Lenovo A820 : Rooting and Alternative ROMs

As some of you may know the quad-core Lenovo A820 can now be purchased for only £99 incl shipping.
However, phones sold direct from China are made for the Chinese market. That means no Google apps and
everything else in Chinese.
For use outside China, phone needs to be rooted and an international ROM installed.
Rooting has many other benefits but can be tricky for the uninitiated. I hope this thread dedicated to rooting only would be useful.
For starters, there is the "Rooting and installing a custom ROM on the Lenovo A820"
It is an excellent rooting tutorial by the site Mobile Network Comparison.
It includes videos and links for everything you need!

Please post your experiences with rooting and any advice here!

Had loaded s130 scatter and unable to get to Rooting Menu (blue font), it just flashes for 1/2 second and blackout itself.  tried repeatedly but to no avail. thereafter found a s139 image and it worked.
before rooting, if you check the version on your A820, mine read as S130 and was worried might brick device.
must have tried 20 times before gunning the s139  download. all working now.

  • Lenovo A820 Memory Shortage

Few days ago I bought a Lenovo A820 from etotalk.com in China.
I bought their 'Etotalk Mod ROM' service for $5.  The phone was unlocked, rooted, and they installed an international ROM, multi-language OS, Google Play Store, etc.  I was able to use it straight out of the box.
So far so good. Now the problem:
A820 is specified to have 1GB of RAM, 4GB of ROM.
But Antutu reports: Memory (ROM) 349.1/670.1 MB and RAM 502.2/976.3 MB.
Android Assistant app show:  ROM 670.14 MB  and RAM 976.28 MB
Did I get the phone that I ordered?!

    Hi
    There's no storage to unlock.
A part of the internal storage is exclusively reserved for the OS... That part will never show. That's how Android has always worked.
If you are referring to a repartition of the internal storage I would advice against it.

