Legato, O8 on Linux Support

Greetings,
So while we wait for O8i, which may be having JAVA hang ups based
on what I have seen in O8i on NT and Solaris, let me ask this
question - What do you do for backups?
Obviously Oracle and Legato are the party line, but does Legato
run on Linux? Are there other options?
I am getting ready to go to production and we DON'T want the
headaches of NT or the cost of Solaris so Linux is the answer,
and while I can shut down the DB to back it up, I would rather
avoid that if possible.
Thanks,
DAVID

I am sure you don't want to hear this, but as a unix hack and
database administrator, I put together a script which uses "dd"
to hot backup the database nightly to tape. It works pretty
well. If anything fails, it sends me e-mail. Not quite the
graphical solution that Legatto might offer, but the price and
piece of mind is right. The only issues I've had with the
backups is that my Linux (Rethat 5.2) has problems writing to my
tape drive every now and then (I get e-mailed of course). Not
sure about Legatto on Linux. We use it on Solaris and it, along
with any other media managment tool, has it's problems.

So where is the LINUX support in the new Solaris 10?
I downloaded the free Software Express for Solaris x86 Platform (11/04) and installed it on a Dell 8600 P4 1.8 system. Fresh install on a new hard drive. Then I tried to install the new FireFox web browser for Linux. Received the following error: Cannot find /lib/ld-linux.so.2. I was logged in as Root. Ran a search of the entire system and found nothing using pattern ld-linux*.

So where is the LINUX support in the new Solaris 10?It does not exist (at least not outside of Sun).
There are rumours that it will be available in one of the Solaris
10 update releases. In case S10 FCS will be available in
january/february 2005, and the rumour are true, I'd expect that
the linux support will be available somewhere in june 2005 (??
    S10 Update 1) or october 2005 (?? S10 Update 2). (Pure
speculation be me, I don't know the schedule)

Lack of Mac & Linux Support Hurting Javafx 2.0 Early Adoption and traction.
Oracle needs to come out with a Mac & Linux Beta built, or let developers know the real story behind Mac OS and Javafx 2.0.

I too would like to at least be able to try the Mac/Linux ports, even knowing that they are behind the Windows version. But just knowing that Oracle is committed to them is enough to ease any nervous feeling that I'm choosing the wrong tech.
I have no problems with the fact that Oracle is concentrating on Windows first. It makes sense. If you have to pick one platform to focus on while you are getting the kinks out, it makes sense for it to be the most popular platform. That's Windows. But there mustn't be too long of a wait for the others. (E.g. if they were in a public beta stage when the Windows version is at final release, that would help boost confidence in the platform.)
So long as they don't make the same mistakes that were made with Swing, where there are too many assumptions that all platforms work the same - so things like Mac's screen menu bar had to be fit in after the fact by Apple using awkward hacks. (I notice that now even popular Linux distros (Ubuntu) are using the screen menu bar concept, though they have managed to fit that into the window manager in such a way that it didn't seem to cause much problems.)

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view), this is a user to user forum and no one here knows what Apple's plans for the future might be. Apple discourages us from speculating about such matters.
If I were to speculate about why they don't want us speculating, it's probably because, among other things, it would just end up encouraging a lot of semi-informed opinions (i.e. speculation).
But again, I'm just speculating so please don't quote me on that.

  • EVE Online Linux Support is here.

The announcement can be found in this forum topic.
Cheers for a company that gives Linux support where other try to ignore player base (my humble opinion anyway).
Time to learn how to write PKGBUILDs .

When I start it, it is still 10x24 fullscreen, but other settings have been saved.
As long as I stay inside a station, everything is fine and dandy, as soon as I undock the client crashes and when I try to login again and eve starts to load my toon (now outside a station somewhere) the client crashes again.
    I also get the error:
    sh: lsb_release: command not found
This can be solved by installing lsb_release, but the package isn't in pacman or AUR. I've been browsing the web to find a source tarball to make a PKGBUILD for it, but no luck so far.
You can run eve -config to get the cedega config options for eve, there you can set windowed mode.
Remember to turn off dx_grab there aswell if you're running windowed.
I get the lsb_release warning aswell but it does not affect running the client as far as I can tell.

Been a long time since I played Freelancer and I've never tried Vendetta. But Eve is third person and more tactical when it comes to fighting. It's very hard to summarize eve but it's really massive and the learning curve is steep but once you get into it, set some goals for yourself and find a good bunch of people to team up with I'd say it's the most rewarding mmo out there.

  • Oracle on LINUX Support question

    Hello Gurus,
I’ve heard the rumor that Oracle will require all systems to be at the same level of support. For example, I might want to have engineering systems on network support, with enterprise systems on a mix of basic and premier support. Is this possible?
    Regards
    VENU

    VENU,
When you purchase Premier Support, all systems must be licensed for Premier Support. See also the Support Policies document (from linux.oracle.com):

  • Quality sound cards with good linux support

Since my Auzentech XFI forte is doomed on linux according to most of the internet (if you have one and made it work then please  PLEASE tell me how ) I'm gonna need a new one. Onboard sound just doesn't cut it anymore for me.
What I'm looking for is a good quality sound card that works perfectly on linux and isn't too expensive.
I don't care about 5.1 or 7.1, I mostly use headphones so high quality stereo output is of most importance.
Are there any sound card manufacturers that have some love for linux?
How are the Asus Xonar cards. I've read good reviews about them but I know nothing about how they work on linux.

