Lenovo J115 7387 9HU memory upgrade to 4 GB fails

I've been running Linux Etch amd64 with 512 MB stock RAM for a while without any problems. 512 MB is just not enough RAM for what I'm doing, so after upgrading to an additional 2 GB RAM (identical spec'd RAM 5300U-555 667 Mhz) along with the stock 512 MB, my system became randomly unstable with disk corruption and other weirdness such as running apps suddenly exiting. Switching back to the 512 MB solved the problem. Switching to just the 2GB RAM causes the problem to reappear so it's not a combination problem. I tried another 2GB RAM chip with the same results, and I ran an overnight memtest that reported no memory problems. I also checked the HD and it's fine - this is clearly a memory problem.
I checked for a BIOS update and indeed there is one that specifically addresses a 2GB RAM issue, so I installed the BIOS update without any trouble.
After the BIOS update my system no longer has disk corruption problems (that's at least an improvement), but instead it reports "bad page state in process" errors and it will sometimes get a kernel crash.
In addition to the instability problem, if I put in 4 GB RAM (supposedly the maximum supported limit for this machine), the BIOS only displays 3006 MB of RAM, yet the OS (which is 64-bit) does display all 4 GB of RAM and reports that it is making use of the full 4GB of RAM (I load up a whole bunch of things that will take up the full amount before swapping to disk).
I tried 2 x 512 MB RAM giving me 1GB of RAM and it all works perfectly, so it seems that there's still a 2GB memory problem and the BIOS update only improved the situation but did not fully solve it as was claimed.
Well to say the least I'm not at all impressed
The BIOS has no tweaking options to try out, so it looks like I'm stuck unless Lenovo addresses the problem with another BIOS update, but that seems unlikely for this machine.
Does anyone know of a solution to this problem, or should I just trash the MB and buy something else? Any recommendations as to what mobo will fit into the existing case?

An update:
My system seems to be working OK with the 4GB RAM upgrade for a few days now since the BIOS upgrade. The BIOS still does not report the correct amount of RAM, but this does not seem to matter and my OS appears to be making use of all of it. The page errors may have been due to an unrelated problem (software not hardware). If I have any further problems with this machine I'll post in here.

  • Lenovo G560 doesn't memory upgrade probelm

I'm having trouble with upgrading memory in my G560.The current configuraion has a DDR3 1333Mhz module. I'm trying to add a new 4GB DDR3L 1600Mhz SO-DIMM module Transcend make. The BIOS recognizes the 6MB memory, but while booting my windows7 home 64 bit, it shows error. It gives me a option of repair, but when i select repair it just stops at a grey screen. The same set of 2GB and 4GB modules works fine together in my DELL E4520. So i know that the 2 modules are working fine. If i try the new 4GB module standalone, i get a BSOD with IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. If i try two modules of 2GB DDR3 1333, the G560 works fine and windows boots normally. Can you suggest a way out

    hi anantha_ak,
    Welcome to the Forums.
If the Transcend 4GB DDR3L 1600Mhz RAM have dual voltage capability (like this item), does it have the same memory timings like in the stock RAM?
Some DDR3L (1.35v) memory modules are designed to be backwards compatible to DDR3 (1.5v) a.k.a. dual voltage so you can mix and match them with DDR3 (1.5v) modules but depending on the design, this is dependent on the BIOS if it will allow the usage of dual voltage. Otherwise, you will only see one working memory module or sometimes, the system will not POST due to hardware incompatibility.
In addition, as discussed in this thread, the G560 is a bit picky when comes to the RAM. It's possible that it doesn't support the memory timings of the 4GB DDR3L RAM (maybe due to the low voltage specs) compared to the timings in the G560's BIOS (1.5v specs). If that 4GB DDR3 is a newly purchased, I would consider getting a different RAM like the one that worked for other users in this thread.

