Leica Dlux 4 question

I understand that Aperture does not yet support the Leica Dlux 4 Raw files. If I shoot the raw/jpeg combo with the dlux4, will Aperture import the jpegs? Then I would re-load the raw files when Aperture updates with the raw conversion.

I think I read somewhere that A3 does automatically do lenscorrection with the LX3/D-Lux 4. But you can't manually adjust it.
Or did I dream that ?
Nope, not a dream... here is the text from my post elsewhere...
All singing here as 33,456 Leica D-LUX 4 .RWL files now magically appear in my library. I shot RAW + jpeg since I bought the camera, and now I got it all...I am in for a bit of culling here, but I am very happy.
Plus, I think they did a ** good job because they look VERY close to the Leica jpgs (which are great) AND unlike some lesser RAW converters, the lens correction is applied beautifully. It was worth the wait.
PLUS, I now have a good place to put my HD movies from the camera as well.
THANKS APERTURE TEAM!
Note that since I shot RAW + jpg, it is obvious to me that the correction was applied since I have the jpg where the camera applies it internally to compare to. While there is some difference in color/exposure, etc. vs the jpg as is typical using different converters...the lens correction is absolute...meaning you could make the jpg copy semi-transparent and overlay it on the converted RAW, and everything aligns.
While I was as anxious as anyone to have Aperture 2 support this great camera, I did not want a partial solution, as others offered. Previously there were a number of other RAW converters that claimed support for DL4 and the LX3, but they did not do any correction and had a lot of distortion. I had written here that I assumed Apple wanted to either do the distortion conversion correctly or not at all, and I think Aperture 3 displays this.

  • Iphoto won't open raw files from leica dlux-6 camera.

I just purchased a leica d-lux 6 camera and use a macbook. seems that iphoto which I've been using for years  can not open raw files from this camera. Will it ever?  I downlaoded the free lightroom Leica gave and it can open raw but it seems to require more of a learning curve than iphoto. If I continue to use both lightroom and iphoto on same mac computer cause problems?  Any suggestions?  I guess i could shoot in jpeg and raw and use only iphoto for jpegs and use LR for the occasional raw shots?

Correct, the D-Lux 6 is not currently supported for Raw in iPhoto or Aperture. Apple may add support in a future update. Let them know you want it:
iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback
LR is a very powerful, professional grade application and yes, requires a lot more learning than iPhoto. If that doesn't interest you, then respectfully, I would suggest that you just shoot Jpeg.

  • Mac OS X 10.4.9 and Leica RAW

I installed the subject update, which is supposed to include support for the Leica DLUX-3 RAW format.
I am still unable to view images from this camera in Aperture.
I tried the "Migrate" function, but to no avail.
Is there an additional step which needs to be taken?

    Steve and Brent,
Thank you for taking the time to post those links.
Steve, I had come across the topic you provided before I initially posted this thread.
Since I was looking specifically for the answer to the original question, regarding why 10.4.9 wasn't recognizing the DLUX-3, which j c swain kindly answered above, I didn't take note, nor care about, any of the other information.
Brent, the topic you noted is helpful as I didn't know these issues existed with Leica cameras. I'm a Canon guy. Again, thank you!
I'm flagging this thread as "answered", since the original question I posed was answered by j c swain, above.

  • Leica D-Lux 3 RAWs

Unfortunately trying to import RAW files from Leica D-Lux 3 result in a "Unsupported Image Format"...
    Any other noted this?

