Hardly. Every single Mac sold comes with a complete set of disks with whatever is the latest version of the Mac OS at the time, along with gobs of useful software rather than the plethora of trial software and shovelware that comes with PCs. On top of that, many PC manufacturers don't even include a copy of the Windows software loaded on your computer! Your "backup" is on a hidden partition of the hard drive. Oh yeah, that's a really great place for the bundled software you paid for if the hard drive dies.
Purchasing a newer retail copy of OS X is no different than having to buy Vista if you want to move up from the XP version that your PC came with. When you sell the PC, your only obligation is to include all of the software that came with it. You are in no way obligated to include Vista, which you paid extra for after the fact. OS X is no different. That retail disk is yours separately of the Mac you were using it on. You can keep it to use on a different Mac, or sell it alone.

I looked at your post this morning and did not know enough to respond, other than to find out that links to iListen now go to newer, renamed software. Considering it's been nine hours with no response, I'm suspecting few people here have experience with that software. You could contact the current copmany that used to sell that package and see if they have any archived support info.
BTW: please check you entry for "Mac OS" in your profile. It says iOS, which cannot run on an iMac. iOS is the system for phone and iPads but can't run on Mac computers. Do "About this Mac" from the Apple menu and see what it says about the OS version. Should look like this:

I need a Legal copy of Acrobat X. Acrobat XI (11) does not function with my Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) Scanner. HP claims that the Scanner is 100% functional and tested with Acrobat XI. About your only choice would be an Adobe vendor who still has a copy on their shelves. The possibility of finding such a vendor is not too good.

Did you buy your machine second-hand? That's really the only way you would have to purchase OS X 10.8.x from the App Store... but, yes, if you have a USB thumb drive with a bootable installer (such as made with Lion DiskMaker) you can boot from that and reinstall OS X.

I have a 15in lampshade iMac desktop. It bricked itself and won't go past the gray screen. Long story short, I need a copy of OSX 10.4. I just want to reinstall the entire OS. How do I either buy it from Apple, since everyone tells me its obsolete (obviously?) and they don't support it - the Geniouses tell me to order it online and I cannot find any place to do that. Help? (And please don't tell me to upgrade... I already have several other computers. I just want this thing as more than a fancy paperweight on a desk).

When the person from Apple answered - I had to give him the serial number from the PC- to which he replied it was out of warranty.. but what was it I was calling for? I explained I had the system- but no disc to load the OS and I read on the web Apple would send me a copy. He asked what version I wanted- and I *THOUGHT* I needed 10.4 Tiger. So he repeated, "I understand you to be asking you want to purchase a copy of OSX 10.4 Tiger correct?' I confirmed and so he looked it up and said he could send me the copy above for $16 and ~$1 shipping.
Then I asked what would it take to get Leopard.. he just repeated, 'You would like to purchase a copy of OSX 10.5 Leopard, Correct?" (Something like that anyway) - and I confirmed- he looked it up and said he could send me that as well for $16 and ~$1 shipping. Whole thing took about 20 minutes on the phone with them.
Hopefully you are able to get ahold of someone as helpful as the person I reached... wish I knew what else to tell ya. I should have written down my support person's name... he would be getting a lot of calls I'm sure.

That offer was for a CD-ROM. However, it's highly likely that that is not a legal copy. You would not be able to download a copy of CS2 from Adobe.

Last year, When I decided to upgrade my Lombard to Tiger, I looked around and found the Tiger CD's on Apple Rescue for a great price. When I wanted to get a second copy for my Wallstreet, Apple Rescue was no longer to be found. My question is: Do I have a legal copy, or was my hard earned cash spent in vain? In other words, should I get another copy of Tiger for the Lombard?

After additional research on Apple Rescue, I find that they were selling unauthorized copies of the Apple software. So I guess this means I must purchase a legal copy. Thanks, Kappy even though the news is not good. I researched Apple Rescue, and the owners were indicted in Massachusetts for selling illegal copies of apple software.

Like so many people, my son uses Adobe only occasionally but he wants to grow his skills. Adobe (with whom I just spent over an hour on the phone) tells me that my 9th grade son is not eligible for the Student version because he intends to sell business card designs with the work product from Adobe. Sooo....I need to find a legal copy of CS 5.5. We thought we had one, long story, but we were scammed.

No way. At this point you can only buy current versions, menaing CS6 or sign up for Creative Cloud. Anything else will bring you back to finding a legit used copy with al lthe risks liek being screwed again...

I have managed to get it up to OS 10.2.8 with automatic updates, but I would like to install OSX 10.4 Tiger (The most advanced compatible os for this ibook), But I have not managed to find anywhere on www.apple.com where i can purchase a copy?
Is there anywhere I can buy the original installation dvd, or download a version?

Also, Tiger usually came on a DVD. Some 800 MHz iBooks have just a CD-ROM drive, so you need to keep that in mind and determine whether you can use the DVD version.

I have a legal coopy of Elements 9. I installed it on an older computer which crashed. A new hard drive was installed and I re-intalled Elements. Shortly afterward, the motherboard and processor had to be replaced and a new hard drive was also installed. Then I bought a new computer. So I now have NO installed copies of Elements. But when I tried to install it on my new computer, it tells me to deactivate my older installations. Impossible, of course. But I can I convince Adobe that I am not running any additional copies?

You have to contact Adobe directly via a chat session or phone call for activation issues. They deal with this situation all the time, and will just deactivate your other copies.
PSE can be installed on up to two computers and so it is likely the third activation that is being prevented. When you talk to Adobe they may ask you a few pointed questions to determine if you are using a pirated copy—where many people would be trying to use the same serial number, so be ready for that.
You can also assume that Adobe has IP-address (and location) information for each attempted activation and if they see a large geographic distribution of attempts they may assume the serial number has been compromised. If you have purchased your PSE11 from a legitimate reseller then you probably have nothing to worry about, but if you got it off Amazon Marketplace (not Amazon, themselves) then it may have been an unahtorized copy that Adobe eventually figured out about, and they have blacklisted the serial number.
Hopefully you just installed it a couple times, already, and that is the only problem and Adobe deactivate those other installs.

How to obtain copy of OSX 10.3 Panther for install on Imac DV400

I have added 1 gig of RAM.This IMAC is running OS9. I was told to buy Panther OS 10.3 Panther as it is the best operating software for this older machine.
I was going to go to apple store education and buy it but all there appears to be for sale is Tiger? I thought Apple required upgrades to be per machine, a new copy of Panther for each machine. I have a full copy of Panther for my Desktop G5. This is for a student 1st grader. I need advice. Where can I buy this? I was at EBAy many times and was scarred off because I do not know much about macs and cannot tell if a seller is advertising something which is stolen, previously used and not for real. Please advise.

If I want to set up my Imac with all the software on OS9 for the first grader to play games efficiently would you recommend partitioning hard drive into one for OS9 and most for OS 10.3. I can then put on my Office apps, photoshop ect.
Is there any way to connect another monitor to imacs for video conferencing or better resolution. I have never seen an imac function with OSX so can only relate to the simple games in 256 colors I see when we use it to play games. Want to switch hard drives but dont have my copy of OSX with me. what 2 do?

i just got my seagate 500 7200 in today, and im abotu to do the install, but i jsut thought about it, i need osx disc to put on to the new drive correct? and if i do, im screwed im on a tour and no where near my home where lies my osx disk. is there any possible way to get my hard drive in without a leopard disk?
ALSO im doing a time machine back up right now, what exaclty does it back up, and how do i load my time machine back back up files back into my new hardrive?
