Leica M8 File Support Gone?

I've been using Aperture on my new iMac for a couple of weeks now with my Leica M8 - all was working wonderfully until today when I imported a card of M8 images into Aperture and all I get is the "red screen of death" telling me the file format for my camera is now suddenly unsupported. I shoot in RAW and never had this issue since Apple's RAW update earlier this summer.
The only thing that I've changed on my computer is I inadvertently allowed a software update of Adobe Camera Raw (and other CS 3 components) via Adobe Updater for CS3. Anyone else use a camera that they lost file support in Aperture for? I looked for a download of Apple's freshest RAW update but it appears that the Leica definitions were part of a Camera RAW update this summer that was bundled with an OS X update, so no download so far for just a download of the newest Apple RAW file support. Ideally I'd love to re-apply a RAW file support update and get my M8 back in the good graces of Aperture.
Anyone else run into a similar issue with their camera? Any ideas to solve this?
With thanks..
Roger

It is possible that the raw.plist has become corrupted, or the M8 has somehow screwed the writing to the exif camera make and model tag in the DNG.
A couple of things you can do to check this is
1. Copy a dng to your desktop and right click (ctrl click) the dng and select get info. It should show Leica Camera AG in the Device Make and M8 Digital Camera in the Device Model. If that's the case then we need to check further into the Raw.plist entries.
2. The raw.plist resides in
System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/Im ageIO.framework/Versions/A/Resources.
You can use an editor such as PlistEdit Pro to view and edit such a file. It is a system file and as such is locked but we can open it in plistedit pro just to check the entry for the M8 is intact.
PlistEdit Pro is available as a trial download with full functionality. Open raw.plist and scroll down to find Leica Camera AG-M8 Digital Camera. It should show up as a dictionary entry with 28 key/value pairs. If this entry is missing, perhaps this is where your problem lies.
Please report back. Further reading about hacking the raw.plist and M8 can be found on

Let me know if you still have problems.

Aperture's camera support comes from the OS. Does not look like the Leica X Vario is currently suppored. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5371.

  • Leica DNG not supported

Leica RAW DNG file not supported by aperture ?

Leica RAW DNG file not supported by aperture ?
The raw support is camera specific. several leica cameras are supported by Aperture, some of the newest cameras are only supported in Aperture 3.4 or later.
If your camera is not yet on the list, use the software that came with your camera to develope the raw files, before importing them to Aperture.
Also see this footnote, in the link that stedman1 posted:
Aperture works with most DNG files generated from cameras that support this format and with DNG files generated by the Adobe DNG Converter with the “Convert to Linear Image” option turned off.

  • Just Installed Leopard and all my files are GONE!

Yesterday I installed Leopard and now all of my files are gone. I don't remember being asked how I wanted to install it...but on www.apple.com/support, it said that there were options like "Erase and Install." I don't remember choosing that, but if I had, is there any way to restore my files or does it do a zero erase of the hard drive? I don't have anything backed up, so thus far, I have lost 3 term papers that I was in the middle of and don't have anywhere else... Can anyone help?

Even with minor OS patches and updates, I don't rely on "just do it" but verify and repair, backup, and only then apply updates (and lately, waiting a week first).
    Stop using that disk.
See if Data Rescue II demo can see anything or not (you should install 10.4.10 on another disk drive and work from there, guess you are now?)
Pre-existing errors that you weren't away of? If anything I've thought for a long time that installers should:
warn about and offer to backup
set a restore point in some manner
verify and repair the boot drive
( and this would be done in Single User Mode behind the back )
updates should be written to disk, but applied on restart, again in Single user mode
No weekly or monthly backup routine or schedule? no DVDs with your photos and papers? not in 3 yrs!!! kind of hard to understand you never heard of backups, or burned a DVD of documents for "safe keeping."

  • Arching of files is gone from the downloads and documents folder

The arching list of files is gone when rolling over the downloads and documents folder. I removed the downloads folder by accident yesterday from the dock. Once I found it, I replaced it back on the dock and now the arching of files is gone on both folders. I have them as lists by date. I have restarted my MacBook Pro several times, clicked on the dock and properties and nothing seems to work. Does anyone know how to get it back? Are there any settings that I am missing?. Thanks!