  • Compilation of Lenovo X120e issues and solutions

Just thought a compilation of issues may be beneficial for folks who own an X120e.
Screen adjusts brightness automatically without user input depending on content on screen:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X100e-screen-brightness-increasing-by-itself/td...
This is caused by Vari-Bright being enabled in the Catalyst Control Center.  With this option enabled, the screen will automatically adjust its brightness depending on what is shown on the screen.  The display brightness is increased when the screen is predominantly white while the display brightness is decreased when the screen is predominantly dark.  An easiest way to see this effect happening is to have two tabs opened in a web browser window.  Set one tab to display a website that is mainly filled with white pixels (such as this Lenovo Forum) and another tab to display a website that is mainly filled with dark pixels (such as http://www.krijtenberg.nl/ ).  Switch between the two, pausing a few seconds in each tab.
    Solution:
Open the Catalyst Control Center and select the PowerPlay option in the Power section.  Uncheck the Vari-Bright option (or adjust the slider) and click Apply.  Verify that the automatic adjustment is no longer occuring by doing the two tab experiment described above.
Function keys for brightness control not working after waking from sleep / hibernation in some instances:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/x120e-Funtion-keys-for-brightness-not-working/t...
For my X120e, whenever I have it sleeping or hibernating and change the power source (such as initiating sleep when on power and then waking it up while on battery, or vice versa), the function keys for brightness controls do not work.
    Solution:
Restarting the machine will bring back functionality of the brightness control keys...
A way to prevent this from happening in the first place is to wake the X120e in the same power state that the X120e was put to sleep in (wake up from power adapter if slept while connected to power adapter, or wake up from battery if slept while on battery).
All we can do now is wait for Lenovo to come up with a fix on their side of things.
AMD SATA Controller and TRIM for SSD:
The AMD SATA Controller provided by Lenovo does not support passing of TRIM command according to http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/450343-post35.html for SSDs.  The Lenovo provided AMD SATA Controller is 1.2.1.197, before the official TRIM support in 1.2.1.263.  If you're using a HDD, this is of no concern.
    Solution:
In order to have support for passing of TRIM command, one has to update the AMD SATA Controller to any version above 1.2.1.263 ( http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/integrated_win7-64.aspx#3 for Windows 7 64-bit, for example) or uninstall the AMD SATA Controller to revert back to Microsoft's Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller.
Disclaimer:  Since the AMD SATA Controller driver linked is not from Lenovo themselves, I'm sure they won't provide any support if something is to occur so try at your own risk.
As HP79 mentions below, at least according to the update notes, TRIM implementation is implemented for Hudson chipsets as of 1.2.001.263.
Audio Stutter / Slurring occuring during playback of video/audio:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/x120e-Stuttering-Audio/td-p/389023
This issue can be reproduced (at least on my X120e) by waking the X120e after putting it to sleep.  The symptom is the audio repeating a sound over a span of a second or two during playback and is quite noticable.
    Solution:
uEFI Bios version 1.11 seems to deal with the audio stuttering issue.  So far, results lead to positive outcomes.
    Old Solution:
PWMTR64V.DLL that is loaded at Startup seems to be causing this issue.  Disabling it from launching when starting up seems to cure the Audio Stutter (even after waking up from sleep which was seen to be a pretty reliable way to get the issue to repro).  Start Menu > Launch MSCONFIG from the Search Bar > Select Startup Tab from the System Configuration window > Uncheck Thinkpad Power Manager > Restart.
This does not seem to turn off the power manager application itself so settings in Power Manager can be saved and it seems to still be in effect.  However, opening up Power Manager from the notification / taskbar can cause audio stuttering and mouse movement slowdown while it is launching and/or when applying settings.  This is only temporary and is gone when Power Manager is closed. (Thanks kns7977 for the find)
Pending to see if those who uninstalled Power Manager are able to turn off the offending startup .dll.
Mouse seems to stutter or stay in place for a moment when moving:
This seems to be caused by the same issue causing the Audio Stutter / Slurring.  At least at this time, the cause of the issue and solution seems to be the same.
Emulating Middle Mouse Button with Trackpoint:
