Lenovo and HD password protection - BEWARE

if you set the HD passwords in BIOS, you cannot use the drives in any other laptop.
In my W520, I enabled the HD password in bios for both the msata and the SSD.  Both are curical M4's.
Then 4 days after 3yr NBD warranty expired (which i never used), the laptop died (motherboard).
I removed the two drives, and put them in a Dell desktop.  it asks for the password on bootup. I entered the password (a simple 5 letter word) as I have done every day for the last 3 years, and it said the password was wrong, and i could not access the drive. I tried another dell, then a tosiba.  All the same result.
I contacted Crucial, and they assured me that the bios HD password will work in any compture, so I must have "forgotten" the password I have typed every day for 3 years.
In desperiation, I purcahsed a W530, and put the 2 HD in the unit, not expecting it to work.  Guess what, I entered the same password and it worked first time!
So it seems that if you enable the HD1/HD2 password in a lenovo, and it dies, and you dont have access to another lenovo, the drives are bricked and you wont be able to get at your data.
This is a big problem, as I want to protect my data against theft, but I also want to not lose two expensive SSD drives if the laptop dies and I have no access to another lenovo (there is probably no Lenovo or Lenovo user in a 150km radious of gibraltar)

The password is encrypted in the BIOS code. This is necessary to avoid cracking the password using dictionary attacks. Passphrase encryption used to be an option, but now it is the only choice, starting, I think, with T410, T510, W510, etc. I have no solution for you, other than getting access to a Lenovo machine T410 or later.  Older machines that had encryption as an option will not work because the encryption algorithm changed

  • AirPrint and pdf password protected file issue

    Hello
I'm facing issue while printing pdf password protected file via Airprint.
From my iPhone /iPad I can print without any issue to my HP dj 2540 almost everything except pdf password protected file.
The same pdf file (protected with password) can be printed without any issue form any PC/laptop.
Do anyone have any idea on how to solve this issue, please?
    Thanks
    regards
    Michele

It seems that everyone asking this question have links from Grand Canyon University which will soon have over a 100,000 online students that all use ebooks that open just fine in Adobe Acrobat on their PCs BUT NOT on the mobile versions of Adobe Acrobat. Whatever allows this on PCs needs to be added to the mobile version soon.  We rely on our etextbooks that can ONLY be opened on the PC version of Acrobat.  That is ridiculous.  I can't believe with all the posts regarding password protected ebooks on this forum....that it hasn't been resolved.  No one can give you a link because the ebooks are on a website that needs a password.  We can save the books to our harddrives/dropbox...  I could send you a copy, but thats it.  Surely someone at Adobe knows what the hell is going on and can test the problem out themselves?

  • Can I search all VIs in memory and ignore password-protected VIs?

Every time I do a LabVIEW search for text, I get a dialog box saying this:
"Error Code Database.vi is password-protected. Enter the password and click 'Verify' to search this VI's block diagram."
So I have to click various buttons and boxes to make that box stop nagging me.
I want to never see that dialog box again in my entire life. How can I make it never appear, short of moving over to some non-LabVIEW language?

LabVIEW 2010 has the option to 'ignore password protected VIs'  during a search.

  • Using cron to stop and restart password protected instance (App Server 7)

I have been asked by a customer to create a cron job to stop and restart their web application running under Applications server 7.
I have created the script and can stop the instance, but I am unable to start it as it is asking for a password.
I have included this in the script but it doesn't seem to like having a password supplied this way.
Am I doing something wrong or Are there any alternative ways of stopping and restarting an application, using Cron?

Have you looked at using password.conf file as described in --

  • Stolen iPad is off and password protected.

My iPad was stolen and is password protected. Is there a way I can remotely turn it on. Find my iPad won't work if it is not connected to a wifi or 3G network. I figure someone out there has figured this out.  If you can remotely turn it off, someone must have figured out how to remotely turn it on.

