's changed and needs to be backed-up. This depends on the volume of changes, so can happen after an OSX update, but in other circumstances might be after several days. This isn't a big problem, but it does take longer, and the more data you have, the longer it takes.
Worse, after an extended period, Time Machine may do a new, full backup of your entire system, rapidly filling-up your TM drive.
If that's the way you want to back up, Time Machine is not the backup app for you. One of it's main features is the way it can do quick hourly backups of what's changed, so you have an excellent chance of recovering a previous version (or versions) when you change or delete something in error, or a file comes up corrupted, or your Mac fails.
Why don't you want to just leave the drive connected and Time Machine running, to protect you best, as it was designed to do?
For alternatives designed to do less frequent backups, see Kappy's post on Basic Backup.