I found these detailed instructions on how to 'dupe' Aperture to recognising the leica Dlux 3 RAW files (pasted below along with the link to the site) . It was on on MacOShints.com. ... Has anyone done this and how well does it work ?
I havent tried it yet but Iimagin an alternative (maybe less risky) way to get around it is to convert the RAW files to DNG's using Adobe DNG converter once imported from the camera, and then import into Aperture. I'm about to try this - before messing around with the Aperture settings !
This could be further enhances by using the Automator Robot to automatically convert and delete old files on import from CD card. If anyone has already done this, could they possibly publish the automator file ? Otherwise, if i create one, i'll be sure to do so.
Good luch and keep us posted !!
How does everyone find the DLUX 3 anyway ? Mine's just arrived !!
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20061025124051903
Aperture only imports .DNG files made from raw files that were created by certain cameras. Newer cameras (like my Leica D-Lux 3) may not yet be supported by OS X. Other raw-capable cameras may not yet be supported either. This hint may work for many unsupported cameras.
Aperture .DNG importing and interpretation depends on a file called Raw.plist, which lives very deep in your System folder. This file contains information about how to treat the .DNG files based on which model of camera produced the raw file.
Here's how I tricked Aperture into handling my raw photos made by my unsupported Leica:
I downloaded the free Adobe DNG Converter app (ADC) from Adobe's website. Using Image Capture, I downloaded the .raw files from my camera into a folder (called RAWs) on my desktop. I created a new folder (DNGs) on the desktop, and then told ADC to convert all files in "RAWs" and put them in "DNGs". The settings for the converter (available in the ADC's preferences) were:
    JPEG Preview->None
    Compression(Lossless) checked
    Image Conversion Method->Preserve Raw Image
Original Raw File->Embed Original Raw File->unchecked
I imported one of the .dng files into Aperture. It imports, but says that it is an unsupported image format. I looked around the metadata for the Camera Model entry. Aperture lists mine as "D-LUX 3". I wrote that down.
I started up my plist-editing application. You can use Property List Editor if you have it on your machine, I expect. I used PlistEdit Pro.
In the finder, I navigated to System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/ Versions/A/Frameworks/ImageIO.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Raw.plist and copied (not moved) that file to the Desktop in case I made a mistake. I then opened the original file in its original location in PlistEdit Pro.
I found the entry most similar to the camera I have. In this case, there was a Property List called LEICA-DIGILUX 2, and the Value of that entry was Panasonic-DMC-LC1. This tells Aperture that when the camera that created the raw file is this LEICA model, treat it just like you do with that Panasonic model. The Panasonic has its own Property List with lots of data about how to interpret the raw data.
I duplicated that entry. I then edited the duplicate so the property list is called LEICA-D-LUX 3. You may need to experiment with that name, but the syntax seems to be MANUFACTURER-CAMERAMODEL. Look at the other entries for guidance; note that first hyphen seems to be mandatory. I left the reference to the Panasonic camera as it was.
I saved the edited Raw.plist file in its original location, closed all my apps, started up Aperture, and imported the DNGs without a hitch.
If your camera is totally different from all of the entries in the original Raw.plist file you may have difficulty. Your DNG files might look wretched in Aperture if you guess wrong about how the system should treat that raw data. In my case, I was lucky in that my Leica D-Lux 3 has very similar raw data to the Leica Digilux 2, which is similar to that Panasonic camera.

  • Why doesn't Photoshop CS4 open DNG files created in Photoshop CS5?

I download raw photo files from my Leica Dlux 4 and convert the Leica raw files to DNG files using CS5 Bridge.  Recently I discovered that when I try to access these DNG files in Photoshop CS4 I get a message saying 'cannot access this file'.  The files also do not show up as thumbnails in CS4 Bridge.  Do I need an upgrade or a plug in to see DNG files created in CS5 Bridge in Photoshop CS4?

    System: Windows 7
Third party plug-ins: Not to my knowledge?
    Quicktime: I believe so.
Save Method: I save as two copies, one in the default Photoshop format (PSD) and then I hit "save as" to save as PNG.

You need to check which ACR version supports your camera and download that ACR version. Just replace with the existing version and you should be able to use PSE-Editor Cameraa Raw Editor

  • Did Apple remove support for DNG files generated out of Capture One?

I use Capture One to convert my Leica Dlux-4 RAW files into DNG format and then use Aperture2.1.4 as my photo processing tool.
After I ran the latest OS update - Aperture gives a "Unsupported file format" message for all the DNG files.
Is it possible that Apple removes support for photo formats in the OS updates?
Anyone encountered the same issue and found a solution?
    Thx

Go in the adjustment tab, and the first thing you'll see under the histogram is "Raw fine tuning". By default, "2.0" is selected. When importing DNG, you can switch it to "2.0 DNG" this is used to read DNGs from cameras Aperture doesn't support.
Maybe the update made it go back to its default "2.0" while before you where on "2.0 DNG". If I'm right, setting it to "2.0 DNG" will fix the problem.
P.S. sorry if I said "raw precision" instead of "Raw fine tuning" in the first place. My Aperture is in French and the name in French is "Réglage de précision raw" and I did a bad translation.