  • Blue screen after upgrades - 3000 J115 7387-A32

I recently upgraded the graphics card and memory on my Lenovo 3000 J115 7387-A32.  After the memory upgrade I noticed that when the computer booted it would 1) go to the blue screen, 2) automatically reboot, 3) boot normally to windows vista.
I upgraded the Graphics Card from an onboard Nvidia 6100 to an Nvidia 8500 GT pci expressI completed this upgrade a couple days prior to the memory upgrade and noticed no issues when booting the computer.
I upgraded from 1 gig (2 x 512 mb) of memory to 4 gigs (2 x 2g) ddr2I did notice that the bios system summary notes the memory as 2.5g while the vista - control panel - system notes 4g, but based on the other posts that seems to be a 32-bit OS limitation and should not be causing the blue screen.
After the computer boots normally, it acknowledges that it did not boot properly and offers to find a solution.  It notes that the problem is due to the NVIDIA nforce serial ATA driver (which as far as I can tell is not related to either graphics card?) and takes me to the NVIDIA site.  I scan my system for both graphics and motherboard, and the results of both scans are that I have the most up to date drivers available.
I did update my bios through this process.
It does eventually boot up and seems to be working fine, but the blue screen shouldn't occur and I would like to prevent it if I can.  I would appreciate any help on this issue.

what are you specs cause i also had some bluie screen errors b4 ( didnt upgrade anything at that point)..and btw i am also looking for an upgrade on a graphics card...i found couple but i have no clue how much my lenovo 7387 can handle (in terms of power supply) can you please help me out here...

  • Unable to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on Lenovo 3000 J115 7387-26U

    Hi Everyone,
I am unable to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on my Lenovo desktop. Model : 3000 J115 7387-26U.
When I try to boot my DVD, the systems makes a loud whirring noise.. as if trying to read from DVD, the screen goes blank couple of times and then Windows XP starts up (from my HDD).
I have a Windows 7 32 bit DVD and it successfully started up and I could see the install screen (though I didn't install it. I want to install 64 bit version of the software).
Anyone else seen this problem? Is there some workaround available?
    Thanks for your help.
    Swam

    Hi:
The Intel link you posted doesn't work, so I don't know what you have tried.
    See if this works...
Download the drivers from this link below (first file listed -- 64 bit).
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=23060&keyword=Intel+Rap...
Extract (copy) the files onto a usb flash drive without any folders.
With the flash drive and W7 installation media plugged into the machine, boot from the W7 installation media.
After you select the install now option, select the Drive Options - Advanced menu, then select the Load Driver option.
You should now see the storage driver files listed.
If you check the box, it will only include the compatible driver.
Follow the prompts and hopefully, W7 will install.

  • 3000 J115 7387 - Current BIOS 2NKT31A doesn't support 4gb RAM

I have a Lenovo 3000 Desktop J115 7387-26u and the current BIOS, just downloaded and tested from Lenovo's "support" site, doesn't support 4gb of RAM properly.  I have dual 2gb DIMMs, for a total of 4gb, and both Lenovo's PC-Doctor diagnostics and another memory scanner report to me that I have 4gb.  See this screen print showing PC-Doctor's RAM report compared to what Windows "sees".
When I boot the system, the BIOS only reports 3006mb RAM is present.  Clearly it's recognizing both DIMMs.  I've swapped the DIMMs and the results are the same.
Lenovo, PLEASE RELEASE A BIOS that properly supports what the system claims to support!

Two things.  First, "just so you know", the Lenovo 3000 J115 7987 is an Athlon 64 X2 (which you would know if you checked the system specs),and second, I'm talking about the BIOS failing to recognize the RAM that the system specs claim it should be recognizing.  This is regardless of OS.

  • Memory Upgrade for T61

    Hi friends,
I have a T61 7663-xxx system, with 1 GB PC2-5300 667 MHz RAM. My Front Side Bus is 800 MHz ( I think so!), Everest software reports my memory controller is dual channel capable, and ~ 85% physical utilization of RAM. I have a nVidia Quadro NVS 140M 128 MB graphics card, but Everest reports 512 MB ?
I would like to upgrade my RAM, and buy some online.
    a) Should I buy a similar 2 GB PC2-5300 RAM for my system for performance boost, running Windows XP 32 bit? If so, should I buy Lenovo RAM only, for maintaining my 3 year warranty intact?
Only ThinkPad and Lenovo memory will assume ThinkPad and Lenovo notebook systems limited warranty
    b) What are the other best alternatives for good quality, reliable laptop memory,  besides Lenovo?
    c) Would it be better if I am able to buy RAM which can match my FSB? Will this have any performance benefit? Do these similar FSB speed RAM exist?
Kindly suggest top memory makers, if any.
I could not find any Lenovo 800 MHz memory from their website.
Kindly help me solve my memory upgrade problem.
I am a mechanical engineering student, hence I don't have any idea about FSB and the like, so I request the learned members to cast light on this area.
Info about reputed online sites in US, with fast delivery will be very much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Hmm.  As far as I know, the internal graphics card can't be upgraded.  There's some dock you can buy that lets you add a graphics card for use with an external monitor, but I don't know much about it.  The cpu is more likely to be upgradeable, but don't attempt unless you know a decent amount about hardware servicing.  Also, make sure the cpu will be supported by the motherboard!  Best not to buy one with a clockspeed higher than what Lenovo sold (core 2 duo at 2.6 ghz).
Why do you want to upgrade so much?  I run 2.1ghz with discrete graphics and 2gb ram under Vista, and it runs beautifully.  If you have integrated graphics, then that might be a bit of a pain, but hey, you've got better battery life!
Anyway, I'd look more into de-cluttering your computer to speed stuff up.  Remove anything you don't need, especially Lenovo tools that run in the background and you may not need.  Turn off search indexing (slower searches, but faster overall performance).  There are some nice guides online, if you google "vista tuneup."
Good luck!  Enjoy your T61 as it is!  It's a lovely laptop

