Leica,  Aperture & f/stop info

As many of you know, and has been well documented on this discussion board:  When impporting Leica DNG files into Aperture: the f/stop and detailed lens info is not displayed by Aperture.
A work around which adds one step:  Initially import the photos into either Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Lightroom-- do nothing to them and then export them as DNG files...effectively nothing has changed.  Then import them directly into Aperture:

I think I understand the questions being asked here, but please forgive me if not. Certainly I can talk about the M9.
With the Leica M system of cameras there is no mechanical or electronic connection between the lens and the body that transfers information about the lens' aperture setting. That is, the camera does not know what the lens is set to and so does not have metadata for aperture, f-stop, whatever. As such, there is no f-stop metadata for software like Aperture to work with.
The thing to be aware of is that the Leica rangefinder camera concept dates from the 1920s, revamped into the current system in the 1950s, with digital capability added in the 2000s. Think of an M9 as a box with a very nice sensor to which a long history of very nice lenses can be attached and you've got it. The latest lenses can tell the M9 camera what they are (via a physical code engraved on the lens' bayonet mount which is read by the camera) but cannot transfer f-stop metadata. There is none to transfer and no means to transfer it if there was. They are purely mechanical lenses that make superb images.
M9 images do include metadata for parameters other than f-stop, as the camera body does know what shutter speed was used, what the ISO was, etc.

  • Processing in Aperture never stops

I was importing images into Aperture last weekend when the spinning beachball appeared and I had no option but to Force Quit. Now every time I try relaunching Aperture, it indicates it is processing but never stops. I've tried canceling in the Activity screen but even though it says it's canceling the processing, it never stops.
This may have created a second issue as well. Whenever I select a project, I can see the images in browser view, but if I try changing to Split View or Viewer mode, I always get the spinning beachball.
    Any ideas?

  • Aperture stripping caption info using aperturetoFTPpro plug in

I have been uploading large jpegs onto another server using ftp plug-in with Aperture. But it strips the photo info, captions etc from the file, which is crucial information for my clients. Does any one know why this is happening, If I could ftp directly from iphoto or Photoshop elements even, it would be easier for me as I don't find aperture useful for multiple batch changes in file names and captions.
Currently I have been editing the file names and comments in iphoto, exporting 'version name' (other wise it exports the original file name) to a folder on the desktop and then importing these files into aperture where I use a plug in AperturetoFTPpro. I do have the export version box checked and not the 'master' box - By now i've lost track of which it thinks the 'master' or 'version' is!
not sure what's causing the problem, iphoto or aperture.
When i look at the metadata in aperture, I can't see the captions, but if i open the same file in photoshop and do 'apple i' the info is there.

Have you checked with the Font Book Utility if there are still any font families marked with an exclamation mark as duplicates?
If the upgrade to 3.2.2. does not resolve your problem, try if running Aperture in 32bit mode will help.
I am not entirely sure if duplicate fonts might cause the problem - the last crash with nik plug-ins reported in this forum that were related to duplicate Arial fonts  (Re: Nik Plugin Crash Issues) was with the viveza plug-in, not with the colorefex plug-in, also the crash occured when selecting the plug-in from the menu "Performing @selector(a_editWithPlugIn:) from sender NSMenuItem", not  with a bad access when addressing the graphics card.

So your problem might be related to the  ATIRadeonX3000GLDriver; maybe the plugin is still using an old Snow Leopard version, that may be incompatible with Lion?

  • Aperture 3 Software Info

For somehow, software info is not showing if I am using Aperture to import photos from camera. I have been using Nikon Transfer for all my imports from camera. EXIF info only shows if its transferring from Nikon Transfer but if I am transferring through Aperture, it shows nothing.
Same case with LR. It only shows software info for Nikon Software but if use Aperture, it shows nothing.
Any idea what's going on here? It is important for me to see which software I am using to transfer my photos. Why software info is not embedding if I am using Aperture 3.
BTW, I have yet to see any problem with A3.

  • Aperture has stopped showing some, but not all, keywords on photos

I imported some new photos today and noticed that Aperture seems to have stopped displaying some, but not all, of my keywords. I'm noticing this on a large number of my existing photos.
For example, I've selected a photo and the Keywords tab of the Metadata pane lists: Amanda, iPhoto Original, Judy, and Zoo. That appears to be correct. However, the Keywords field in the top of the Metadata pane only shows iPhoto Original, and the only keyword displayed in the grid view is iPhoto Original.
Switching to a different metadata display does not help, nor does rebuilding the library. Reassigning the keywords seems to help, but that's not really an option for > 7,000 photos.
Anyone know why this is happening? Can I fix this?

