Legalities of using iDVD for commercial productions

Hi all,
How do I stand legally using iDVD to produce home movie DVDs commercially. I've search for answers to this with no clear reckoning.
All input is most welcome.
Thanks in advance.
SR

iDVD is not suitable for any commercial DVD titles (ie: replicated discs) . You need to use DVDSP or have someone do it for you. Factors like bitrate, for example, can really screw up a title - BEWARE- you might be OK, you might not.
Remember, just because a disc works in your set top doesn't mean it will in others and there are millions of players in the world. Authoring a title using professional tools is needed to make sure certains aspects of a title adheres to the DVD spec.

    Hi,
Yes you can, but you should be aware of the limitations of MS SQL Express version.
    1. 1GB RAM
    2. 10 GB database size per database excluding log file (SQL 2008 R2 and above)
3.Job Scheduling service is not available with SQL Server Express.
4.Data import and export feature is not available with SQL Server Express.
    5.Limitation on number of CPU
Refer following article for features supported by different editions of MS SQL Server.

  • Can I use the music "Run down bounty" in adobe elements 11 for commercial production (short film)?

    Hi,
in the sound bar are some songs eg. run down bounty. Can I use them for commercial - short film?
    thx

Are those part of the SmartSound Sonic Fire Library?
If so, you will want to go to the SmartSound Web site: http://www.smartsound.com/ as they have all of the licensing info for their music. You should be fine, but I would check, just to be sure.
    Good luck,

  • Music on Sound Track Pro? Can we use this for commercial use?

Does anybody know what the license agreement for the music that comes on the Soundtrack Pro software? It says it's royalty free, but can I use this for commercial use?

Short answer is yes.  Long answer is read the license agreement and call your lawyer with any questions.
A couple of years ago I noticed that there were some loops belonging to APM, and raised the issue with them.  It's licensed to Apple and through Apple to you as an owner of the software.  You can NOT repackage and sell the loops though, only use them in your productions.

You obviously think it such a good deal, it must be too good to be true.

  • Using IDVD for music promo

    Hi guys,
Would really appreciate some advice on this:
Using IDVD I have produced a kind of interactive demo for the purpose of showcasing examples of my music productions. This project only uses audio files and images (no video). I realise that idvd is really for 'moving' media like video, but I really liked the graphical interface and want to produce something classier than just an A4 biog.
It all looks great, but when it comes to saving the project as a disk image it says "There were errors during the project validation. These errors have to be fixed before burning the project.". I think this is because there is no video in my submenus, just audio and background images (an exclamation mark appears on each of the submenus' frames).
Is it possible to use IDVD in the way I want or am I barking up the wrong tree?
If I am, what can I use to make a similar promo resource for my music?
    Thanks in advance guys!
    Ben, Brazil

    Hello Ben,
I may be mistaking what you want to do, but if you have no video files linked to any of the menus, iDVD may be confused. To remedy this, you could either create a very short and quiet movie in iMovie (eg, your name on a single slide) and then link it to each submenu. Depending on the theme you're using, you may be able to "hide" the button by editing the button text to a period or a couple spaces. The other option is to create an alternate combination of your music and still images in iMovie and link it in a visible way to the menus.
If you are adventureous, the combination of Quicktime Pro, Photoshop/Elements, MakeEffectMovie, and iMovie can give you many of the same types of effects as the iDVD themes. Although the book is a bit dated now, many interesting ideas using that software are contained in "iMovie 3 Solutions" by Erica Sadun.

  • Using iDVD for "for-profit" projects

I'd like to use iDVD to make some videos that will be sold as part of a training program.
Do I need some sort of commercial license if I'm going to use the menu themes (and accompanying music), jingles from GarageBand, etc.? Or are all of these truly royalty free for whatever use -- commercial or private -- we have planned?
    Thanks.

I finally received an email yesterday from the Manager of Licensing at MPEG LA in Chevy Chase, MD; in it he asked me to call him to "discuss these matters briefly on the telephone". I just called him and he stated that as long as these homemade DVD's only contain "made by consumer" material (such as video/stills shot by consumer with his or a friend's camera) and using software which already has a license on it, I would not have to get a license or be required to pay approx. $0.03 per copy. However, if it contains commercial material and is intended for commercial use, a license and fees would be required. He also stated that they are not interested in pursuing fee collection with hundreds of thousands of consumers for the fee of one or two copies each because their administrative costs would be higher than the fees collected.
This, at last, answers my question related to iDVD/iMovie (mpeg) and hopefully answers yours; I don't know about GarageBand (I don't use it). I have read the SLA covering Sound Track (part of FCE) and it is allowed IF you make your own composition.

  • First time using iDVD for slideshow, need some guidance

I want to make a dvd that consists of 3-6 slideshows, plus "extras". Each slideshow will have 50-150 photos, but the "extras" section I want to have all the photos (including some not used in the slideshows) for a total of about 1300 photos.
    1. How do I get the photos not used in the slideshow in the "extras" section?
    2. Can I put anything in the "drop zones"? or does everything just go in the "slideshow" section?
This is the first time I have ever used iDVD and could use any help or suggestions at all.....
    thanks

Don't use over 99 images in a slideshow. You may have trouble:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302961
    1. Just create a new extras slideshow menu from the main menu by using the + button and select Add Submenu. Then go there and add slideshows the same way, only select Add Slideshow and then drag your images in; or use the Import funtion.
    2. Drop Zones are for single images/movies.
I think you need to spend some time learning how to do this, rather than guessing.