One can set up the middle button between the left and right click button for the TrackPoint to act like pressing a middle mouse button on a standard mouse by changing the scrolling type to Smooth instead of the default Standard.
Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Mouse > UltraNav Tab > Setting for TrackPoint > Setting for Choose Scrolling or Magnifying Glass Function > Smooth.
Trackpad's two finger gesture being hit or miss:
The trackpad's two finger scrolling is very hit and miss.
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X120e-Touchpad-issues/td-p/393751
Solution: Turning off Gesture Filtering may alleviate the problem.  As mentioned in http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo-ibm/561751-x120e-owners-thread-24.html#post7323293, it seems that the Gesture Filtering is counteracting any sort of two finger input.
Get to Mouse Properties by Fn + F8, select Manage Settings.  At Mouse Properties, select the UltraNav tab > Settings for TouchPad.  Expand the Smart Check Settings, highlight Gesture Filtering, and uncheck the Enable Gesture Filtering box and Apply.
    Screen flickers lines:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/x120e-Flickering/td-p/389523
Had this issue occur on me once, but never seen it happen again.  Unsure what caused or cured it.
    Solution:
If the flickering is occuring, a restart is all that is needed to alleviate the problem.  Haven't tested if hibernation fixes it, but neither sleep nor turning off the screen with the Power Manager dealt with the flickering.
3-Cell Battery mentioned as a 40Wh in the Order Page of Lenovo X120e when it is actually rated as 32Wh according to Power Manager:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X120e-3-cell-40Wh-battery-reported-as-32Wh-by-P...
    Yeah...
    Solution:
Accept that it's a 32Wh you will get when selecting 3-Cell or go for the 6-Cell if you want more than 32Wh.
2x2 ABGN Driver from Lenovo triggering Error Code 10:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/X120e-ABGN-Driver-issue-in-Windows-7-Pro-x64/td...
The Wireless driver from Lenovo's site seems to not work with the 2x2 ABGN wireless when installed on a fresh copy of Windows 7 x64.
    Solution:
Not really quite a solution, but one can bypass this by either installing the 32-bit Windows 7 and installing the 32-bit driver, or using the factory recovery disc to install 64 bit windows 7 to have it install drivers that work for x64 windows 7.
X120e bluescreens after installing LAN Realtek 7.26.902.2010 drivers from Lenovo's Driver download site.
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/x120e-bluescreen-when-installing-lan-drivers/td...
The drivers doesn't seem to work and it causes a bluescreen on fresh installed Windows 7 x64.
    Solution:
As Clicq suggests, Realtek's own drivers from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTy... seems to deal with the issue.
    Screen quality on the X120e:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/x120e-poor-LCD-quality-viewing-angles/td-p/3945...
The quality of the screen on an X120e is below expectations.
This is common with low-quality TN panels not helped by glossy displays.  My personal X120e screen likes to bleed certain colors of red.
    Solution (not really):
One can use the Windows 7 built-in color calibration tool to adjust the colors to make it more tolerable.  Adjusting your own viewing angle in relation to the screen might deal with some color issues (hard to figure out what's the correct viewing angle because of TN panel's small range of optimal viewing angles).  Also, changing the refresh rate to 60Hz may deal with some headaches due to the screen (as it did for me).
    HDMI Overscan to HDTV issue:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/HDMI-overscan-to-HDTV-issue-on-x120e/m-p/395335
There is a black border when outputting to HDTV through HDMI.
    Solution:
AMD's CCC by default sets a specific value for overscan / underscan.  One can http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Output-to-TV-via-HDMI-port-black-border-on-the-... while the device is connected via HDMI (the option is hidden if the HDMI port is not used) and adjust the slider to an acceptable value.
Skype asserts after 10-20 seconds of video chat:
    http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/x120e-Skype-quits-after-10-20-seconds-of-video/...
When doing a video chat, the video feed will freeze and then skype will crash to desktop.
    Solution:
Version 5.3 of Skype seems to be the culprit.  Until Skype itself is fixed, one can use Skype 5.2.60.113 from http://www.filehippo.com/download_skype/changelog/9465/ to bypass this issue.  Just reject any offer to update to 5.3 after installing 5.2, for now.
If there is anything I missed, please respond and I'll update this post with new information.  These are the ones that I have encountered so far with my Lenovo X120e.  Don't get me wrong, I like my X120e... it's just been a "learning" experience lol