    PowerMac Dual G5 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Aperture 1.1.2

After poking around with BBEdit in my Aperture library, I think I see the problem. I chose a photo that Aperture won't display all the keywords and re-added them. I then compared all the files in the library for that photo with the same files in a backup library I had set aside.
It appears that at some point Aperture got the IPTC keywords out of sync with the actual keywords on the photos. Looking at the Version-1.apversion file (which is actually a .plist file), I can see that both copies have the same keywords on them (called tags in the plist), but the IPTCProperties.keywords summary does not reflect all the tags actually on the photo. Aperture appears to just display the keywords stored in the IPTC keyword summary instead of checking to see what keywords the photo actually has.
So, the keywords are still there, but the summary that Aperture displays is wrong and a library rebuild doesn't appear to rebuild the keyword summary.
My options at this point appear to be either re-apply all my keywords or write a tool to fix it for me (I guess being a developer has it's perks). I'll definitely be filing a bug on this...

  • Some Aperture Brushes stop working??

I have recently upgraded my iMac (i5 with 12GB RAM) from 10.8.5 to 10.9.3, upgraded Aperture to 3.5.1. Pretty much my first editing session, and I discover that about half the Aperture brushes have stopped working. This happens on previously unedited images, both JPG and RAW. All referenced images.
These brushes seem to work fine:
    Retouch
    Skin Smoothing
    Burn
    Tint
    Definition
    Vibrancy
    Halo Reduction
    Highlights and Shadows
    Sharpen
These brushes don't work - the brush menu comes up, I can change the setting, but the brush does not show, and I can't brush anything:
    Dodge
    Polarise
    Intensify Contrast
    Contrast
    Saturation
    Blur
    Sharpen
    Noise reduction
    Curves
    Enhance
    Levels
I tried changing various brush settings, doesn't seem to help. I have submitted an a bug report to Apple.
Any ideas from the forum, has anyone run into this?

A reboot seems to have fixed it.

  • Aperture import stopped working?

I have used Aperture for about a year now and love it. Never really had much of a problem with it. I recently went to add photo's from my Rebel XT's CF card and it popped up like normal. I selected the photo's from the card to import and told it was folder to add it too. Everything took a few minutes as usual then showed it was import all the photo's BUT they were not in the folder or main library. I checked my storage location (Firewire external drive) and the photo's were built and added in the librarys folders. I then reboot the iMac to double check everything. Then I tryed to import them directly from the folder it added them too originally and still they did not show up in Aperture. Anyone have any ideas? This just suddenly start.
I am running Aperture with all updates and OS X 10.4.11 on an iMac 20 2.16 Intel with 2GB's of RAM and ATI Radeon X1600 256K Card.

No one has any suggestions...??? HELP!

  • How to stop info and start loop over when file not found.

I have a program that I want to run in a loop as long as there are files in a certain dir. When all the files have been read they are moved to another dir. I want this program to have a continuous loop but when the "read characters from file.vi" is send a "Not a Path" I dont want to be prompted for a file because there can be no user interaction. When my program has read and anylized all the data, I want it to keep going in a loop so when more files are put in this dir it will read again.

    Hi,
create a while loop and use the file/directory-info vi (file i/o ->
advanced) to get the list of existing files. If files exist (case structure)
iterate through every one by using a for loop. Now you can read all files
and when finished move them into the new directory. After that you can
analyze the whole data. At last leave the case to wait until the next files
are stored in the directory. Cause you used the file/directory-info vi, you
    won't get the dialog!
    hope that will help

  • Aperture has stopped recognizing RAW from my Canon SL1. It now displays "Unsupported Format. According to Apple Aperture should support RAw from the SL1.

I have 3.4.4 installed. Yesterday Aperture recognized RAW from my SL1; today it does not. I have already deleated the plist and repaired permissions to no avail. Suggestions.

I'm stymied at this point. I would like to try to redownload Aperture, but the APPStore will not allow it. In any case before I would do that I'd need to know how to reclaim my libraries after reinstalling.
If Aperture is installed, you cannot redownload it from the AppStore. Move it to the Trash, but do not empty the Trash, open the AppStore and sign in. If Aperture is not showing on the "Purchased" tab, reload the page with ⌘R. Now you should be able to reinstall Aperture, if you bought it originally from the AppStore.
But in this case, I think reinstalling the system would be more promissing. Tonight a new version of Mt. Lion has been released. Perhaps running the Software update will activate the new raw support again.
Some voodoo - I am not sure at all, if this can help in this case: With MacOS X 10.7.4 it sometimes helped to register the raw support for your camera with the launch services database - maybe this old problem has reoccured.

  • The Loupe in Aperture has stopped working just filled with grey whatever I settings I give it.

Used to work fine. Am I missing something obvious here?!

    Aperture 2.1.4
    OS X Lion 10.7.5
That what I suspected. The loupe is one of the features that does not work well with Aperture 2 in Lion and Mt. Lion, that is a known bug.
For full compatibility with Lion and Mt. Lion you will need to update to Aperture 3. The version that is now available from the AppStore, is no longer as expensive as the earlier versions of Aperture used to be.

  • Leica M9-P and f/stop overide.

