Lenovo G40-70 Bricked by BIOS Update

Hi all,
Need help on my Lenovo G40-70 that I've just bought 6 months ago where I accidently bricked the laptop after BIOS update. It seems during the BIOS updating process it when well but after 2nd reboot there's some message on the screen that the BIOS failed to update factory setting and it freeze on the message for quiet sometimes. After a long wait I decided to long press Start button for hard reboot. Then the scary part comes in where it seems the laptop can't longer shows the Lenovo logo & cannot even boot to Windows, just black screen.
Hope anyone can help me on this and give some advice on what I'm going to do. I would like to tried myself first before ending up with warranty claim since I'm worried I've brick the warranty due to wrong BIOS update procedure....

  • W540 brick after BIOS update

    Hi all.
I have one month old W540. I received a notice on several recommended updates via Lenovo software, among them a BIOS update. Naivly enough, I accepted to install them all. All was installed successfully, but upon restart, my computer hangs with just a black screen.
When power is pressed, it starts the keyboard light and turns it down. Nothing else.
I tried draining the BIOS battery by removing battery and power and pressing the power button for 1 minute. No change.
There are some threads out there that  explain how to use a crisis recovery disk. However, can someone help with BIOS type? I'd also rather try it with older version on BIOS, but I don't know where I can download from?
I want to try the fix on my own, since I am currently working on a project not near to any service, I'll be here for three weeks more, and I really need my computer.
    Help please!

I should preface this, that I have not done this with a W540, but with other computers.
I'm using BIOS 2.10 which as of today appears to the latest.   Dowload the install version from "Update from a Bootable CD".  If you are a geek, you could in theory make a USB booting disk and install that way.
    >  BIOS Update Bootable CD for Windows 8.1 (64-bit), 8 (64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad W540
Then change the BIOS to boot from the DVD/CD Drive (you can immediately hit the clealy labelled <F12> key to start the boot selection menu.
It might by default go to the DVD drive if it cannot find the HD.  Do make sure your computer is connected to the mains.  Just check the light to make sure you are on AC.
Follow the on screen directions, or it might start the BIOS update as a default.  When finished, remove the CD, reboot, and you should be good.  In any event, you will have to reset the BIOS to use the default OS drive. It may work without reseting, as normal BIOS check all drives until it finds a bootable device.  If the bootable device is not the primary choice in the BIOS, it will boot, but there will be a delay.  That can clearly be seen on the HD i/o light as the computer seeks.

  • Pavilion dv6235nr bricked by BIOS "update"

Recently I was working on a dv6235nr, whose BIOS had not been updated since the machine was purchased in 2007.  Naturally, I thought it should be perfectly safe to install the most recent BIOS, version F.2E, dated 12 April 2010.  And it should have been safe.  Until now, I have never, ever, had a single problem with manufacturer-supplied BIOS updates on any other computer, media player, or any device.
But HP's buggy "update" destroyed my machine.  While the BIOS reflash completed normally, the machine is now completely useless.  Upon powerup, the fan spins, the display remains blank, and there is a pattern of excessively loud beeps through the built-in speakers.
The pattern of beeps is "one long, two short," which I have read elsewhere might indicate a defective graphics device.  That seems really unlikely, as the machine only has built-in Intel GMA graphics.  Nothing happened to it that should have caused a hardware failure.  I cannot convince myself that the Intel GMA chipset somehow spontaneously failed right after a BIOS update.  The timing is just too suspicious.
    Things I already tried:
-HP's "hard reset" procedure did nothing.
-Well, there's really nothing else I can try, since the machine won't even get as far as POST.
The evidence suggests that HP's defective "update" bricked my machine.  How do I fix it?
Is there some way to put an older firmware on a USB stick or SD card and re-flash it to BIOS without being able to see anything?