  • Can I purchase Adobe photoshop cc INDIVIDUAL subscription and use it for commercial purpose? Or is it meant for non-commercial usage only?

If I run a small studio with only 3 people, and purchase photoshop CC with individual subscription, can I use it for my studio? Why I ask this is because CC individual license (single app) is cheaper than a subscription for small/medium sized businesses (single app).
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi rohit.c
Yes, that's fine - there is no restriction on using an individual subscription commercially.
The small business teams plans are more expensive as you get additional storage and tools to manage license deployment.
    Kind regards
    Bev

  • I want to know if it is legal and acceptable for me to buy the Individual version of Adobe Illustrator and use it for commercial purposes

Good day, I'm looking to buy the latest Adobe Illustrator. I am an individual / freelancer and I work from a home office. I am based in South Africa. I want to know if it is legal and acceptable for me to buy the Individual version of Adobe Illustrator and sell the illustrations / vectors etc I produce on sites such as RedBubble etc. In other words to use the Individual version as a freelancer for commercial purposes.
Also why the price difference between the Annual Plan, paid monthly and the Monthly Plan?
And once I have paid for a year, with whichever plan, is there a continued annual subscription due or am I done paying after a year?

    wendy
It is perfectly fine to sell what you create with all versions of Illustrator, even the educational one.
The price difference is because if you commit for a full year you get a better price - kind of like a volume discount.
If you subscribe, you will have to continue paying each month if you want to continue to use the software. It's a subscription, so you'll need to pay for as long as you want to keep using the software.

  • Can I use cs2 for commercial purposes?

    Hello!
I've digged whole internet to find official answers, but I couldnt find it. So I want to ask it here, before bad things happened.
I downloaded CS2 from this website and recieved official keys for installation.
So the question is: can I use this  CS2 for commercial purposes now? Will I have any problems with the law in case of law audit?
Can I recieve clear and understandable official answer for russian audience? Then I will share ADOBE's answer.
    Thank you!

Unless you purchased CS2 you have no legal right to download and use CS2.
Those downloads and serial numbers are supplied for those with legitimate
licenses because of the shutdown of the activation servers.

  • ITunes U for Commercial Product Training?

I'm interested in talking with an Apple representative in the Seattle WA area to see how my company can use iTunes U for our product training.   We are not an educational institution, but do train thousands of people per year for how to deploy and use our products which are quite technical in nature.   Would anyone know how I can have this discussion with someone at Apple?   Thank you.

The iTunes U Service has the following elegibility requirements.
iTunes U is a free service available to qualifying K-12 school districts, two- and four-year accredited, degree-granting, public or private colleges and universities in the United States, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and United Kingdom. Universities and Colleges must enter into an iTunes U Service Agreement before being eligible to use the iTunes U service. Apple reserves the right to determine eligibility.

  • CS4 Student Edition - Can my daughter use this for commercial use after she has finished her studies?

I have searched all day, having phoned 6 different numbers and researched everywhere to not get a definate answer to this question. We are in the UK, I do not want to spend money on software which she cannot legally use after her studies to produce work which she can sell commercially. Some forum answers are relevant for North America only or are a little out of date refering to Education Licenses. Please help!! One person said they embed a watermark to prevent commercial use but is this an education copy or a student edition?

Within limits, yes, but as you stated you are in the UK, I don't think it is "allowed". Refer to this link: http://www.adobe.com/education/students/studentedition/faq.html
I'll copy the text for sake of ease.
Do the Student Editions have restricted functionality?
Adobe Student Editions give the end user all the features and functionality of the commercial versions. The software may be used only on a privately owned computer, and the end user may not transfer or resell ownership of the Adobe Student Edition license.
Is there a time limit on using the Student Editions?
No, there is no time limit on using the Student Editions.
Can a Student Edition also be used for commercial purposes?
In North America, Student Edition software can be used for commercial purposes. Outside North America, Student Edition software is for noncommercial purposes only.
How many versions of a Student Edition can I purchase?
Each eligible person may purchase only one copy per Adobe Student Edition. For example, a student may purchase only one copy of Creative Suite 4 Design Premium Student Edition. If that student buys an additional copy of Design Premium Student Edition, no serial number will be issued for it.
How many computers can I use a Student Edition on?
A Student Edition license can be installed on up to two computers (for example, a desktop and laptop). Activation ensures that no more than two computers can have the same serial number.
Can I upgrade from a Student Edition?
Yes, a  Student Edition can be upgraded to a commercial version.
Can I resell a Student Edition?
The end user may not transfer or resell ownership of the Adobe Student Edition license.
Can I use a Student Edition after I graduate?
Yes, after you graduate, you may continue to use your Student Edition; the license does not expire.
Can I use a Student Edition  on a computer at school?
No, you may use your  Student Edition only on your own private computer.

  • IDVD for commercial use?

Just wondering if it's legal to sell dvd's created in iDVD and using one of the Apple provided themes?
The other content of the DVD would be copyrighted material owned by me...just wondering how Apple feels about their consumer product being used to make a commercially distributed product.
    Kurt in OK

Check the license agreement - in the past, when I checked such use (completed DVD only) was allowed.