  • Assigning default values to root and subnode attributes

    Hello,
I created a BO with a root node. In order to assign some default values after a root instance is created, I've implemented a determination. Everything is working as expected. When the instance is created (and only then) the init method is processed and the default values get assigned.
As a next step, I added a subnode. I need to assign some default values to a new instance as well. So, I've created a determination for this subnode, in the same way as I did it for the root node.
Now, when a new instance is created, the init method of the root is processed, but not the init method of the subnode. Only when I change a value of a subnode attribute and do a save, the init method of the subnode is processed and the init method of the root node as well (overwriting any changes with the default values, which is wrong).
How can I achieve that after instance creation (and only at this point), the init method of the root and then the init method of the subnode are processed?
    Thanks for any advice.
    regards,
    Ulli

    Hi Ulli,
It should work if you have configured as rightly mentioned by Tilmann.
but If you want to debug the framework to understand the behaviour, you have to go to class - /BOBF/CL_FRW.
    Put a break-point in any of these method - CHECK_AND_DETERMINE / DO_DETERMINATIONS
    / DO_DETERMINATIONS_RETRIEVE
    / DO_DETVAL
    Thanks,
    Bharath.

  • How to reset password in Lenovo's Rescue and Recovery?

    Hi all!
Here's my problem. Recently I have discovered that I have forgot my password for Lenovo's Rescue and Recovery. I've supposed that when I select "Protect your backups with a password" option, I could change my password for every new backup, whenever I remember my old password or not, but it seems not. So now I couldn't restore my previous backup and couldn't make a new one. Is there any option to reset the password?
Thanks and sorry for my English

  • Flex mobile project: web root and root path for a remote web service?

    Hi all,
i'm trying to set up the testdrive tutorial for flex mobile project, with flash builder 4.5
    and php data.
I've uploaded the files on my remote web space (e.g. http://mywebsite.org, and the
test file is http://mywebsite.org/TestDrive/test/test.php... and it works
correctly)... But when i'm setting properties of the project, i don't know what
to write into the web root and root path fields... I thing root path is simply
http://mywebsite.org... and whatever i write in the other fields (output folder
too) i have errors when i click on "validate configuration"...
What should i put into those fields? is zend framework (and gateway.php)
    strictly necessary?
As you can see... i'm a bit confused....
    Many thanks for any help
    Bye
    Alex

I thought it was a simple question...
    No advice?

  • Where is the cron for root and how to edit at start-up?

I was using Cronnix (as I am not very familiar with cron, unix etc). to create a root system task to reboot my server every night.
As I hit safe I noted I made a mistake and have it run every minute. so I do to get in any more.
So there are two solutions I can see. One is to remove the file that holds the information. in order to this I need to know where it is and I do not.
or to get in over command S at startup and change it there.
    Or?
FYI I can get to the computer in T mode via an other one.
as you might imagine any help is more than welcome.

I'd go for the single-user mode startup and edit the crontab from there.
Hold Cmd-S during power up. Once the system finishes booting follow the instructions on screen to mount the root filesystem, then log in as root and run:
    crontab -e
use the arrow keys to move to the offending cron entry then type:
    dd
    <esc>
    qw!
The 'dd' deletes the current line. <esc> (the Escape key) switches to command mode and 'qw!' tells vi to quit and save the file.
From there you should be able to exit to resume normal startup.

  • Sound Blaster Audigy Drivers and Applications CD-Rom

Does anyone know where I can get or download?the "Sound Blaster Audigy" "Drivers and applications" CD-rom?

    jay23,
First extract the RAR file you downloaded using WinRar. During the extraction, WinRar will create an ISO file which is an image of the installation CD. If you don't want to burn that ISO file to a CD, then download and install MagicDisc from the link I gave above. MagicDisc lets you mount an ISO file as a virtual hard dri've. You should be able to install from that virtual CD just as if it were a real hard copy CD, but I've never tried that so can't say for certain.

