  • Is this how dual boot works in Lenovo laptops?

I have a Z580 and I've succesfully installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS alongside Windows 8. Earlier I lost my paritions during Ubuntu install and so I had to do a clean install of Windows using the MSDN version and by using the product key retrieved using RWEverything tool.
    Here are my questions:
When I boot through Ubuntu there is a pause for almost 30 seconds with a blank screen before the Ubuntu startup screen comes up. Is that how it is or is there a way I can fix this?
When I boot Ubuntu boots well, but the Windows boot option doesn't appear in the Grub boot menu. But if I choose Windows boot option in the Boot Menu (by pressing the small button) Windows boots fine. Is this how it works on the Lenovo laptops? It's fine with me and in fact it's more desirable for me so that I can kinda hide Windows which I rarely use. But I'm curious to know if this is how it works and it's not related to the problem described in my first question.

I do not own the same machine, but I can make the following general observations:
Re: the 30 second pause, does that occur before or after the GRUB menu?
A Windows entry can be added to the Boot menu, which is contained in a config text file.
I don't know what you mean by pressing the small button to boot Windows.
My Lenovo laptop dual boots Linux and Windows (but not Ubuntu, and not Windows 8).  The total boot time to Linux is around 45-60 seconds on a regular HDD, and 17-30 seconds on SSD, including Grub.  Windows is about 45-90 seconds on HDD, 30 or so on SSD, including GRUB selection.  That time is from when I press the power button until the desktop is up and the computer is either connected or connecting to Wi-Fi.
Usually, a longer delay with my Lenovo machine is because of having USB drives attached during boot (though I'm not sure why this causes a delay) or because of updates being installed.
There are log files created during boot time that you could research and read if you wanted to know where each chunk of time is going.  I think they are under /var/log/boot or something like that.
    Hope this helps some, anyway.

  • Laptop stopped booting due to EFI boot device problems [SOLVED]

    Hi,
I'm writing this from my old laptop. My Lenovo U330 touch will not boot. When I turn it on it states that 'default boot device is missing or boot failed'. It used to go to gummiboot and there were Linux and Windows boot options.
I can boot from an Arch USB drive and chroot but when I try to reinstall gummiboot or grub I get errors:
    #gummiboot --path=$esp install
#failed to check filesystem type of install: No such file or directory
    # grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=$esp --bootloader-id=grub --recheck --debug
#grub install error failed to get canonical path of `'
On this laptop there are various partitions for EFI and a small Windows 8 partition.
I guess there is some problem with the $esp
It should be /dev/sda2 and / is dev/sda6. All seem to be present and correct with fdisk -l, however, for some reason there is a boot flag on /
I've tried to sort it out for a few hours now. Please if anyone can help that would be amazing.

This is a pretty ridiculous suggestion.  It may not be production ready and it may not be the best choice for the user, but it has nothing to do with the problem at hand.
    @OP, are you literally typing:
    gummiboot --path=$esp install
If so, $esp is a variable.  So in your case you would need to set esp=/boot.  But gummiboot's default --path for install is actually /boot.  So you should only need to do:
    gummiboot install

  • U530 boot failed

I have a Lenovo U530 laptop that intermittently encounters a 'boot failed' error.
This has happened 6 times in a 4 month period. Each time it has occurred I have clicked
through the following 5 screens until it requested a system restart:
      1. EFI Network 0 for IPv4 (08-9E-01-F5-44-D4)  boot failed. [Ok]
      2. EFI Network 0 for IPv6 (08-9E-01-F5-44-D4)  boot failed. [Ok]
      3. Default Boot Device Missing or Boot Failed.
Insert Recovery Media and HIT any key
Then Select 'Boot Manager' to choose a new Boot          [Ok]
Device or to Boot Recovery Media
      4. Boot Manager
         Boot Option Menu
EFI Network 0 for IPv4 (08-9E-01-F5-44-D4)  boot failed. (this line is selected)
EFI Network 0 for IPv6 (08-9E-01-F5-44-D4)  boot failed. [Ok]
^ and v to change option, ENTER to select an option
      5. EFI Network 0 for IPv4 (08-9E-01-F5-44-D4)  boot failed. [Ok]
Screen 6: No bootable device -- Please restart system
At this point I power off, then on via the power switch and it boots normally.
I am aware of the suggestions to boot from a recovery drive but that is not my problem.
I am able to successfully boot by powering off/on.
I would like to figure out what is causing this. Any suggestions on what steps to take
to diagnose this the next time it occurs?
Lenovo phone support has been of no help.
    TIA
    Luke