  • B320 memory upgrade

My new B320 has 4 Gb RAM but I believe 8 is possible. With 64 bit Win7 I reckon it would be worthwhile to add the extra 4 Gb.
The leaflet with the PC shows how to access the memory slots and I have assembled or upgraded at least 10 PCs in the past. Sounds a doddle.
Question 1 is, should I/can I buy the memeory modules from Lenovo?
Question 2 If not, I can buy them elsewhere but if I fit them will I invalidate the warranty?
Indeed, even if I buy from Lenovo, will fiiting them likewise invalidate the warranty?

    Hello again,
First, you can download the warranty documents here:  Warranty Service Policies  The two documents you would be interested in are the Lenovo Limited Warranty and the Lenovo Limited Warranty for Storage and Accessory Products. Now, I am not a lawyer but I am a consumer that owns a B575 so I though it might be beneficial (for both of us) to try and answer your questions so I would already have the answers just in case I need them so here goes my interpretation:
You asked:  If I buy parts from Lenovo, will fitting them likewise invalidate the warranty?
Warranty does not cover: failure of, or damage caused by, any third party products, including those that Lenovo may provide or integrate into the Lenovo product at your request.
My interpretation: Since Lenovo doesn't make memory, I guess all upgrades must be removed before requesting warranty service as they are looking to service the exact unit that left the factory.
You asked: should I/can I buy the memory modules from Lenovo?
Warranty states: Before your Service Provider exchanges a product or part, you agree to:
remove all features, parts, options, alterations, and attachments not under warranty service.  (Also see above statement)
My interpretation: Yes, you can buy memory from Lenovo or any third party vendor; however, the part should be removed and the original part(s) should be returned/reinstalled before requesting warranty service.
You asked: can I buy them elsewhere but if I fit them will I invalidate the warranty?
Warranty states: see previous warranty statement about removing parts before requesting service.
My interpretation: Yes, you can buy and install your own parts; however, any part, installed "after the fact", must be removed before requesting Lenovo factory warranty service. I also believe if Lenovo finds any evidence of any alteration attempt (from factory delivered status), they may invalidate the warranty for end-user tampering (although that is not clearly stated in the warranty). In other words, you would not be able to get warranty service on a "modified unit."
So, that is my interpretation which specific detail excerpted from the Lenovo warranties documents for reference and now I welcome all forum members to respond to my interpretations and if they know any different, from either experience or a written reference, I would ask them to please correct my assumptions accordingly. However, please do not provide any one-liners (ie, Lenovo covers their parts or if Lenovo installs the upgrade part it is covered) without a written reference.
    Good luck!
    P.S.
    Here's my bottom line interpretation:
Lenovo will only service the unit (under warranty) if it is in the same condition as it left the factory. You cannot upgrade the unit in any way (even if Lenovo does it for you) and be able to maintain the full warranty service. In other words, you can't ship the entire unit back to Lenovo with upgraded parts inside. However, I'm sure Lenovo has a specific "parts warranty" to cover "only" the upgraded part so if that part would go bad, it could be returned to Lenovo for a "parts exchange." I'm also sure that any third-party vendor would have a similar parts warranty.