I created my first profile tonight, but with some problems.
Leica lenses are completely manual, so the f/Stop information is estimated in DNG file.  Unfortunately, even though I used one f/Stop for my set-of-nine photos, the information in the DNG file estimated that I had used three different f/Stops.
I wish I could for overide the automatic grouping in Adobe Lens Profile Creater, and manually specify the the f/Stop.
Until then, what is the easiest way to edit the f/Stop info in the DNG file?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Possible answer to my own question, I guess I can use exiftool.exe and exiftoolGUI.exe to change the DNG files f/Stop value, and then refeed the images into Adobe Lens Profile Creator?
I would still like the feature in Adobe Lens Profile Creator to overide the automatic grouping, and to be able to manually specify the f/Stop and which images belong to it.

  • I have a corrupt Photo file, that makes Aperture stop working properly.

I recently imported some of my old photos from a CD to the Aperture Library. Every time I open that project or try to work with any of those photos Aperture will stop working. (in a very aggressive way)
    The viewer wont update.!
It wont make any change or save anything.!
I have to quit and restart Aperture to have it working again, I don't know what is wrong.
    Any Idea?
Maybe new aperture .5 will fix this??
    TKS
G5 quad   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   big ram

Another option would be to quit Aperture, remove the project from the Library using the Finder, reopen Aperture (the troublesome project will now be greyed out), throw the troublesome project out, and finally reimport the images back into Aperture. The only problem is you now have to re-do any adjustments etc. for that project. If he project has other images you do not want to re-do you could try just removing the problem import group, go back into aperture and then throw those images out, quit (you may have to force quit) Aperture and then restart Aperture. I did the above on a test Aperture library, but as usual you have to be carefull. Do not do any of this without first duplicating the troublesome library.

  • TS4471 Aperture APP started installing after I purchased it then stopped. How do I get the installation to complete?

My Aperture APP stopped installing. How do I get it to complete the installation?

    Frank,
I found the Aperture APP icon in the appliction folder. When I click on it, an icon opens on the bar at the bottom of the screen and the application opens and is workable. However, when I finish working with my photo editing, and close the application, the bar icon desapears and I need to to back to the application folder to click the icon there to open the application again.
I know you suggested I delete the app from the folder, reboot, and reinstall. But I'm embarassed to say that I don't know how to proceed with the deletion.
    Can you help?
    Thanks again,

  • Aperture stops responding when adding another iPhoto library

I bought Aperture so that I could merge/add my wife's laptop iphoto library with her iMac Iphoto library.  I have read all the forums and tried to make sure that everything was good to go for this process.  When I try the process Aperture just stops responding every time.  I have plenty of hard drive space, plenty of ram. check the librarys with the library first aid apps, everything!!  I am mad because this shouldn't be difficult.  Can anyone help.

How many photos and how long did you leave it before you decided it had stopped responding?
I was testing a theroy last week and did an import for 18,000 images, but with each image going to it's project so Aperture needed to create 18,000 projects for the import.
It stopped responding and to all intents it looked like it had died. But in Activity Monitor I kept an eye on how much memory was being used and noticed this was still changing over time so I let Aperture continue (even though it wasn't responding).
After about 4 hours, it crashed with a message saying it had caused the virtual mempory page file to 40+ GB which OS X decided was excessive and force quite Aperture. The point being, for those 4 hours when it appeared to have died, it was actually still working away.
So, first I'd recommend running the process overnight to give it enough time to finish or really die. If it really wont finish, it may be related to the Aperture/Mavericks memory leaks problems that have been reported here recently.
If you are not in a hurry, you could wait for Apple to stabilise the combination and see if it then works.
Alternatively, it you want to get it done quickly, here's what I'd try:
Which ever library you want to import, back it up and then open it directly in Aperture.
Organise the projects (what were events in iPhotos) into folders, say one folder for each year. So for example you now have a 2011 folder containing all your 2011 events (projects). CTRL + Click the 2011 folder and choose "Export->Folder As New Library". This will create a new library containing just the 2011 events.
Now, back in the main library tell Aperture to import this 2011 library and see if it handles the smaller (and Aperture created) library any better. If it does, you can go to the other library and repeat for each year of photos.
If it still doesn't, I try creating a brand new library in Aperture (File->Switch to libray->Other/New) and try importing the 2011 library into that.
Essentially you are trying two things with this approach. First, to see if smaller libraries import successfully. Second, to see if the import is successful when you import an Aperture created library into an Aperture created library (rather than an iPhoto created library into an iPhoto created library)

Oh, baby! This bad boy flies!! Here's what to expect:
I had 40,000 images in Aperture 3 and it was dog slow at everything. I installed 3.1 update today. It took 5 minutes to update the database and then behaved marginally better than before at ASIC library navigation. I was disappointed.
Then I QUIT the app. It took a couple of hours to "update files for sharing" with a counter that went to 110,000 images. So it must have updated every thumbnail and variation of preview. Turned it back on , and BAM. Came up fully in seconds. Paused for 10 seconds ten everything was lickrty split. For the first time ever, I can use the Projects view with all 791 projects and scroll quickly. I even put it in photos modevand whipped thru all 49,000 images!
Haven't done anybprocessing yet, but i'm liking it!!
    Jim