  • Leica Monochrom and another question

Does anyone know whether, or when, Aperture will support the Leica Monochrom camera. Seems odd that it doesn't do so.
Also, ( and maybe this is related ), my version of Aperture is 3.4 running on my 2010 27" iMac under OS 10.7.5, is this the latest available under that version of the OS? I note that there's a Aperture version 3.4.5 on the App Store, but my iMac's Software Update will not update to that.
    Thanks!

No one here know, only Apple does and they don;t announce in advanced. There have been other disscusions asking this, check the More Like This box on the right hand side of the page for other threads.

3.4.5 should run on Lion 10.7.5 so a couple of questions.
1 Did you buy Aperture from the App Store originally or did you buy an older boxed or on-line version?
2 Is Aperture installed in your systems Application folder and named Aperture.  Software needs these both to be true in order to see the app and update it.
3 Finally what version of Aperture are you running. Go to Aperture->About Aperture and report the version number listed there.

  • Why no support for the Leica M9 in LR 2.6 RC?

Hi - bemused that there's no support for the M9 in this release (especially as LR is bundled with the M9).  Even more confusing as the Standard Adobe calibration profile for the M9 that comes with the LR3 Beta is pretty good (beats the embedded profile that comes with the Leica DNGs) - and this can be added to the LR2.5 profile library with a bit of copying and pasting.
I'd be grateful to hear from Adobe if there's any chance of a good M9 profile making it to the 2.6 final version.  Seems a shame to miss this opportunity.
    Thanks

    Hello Chris,
    thanks for the nice feedback.
For the moment, I will use LR for the fast preview of all images,

    image permit it.
    (sorry for my english!)
Lets hope that we will get through all that without loosing our

  • Camera profiles in DNG from camera (Leica S2, M8)

    Hi all,
I´m reviewing captures from the Leica S2, which is saving Raw in the DNG format after capture. There is only one camera profile in the DNG files ("embedded"). Compared to a JPEG (mode DNG+JPG for capture) of the same shot the color rendering with the embedded profile is more saturated and slightly shifted in the hues. Greens get an ugly plastic look.
I have captures with Leica M8, too. They have more camera profiles: Embedded, Adobe Standard, Camera Standard and ACR legacy (3.6, 4.4).
As I understand Leica M8 DNGs are supported by Adobe with camera specific camera profiles while Leica S2 DNGs are NOT supported by Adobe with specific camera profiles.
    Please can someone clarify this?
Second question: Is the Leica S2 embedded profile a camera specific profile (from Leica) or a general camera profile? Who is in charge for the embedded profile?
    Mike
((posted this yesterday in DNG forum too, but this forum seems to be more visited))

    Jeff Schewe wrote:
As far as I can see, any support for the S2 raw files is preliminary (which means it's NOT officially supported with a full range of color profiles).
    Jeff,
I´ve got shots from two S2 cameras and they are pre-production (in terms of firmware, Leica will update this).
    I process them with ACR 5.6 / LR 2.6.
As far as I understand "embedded" means color rendering as supposed by the camera maker (in this case Leica) and "Adobe Standard" does mean an official camera profile from Adobe. "Embedded" is pretty close to the color rendering of the S2´s JPEGs.
By the way, Capture One does open the DNG with a "DNG File Neutral" ICC profile. The color rendering is quite different. I know there is no DNG camera profile support in other applications than ACR/LR.

  • The "aperture" value in EXIF from Leica M9

    Hi, Aperture
I'm a Leica M9 camera owner, and I found that in Apple Aperture 3, I cannot see the "aperture" value from pictures taken from Leica M9, also, the "lenses" information not available in the "Metadata" tab.
I attached a screen shot of my Aperture window and hope Apple guys could consider fix it. I can provide samples DNG or JPEG files from this camera, if needed.
    Thanks,

I had the same question, and this discussion answers it.

