Lemon 20" iMac? Need Help

Hello,
We have had a first gen iMac since Feb of this year. It was flawless until August. Since then the Logic board was replaced because the fans wouldn't spool up enough to keep it cool. When we received it back the wireless reception sucked until a undate now it ***** again. The unit has never went to sleep on it's own since the LB replacement. A week and a half ago it started a random shutdown, Apple replaced the power supply last week and tonight it shut down twice again.
Is this thing a lemon?
We have converted the whole household over to Mac. This iMac, my Macbook, the kids 12" iBook, with two iPods. To date my MB has seen service for heatsink sensor and the above frustration with the iMac.
Are we asking to much to has something we paid that much for just work. Do you think Apple will exchange this unit or allow us to pay the difference to go up to a 24"?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Hi KamikazeKunze, first of all, you should post this in the iMac G5 Discussion since you mentioned it is a "first gen iMac", I am going to assume that... unless it is not, and you meant the 1st series Intel iMac, which uses the Core Duo chip.
Okay, nevertheless, I share your sentiments and normally under this kind of circumstances where you have numerous repairs in and out of the tech service centre that made you loose confidence and perhaps even frustrated with the product.
But you have to relax, chill and think that, this is just a computer, and generally, Apple make good Macs, it is just probably your slightly "bad luck" that you have to go through this...
I am not sure about U.S. and/or Denver's product warranty or customers' rights, whether you bought the mac directly from an Apple Store or a "3rd party" Apple Reseller... like Amazon for example.
What I would encourage you, but require your lengthy talk with the store manager or someone who has the authority, looking at what you have been through, that perhaps they can give you an exchange of a new Mac, or even what you wish for, an upgrade.
Good luck and cheers

  • Some DVDs not playing in my iMac, need help!

some orginial / genuine DVDs not playing in my iMac, need help!

Once your husband copied the movies, did he use a burn software to burn them to a DVD? You need to use a burn software to properly encode the footage so it'll play in any DVD player/computer/TV. So, once the movie is copied to your hard drive, you can edit it in iMovie (may need a converter first to get it into a format iMovie can work with such as MPEG Streamclip); after you're done in iMovie, use iDVD if you have it or Roxio Toast to burn it to a DVD.
And for the OP: Regions are different depending on where the movie was made: the US, Europe, etc. The regions are set within DVD player  - you insert a DVD and the player reads what region it originated in. Please note you can only change regions 5 x; after the 5th, that setting will remain and can't be changed again.

  • Getting new iMac, need help transferring iPhone,

Okay, I've been using my iPhone with my main PC since I've had it. A few months ago, I started having problems with it (my PC), and it became very unstable. I haven't synced my iPhone in 3-4 months. Mainly because it was so unstable...most of the time, it wouldn't even boot into Windows. In the meantime, I've just been using my PowerBook, and Aspire One for all my computer needs.
So I ordered one of the new iMac 24's last week to replace my PC, and it will be here tomorrow. Today, I've been backing up my PC, with an external HDD, in Safe Mode. Since that's the only way I can get into Windows now. I've copied over all the folders I used for my iPhone...like for photos, custom ringtones, etc. And copied over the iTunes folder. But unfortunately, I cannot sync the iPhone in Safe Mode. So all the stuff in the iTunes folder is at least 3-4 months old. And I've bought music and apps from iTunes on the phone since then, as well as added contacts, taken pics, etc.
My question is, when I sync up the iPhone on my new iMac...will I lose everything that's been added to the iPhone since the last time I did a sync? Is there anyway to get it transferred? Or at least get my purchased music/apps from the iPhone to iTunes on the new machine? I can email the pics I've taken, and copy down the added contacts if need be...my main concern is the music/apps I've purchased on the iPhone.
Thanks for any help you can provide...and hopefully I didn't make that too confusing.

iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content from an iPod or iPhone that was purchased from the iTunes store, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased from the iTunes store only.
First you need to authorize your new Mac with your iTunes account with iTunes.
After doing so, with your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
Before syncing contact info with the Address Book and calendar events with iCal on your new Mac, enter one contact in the Address Book and one calendar event in iCal on your new Mac. Make these up if needed, which can be deleted later. This will provide a merge prompt when syncing contact info and calendar events with the Address Book and iCal on your new Mac, which you want to select.
Photos captured by your iPhone are not included with the iTunes sync process, except for being included with your iPhone's backup, which is the first step during the sync process. If you will be using iPhoto for storing photos on your new Mac, you can use iPhoto for importing these photos from your iPhone. Any photos transferred to your iPhone from your PC via the iTunes sync process must be transferred from your PC to your new Mac into iPhoto.
If all 3rd party apps available on your iPhone are not transferred to your iTunes library on your new Mac, you can re-download the apps with iTunes on your new Mac. You will not be charged again for any purchased apps as long as you use the same iTunes account to re-download the apps that was used to purchase the apps originally.

  • IMac needs help

Ok I have this iMac that was given to me and i turn it on and everything but I don't know the password so I can't use it and I've tried command S and command R they both do not work please someone help me anyone. Please I need a hero.

Okay, that's great - for best performance, I'd suggest wiping and reinstalling as you'll get a clean fresh copy of the OS and can set it up with your own name/password.
insert disk 1 and choose Restart from the file menu while holding down the C key. Once booted into the installer, go past the language selection, and then choose Disk Utility in the File menu. Choose to erase your disk. When finished, quit Disk utility and install the OS. Insert disk 2 when asked for it. When it's all finished, hit Software Update in the File menu under the Apple and it'll update whatever is needed.

  • Computer hard drive crashed on our iMAC need help

Hi we just put in a new hard drive because our hard drive died.
We cant remember how to reset the imac to stop it from booting to windows vista partition so that we could restore the mac os cd to the hard drive.
We cant remember teh four key combinations we have to hold down to reset the computer to boot up so that we could choose either the windows or the mac os hard drive.
But since we instaled a new hard drive the computer keeps seeking the old windows partition and wont give us the option of holding down the option key to choose which partitioin to boot.
Does anyone have experience in installing mac os on a new hard drive that already has linux boot loader in it?
our imac keeps booting up with the linux boot loader and we cant install the mac os back this way.
pleaes help urgent thanks in advance.

Well, you really can't. Linux has control of the drive. You need to first prep this drive as follows:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Upon completion you can restore your backup of OS X to the drive. When you finally boot OS X on the drive, you can then use Boot Camp Assistant to create your Windows partition.
If you aren't doing things this way then you need to use the procedures you followed in the past for creating a triple-boot system.

I'm trying to connect my 23" Cinema Display monitor to my iMac. The adaptor cable I ordered came with a female, I need a male adaptor. Any ideas where I might find one? I purchased the BlueRigger Mini Displayport Male to DVI Female Adapter Cable.

I have the 23" aluminum Cinema Display. I just can't seem to find the right adaptor for the monitor femal plug on the backside. I've tried a Bluerigger but it was a female adaptor. I believe I need a male.

  • Trying to update an old 2002 iMac - need help!

I'm trying to update my ancient iMac to a newer operating system. I was hoping I could simply download my purchased copy of Mountain Lion onto this machine, but to my knowledge I cannot access the Mac App Store on this machine. Can someone give me a nudge in the right direction of how I should go about this? Thanks!

I'm sorry, but your Mac is way too old to update to Mountain Lion. Look here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5444
Mavericks was released yesterday and Mountain Lion is no longer available in the MAS. You need to be running OSX 10.6.8 in order to have the MAS on your Mac in the first place.
Maybe you should think about investing in a new Mac - or maybe a refurb, if you can't afford a new one, or settle for the OS that you are running now. As far as I know, you cannot buy Tiger which might be the next step up for your machine.

