I have permission from my carrier (ATT) to unlock my iPhone 3GS, but my serial numbers are above 135. I have proof that it was legal, and it will be to use the iPhone outside of the US. However, I looked up how to do it and my serial numbers are above 135. Can I still do it?

If you went through ATT to get it unlocked, and, if they sent you an e-mail confirming it was ready to be unlocked, then all you need to do is restore it through iTunes on your computer and you should get a confirmation message when that is completed that your phone is unlocked.

Note - I have contacted customer service, customer sales, online Apple.com chat and my local store with no answer. If I go to France before the new phone comes out, which may happen, the older phone they have in stock there is 700 Euro which is more than one thousand dollars, so I would like to know beforehand if it will be functional.

In regards to 1 and 2, I do not know.
In regards to 3, I personally believe so. However, I have not specifically been trained on the iPhone outside of the U.S.
The best bet for questions 1-3 is to contact AppleCare Europe or Orange.

Today i updated my iphone to 3.0 for the new feautures. Mind you, its legally unlocked so i figured no problems. I have tmobile and was using t-zones with no problems before the update. Now i can't use the internet for some reason! ***. I really need away to get back online or else i'll just cancel my t-zones! thanks

yes i have a legally unlocked 3G iphone i bought from a guy on ebay - i live in Australia. Had no probs with a new local sim card when i went to the UK either. The reason you cant access the internet ( i suspect) is that you havent got the correct settings .
Go to Settings->General->Network->Cellular Data Network and enter the appropriate APN's and passwords. My carrier has different settings depending on which data plan i'm on. So if in doubt go to your carriers web support or dealer who should be able to get you going if you cannot . Cheers

As has been stated, you cannot purchase an unlocked iPhone in the US. This kbase article indicates whether iPhones sold in particular countries are carrier-locked (in some cases, you can contact the carrier for unlocking).

Legally Unlocked 3G - how can I use when vacationing in USA?

I have a 3G iPhone, legally unlocked by Optus (standard in Australia). I'm going to be visiting the US for a vacation shortly, and want to use my phone for both US phone calls as well as data.
Obviously I don't want/need some kind of permanent subscription.
Any suggestions for a good strategy would be appreciated.

An iPhone unlocked by Optus in Australia will accept a SIM from non-Australian networks.
I was in the USA recently. You can purchase a cheap Motorola AT&T Go Phone in places like Walmart for $14.95. I did this in Hawaii. You then call them via a 1-800 number on another phone or via the website to activate it. You will need to provide US address details, including Zip code. You can then use the SIM from the Go Phone in your iPhone. The $14.95 does not include any call credit. You have to purchase that by the standard means. Check out http://www.att.com/gophone .
When unlocking a phone you should ensure it is unlocked before you leave the country. It is a lot harder to rectify once outside the country.
There are two main GSM-based networks in the USA: AT&T and T-Mobile. With an Optus SIM you can roam onto either. With an unlocked iPhone you can even use a T-Mobile SIM. I believe you won't get any 3G service on the T-Mobile network as it uses a different band than those supported by the iPhone, although someone may correct me on this.

I recently traveled to livigno (in the alps of Italy)and i stumbled across an unlocked iPhone 3G at an electronics store (not an apple store just a regular electronics store).
the guy told me that it was legally unlocked and that i could make software updates. but after what I've been hearing in the apple discussion , i am not sure if i should take the risk and upgrade to 2.2.1 from 2.2
how can i know that it is legally unlocked and that i can update without the phone being locked ()bricked.
I live in Malta and using it in Malta.

Legally unlock imei

Hello everybody,
i would like to ask you if apple can legally unlock somehow the sim-lock with phone operators. I sign a contract with an operator in Sweden couple of months ago for an iphone 4s(ios 6.0) with a swedish number. It works fine with the swedish number i got, but now that i come back in italy i have to use another italian operator,and when i put the italian sim card it tell me that i have to verify it and it tell me is locked with the swedish company! how can i do now ?

Sorry, Apple does not unlock iPhones. Only the cellular provider can do that. You will need to contact them to determine their unlocking policy.

If the unlock was authorised by orange and then done through iTunes then yes it can be used with any compatible carrier. And future OS updates will never relock it.