Right click on the folder in the Dock (or hold down the Control key and click on it if you have a one-button mouse), and choose "Stack" under the "Display as" section, and "Fan" under the "View content as" section in the resultant contextual menu. You can also choose how they are sorted from this menu as well.

I had files stored on a hard drive that were not on my Mac. I used the hard drive for my first Time Machine back up, but it was not enough hard drive space to finish. Now those stored files are gone. Is there any way I can recover them?  No, they were not part of previous Time Machine backups, and I have checked both the hard drive the documents were lost on and the new one that I now use for backups. Any suggestions would be helpful, as the lost files are old pictures that are gone forever. :[ Thanks!

    1. Yes, if both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    2. Reformat the drives if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and remove the drive with the pictures from the list of items set to be excluded.

  • External hard drive, restore problem! Files are gone...?

All the files are gone... but the folders are still there.
    Here is what happened:
    Step 1
I restored everything from main HD (two disk striped RAID) to external hard disk (Western Digital MyBook 1TB ). The external disk was mac formated (Mac OS Extended - Journaled). Everything went just fine.
    Step 2
I boot the computer from the exernal drive. That also went just fine.
    Step 3
I create a new bigger RAID set from 4 internal disks.
    Step 4
Restoring then from external drive (now the boot volume) to the new internal RAID set went horribly wrong! Restoration had stopped at some point during the night and resulted weird issues.
Trying to boot the machine didn't work...
Trying to boot from external drive didn't work...
Trying to boot with option key down I got an HD icon called "EFI boot") which did not work...
So, I connected the external drive to a different mac (also leopard 10.5.7) and all the restored files copied in step 1 were gone! All the folders were still in place but files like images and stuff totally gone. Get info from the drive gives also around 930 Gb of free space... So they don't waste any space either.
What happened? How can I get my files back? Somehow I don't think they are deleted for good...
I already tried repairing with Disk utility and Disk Warrior and installing the latest drivers from WD website...
PS. Sorry for the language issues. English is not the native one for me...

I've used time machine in the past and couldn't get to the bottom of the problem so I've recently downloaded and am using carbon copy cloner and I get the same problem. The files that are missing are just word and number documents. Seems so odd.
    Thanks for replying

  • I deleated numbers and pages files and apps on my iPhone and when I got to work all my files were gone from numbers and pages on my iPad. How do I get those files back on my iPad?

My storage was getting low on my iCloud, so I decided to delete my files from numbers and pages on my iPhone and delete the apps on my phone because i  did not really use it on my phone.  When I got to work and clicked on pages and numbers on my iPad the files were gone. I assume the files were deleted through iCloud.  I did not want the files deleted on the iPad and would like to know how to get them back?

If you also backed up to your computer - you can restore from that backup - to retrieve the files. As far as I know- that should have no bearing on deleting them from iCloud - they should still be in that backup.
If you used iOS file sharing with your computer - and saved the files to your computer - you can retrieve them from there.
if the only place that the files were saved to was iCloud, I know of no way to get them back.

  • 10.4.9 - Finder no longer previews Leica RAW files

I know that there have been a billion requests for someone, anyone, to get Aperture to read Leica RAW files (I have given up on this one), but there is a more fundamental issue that has been created with 10.4.9
We can no no longer even see the image in the Finder preview. This is all we get...
    http://www.andybarton.com/preview.jpg>
How on earth is anyone supposed to find their images without being able to see them?
If there is anyone here with a bright idea, I'd be grateful to receive it.
Failing that, how can I revert to 10.4.8?
    Thanks in advance.

Use Lion Recovery to repair the startup disk and reinstall the Mac OS X if necessary.
Lion Recovery can also help you restore your files from a Time Machine backup.

  • Recorded audio files are gone after power outage during a concert

    Hello together,
yesterday I used Logic Pro X to record a concert at our school. I had connected my MacBook Air to our mixer via FireWire, and everything went fine until two minutes before the concert's ending, the power went out. My MacBook was still working from battery, however, Logic Pro stopped recording and all recorded files except for one audio file are gone. I have already tried to recover the lost data by using a data recovery app, but it didn't find anything.
Is there a way to recover the lost recordings? I mean, Logic must have written its audio files to the hard drive somewhere and even when everything crashed, I don't think the files got overwritten with zeros or something else that could have destroyed it...
    Many Regards,
    Leo Bernard
