Length of a Movie in iMovie'11

I'm wondering if anyone knows the largest length of a movie you can make with iMovie'11. I'm putting together a wedding video for a friend, and I can't get it to fit on a disk. Right now I'm using the "Large" size. Does anyone know? What about for Medium?

I have a related question. I am exporting my home movies to iTunes (large size). Recently I tried to create one that was over two hours in length. After rendering it for several hours, iMovie gave me a message that it was too large. Is there a size limit, in either iMovie or iTunes, to which I must adhere? If so, what is it? Please note: I am not trying to create a DVD in this process (I know the limits for that). Thanks!

I made a duplicate copy of an imovie HD project and when I updated the titles on the copy, the video stuttered . I'm using Snow Leopard OSX. The length of the movie increased unexpedtedly too.

I made a duplicate of an imovie HD project so I could have two different versions. I tried making the copies both by using File> Duplicate and the Save As command in imovie.
When I changed the title on the copy, the video stuttered when I played it back. Also the overall length of the movie increased by about 6 seconds throwing off some sync even though the replacement title was exactly the same length in seconds and frames as the one I replaced.
any thoughts how to fix this?
I'm using OSX 10.6.8.

When I connect the Smart Disk FireLite to my MacBook Pro via USB, open iMovie '09, and select View
Events By Disk or rather "Group Events By Disk," an icon for the FireLite external drive appears, but there is a yellow triangle with a black exclamation mark on the icon for the external drive. What does this "warning" mean? There are MP3s of music on the same external drive and they open just fine in iTunes. The one iMovie project file that is already on the drive will not open up in iMovie.
So, how do I properly format this external drive in order to transfer an iMovie project file from my friend's computer so that I can edit it on my MacBook Pro using iMovie '09?

Quicktime movie into iMovie

How can I convert a quicktime movie into iMovie or somewhere I can burn it? I have lost my iMovie footage, but had saved it a couple years ago as a quicktime movie. I need to make my quicktime movie into a DVD.

You might find that Toast 6 (well now 7 but I use 6) is a good choice - I find at times when it chokes on MPEG-1 files, I convert them to QT using a lossless codec and then use the QT files to author a DVD. Great results.
I have even found that QT movies using the 3ivX codec or Sorenson , 1/2 hour in length yet only 500-600 MB turn out to look amazingly good in DVD format through Toast. Even though the comparable amount of DV or MPEG-2 as a source woudl be many times larger, so the QT codecs, the good ones do OK when transcoding.
So assuming your source is a decent codec it should look OK - author a disk image first then mount it and see how it plays and looks in the DVD player. Saves a DVD blank and some time initially.

I just finished creating a movie in IMovie and now want to burn it to a DVD and make it loop. Since I just purchased this IMac it no longer comes with IDVD. My question is how to burn and loop a dvd without IDVD. Thanks for any help.

There is free open source software called Burn that will burn DVDs. Here is a link.
If you wish to pay for software, there are many, including TOAST TITANIUM from Roxio. Apple's retail copy of iLife 11, and Apple's Compressor.
Of these, I would say that iDVD is known for being able to create very professional looking DVDs with intros, menus, lots of interesting templates.
Toast is much simpler and the menus and templates are more plain.
Compressor is a professional tool that does a lot more than make DVDs. Don't expect much in the way of menus or templates.
Burn, I have never tried, since I have iDVD and Toast for those ocasions when I need to burn a DVD. However, since it is free, I think it is worth a try.
Each software package is a little different, but in general, in iMovie, you can use the SHARE menu to SHARE/MOVIE in Large size. Save the movie to your desktop or someplace you can easily find it. Then drag it into the tool of your choice. You can alsouse SHARE/MEDIA BROWSER/LARGE if you have iDVD or Toast.

Why is it that when I put my movie from iMovie on the desktop it gets shaky?

I made a movie on iMovie that is clear and not shaky. However, when I try to download the movie to the desktop, the whole movie is shaky. It is shaky when downloading with QuickTime and when I try to "Export Movie." I use iMovie '09, version 8.0.6. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can prevent it? I have been happily using iMovie and iDVD from versions 1 through 6. iMovie 08 was so bad that Apple made iMovie 06 available as a free download for buyers of iMovie 08. The newer iMovies were better, but they seemed “dumbed down” (even for me). Now, I am shocked and horrified to learn that the latest iMovie does not even set chapter markers!
So, I have continued to use iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 (they seem to work fine under OS 10.9.4).   iMovie 06 is now 8 years old! I feel compelled to move forward. A lot of my work is DV.    In the past, most of my source material came out of S-Video.   I used a Canopus ADVC300 analog-to-digital converter that gave good results.   Going forward, I will have more video utilizing Component Video, or HDMI.
I am looking into 2 possibilities, Adobe Premiere elements 12, or.........Final Cut Pro X.
The final result of my work is almost always a DVD.   It is hard for me to move from iMovie and iDVD. I never read the manuals for either program, yet, I was able to produce DVDs with nice menus and overall quality close to Hollywood.
It looks like Final Cut Pro X 'can' make a DVD directly without other software. However, from what I have seen on YouTube the result is primitive compared to what iDVD was doing 10 years ago.
Adobe Premiere elements 12 can make nice DVDs and Blu-ray's directly. I have no problem with using a separate program to make DVDs but I haven't got a clue how to do that with Final Cut Pro X.   I suppose I can still use iDVD, but now I'm back to using discontinued software.
I do not need any of the high-powered affects capability that Final Cut Pro X possesses. My “movie-making” is mostly confined to simple editing (the old iMovie 06 did all I needed).
Frankly, one motivation for choosing Final Cut Pro X, is the excellent, compassionate and understanding support that the kind people on this very forum provide. So, what program should I use?