This appears to be similar to what happened to my S10.  See this post

  • Lenovo G780 not working after BIOS update

First of all I want to say that I am extremely disappointed with the experience I had with my Lenovo. After I bought it I found out that Lenovo, for some reason, disabled the Turbo Boost option of the CPU. I tried to fix it by entering the BIOS but the options there were limited, so I decided to update the BIOS. I downloaded the BIOS update for 64-bit windows(i am running windows 8 which is compatible with the said update utillity). I ran the .exe and followed all the instructions (did not shut-down restart or anything my computer). After installing it automatically restarted and a Lenovo logo prompted on the screen followed by ">>Start PXE over IPv6, Press [ESC] to EXIT..." after that "EFI Network 0 for IPv6(numbers and letters) boot failed". Then ">>Start PXE over IPv4" which failed and a blue box poped saying
"Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed. Insert Recovery Media and Hit any ket then select boot manager to choose a new boot device or to boot recovery media". Pressed ok and got me to Boot Manager screen. Boot option Menu had only EFI Network 0 for IPv6 and EFI Network 0 for IPv4". What should I do?
Note that I tried to start up both with and without the ethernet cable in.

    Hi.
I also (stupidly) updated to this new BIOS version and ran into the problems you described. I did what Lenovo recommended but nothing worked. But this how I solved my problem:
Enter the BIOS by pressing F2 just after booting up the computer.
When inside BIOS go to Boot and chang the following settings: Boot Mode [Legacy Support] AND Boot Priority [Legacy first].
Save and Exit and your computer should start.
Whence inside check if windows is activitated and check if the new BIOS is registered.
PS: I have scandivian G780 with an i3. Pls responds if this helps

After flash and restart I can hear only beeps 1-3-3-1. I have tried to find solution to recover BIOS but no luck. Solution with wincrisis does not work for me. I have tried to use e_bcpvpw.exe with $0AG9000.FL1 file but no luck - Source file format not acceptable - missing header!

    OK,
if memory stick are preinstalled from Lenovo' factory BIOS upgrade can't cause beeps issue. There might be issues if memory stick parameters are not the same as officially supported.
I think you're finding the name of BIOS recovery file name. Have you a file fvrecovery.fd in the folder where BIOS update tool is unpacked in?

  • GE60 2OE Bricked after BIOS Update

So I updated the BIOS from 511 to 517 under Windows 8 by executing this command:
    afuwinx64 E16GCIMS.517
It seemed it worked fine, so I rebooted the system, but now it doesnt boot, cant even see the MSI logo (even tho the keys for the fan and keyboard lights work fine).
    What can I do?

So you used the included files and just updated without taking the time to read what the website has?
There are instructions on the website where you download the bios on how to actually update it properly. Most likely the whole reason this happened is because you didn't follow any instructions at all. Even using the batch file included in the download probably would have given better results than this.
    http://www.msi.com/files/pdf/Flash_BIOS_by_UEFI_BIOS_Setup_Utility_en.pdf
    http://www.msi.com/files/pdf/Win8_UEFI_BIOS_Update_auto_en.pdf
Both of those are very different from the simple process you did.
On top of that, there's also this:
    >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
Most likely you will need to contact MSI in order to do an RMA to get it fixed.
    >>How to contact MSI.<<

    hi alirj,
Your issue might be similar to this thread.
Can you try to disable UEFI by:
    1. Booting into the BIOS (press F2 after you turn the computer ON)
    2. In the Boot Tab, set UEFI to disabled or legacy mode and press F10 to save and exit.
    3. Try to repair your Windows installation and observe.

  • Lenovo Solutions Center not showing driver/BIOS updates?

  • G450 crashed after Bios update

My laptop G450 can't reboot and the screen is black with all lights and sounds off after I updated the BIOS. I downloaded the right BIOS software from Lenovo.com and installed it. But the driver software didn't work well. It can't complete the installation even after 2 hours and seemimgly caused my laptop dead. The computer can't restart or be closed by holding the power button over 10 seconds or longer. So I have to disconnect the power adapter and disconnected the system power. From then on, the laptop can't start without any lights on and the screen stands black even I reconnect the power adapter. I got the adapter and system off and pushed the power button five times with holding it over 5 seconds. But G450 can't start yet.  So what should I do now? Do I need to change the motherboard or the Bios can be updated again? Do I need to pay for this Bios error?
    Thanks for your help.