  • System with encrypted root and random passphrase

    Hello,
    everybody
I`ve got some question regarding some kind of secure systems.
After a short period of time, i had the idea of a system with some
security constructions in regarding some special situations.
This is as most of the time not really importend for me, but sometimes
i like to think about some very paranoid situations just for fun.
so every critisim is enjoyed and nice to hear.
I know that everything is only as secure as the weakest link, this especially the
case with the higher applications which provide services, increased with a network
and based with the underlying system and the physical access to the hardware.
So it will for sure has flaws, but i try to concentrade myself at this time to
the basics and maybe someone has the knowledge what is possible with an increasing
effort known at this time and possibilities of technology today.
Let`s say i have a system providing some services. It is headless so no physical keylogger
could be implemented. It has a bios protection and can only boot from usb. I`ve got
2 usbsticks. One with an encrypted system which autologin as root and the other usbstick
provides the keyfiles needed that the system will boot at all. The system boots into tmpfs
and then use /dev/random to generate a new long passfrase which becomes the new root-password.
The new password will be written to the second usbstick with a date and maybe other unigue
indicators (seperated from the original keyfile). So the new password is different of the
original booting one. This password is only valid for let`s say 12 hours after that the system
has to be rebooted. Maybe at this point the tmpfs rest storage has to be overwritten with
/dev/zero to delete every entry of the old one. (does the system system crash here? i don`t
know). After that the usbsticks are ejected and keeped save by the maintainer. The system has
also be keeped physical safe -- like in a safe.
So what is the main point here. The system gets a new and automaticaly generated password
every working day. The maintainer has the possibility to access the running maching with the
saved new password. The enemy can`t really insert a permanent access to the system because
of the everday changing password. The maintainer can leave the system alone in the safe,
and is only one who has the the sticks. Two sticks a more secure than one unencrypted.
I think this can also be expanded with a diskless system for more network systems, waiting
with sshd for the passphrase procedure keep everything "live" and every service passphrased
of the user, like files access to another system.
I don`t think that not somebody had the same idea, so there has to be flaws.
    Oh and by the way:
How can i forbid that the user can use strg+alt+del to reboot?
How can i see when network cable has been unplugged, maybe with an optical indicator
connected as a serial input to the lights of the switch ot maybe a more electrical way
examined with a serial input connected to the main system?
When i load the / system into a tmpfs i know exactly how big it is (there is no logging i don`t
know the size of a running /tmp ) and i will give it only the exactly size and mount the user tmpfs seperate.
So when the enemy gains user privileges he can only expand the user filesystem space for his
use, but he want to expand the root filesystem , the sytem will crash and maybe reboot, which
could maybe be recognized? Ok if he have root he could hardlink to the userspace. Hmmh i don`t know.
Maybe i should post this thread, but i want to know more.
There are many questions remained, but i am no coder and i will try not to go to far of my
    knowledge. So ....
    thanks for your answers
    and
    greetings

Without hacking the encrypt hook, you'll only be able to unlock one volume at the same time. Afaik the device mapper asks for a password for each encrypted partition, and using one for all won't work, you have to repeat the process for each partition, whereas the encrypt hook only seems to be able to handle one partition. You can hack it, but I haven't done that (yet), it's already quite messy you have to hack the hook file to make it apply to non-root partitions.

  • Best way to increase root and home part sizes

Just want to check what means to increase size of root and home. Here's the drive with them now:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    (xp) /dev/sdc1 * 1 7649 61440561 7 HPFS/NTFS
    /dev/sdc2 7650 8865 9767520 83 Linux (root)
    /dev/sdc3 8866 12512 29294527+ 83 Linux (home)
    /dev/sdc4 12513 60801 387881392+ 5 Extended
    /dev/sdc5 12513 12998 3903763+ 83 Linux (swap)
    /dev/sdc6 12999 60801 383977566 83 Linux (stuff)
Everything is backed up and I have other drives to move the /dev/sdc6 over onto temporarily. I have burned GParted LiveCD but I have never used it, would I boot into it and basically see GParted and be able to delete/edit/etc. my partitions?
Now here's where I get a bit confused: Will I have to delete root and/or home to increase their sizes? If so, what is the right way to copy root back over when I am done the partitioning? I have never copied a root back over onto the system. If I use something as simple as cp -pr, then from where would I do it? Would it be some console I can get into from the Arch LiveCD or something?
    Thanks for your help!

    jbromley wrote:
If you move the sdc6 partition off of this drive to make space available, then gparted should be able to move and resize the remaining partitions to take advantage of the remaining space. This means that you shouldn't have to copy over your root and home partitions after the resize. Of course, you'll want backups of these partitions just in case.
You second questions is good just for general knowledge. As mentioned above, you shouldn't have to do this. If you do need to copy over root/home the best way is to use some LiveCD to boot your machine. System Rescue CD and grml are two good rescue/admin type CDs, but I'll bet you can get to a console using the gparted live CD. Once your system is booted with some live CD,  mount your root/home partitions and your backup copy and copy over the root/home partitions from your backup. Something as simple as cp -pr should work here. Once you're done copying, unmount the drives and reboot. When you reboot after resizing a partition you'll probably have to run fsck, but it shouldn't be a problem.
It's all pretty straightforward. Note that resizing big partitions might take a long time. Oh yeah, be sure to back up your partitions before doing any of this.
jbromley, you give quality answers. Furthermore, you could use your Arch install cd as the "rescue" disk. It has all the tools you need to mount your partitions and copy files. But you shouldn't have to do that if gparted works.