If you are not connecting to a lan at boot up try to disable "PXE boot to Lan" in the bios. Else temporarily disable it. Once booted try running in command prompt with admin rights "sfc /scannow". Do not include the quotation mark. You might also try running chkdsk to check the hdd for defects.

  • Satellite A660 - Will not boot up and HDD boot fail

    Hi,
    firstly thanks for your time.
    Model: Satellite A660 (PSAW3A-07U00R)
The problem started yesterday, the computer was going slow as an application closed, so I held the off button untill the pc turned off. When I restarded the laptop it went to a screen saying: Start windows normally or repair Windows (recomended)
When started normally it just hangs at a blank screen, the repair Windows recommends a system restore to earlier point which didnt work. As it just hangs again. I tried pressing F8 and starting in safe mode but again it just hangs. Then after a few times trying safe mode and another system restore the computer then hangs when I press F8. After this the computer goes past the Toshiba logo screen with F2 and F12 options (which both still work), and then it comes up boot failed then goes blank and comes with boot failed bootfailed with some numbers and letters, then it goes to a small box titled boot menu with 4 options. These are
    HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX
    CD/DVD MAT****ABD-CMB UJ141ES
    FDD
    LAN
If I press ESC it goes through the bootfailed loop and ends up at same screen, if I press enter on "HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX" then it quickly comes back to screen and at the bottom it says [HDD/SSD Toshiba MK6465GSX] is failed.
I dont understand why it got worse over time. Can anyone think of why this has happend and more importantly how can I get my pc working again? Note: holding 0 then starting does nothing for me atm
    regards, Matthew

All you people looking here on this dead thread.....
Toshiba A660 laptops are renowned for having hard drive fails and boot up problems after grinding to a halt.
My solution (after losing 3 hard drives [and a terabyte of family treasured times]) is the following.
Use MALWAREBYTES (free download and use for 28 days)
Scan and fix. Mine found over 300 trojans that 2013 Norton 360 could not find.
    Re-boot into safe mode.
    SCAN again.
Re-boot and empty the malwarebytes repair files it retains...
Run Norton/McAfee (whichever you have) and you should still have no issues.
    Make a back-up repair disc. Ooooops......no you cant...........at least my laptop can`t.
    I don`t know why.....
Tell me tosh..... why does windows x64 refuse to allow me to make a system boot disc (even though the laptop is all driver updated and Windows updated)?
Uninstall MalwareBytes when Norton/McAfee tells you there will be a conflict between the two programs.
It tells you to re-boot after uninstalling it.
Then when it re-boots you get a black screen. You cannot even get to bios. You think ytour laptop is turned into a brick frisbee. You pull out the battery in frustration after five minutes.
You replace and re-boot....but again you get no bios or boot up.... you think its destroyed the Bios or graphics somehow....youo can hear the hard-drive but you have no clue whats going on..
Around this time you shake the laptop in frustration.....
    Calm down.
Switch on and leave FIFTEEN MINUTES....Ten of which will be a Black nothing screen with maybe a single white underscore line in the top left corner.LEAVE IT ALONE.
Make a sunday dinner for ten people....When you go back to the computer it will be up and running.
When you re-boot again, it will be dead black for five minutes...then boots up... you still think it has a problem... LEAVE IT.
When you reboot again it should work perfect (assuming you have not been overheating it by using it on a cushion on your lap and overheating the insides [use a laptop fan tray]) if you have not shaken your hard drive or caused scrambled damage by pulling the power fifty times like some people do.
I have lost three hard drives and thousands of Gigabytes of treasured family memories discovering the secret the hard way.
    Enjoy.
Buy a different brand next time.
ALL Windows system files should be on a SWITCHED (to update) version of Windows.
Spinning drives should be for Data only.