The service and support is really bad in U.S. Call Center representives are not pleased to help me solve questions. As they picked your call up, they just asked your personal information, coldly! When they gave some advice, they let me write down a case number. I asked a guy sent me an email about my case even at the first place I already gave all my information to him. I never got such an email. They told me they didn't have such a master board in their stock in U.S. But they can't give how long time they can solve this issue using other resource.
I updated the Bios update software from lenovo's website, but some Bios update operation information is placed in another file which I got to know after I had been updating the program. They didn't put all information in the single Bios  file and there isn't guide when you run this file on your computer. They are not aware that their fault resulted me in failing to update my computer and turning it into a brick! They want to charge me $399 to replace the master board instead!
Why does Lenovo have a very bad market share in U.S? See what they have and what they did. I bought two lenovo laptops in U.S. I will not buy any more again even I am from China.

  • Lost ATI CCC after bios update

I clicked on "system update"(ThinkVantage3) in the start menu. Then "get new updates", It recommended a bios update so I installed it. Now, it replaced the ATI CCC icon in the task bar with a Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for Mobility" icon. I checked and it now says I have a ATI FireGL V5700 graphics card as opposed to the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 before the update. Also, when I click on the ATI Catalyst Control Center program in the start menu, it says, "ATI CCC cannot be started because the currently active GPU is not supported". How do I fix this? Or, how do I uninstall this update? I can't change the screen resolution or any of the other graphics features.

    Hello,
please try to download newest Ati drivers from Lenovo support pages.
    Regardings bios update:
    Version 1.18-1.01
[Important] An incorrect display adapter name is displayed on ATI FireGL V5700 model (ThinkPad W500). Note: Make sure that you have updated the display driver with the following version before BIOS update. -ThinkPad Switchable Graphics Driver for Windows Vista Version 8.52.4.4-080919a-069896C-Lenovo (7vd535ww) or later or -ATI Display Driver for Windows XP Version 8.503.2.2-080818a-069536C-Lenovo (7yd119ww) or later Or you will be asked for an appropriate driver for a newly found hardware device and the display may be VGA(640x480) mode. In VGA mode, your icon arragement on the desktop will be messed up.
(Fix) The external display may have blank screen when the computer is attached to the Docking Station with the LCD closed and then is powered on.
(Fix) Serial ATA Controller mode option setting is set as wrong value via WMI interface.

  • X61: BIOS Update with/from USB Stick or 3rd party CD-ROM

I was trying to update the BIOS of my X61 (7673-CTO) but surprisingly read, that with Vista 64Bit I am only able to do this via a bootable CD which is fine for me (although to my very personal opinion a bit old-fashined). The bigger problem is, that this CD obviously does NOT boot properly from/with a third party external USB-CD-ROM, which I personally think is outrageous! So I am somehow forced to buy "an original Lenovo-Drive" to make a BIOS update?? Forum, please proove me I am wrong!

    Hello all,
I, too, found this oversight on the part of Lenovo to be quite distressing. It is possible to upgrade the X61 BIOS with a USB thumb drive. I have provided directions at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=817897
The above tutorial is aimed towards Ubuntu Linux users. However, I believe that users of Vista should be able to follow along. Please let me know if you have any questions... the process is simple enough that it should be possible with any OS out there right now.

  • Conflicting instructions for BIOS update: boot from CD but undock from Ultrabase?

I have an X61 and am trying to update the BIOS to the latest.
Lenovo support has a downloadable "BIOS Update Bootable CD" for my model of ThinkPad - an ISO image that I can use to create a bootable CD that will update my BIOS.
However the instruction file includes this sentence: "If your computer is attached to any kind of docking station or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before proceeding." This is before I boot from the CD.
If I undock from the ThinkPad X6 UltraBase then how can I boot from the CD??
Should I just ignore the instruction to undock?
Sorry if this seems silly but I'm a bit paranoid about updating the BIOS.
FYI here is the download page at lenovo: http://tinyurl.com/248kwp
    Thanks for any clarification
    Mike

    Mike,
go to this site, it's a heck of alot easier to use. On the other hand you can also use system update, it'll get most automatically for you. For SU make sure .NET Framework v.2.0 or later is installed.
