Leica X1 DNG files not viewable thumbnails in Media Expression

Hi-
I just bought a Leica X1 which shoots raw in DNG format but the raw DNG files it creates to not display thumbnails in Media Expression (formerly a micorsoft product, now Phase one).
I am running mac OS X 10.6.4
One "solution" offered in the Leica forum was to run the Leica DNG file in DNG converter... I did and it worked but that is a really really clumsy solution to what I feel should not be a problem.... and renaming and deleting original files etc it a real PITA if you shoot any number of photos.
I know that Nikon had issues with new versions of NEF files which had something to do with "header changes" in the NEF file before ACR could decode them, and I'm wondering if there is some similar issue with DNG that I am not aware of.
Any information would greatly be appreciated.
cheers,
tom

the "appear for a moment" is probably Aperture showing the preview image in the .raw file, before deciding that it can't handle the raw image data.
(If it is this, then odds are Finder will show the images but Preview.app will also fail to.)
Clearly MacOS understands the .raw file format, but thinks that it doesn't have support for however your camera identifies itself in the EXIF data. Modifying the Raw.plist is the way to try, for now.

  • DNG files not showing thumbnails preview icon on mac, after reduce/resize pixel count. Mavericks 10.9.2, Photoshop CC, ACR 8.4.0.199. Any Solution?

This is driving me crazy. With today's huge file sizes it seem to me that for the majority of pictures a pixel count of 12-16 mega pixels y more than ok size for editing and make printings; for the professional jobs is a good idea to have the biggest file we can. Due to that i was trying to convert some NEF files to DNG, saving some space in the process, But the impossibility to preview the picture's thumbnails and the file size (it displays 0x0) immediately take me to 1984, (Windows 3.11). and those are bad memories.
I don't know if this is an apple's or adobe's error, but it needs to be solved.
         Anyone with the same predicament?

Thanks for your insight JimHess.  Someone else on another post pointed out how Photoshop changes the color profile and other things and then trying to make this file into a DNG again confuses Mavericks (and, presumably, other flavors of OS X).  Admittedly, the process I described is unorthodox and not what may want to do.  Thank you.
A.J.: First, I am offended by your suggestion to omit my comment.  I was simply trying to provide help in finding a cause of a general problem people are having across the internet.  That problem, as you pointed out, is that modifying a DNG in some way in photoshop results in the thumbnail no longer being visible.  Your modification is the size.  Mine was not.  But it was a general modification in photoshop and an attempt to reconstitute the file as a DNG that seems to be common theme, whether this workflow makes sense or not.  Additionally, I'm very new to digital photography and tried to be helpful.  I would advise you (as an educator who knows the consequences of negative first-time experiences) to be more mindful that not everyone on here is as experienced as you and everyone can benefit from being clearer in their questions and their comments.
Second, as JimHess pointed out, in manipulating a DNG file in any of the programs in a way that alters the actual file (not changing some setting that is ultimately stored in a side-car file or does not actually alter the photo) is probably the root of the problem.  Changing the file size by altering pixel count may first require one of your adobe products to physically alter the file information in a way that stops Mavericks from being able to recognize the contents as RAW information.  Does this make sense?

    Robert

  • Is there some secret to getting Pentax K-3 .dng files to display thumbnails when importing to an iPad (mini w/retina)? Files import fine, but no thumbnail. Mac OS has compatability with those files.

Is there some secret to getting Pentax K-3 .dng files to display thumbnails when importing to an iPad (mini w/retina)? Files import fine, but no thumbnail. Mac OS had compatibility with those files added long ago. Am I missing something?

I agree Terrance. However, I was able to copy other large batches of other files (my music for example) without any issues. The issue only showed up when copying iPhoto's library and/or the photos themselves. This was repeated 3 times; I copied all my other files to the drive then it unmounted on iPhoto. And, as I said, again when I started with a fresh reformat and just iPhoto. That does not seem like hardware to me if it is only happening with one set of files.
I have managed to get the iPhoto library to work on my other external drive. It wanted a rebuild twice and a thumbnail rebuild once. I am now attempting to copy it over to the new HGST internal drive.
Anyone have a suggestion for alternatives to iPhoto? I have aperture, maybe I will try that. But from what I understand, it just shares the same library as iPhoto.