  • Diskless client NFS boot fails. cannot create /dev/nfs

    Hi
I've set up a diskless laptop to boot off my server, both running Arch. I followed the wiki article: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Di … t_NFS_root
PXE on the laptop connects with the tftpd server just fine, gets the kernel and begins booting up. At some point it begins looking for /dev/nfs, declares it does not exist, attempts to create it and and fails with the following error (from memory as I'm not at the computer now).
"ERROR: Unable to determine major/minor number of root device root=/dev/nfs"
my kernel param line in pxelinux.cfg/default is just like the one in the wiki article i.e
    default linux
    label linux
    kernel vmlinuz26
    append initrd=kernel26.img rootfstype=nfs root=/dev/nfs nfsroot=10.0.0.1:/disklessroot,v3,rsize=16384,wsize=16384 ip=::::::dhcp
any help will be greatly appreciated.
    emk

I'm assuming youve entered your own IP addresses instead of just copy&pasting from the howto, correct?
Also, did you install all the nfs packages, and do the mkinitcpio-nfs-utils procedure?

Click on what used to be the "Start" button and search for "create" or "recovery". It took me a while to find it but it is there.

I would suggest leaving it as Windows 8.1 - Any attempt to install another OS will wipe out the factory partitions and invalidate the OEM licnese for the OS tree.  Windows 10 may not install to your old Windows 7 as the EULA prohibits installing retail versions on more than one device.  Also - you will not be able to re-install or go "back" to Windows 8.1 factory installation if you have not created the restore disks.

What is the error message (exactly as possible) that you are seeing when it turns on?  What you are describing sounds like hard disk failure, but will not no for sure until more informatoin is posted.
Please list the following - as much detail as possible:
    Machine Model (not serial)
Error codes, warning or other messages
Will machine boot into safe mode

  • Lenovo 3000 Y500 Booting problems

    Hey Everyone,
Two days back I have tried to install Ubuntu onto my lenovo 3000 y500  Intel Celeron M 1.73 Ghz, 512 MB ram and Hitachi HTS541612J9SA00-S1 120Gb SATA HDD.During the installation something went wrong and the booting could not be completed from the live cd.After I rebooted the BIOS screen (with Lenovo logo) is getting displayed and the system is continously restarting. The OS boot screen is not loading.
Out of curiosity I had removed my hard drive and tried to boot the system with no hard drive through a live cd and it booted for sometime and it hung.I had also connected my hdd to another desktop and tried to install ubuntu on it and the installation worked fine and the desktop booted with ubuntu installed on it.
To check my motherboard I used a similar hard drive from an other y500 series laptop and booted the system succesfully. So the motherboard was working fine.
As a final desperate attempt I had downloaded a BIOS update (thinking that it is a BIOS problem) for Lenovo 3000 N100 and flashed my bios with it.Then the system booted fine with my hdd (with ubuntu on it) but my no hardware was being detected correctly.SO i restored my old bios back and the problem continues.
Kindly let me know if there is any BIOS update for Lenovo 3000 Y500 that can rectify this problem. My current BIOS is Phoenix trusted core version 2.04.Kindly suggest any other reasons that might cause this problem
    Thank you

Three days back I have tried to install Ubuntu onto my lenovo 3000 y500  Intel Celeron M 1.73 Ghz, 512 MB ram and Hitachi 80 gb SATA HDD.During the installation something went wrong and the booting could not be completed from the live cd.After I rebooted the BIOS screen (with Lenovo logo) is getting displayed and the system is continously restarting. The OS boot screen is not loading.