Yes, it can easily be restored without someone knowing the screenlock passcode.
Sorry, but there is no way to turn on an iPad remotely. If it's just asleep, you can if you have access to another iOS device such as an iPhone try sending an email, iMessage or Facetime request and perhaps you could hear the announcement of the message and locate it that way. But if it's off, or not connected to a WiFi 3G network, there's nothing you can do.

  • Password protected iWeb sites - problem with login

This is an FYI regarding a problem I recently encountered. Neither MobileMe, nor Apple tech support or specialists were able to resolve it, but I finally figured it out.
I created a company website for my client, including secondary websites that were password protected in order for her clients to download support materials for her classes. The passwords worked fine last night, but this morning we could not login with the setup passwords. Even when we changed them and tried to re-upload the entire site, we could not. I don't know specifically what changed, but we went through a plethora of solutions over many hours, but to no avail.
In the end, it appears that how we setup the domain was where the problem existed. We have our own domain through Netfirms, which we set up to use in MobileMe as per the instructions. In Netfirms however, when you log into version 8, it does not give you the option to change the CNAME, as MobileMe states needs to be done. Instead I had set up the domain to forward to our "web.me.com/company" site. This was the problem.
To correct this, I turned off the url forwarding and logged out of Netfirms. Then logged back in, but into version 6 of the control panel. From here I was able to setup the CNAME as web.me.com. And ta-da, once it updated on the server the entire site and all password protected areas are working as needed.
    Phew.

To password protect a site, folder or page when using a server other than MobileMe you need to either enable this in your control panel or do it using a .htaccess file.
The server side script is the most secure way to do it. There are javascripts that you can use but they are less secure.....
    http://www.javascriptkit.com/script/cutindex6.shtml
Doing it via the control panel is easier but, if you want to go the htaccess route, you can generate it online here....

  • Crash when editing a Password Protected page

I have an issue with a Mac user that is trying to edit a site
I created. Some folders on this site are password protected –
meaning that pages on the site require user names and passwords to
be entered for them to be viewed by web surfers. This user can log
on and edit parts of the site that are not password protected but
when he navigates to a folder that is, and chooses a page to edit,
his computer locks up. Normally, when one of my PC users chooses a
page to edit that requires a password, from within CT, they are
presented the security window and prompted to enter the info. Once
entered, CT allows assess to the page for editing as normal.
Anyone know why the Mac is locking up when this user tries to
edit a page with a password?
This user can “surf” the site with their version
of Safari or Firefox and view password protected pages – just
    not from within CT
    We are using CT CS4

The error occurs when they use the choose button. And, that
is currently the only way to get access to those pages since all of
the password protected pages do not have direct links. These page
links are sent out via email ( with un and pw info ) so clients can
    get direct access.
I do not know if he has tried typing the url directly in the
address bar ( can that even be done ?)
The only thing else I've learned is that he is running OS
    10.4.11.
    Thanks for responding.

  • How to make a (partly) password protected website

I would like to know if it is possible to make a web site (by using iWeb and MobileMe) that is partly public and partly password protected?

You can do it that way. But you can make it look like one web site. In Site 1 (the open site) add a blank page with the name for the protected site. In that blank page add the following code to an HTML snippet:
    <script type="text/javascript">
parent.window.location = "URL TO PAGE 1 OF PROTECTED SITE"; </script>
The "dummy" page will immediately redirect the visitor to the protected site. To get back the the main site you can put in a dummy page and add the same redirect code sending the visitor back to the original site. This puts the links in the navbar and makes it look like all one site. If you have more than one protected page and want them to be separate of each other create a separate protected site and do the same for it.
To get the URL for the page you want to redirect to you need to publish the sites first, go to them and get the URL from the browser's window.
My Demo Sites are setup this way. The Contents page for each site is redirected to a separate Contents site which contains the index of all the pages in the three demo sites. That way I only have to change the index on the Contents site instead of doing it for each site individually.

  • Password-protected podcasts; does Podcasts app support?