  • .dng files not showing as thumbnails in Mac Finder

    Hi.
I'm in the process of converting to Lightroom for my photos on my Mac, and when I've downloaded the sample .dng files for the tutorials I notice that they do not appear in my Mac Finder folders as thumbnails. Clearly this is a bit of a disadvantage where photo files are concerned.
The .dng files I've downloaded all appear as identical graphical icons that look like a camera aperture.
Is there any way to get these files to show up as thumbnails on my Mac please?
    I'm running OS X 10.9.4 on a MacBook Pro.

They are the sample files available at the official Adobe Lightroom Support website, for use when following the official video tutorials. The metadata on them shows them to be from a Canon EOS 5D MkII.
They can be downloaded here:- How to manage your digital photos | Adobe Photoshop Lightroom tutorials If that link takes you to the overview page, they're in the block on the far left of the page, called 'Getting Started'.
(Actually, could you possibly do me a favour and download them from there to see if they show up as thumbnails on your computer? If they specifically don't, but other .dng files do, then it would prove that it is something about the files themselves that are to blame.)

  • DNG files showing no thumbnails mac osx 10.8.2

when i convert raw photos from my olympus omd em5 into DNG's and export them to my external hard drive , i do not get any thumbnail previews , they can only be seen if i view the files through lightroom4 import , if however i export in other formats such as jpeg ,tiff etc.. i get a preview thumbnail . Iam using latest imac and running osx 10.8.2 , does anyone have a fix for this , many thanks in advance , as i really like the idea of DNG, but would love to have a thumbnail preview, if anyone has a soloution i would be most grateful

Yup, as I said, luckily there's no problem for me with my NEFs either. And from memory (my iMac's in having its hard drive replaced so I can't check), I think it could read my old Fuji X100 RAFs without any issues too.
The point is that the Apple raw engine can read some but not all DNG files.
According to Apple, it's "most" if the camera produces native DNGs (which are as rare as rocking horse poop) or it can read some non-native DNG raw conversions, but for some others, only if you modify the DNG conversion by unchecking "Convert to Linear Image".
It may turn out that some DNG conversions can't be read by the Apple raw engine at all, or maybe are readable but Finder can't extract the JPEG for a thumbnail. In either case you'll have to stick to using Bridge or Lightroom or some other browser/DAM software that can interpret DNGs if you can't see them in the Finder & want to.
By the way, because it uses the Apple raw engine, shonky DNGs are blacked out in Aperture too (along with, I presume, iPhoto).

  • .NRW files not displaying thumbnails in Bridge

.NRW RAW files from Nikon P7800 do not display thumbnails or metadata in Bridge. PsCC, Bridge and CR 8.3 are all showing as up to date on CC Desktop App. Files display correctly in Lr 5.3. Any suggestions ?

    I have:
    PhotoshopCC>Edit>Preferences>CameraRaw>8.3.0.141
    BridgeCC>Edit>CameraRawPreferences>8.2.0.94
The computer found  6 files  named Camera Raw.8bi.  They are in pairs , two in the CS5 folder and two in the CS6 folder, two in the CC folder. One of each pair has >Program Files(x86)> The other one has  >Program Files>.
When I go to C:\ Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CC\File Formats\ only one (Camera Raw.8bi) file shows. This was created on 18 March 2013 and modified on 3 December 2013.
If I go to C:\Program Files(x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CC\File Formats\ another (Camera Raw.8bi) file appears, created and modified same date and time as the first one.
Is this making any sense ? Thanks for your help.
It appears Bridge is using CR 8.2, the question is why and how do I persuade it to preference CR 8.3
By the way, I failed to mention it previously CR is converting and editing the NRW files normally, I just can't see their thumbnails in Bridge.

  • Adobe DNG files not supported in Aperture 3.1.2?

Those of you that follow this forum may have read my previous post - https://discussions.apple.com/message/15009745#15009745 - about RAW files from my old Windows machine whice look fine in iPhoto, but when I imported my iPhoto library into Aperture 3 they have this red haze over them like a flash coloured gel.
As I said, the older files came from my old Windows machine, where they had been stored in Photoshop Elements, and in the past I had converted them from Canon's .CRW file format to Adobe's .DNG format. I've just checked in Aperture, and it is indeed only these which are washed out - all of the Canon .CRW files look fine, it's the Adobe .DNG files which are a mess. I'll hazard a guess that Aperture doesn't support the Adobe .DNG format I have and that is the issue, but why they are supported in iPhoto and no the professional app I can't imagine. A call to Apple tomorrow morning is in order to sort this one out I think unless any of this excellent forum's followers can offer help. Has anyone had a similar experience importing .DNG files into Aperture 3? I should add that they bad either form the original import from iPhoto, or directly importing into Aperture.
    Thanks James.