  • Big problems with IMac-need help

I have an older model iMac G5 that my daughter has been using on week-ends when she comes home from the local college. She said that she was having a lot of problems with Safari quitting, getting weird messages with MS Office and kernel panics. I decided that the best thing to do would be to erase and install Leopard. During the installation process I got a message that Leopard could not install due to a problem with the base system. I then tried to install from the restore discs (which were backups that I had on hand since I couldn't find the originals) and from a Tiger install disc. I got errors each time. Now there was no longer an operating system on the iMac. I took it to the local genius bar. The genius seemed kind of frazzled since he was helping several people, but he seemed sure that it was the hard drive because of the kernel panics and the fact that he couldn't install anything onto the computer from an external firewire drive.
I purchased a new hard drive from Amazon and a friend who is very knowledgeable about these things installed it for me. We still couldn't install an operating system. We then installed it using Target Mode by putting the Tiger DVD on a Powerbook. I then proceeded with Software Update. I had no problems with applications like iTunes and DVD player. However, whenever I tried to upgrade the operating system I got this message "The digital signature for this package is incorrect. The package may have been tampered with or corrupted since being signed by "Apple". I used Disc Utility with the Tiger DVD and it showed no problems.
So, there is obviously something really wrong. I have no idea what it is. Any ideas out there? Should I take the iMac back to the genius bar? I don't want to spend a lot more money on it, since it is just used on week-ends when my daughter is home. Thanks.

It could be any of those things, but likely is the motherboard. Take it in and have Apple look at it.
Let us know what they say, please.

  • My imac needs help

we go this imac from my finace aunt and she didnt give us the cd for it..i need to reboot/factory reset on this computer how can i do it without the cd
    thanks

The first thing you should do after acquiring a used computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the gray installation discs that came with it. If you don't have the discs, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, it should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.

  • My 1st iMac, need help with the upgrade to Leopard CPU Drop-In DVD

Hello all, my 1st post as a new Apple switcher!
I just received my new iMac 24" today, and I am not sure about the upgrade to Leopard. (Came pre-installed with Tiger, and came with a Leopard CPU Drop-In DVD). I have read about a few issues with the upgrade / re-install process to Leopard, stemming from the rumor that the Leopard CPU Drop-In DVD is not a full version, but an upgrade only.
First of all, obviously I am supposed to put in the "Drop-In DVD" and let it rip, but there are several options to pick from. One of them is upgrade, and another is to erase the hard drive and perform a clean install.
    My questions are:
If I perform the erase and install, I have heard that iLife 08 will not be installed. If so, where / how do I reinstall that and any other apps that are left out?
Secondly, in the future, if I need to re-install again, will this "Drop-In DVD" work because Tiger has been removed from the hard drive? Will I just pop in my Tiger disks like the old Windows stuff required?
I plan on just doing the upgrade, but I would like to know what to do in the future if I have to do an erase / install.
Thank you, and the iMac 24" is gorgeous!

Hey, I know what you mean.
I upgraded to Leopard after buying my first mac with Tiger.
I rang customer service and asked how do I install iLife 08 if I do a clean instal,l as when i upgraded my Safari would not play flash, quicktime or open certain websites. Also I had a very long load up period with Blue Screen which bothered me a lot. (I know I am fussy)
Anyway my brother suggested I use Pacifist to get the .pkg files from the Tiger boot disk. He took control of my machine as he has Leopard and did this for me remotely as I am not a wizard like him.
By the way that is a great feature of Leopard.
Anyway this worked for me, only iMovie would not start properly but when I download the updates to iLife 08 they all work perfectly now. Saved my 79 euro as well instead of having to buy again as I think iLife should be supplied on a separate disk, (bad form apple) as they know for many a clean install is likely if they experience serious issues upgrading.
Anyway pacifist http://www.charlessoft.com/ is worth a try if you can't afford to fork out for iLife again like me.
Just make sure you select all the iLife .pkg files and composer files. when it installs if the files are already there just click leave alone and it will install only what it needs. Then run the updates if you have any issues opening any of the programs such as imovie and this should replace any missing files.
I have open and run all the iLife programs and so far so good.

  • New Hard Drive on old iMac - need help getting Admin rights

My iMac hard drive finally crashed & I had to get a new one. The Apple Store did great at saving my files & programs, but I didn't know there had been a password set up originally (more than one person used this computer) and now I can't use some of my software already installed.  It also won't allow me to re-install it, without a password.
How do I change my Administrator Password in order to enable me to install new photo software?  The system won't allow me to use some of my own programs at this point.  I have OS X Lion and the Support information claims I can go to Users & Groups and just click on my Apple ID somehow, but I can't get it unlocked to begin with.  What do I do??

    al22,
You have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. If your machine is within the 90 days or you have already bought AppleCare (STRONGLY recommended) give them a call. The support is excellent, nothing like what you are used to with a PC.
Because you did not complete your profile we have no idea where you are located, what machine you have or the version of OS X installed. Please complete your profile, you can find it under Your Stuff in the upper right.