Why do you want to switch to a new editor anyhow?
• iM-a never did discs - that was iDVDs job = no big change in your workflow
• iDVD is still working, and aside obsolete, complex and $$$$ DVDSP (part of obsolete FC/p) or Encore (part of Adobes CC rent package) your only option left to create disks on MacOS is indeed iDVD (...ok, there's Toast and Burn and some weird 'shareware'-stuff...)..
• iMovie-b supports the new HDef formats (AVCHD) - you mentioned converters and DVDs = no HDef in use, in your habitat, correct?
• if you don't need FCPX' bling-bling (I can't imagine that ) - why not using FCPX-lite = iMovie? 15$ ...
• chapters could be done in iDVD - just to mention that ............
• AP and FCPX are following very different concepts in usage - my personal preference is 200% on FCPX, … I was one of the loudest nay-sayers, when iM08 araised, meanwhile, FCPX is my dream!! I don't have idvd but i need to burn my movie from iMovie! what do i do? i have dvds but every time i try to use one, the sound is off and it doesn't work on quick time or adobe... help!!

There are two structures of DVDs
• Data-DVD - as burned from DeskTop/Finder
• Video-DVD - to be played on a DVD-Player - Needs a program that can do this
One can in iMovie - Export as QuickTime .mov and save this via DeskTop/Finder onto a DVD - BUT this will only play on a Computer and if it is a Window-PC this needs to download QT-player or VLC-player.
But no DVD-player for TV can play back this.
To get a Video-DVD then You need
• iDVD (not from Apple any more) - or -
• DVD Studio Pro (not from Apple any more) - or -
• FinalCut Pro-X (can do simple Video-DVDs) - or -
• Burn - http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html - FREE - but very PLAIN - no fancy things at all.
• Roxio Toast™ 11 Pro - Fairly advanced - and costs a bit - still very Good and lot's of great tool's included. (I love it) - Can also back convert home made DVDs to an editable mode in an OK quality. With BD-component also capable to do sort of Blu-Ray DVDs.

Another easy way to fix this.
What I've noticed is that upon upgrading your projects and events to work with iMovie 10, initially it will work... Until you quit iMovie and reopen it again. Any events with hashtags will show up without the star next to the iMovie event. SO, if you happen to read this, after upgrading to iMovie 10 from its predecessor, immediately change the event name to NOT include a hashtag/pound symbol.
Otherwise, if it's too late, you can either do the above or this...
Hold down option and click on iMovie. This will prompt you Locate, Create a New Library, Cancel this window, or Choose a different library. What you want to do is create a new library, call it whatever you want to, this will only be temporary. After the program opens, it should be a blank Library. Then go to File > Open Library > iMovie Library (your original library) and proceed to change the name of your events. Quit the program. Go into your Movies folder in Finder, delete the library you temporarily created, and your back in business.

Depending on the size of your movie, you may simply export it to your desktop then transfer it to an external drive such as a USB or SD. Once fully transfered, insert the external drive into your Mac Book Pro and transfer over. You may then import it into iMovie.

To make sure that all required media is in the library contain the project you need to "Consolidate media" see: http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov882dee351
You can then copy the library to your laptop with the Finder and open it with the same version of iMovie. The last phrase is important since Apple has made changes in the project format several times even between minor updates of iMovie 10. Earlier versions may not be able to read the library and later versions (not possible in this case) may cause the project to be updated so that it is no longer readable by the desktop version. iMovie on the laptop will not at first find the copied library - you will have either to double click on it or File - Open library - Other and navigate to its location.

No unfortunately it won't open in quicktime either. It does the same thing that Imovie does, separates it into two file folders audio and video, and if i select video it opens to reveal 8 files that cannot be selected. VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VB, VTS_01_3.VOB. All of which cannot be opened or selected.
Opening it in Idvd and folllowing your suggestion works and I get a format code of NTSC. Is that the same? Thank you for your time and response.

I would not recommend that you move iMovie files to the Time Capsule. You will not get sufficient performance for editing. For this reason, iMovie does not show the Time Capsule as an attached drive within iMovie.
If you move these files using the Finder, you will likely make the projects unusable, because the links between the projects and events will be broken.
Use a locally attached external hard drive tha is formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled).
See this User Tip for how to move the Events and Projects to a locally attached drive. (By locally attached, I mean a drive that is attached to your Mac via USB, Firewire, or Thunderbolt cables.)

I did that too, then I did a migration assistant to a new Mac and ALL of my movies have Source Clip Missing now, even though the original clips are still in the iPhoto Videos. I can stand to re edit one or two projects, but not ALL.

OK Error code - 2125 usually indicates that the movie is to large.
It use to pop up when going to iDVD !
iDVD - DO NOT CARE ABOUT Gbs at all. I got movies on 500Mb that do not fit and 50Gb that fits nicely.
iDVD - ONLY CARES ABOUT - Duration. Duration is Movie time + MENU TIME. Choice of
menu and animation of this can take lost of "DURATION" 15 minutes or even more.
Choice of encoding method and use of SL or DL DVDs determine the DVD limit.
iDVD 08 & 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
• Professional Quality (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST
• Best Performances (movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
• High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
DL DVDs can store about double of these times.
ALTERNATIVE - The Error Code can indicate that free space on Start-up (BOOT) hard disk is
less than 25Gb (my minimum)

If you are getting OSStatus error -2125, I've seen this caused by the computer display sleep settings.
Try changing the sleep settings to never and see if you are able to export.