  • Arbitration mailboxes exist in root and child domains, which to delete?

    Hi,
I discovered a problem with my Arbitration Mailboxes when setting up a Moderated Distribution group. The moderator wasn't receiving an email from Exchange advising that there was a message that needed to be approved or declined. A bit of digging in Message
Tracking and the Event log (IDs 9214 & 9217) revealed that the email address for the MS Exchange Approval Assistant exists twice, in both our root and child domains.
The question is which to delete, the account in root or child? All of the users are in the child domain so presumably it's the account in root which I should delete, but I'm not 100% sure.
    Any pointers very welcome.
    Cheers.

    Hi,
Agree with Andy. The arbitration accounts are in the root domain by default. You should delete the account in child domain. Then you can use the Get-Mailbox -Arbitration | fl displayname command to check if you can get this system mailbox in child domain.
If you can't get this system mailbox in the child domain, you need to run the following command, so that the scope of the search is changed to the forest level.
    Set-ADServerSettings –ViewEntireForest $true
    Best regards,

    Welcome to the Forum!
I can help you with this. I have a T400 LCD front bezel and LCD top cover both in excellent shape, as well as Left and Right hinges available. Hinges are tight. Much safer to buy from a trusted Forum member who knows Thinkpads inside out than take a chance on Ebay where they may send you the wrong parts, broken parts, or never send your merchandise at all. (I'm speaking from experience, unfortunately).
I also have Brand New genuine Lenovo 9-cell and 6-cell T400 batteries, MINT (like-new) keyboards, AC adapters and Brand NEW entire WXGA+ T400 LCD assembly with webcam. Anyone in need of assistance may contact me by clicking my name on the left.
I have sent you a PM about the T400 screen casing. Check your 'New' messages at the top of this page
Have a great day. (I do not work for Lenovo)

  • Turning Media Server on makes Lenovo EZ Media and Backup Center un-usable

I have a Lenovo EZ MEdia and BAckup Center. It was sent to me (under warranty)  to replace an Iomega model which failed.
If I turn on Media Server the device becomes un-usable. Logging onto the device and then selecting any operation takes 5 to 10 Minutes for each interaction. All windows network drives configured to the device become inaccessible.
When I turn it off then I can access all my windows networked drives again and I can log on and interact with the device without problem. Obviously anything which needs the media server function can no longer see the device.
I have the latest firmware 4.1.106.31982
This problem really needs fixing. I will be looking for another device if this carries on

    Hello wafitz
I seems you are experiencing a variation of this issue "Media scan causes the device interface to become unavailable".
I have also seen similar situations that happened when data is added to the unit when media server is enabled.
This could cause media server to potentially lock and cause performance issues to the rest of the unit.

  • ASA7.0(2) CA Trustpoint Configuration with Root and Subordinate CA

I'm trying to replicate a configuration that was done on my Con3015 to my ASA5520. I was given 2 CA certificate's: A Root and Subordinate and was told to load both or it will not work.
The ASA's use trustpoint configuration. I couldn't load both under one trustpoint so I created two trustpoints.
After loading both CA certificates using file-based enrollment, which trustpoint do I create a PKCS#10 enrollment file against?
Also, I don't understand how both trustpoints are associated. At the end I'd have 2 trustpoints (1 RootCA and 1 SubCA) but only 1 identity will be associate with 1 of the trustpoints.
Is it necessary to add specific commands in the trustpoint configuration?
Is it even necessary to have both CA certificates (Root and Sub CA) installed??

    Hello Aignacio,
I have the same problem now. Did you find an solution. If yes could you please send me the prosedure for migrate from 3015 to asa in terms of ca config
    Thanks