Thing is i dont know if he was authorised. And on the box, there was no name of a service provider on the picture of the iphone, usually there is at&t or something, thats why i think its legally unlocked, and the fact that when i plugged it into the computer. Itunes told me to activate it but not full activating with plans, just my itunes account and where i live

Question about Legally Unlocked iPhones & Update 'locking'?

Please forgive me if this has been covered before, as I am a totally newbie in this area.
I have a question regarding legally unlocked iphones:
If I bought an iphone from a country that offered legally unlocked cellphones like Singapore for example, and then used it/patched it up for the first time AFTER bringing it back into the US, would this 'lock' the cellphone to only work in the US, or with ATT?
The reason I ask is due to two points: A) I know that certain countries offer cellphones that were never locked to begin with. B) I have read that after installing the latest patch (2.2.1 I think) in the US, iphones that were previously locked and then unlocked, will be re-locked.
So my question is basically this: What would happen in the event that you update a phone that was never locked to begin with? Would it 'lock' for the first time? Or would it remain unlocked still?

Legally unlocked iPhones have to be updated in the country where they were purchased to guarantee they are not relocked...Every country has their own iTunes -- When you connect to iTunes in the US you are connecting with a US ISP address on your computer. You would have a completely different ISP code in a different country.
Wait to update and see what others are finding before you attempt to update in the US. It is completely within Apple's right to relock phones used within the USA.
This is not the right forum site to get updates on this. A google search will bring up non-Apple websites where you will get up to date information about this.

Legally unlocked phone using in US with data on PAYG

I have an unlocked UK iPhone, which O2 legally unlocked for me. I am now moving back to the US and don't want to get into a two-year contract with AT&T until I can see that their coverage is worthy.
Does anyone know a US carrier who will provide both voice, text and DATA support to an iPhone on pay as you go?
During Christmas, I was in the US and got a PAYG sim from AT&T, but despite paying $20 for a data package, AT&T no longer supports data on PAYG plans. Therefore, my lovely iPhone was rendered virtually useless, except for voice and text.

No, they do not. Only the original provider can unlock the phone. You can't go to the UK and ask O2 to unlock a US phone for you. The rep gave you misinformation or said what you want to hear.
#3 Buy an new unlocked phone from Apple. Apparently Apple is able to sell unlock IPhones in special circumstances in the USA, unlocked. Since he gave me this option, I assume moving to another country is warranted as a special circumstance. However, I would need to pay the full unsubsidized price for the phone and I can only buy the phone at a retail location, not online and not through AT&T.
Apple does not sell "special" unlocked phones in the US. This would violate the exclusive deal they have with ATT.

IPhone 3G S - Way to legally unlock?

I have an iPhone 3G S (how surprising). Anyway... my employer just mentioned a couple of days ago that he wants to send me to Germany for some time. Since the iPhone is Quad Band it shouldn't be an issue using it overseas. However there is the problem with the AT&T SIM Lock... and there is no AT&T in Germany. Is there a legal way to contact AT&T / Apple to ask them to unlock the iPhone? At least Apple should technically be able to perform an unlock. Because I have to switch to a German carrier like T-Mobile Germany (which exclusively sells the iPhone). I guess I could jailbreak it (as far as I know the Dev Team is working on a SIM Lock for iPhone OS 3.1) but I rather wouldn't if there is a legal way to perform an unlock.
Any suggestion is welcome.

"Logic" is a funny thing when there is an exclusive carrier contract with the manufacturer. Treos, and BBs don't have carrier exclusive deals. AT&T isn't unlocking any iPhones, regardless of whether the user contract has expired. Don't bet on this happening unless the FCC rules change to require it, or AT&T loses the exclusive iPhone deal.

Can't view Cellular Data network on legally unlocked iPhone 3GS

I bought an iphone from Singapore and those phones come as unlock. Now that I am in the States, I was hoping to use my corporate AT&T sim card for data surfing and all. While I am able to make calls, it says that I am not registered for cellular data network. I was able to surf the web using the same SIM on this other HTC phone.
I was hoping to change the APN settings but that appears to be missing. How can I change the settings to that of AT&T?

Do you know the data plan rate your employer is paying for your HTC phone or for whatever phone the data plan is for?
AT&T's enterprise data plan for the iPhone costs $45/mo.
Sounds like you or your employer will need to contact AT&T customer support.