  • Memory upgrade on iMac G3 700, help with system crashes

I tried to do a memory upgrade on my iMac, so I bought two kingston 256 MB PC133 modules, but none will work, the system starts, but hangs in about two minutes after loading the desktop. I went back to use the older memory module wich is an spectek, but I need the upgrade, any ideas?
    Thanks!
    FedericoMG.
Ps: Sorry about my english... I'm from Argentina... :-P

    Hi Federicomg
The iMac 700 G3 should have been supplied with 1 stick of 256mb ram. However which is the correct type i am not sure as the Apple specifications for this model state PC100 whereas my iMac G3 700 graphite was supplied with 256 MB PC133-333 SDRAM
    http://support.apple.com/specs/imac/iMacSummer2001.html
Apple profiler from my iMac this is the original supplied RAM from Apple:-
    DIMM0/J13: Size: 256 MB
    Type: SDRAM
    Speed: PC133-333
    1) I would re-instal the original ram and open system profiler to see what type the ram is.
    2) Keeping the original stick in place add another stick of the new ram and look again in profiler to see if its recognised and again try the second stick to see if there's a problem with one of the sticks.
I am currently running my iMac with a small upgrade of RAM and the additional RAM is 128MB of PC100 and i have noticed the performance improvement since adding the PC100 so it's working and i have suffered no ill effects doing this..

  • MS-6195 memory upgrade

    Hi,
My system is based on Ms-6195 K7 pro and Athlon 700 mhz. 192 Mb Ram (128Mb module + 64Mb module)
    Problem:
when I try to upgrade memory with a sdram 256Mb PC100 module, the memory test can't finish and my system don't boot.
Please can you tell me how configure coreectly the BIOS or tell how to do.

    MS-6195 memory upgrade.
I have also tried using new PC100 256Mb memory and am getting nowhere.
The ones that I have bought are single sided, [8 chips on only one side]
and do not work with my motherboard, however, if I put them into another,
older PC, it shows up as 128Mb.
So I assume that the DIMM is working OK, and that the 'old' PC has a memory size limitation??
I have tried the same things as wbs and Grommit and got the same results.
So I assume that the answer is in getting older DIMMs, double sided with 8 chips on either side.
Does this seem to be about right???

  • Memory upgrade fail - Kernel panic after put old memories back

I People, this is my first post here and unfortunately is to report a problem, not to help friends.
I did an memory upgrade last weekend. After this, he will not boot normally, only in safe mode.
I discovered that they sent me 1333Mhz memories, and my mac (mid 2009) supports only 1066Mhz.
I put the old memories again, however I believe that the system did not recognize.
As you can see below, the system recognizes two modules:
    Memory Module: BANK 0/DIMM0, 4 GB, DDR3, 1067 MHz, 0x80CE, 0x4D34373142353237334448302D4348392020

    It is not true, I' using now 2 x 2GB, DDR3, 1067 Mhz (stock)
I tried to reinstall the system, but when I try, I got crash again.
how can I solve this issue?

    Hi BGreg,
I already reset the PRAM as you said.
I've cleaned the memory modules as indicated by Linc above.
Today I formatted my harddrive to try a clean install, but system crashs after 5%, 10%.
There is something making me worried:
In one of my tries, I opened the system view to check my actual hardware configuration, and to my surprise, the system shows me 8GB installed. Cannot be. I have 2 x 2GB.
Where my system stores this information? There is a way to reset it? I tried last hour install the snow leopard, that cames with my mac, by DVD, but does not worked too.
    Thank you all so far.
    Giuliano

  • Memory upgrade

    Hi,
    Can I install 2 x Crucial 4GB DDR3 - 1333 SODIMM 1.35V 204 PIN - CT51264BF1339J on a Macbook Pro 13 inch late 2011?
Currently, I have 4 GB (2 x 2 GB) and I want to upgrade to 8 GB. There is a controversial info regarding this particular memory module, some people say it is not compatible.
When I look to the specs I find:
204 PIN form factor = OK
    1,35 V = OK
    DDR3 = OK
    1333 = OK
    SODIMM = OK
    Max 8GB = OK (2 x 4GB)
Latency= 9 cicles (same that stock modules supplied with the laptop) OK
The thing is Crucial, sell an identical specs module that costs quite more. They claim it to be compatible with Mac. The also sell this one I mentioned as being not compatible. The funny thing is that specs for both are identical. I only find a difference on the pricing. So I am really confused.
Do they one to sell me a more expensive one like being specific for Mac or there is a hiden specification that makes the two modules to differ from each other?
Can somebody confirm this info to me, please?
    Many thanks in advance
    Best Regards

