Length of Material Description

MM Experts,
is there a way to increase the size of Material Description (now its 40 characters) in material master ?

If you change any standard feature in SAP ex: Material Code Length, Material description Length etc...
SAP AG will not support at Free of Cost, either they will refuse to support or Charge very high..
So it is better to adjust with the Standard settings/features..
in your case Define a New Item text as Material Description and use the same in the Purchasing output documents..

but retriving that will be difficult
it is to be done by ur abaper using the functional module read_text with help of tables STXH and STXL are used to store long text in SAP.
now plz consult ur abaper for this

You can Use additional data Basic Data Text or Purchase Order Text.
Long Texts are Stored in STXH & STXL Tables and the Same can be Retrieved thru FM READ_TEXT in SE37. Communicate your abaper Once......

i have a problem and it is that when we create a material we provide its description whose length is of 40 characters.
suppose we want to provide the description of material of more then 40 characters (suppose 60 characters), how can we do that?

I don't think it is possible to increase the length of MAKTX more than 40 char.
What for he needs.
If he needs to enter some extra text let him use the Material LONG texts which are available in MM01 etc. (which we can fetch afterwards using READ_TEXT fun module and use )
generally when the lient needs to enter some extra data which is of more length we advise them to do like that.
If the client still insists in the material master of MM01 in SPRO You can try by increasing it.
Because there is no screen exits for MM01.

Long material description in PI-sheet (XSteps)

Hello,
I have read somewhere one can have long material descriptions in PI-sheet.
I am not able to find this information as the solution wa described there as well.
PPPI_MATERIAL_SHORT_TEXT as I am using now does not give full length.
Please advice!

Characters in material description

Where I can check how many characters are allowed for material description in material master ?

the material master description allow 40 characters.
in MM01 or MM02 you can count them or
take the field name, in se11 check for the fields info and check for data element and its length.

R/3 Material description not replicating in SRM CC-Hubwoo

In SRM, use Transaction SM30
Go to Table - COMCHIERARCHY_
Amend the setting so that the following is checked:
Transfer 60 Character Description
This will now ensure that the 60 character material group description is replicated to SRM.
The OSS note (455949) SAP has given us long back works around CRM customizing path.
*To access it in SRM use SM30 on COMCHIERARCHY to use long description instead of short one.*_
Use
In R/3 system - T023T has short description (20 char) and long description ( 60 char ).
The description in SRM COMM_CATEGORYT has 80 char length.

How to enter customer specific material description

Tried MM02 - basic data for Language EN, but then all customers with language EN get this description.
Tried MM02 - Sales Text but then all customers created in this salesorganization get this description.
Would like to enter customer specific material description. Unfortunately VD52 is limited to 35 characters, need about 80 characters.

I noticed I needed to use the button addtional text as well in VD52, though this is limited to 72 characters and not unlimited. Now I'm facing the issue that the commercial invoice is not printing all characters defined in this field, so probably have the layout increase field length.

Hi,
For a single material code maintaining multiple text in the same language is not possible,
this contradicts the basic principle of consistancy.
Howevery you are free to do R&D, if sucessful please let me know.

Material description is not showing in VL10H

Hi All,
I am running the report VL10H and facing a problem, step which is being followed by me, given below:-
1.Put plant and delivery date and execute.
2.click on label Edit -> Show/hide delivery.
3.Chose the field u201CMaterial descriptionu201D from Layout for output field.
Now here I am seeing that all the materials in this report, having SD Doc i.e. delivery has been created,
Material description is showing and remaining materials which have no delivery (showing in green color),
Material description is not being shown.
Can anybody suggest me regarding this?

I do not have any items shown which have already deliveries created
About which description are you talking, as I can see 2, one at item level and another one at header level ?

Material description VS Purchase order Text when creating a PO

Hi Gurus,
When creating a PO for a specific material, I have to print a purchase order text different from the material description.
To do this, a specific text has be added to the material master data in the tab "Purchase order Text" with the italian language maintained.
But, when i start to create a new PO for this material, the short text that is shown is retrieved form the Material description and not from the Purchase order text that has been added before.
How can I do to have the purchase order text shown in the PO instead of the common material description?

1) Could you please confirm me that this is the functionality of the standard SAP System? That means that in case we want to put the purchase order text in to "short text" we would need to create an ad hoc development, right?
2) In case we print the PO with the purchase order text added for the material, is there any point where we can find this information for the material, or we will see just the material description from the Material Master Data?

I'm working on scripts.
the material description field is been passed from my driver program ..into the script..
Ex: &gs_final-maktx& ..
There r a number of other fields to be displayed ...after this field ....
Is there any option to split the 'Material description into two lines'?
Ex: at present it is :

I mean that there a number of field berfore and after this field......in the same line
I need to jst split the materia description ...& make it to appear in two lines.....!!

How to prevent error message for material description in MDG material detail screen, when user click on check action

Dear Experts,
I have a requirement for making material description as non mandetory in change request view of mdg material screen.
I have done that using field usage in get data method of feeder classes, but still message is displaying.
This message 'Material description is mandatory is displaying with check action only, but not with save or submit after i anhance field property as not mandetory.
How to prevent error message for material description in MDG material detail screen, when user click on check action.

Hello Sukumar
In IMG activity "Configure Properties of Change Request Step", you can completely deactivate the reuse area checks (but will then loose all other checks of the backend business logic as well).
You can also set the error severity of the checks from Error to Warning (per CR type, not per check).
Or you provide a default value for the material description, e.g. by implementing the BAdI USMD_RULE_SERVICE.

I don't think you can realize it, because in SAP system there are 6 influncing factors:
Material Type
Plant
Industry sector
Transaction
Procurement indicator
SAP Delivery
Field selection is controlled by field references. You can assign field references to the influencing factors material type, plant, and industry sector in Customizing. SAP maintains the assignment of the field reference to the transaction codes, to the procurement types, and for the SAP delivery. You cannot change this assignment of these field references in Customizing.
So from my point of view, you can't use the factors of material type, plant and industry sector to distinguish different users' authorization.