  • IMac - Need help deciding.

    Hello Forumers.
Bit of a dilema here, I was so chuffed to see the new iMacs untill I realised they dont support "Target input" from PS3 or TV etc ..
Well correction they do but only through Thunderbolt, which there is no adapter that allows this connectivity to happen. (Yet??).
The reason I wanted an iMac was simply to get rid of my windows pc and monitor and my HDTV and have an iMac that would allow me to do everything as I dont have mass's of space in my room.
Should I wait and see what adapters appear? Do I grab the old iMac now its surely down in price?...
Also I hear the 2010 version iMac 21.5 inchers lagg alot more when using an input device with them from a PS3 than the 27 sized 2010 iMacs.
    Your thoughts please.
    Thanks.

    1) It is probably a lot better than the x1600 even though it shares the system RAM.
    2) No it mostly uses the CPU for crunching.
    3) This is normal and does not necessarily have to do with it being integrated graphics. It has to do with the it being in such a small space with little air movement. The older white iMacs run cooler than the newer Aluminum iMacs in general. It has nothing to do with the graphics processor and everything to do with the overall design. Most of the ALU iMacs I have used stay very quiet even when they are running hot.

  • 2008 iMac needs help

My older iMac (2008 vintage) operates very slowly; the busy wheel icon flashes on with nearly every application shift.  Is there a a remedial process recommended for 'cleaning up' the system so that it all works as well as my newer (2013) iMac?

    Thank you much Paul_31!
As for RAM, the original 8mb, there is no AV software and no vitamins!!!  When attempting to install an update of the OS X from 10.8.5 to 10.9.1, the system indicated a failure with a note that the HD was incapable, and noted it was damaged and incapable of repair.  After your suggestion (Command + r) I tried to repair it using the Disk Utility.  'Verify' in Disk Utility suggested the HD was OK.  It suggested backup and reformatting.  I'm not sure about how best to reformat HD (or the partition).  I do have a recent external backup to use.  I erased the HD but not the partition.  I shall connect (hardwire) to network (via 1 TB Time Capsule) and try another OS X 10.9.1 download and installation.
Your recent and future thoughts on my housekeeping efforts are appreciated. I am something of a danger to myself inasmuch as I am armed with only "a little knowledge" which is, historically, a dangerous thing!
This iMac is a veteran that belongs on the desk of another owner.  What should I do to extinguish my infomation and history on this iMac and to make it ready for use elsewhere?  While waiting for housekeeping tips from you out there in Apple Land, I shall find the box it came in and do my best to prepare it for its journey to the next owner.

  • Need help broadcasting A/V from iMac to TV

Sup Apple! PC here, don't hold it against meh!
My sister has an  iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010) w/ the i5. She wants to mirror her pc to her TV but there are considerations. I need help finding the best wireless solution.
    Here are the facts:
    No HDMI port on iMac
Has HughesNet satellite as her ISP
    Wifi speeds vary with cloudcover
The machine is 30 ft away not direct line of sight
I've looked at Apple TV, and AirPlay only ccovers 2011 models and up.
So assuming I run a mini displayport to HDMI converter from Mac to a Transmitter...I'll get pic only, how do you think the best way is to stream audio and video to the TV? I'm not familiar with FireWire 800, and I see the Optical Out, but for now I have her ordering something that will get Pic only, as she needs to showcase photography.
There's gotta be a device I am unaware of that will handle both audio and video... with the HughesNet consideration, is it even worth it?
This is what transmitter/receiver I'm looking at, http://www.nyrius.com/products/display.php?id=123&i=3
Any better ideas? Am I missing anything elusively obvious here?
    Thanks in advance ,

I've read that Airparrot works well with Apple TV for macs that don't support mirroring. http://www.airsquirrels.com/airparrot/