Now that a beloved podcast has gone behind a paywall, I'm in need of support for password protection in Podcasts app. The workaround in iOS5 was to enter the password on iTunes on the Mac, and the program would update to the Music app on the iPhone. Now, the Music app no longer supports podcasts at all, and the password-protected podcasts seem to transfer to the iPhone intermittently. And certainly, there seems to be no support or subscribing to password-protected apps from Podcasts app directly.
    Or am I missing something?

I've been getting a similar problem. When I update my podcast feeds, if I don't press ok on the password window before it times out, it kills Itunes. I think what is happening is that Itunes is start to request the feed, gets an "I want an user name and password" dialog from the server and then pops up a window. If you don't respond in time, the far server ends the session, and when you finally do respond, itunes can't handle the response from the far server and crashes.
What needs to happen is that Itunes needs to say "I have a username and password associated with this feed" and automatically send that, then only prompt the user if there is a response from the server saying there is a problem.
That being said, I still have the same problem of not finding a place to report this bug as well.

  • Labview 8.6.1 - builder message vi is password protected

I am new in Labview 8.6.1 and I am receiving some messages that I can not explain why. While labview is building an executable I have few messages like the one posted in attachment. The messages are related to the vis that are part of Labview library and are password protected. Usually I ignore the messages. I wonder why I see such messages.
Another question: in Labview 7.1.1 you can see entire hierarchy of the project you want to build an executable from just in the builder by exploring the table from the VI Settings. Is it possible to see similar thing in Labview 8.6? Or Labview 8.6 builds from entire project no meter if I set the builder in a certain way with only some vis from entire project?

  • Can a document author password protect something after its already downloaded?

If I download a document from a website and am not required to enter a password to open it after I’ve downloaded it, is it possible for the author to add password protection to the downloaded document later? For example, let’s say I am a member of a paid website that allows its members to download documents. Let’s say I’ve downloaded some stuff and was not required to enter a password at the time. If I cancel my membership can they somehow change my downloaded copy in my computer and add password protection? Meaning if I cancel my membership I could possibly lose access to the stuff I’ve already downloaded?

Awesome. I looked up online how to check to see if they used DRM and they don't for any of their documents. Thank you so much!

  • Password Protect: Whole website or individual pages??

    Hi all.
The 'Password Protection' feature inside iWeb (inside Inspector), can I just password protect ONE webpage? E.G. like password one of my special Blog page so that only "my blog members" can log in and read?
    Thanks and cheers

The "Password Protection" feature of iWeb works only to protect entire sites...not individual pages. The workaround, then, is to make the page that you want to protect a separate site in and of itself and password protect it. You can then create hyperlinks to this password protected site from your regular iWeb site.

  • Password protection/ disabling picture downloading

I am constructing a website fro my photography business and I would like to offer my clients online proofs in the form of password protected album pages. I understand from a previous post that I can create an external password protected site on iweb and link it to my overall website. As far as password protection goes, can I assign specific passwords to specific people or would I have to create multiple external websites to have multiple client passwords?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What I think would work would be to create a site for each customer and then password protect that site with the customer's name and some password. The individual sites can be linked to from your primary site with text links and/or a photo that is linked to the customers page/site.
As far as using multiple sites and keeping them manageable I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites which I use as "pages" in my primary site. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.

  • Mavericks Preview Opens Password Protected PDF?

I exported a image in CS6 Illustrater as a pdf. I saved the pdf using two passwords. One password was for opening it and the second one for editng it. It was saved with any editing turned off. When I opened it in Preview on Mavericks the Preview app correctly displayed a password textfield to open it. After I entered the password it opened correctly. When I attempted a basic edit of the pdf, a simple rotatation of the image, Preview displayed a little note indicating that the original document was password protected so it made a copy of the original pdf. I was then free to edit the copy in Preview such as rotate, add txt, and so forth. I don't think this is going to make many people who distribute and sell password protected pdf files that happy. What the heck is going on here?

It looks like this issue may be limited to files that have been set to restrict the user's ability to print or edit the document (even after a password has been entered for viewing).  I found that a password-protected PDF could be viewed in iBooks, but after I added the print restriction, I had the same problem you reported.