    News on this subject:
A Crucial support representative replied saying:
"Mac compatible memory is guaranteed to work in your specific system.  There may be subtle differences in non specific memory that will cause it not to work for you such as chip solution and the configurations of chips..."
Well, I find it very ambiguous technically speaking. If they sell good quality memory as they claim, I do not see which subtle differences will affect the functionality. The chip configuration is standard and chip solution is about quality. So Crucial should be all right as everyone claims (even if manufactured in China)
So I went a head and both 2 x CT51264BF1339J for a very reasonable Belgian price and installed it into my system just two minutes ago. I am writing this using the mentioned system.
I was on Google after 30 seconds of taping the On button. Although it did not changed a lot as this startup timing is more related to the Hybrid 750GB HDD (SSD + Conventional Drive) I upgraded few months ago.
I upgraded the memory to run Virtual Box and Parallel desktop more easily though it worked quite good with 4GB. I did not upgraded to 16GB because it is not necessary on my usage. Only one virtual machine at once + E-mail + Browser + some PDF opened. Some technical stuff and nothing like Photoshop or similar. Thus the huge money difference would have gone for nothing if I buy the specific Mac modules of 8GB each as "Crucial Memory Upgrade Tool" subjected me.

  • Memory upgrade not working

I ordered 8GB memory for my imac mid-2011 model.
I then tried to install and all I'm getting is three beeps telling me there's something wrong with my memory.
I've tried all configurations but can't get the 2x4gb modules to work.
I've had to stay with only the original 2x2gb ones it came with.
    Can anyone please help.
The only difference, besides the size, between the two modules is that on the 4gb ones is says PC3-10600S-9-10-F2 and the 2gb ones say all the same except instead of F2 at the end it's F1.
    Cheers.

Which would seem to suggest that you may (unusually) have a doubtful memory module.   Less unusually, you would have paid over the top for it.
Many people on these forums speak well of the following suppliers.
In North America contact OWC … Upgrade Apple iMac Memory
In Europe contact Crucial.com  … RAM Memory Upgrade
Both companies have facilities to guide you and will recommend the correct memory package to meet whatever needs you describe to them.
There may be benefits buying from your own geographical location insofar as Shipping charges, Local sales taxes and Exchange rates.  Check out the basic memory costs and do your sums next time you buy.

  • Memory upgrade on Satellite Pro L40-15d

    Hi
I have Satellite Pro L40-15d with 512 memory (Samsung) but I wont upgrade to 1GB. I have Kingston ktt667d2/1g I have tray to put in to both slots but nothing work I cant switch on computer.
But when I change for old one laptop is ok. What can I do? Install special program or update BIOS or maybe the memory stick is broken.
    Regards

    Hi
    The notebook doesnt boot after the memory upgrade due to these different issues;
    - memory modules are not compatible together
    - memory modules are not compatible with the notebook
    - memory modules are faulty
    - one of memory slots is faulty
In most case the memory module replacement helps.
One hint; did you try to switch the memory modules in the slots? Sometimes this helps.
Several weeks ago I have updated my memory and the notebook didnt boot.
I thought its a memory malfunction but after module switching the notebook booted correctly.
    Good luck

  • Memory upgrade on Satellite A50-104

I NEED TO FIND A 512MB MEMORY UPGRADE FOR MY A50/104 ANYONE NO THE CORRECT ONE TO BUY, I WAS TOLD ON EBAY THAT 512 DDR SODIMM IS THIS RIGHT. ALSO HOW DO I CHECK ON MY LAPTOP FOR THESE DETAILS IF THERE ARE ANY AND ANY OTHER SPEC BATTERY ,HARDDRIVE ETC

    Hi
You have several ways to find out what memory module is compatible and supported.
You can use a diagnostic too like Everest, you will check the user manual or the Toshiba website for details or you will contact the service in your country for supported modules.
I will try to answer the question: The Satellite A50 should support PC2700 DDR-RAM like these parts:
    PC2700 256MB (PA3311U-1M25)
    PC2700 512MB (PA3312U-1M51)
    PC2700 1024MB (PA3313U-1M1G)
Now its your choice. You can also google for the offers
By the way: Visit the Toshiba Options & accessories site. There you will find compatible parts