Hi Bob, here's a quote from the link Stephen provided:
"Adobe Camera RAW converted DNGs won’t work because the fine print of Apple’s DNG support shows that it only works with unconverted DNGs—and the new lensdata support of Adobe’s DNG specification generates converted DNGs. While, Adobe may disagree with me (and there is a good reason why they should), this is just the sort of moving-target that causes me to argue against converting to Adobe DNGs."
As I said in the post this provides some useful background information, but I can't imagine that iPhoto uses a better DNG converter than Aperture (although perhaps older, so maybe that's why I can see the files okay in iPhto and not Aperture?). As for my OS, it's the latest version, I've done two software update checks this week so would for sure have run that when it came around, but I appreciate yours and others thinking on this problem of mine.

The next step for you to do is find another web hosting company. One that support PHP, on an Apache webserver. Since you are using the PHP lanuage for development, Apache is a good choice.
You need to make sure that you define your site correctly in Dreamweaver once you have a new hosting company. Then you can use Dreamweaver for your FTP functions, it works well for this. Save a simple file as index.html and "put" it to your webserver and try to view it with your browser.
Back to your original post above. It is nearly impossible for anyone to help with your question when you don't have a hosting company  for your website.
    Jim
Edited: website is still there, it looks like your default document type is not set, or you not allowed to use PHP (contact the hosting company).. Save a simple html file as index.html and see if you can see it.

  • What causes RAW DNG files not to open in PSE 7?

I installed converter 5.5 but I still cannot get PSE to open DNG file.  The error message is "could not complete the request . . file not a valid photoshop document".  The error message is the same as I got before I installed 5.5 but the converter symbol is adjacent to the DNG photo file so perhaps that install worked if it didn't work before.  I have no problem in opening or re-opening the file in the raw processing software.  The manual says I should be able it open processed files (DNG) in PSE editor.  Where did I go wrong?
    Thank you

Right, this is the Adobe community....

You are correct in that ACR 6.4 or later is required to read the Nikon D5100 raw files.
The last ACR that PSE 7 supports is ACR 5.5.
That is what I was afraid of.

Adobe does provide the free DNG converter for those who wish to continue to use old versions when they upgrade their camera. Some people actually prefer to do the conversion even if the camera is supported by the version of PSE that they have.
Unfortunately the Adobe DNG throws a message to the effect of "File was unable to be written" on every file, without any further explanation.

  • Dng files not working after opening it once

I have a Parrot Bebop drone and took photos in the DNG format. I can open the DNG images only once. It opens in Photoshop RAW, I change some settings and crop the image. Once I press the "Done" button, I can no longer open the DNG file and Photoshop just says the file format is not supported!?!?!?

If you can give us the Camera model, DNG converter version Camera Raw version and other information, it will help us chase it down.
As a starter, be sure Photoshop and Camera Raw are updated.
Also look at the list below:
    Adobe product and version number
    Operating system and version number
The full text of any error message(s)
What you were doing when the problem occurred
    Screenshots of the problem

  • CS cannot open Leica M8 DNG files

    Photoshop CS 8.0.1.
    Converter 4_3_1
After running the DNG Converter CS cannot open the DNG- files.
I'm getting an error message that says:
"Cannot open.......because it is the wrong type of file?"
Who knows the solution of my problem.
    Kees (from Holland)

My Camera Raw version is 2.0. and that was the cause.
After downloading and installing Version 2.4 the problem had been solved.
And indeed, the DND converter is unnecessary.
Jeff en PEC, thank you warmly for your suggestions.
Now I am a happy Photoshopper.

  • File not found in my media player but yes it's fou...

Yup so, I got my Nokia C6 phone about two months ago, and everything has been working perfectly until these past weeks.
When I connect my phone with the USB-cabel to my PC, everything is still working alright. Then I go to Windows Media Player, and it recognizes my phone correctly. Although, When I press Synchronize, it seems like everything is going on well but then I disconnect my phone from the computer and the files are not found in my media player, just in my File manager! Is there any chance to fix this because it really bothers me?