  • Leica M9-P and f/stop overide.

I created my first profile tonight, but with some problems.
Leica lenses are completely manual, so the f/Stop information is estimated in DNG file.  Unfortunately, even though I used one f/Stop for my set-of-nine photos, the information in the DNG file estimated that I had used three different f/Stops.
I wish I could for overide the automatic grouping in Adobe Lens Profile Creater, and manually specify the the f/Stop.
Until then, what is the easiest way to edit the f/Stop info in the DNG file?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Possible answer to my own question, I guess I can use exiftool.exe and exiftoolGUI.exe to change the DNG files f/Stop value, and then refeed the images into Adobe Lens Profile Creator?
I would still like the feature in Adobe Lens Profile Creator to overide the automatic grouping, and to be able to manually specify the f/Stop and which images belong to it.

  • Unsupported dng leica m9

I have recently imported a series of DNG files from a Leica M9 into Aperture.  I receive a message that these are in an "unsupported image format."  Has anyone had and resolved this problem.
    Cheers,
    -George

HI William, Thank you fro your quick reply.  Please see the answer to your questions below:
Have you tried quitting and restarting Aperture? YES If you try and view one of the files via double clicking in the Finder, does it work OK? NO
How are you importing them? Are you using a CF card reader, or directly via USB connection to the camera?  SD reader built into my MacBook Pro with Retina display.
Have you previously used RAW files from the M9 with success, or is this the first time you've imported M9 photos?
Yes, this has worked fine in the past.  The photos are also not readable by Lightroom nor do DNG to DNG conversions via Adobe work.  I suspect there might be a formatting issue with the SD Card.  I will reformat and see if that helps on new images.  It will be ashame to lose the old images.

  • Leica, Noctilux 50mm f/0.95

    I am using Lightroom version 4.4 on a Mac OS X 10.7.5.
When performing a search for pictures based on the Aperture size as the criterion, the aperture sizes that are displayed by Lightroom version 4.4 are not correct for the Noctilux 50mm f/0.95 lens.
Does anyone have the same problem? Is there a solution to the issue?

To answer my own question, the M9 uses an exposure reading external to the lens to compare with the light coming through the lens to estimate the aperture-setting of the lens:
    http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/111917-f-stop-shift.html#post1184 234
"The reported f/stops in the M9 EXIF are a guesstimate based on comparing the scene illumination as read by the little blue dot above the Leica logo with the ttl illumination as read by the internal meter..."
    http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/2853117#forum-post-36073766
#3: "...there is no communication between the mechanical aperture & the electronics of the camera, so the data is derived & not all that accurate, particularly in low light..."

  • Leica,  Aperture & f/stop info

As many of you know, and has been well documented on this discussion board:  When impporting Leica DNG files into Aperture: the f/stop and detailed lens info is not displayed by Aperture.
A work around which adds one step:  Initially import the photos into either Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Lightroom-- do nothing to them and then export them as DNG files...effectively nothing has changed.  Then import them directly into Aperture:

I think I understand the questions being asked here, but please forgive me if not. Certainly I can talk about the M9.
With the Leica M system of cameras there is no mechanical or electronic connection between the lens and the body that transfers information about the lens' aperture setting. That is, the camera does not know what the lens is set to and so does not have metadata for aperture, f-stop, whatever. As such, there is no f-stop metadata for software like Aperture to work with.
The thing to be aware of is that the Leica rangefinder camera concept dates from the 1920s, revamped into the current system in the 1950s, with digital capability added in the 2000s. Think of an M9 as a box with a very nice sensor to which a long history of very nice lenses can be attached and you've got it. The latest lenses can tell the M9 camera what they are (via a physical code engraved on the lens' bayonet mount which is read by the camera) but cannot transfer f-stop metadata. There is none to transfer and no means to transfer it if there was. They are purely mechanical lenses that make superb images.
M9 images do include metadata for parameters other than f-stop, as the camera body does know what shutter speed was used, what the ISO was, etc.