I had an M-Audio Delta 1010lt once that had studio quality sound, linux support is good on the entire delta series.

  • Oracle Linux support subscription. for Oracle employees

I am using RHEL 5 but could not find wireshark trace and I beleive that you need to have Oracle Linux support subscription to access yum repositories. How an Oracle employee can update the software?

You can also install wireshark and dependend packages using oracle public yum by following the instructions on

  • ZFS backup -- Legato Networker / Solstice Backup - supported?

Does Legato Networker/Solstice Backup support backing up ZFS file systems?
Has anyone tried backing up mounted ZFS snapshots?

Specifically I am looking at being able to break the pool up in to various daily backups, but I noticed naming a filesystem doesn't back up the filesystems beneath it. (ie, /zpool/home doesn't mean /zpool/home/group2/bob gets backed up)
Is there a good strategy for backing up snapshots instead of the live filesystem?I think your only choices are to either use 'all' and let the client gather all the live filesystems, or name what you want to gather explicitly. There's not really any other choices. (This is a problem for some Networker admins even without having ZFS involved).
One option is to have a script maintain the save set list. At least then you don't have to do it by hand. You could make it smart enough to add in new filesystems, and you could easily have it reference snapshots instead of the live filesystem.

  • Where is the GNU/Linux support?

I was looking for BlackBerry GNU/Linux support as part of our initiative to move to GNU/Linux desktops and found that RIM doesn't support it. Interestingly I have found a third party solution that supports BlackBerrys on GNU/Linux. It looks like that may be our temporary solution until we can phase out the BlackBerrys. I can't believe a company as big as RIM doesn't doesn't support GNU/Linux though.

You mean, for the free Reader? Nowhere; there isn't such a thing. Here is a link link for general support: Contact Customer Care, although experience shows that you get better support in these forums. Only remember that they are user to user forums and no fellow user is under the obligation to reply any question, so you must be prepared to be patient at times, as Test Screen Name says.

  • How many Physical CPUs Arch Linux Supports?

How many Physical CPUs does Arch Linux Support, the traditional 2?
Can it support 4 or more Physical CPUs, How?
By Physical CPUs I take RedHat deffinition :
Red Hat defines physical CPUs equivalently to sockets, so a multi-core and/or hyperthreading CPU is counted as a single CPU or socket when determining whichedition of Enterprise Linux to deploy.
    Thanks

    Let's put it this way.
Linux can likely support more cpu's than you can afford.
That is, unless you are super rich..
If that is the case..then by all means.....
    ....donate!
EDIT: After some peeking around.. I found this.
SGI Altix 4700 incorporates the shared-memory NUMAflex™ architecture, which simplifies software development, workload management and system administration. It supports up to 512 processors under one instance of Linux and as much as 128TB of globally shared memory. Supporting these powerful capabilities is the NUMAlink™ interconnect, which leads the industry in bandwidth and latency for superior performance on cluster applications. The SGI Altix 4700 represents a versatile solution for shared or distributed memory applications of any scale.
Likely SGI has a few tweaks that haven't percolated into the mainline kernel yet (pending or rejected)..But sgi usually pushes the high end mutiprocessor systems..
    So.. around 512?

No, the 3D graph in LabVIEW is an Active X control and therefore a
Widnows only feature. If the graphics are not to complicated you may try
to look into drawing your own 3D graphs into a picture control which
would work on any LabVIEW platform. Other than that you would have to
rely on external packages to do 3D graphics under Linux.

  • WLAN card Linux support

The K8N Neo Platinum motherboard seems to be available bundled with a MSI WLAN card.
Is this card  supported in Linux?

    I am asking this beforehand.
I will not buy a card without Linux support.
If the support is so poor, that no official MSI source can even tell me whether the
card works under Linux, I am unlikely to decide towards MSI.
I am still interested, however. I do not know what card is bundled with MSI K8N Neo Platinum
except that it is 54 Mbps one. Someone from MSI should know. However, I am unable to find
a mail address or even a from to contact MSI directly. Is there anyone on this forum who
could confirm that the card which is bundled with the motherboard does work in Linux and
post a link to the drivers?
I am unable to search for further information as I do not know what chipset is on the card.

    jleckie,
Sorry to hear about your problem importing .DOC files and
.JPG images. This is a known problem with the Flash Player under
Linux. To resolve it, you'll need to follow the instructions on our
"Preliminary Linux Support" page that appeared when you first
    visited buzzword.acrobat.com.
For your convenience, here are the instructions. In order to
successfully complete these instructions, you will need the
administrator password. Enter it when prompted after the first sudo
    command.
    1. Ensure you have the latest versions of the automake,
libssl-dev, and libicu-dev packages. For example, from the command
    line:
    sudo apt-get install automake libssl-dev libicu36-dev
    2. Download the latest version of the flashsupport project
from Sourceforge. For example, from the command line:
    wget
    http://downloads.sourceforge.net/flashsupport/flashsupport-9.0.1.tgz?modtime=1189805203&bi g_mirror=0
    3. Extract the contents of the tar file. For example, from
    the command line:
    tar xvf flashsupport-9.0.1.tgz
    4. Build the flashsupport library. For example, from the
    command line:
    cd flashsupport
    sh configure
    make
    5. Install the flashsupport library. For example, from the
    command line:
    sudo cp .libs/libflashsupport.so /usr/lib
