  • Lenovo S10-2 won't start. Help!

    Hello All!
Have a problem with my wife's Lenovo S10-2. Yesterday, after a 8-10 hours of netbook's inactivity (w/o heavy tasks), I found it deadly hanged. I turned it off by pressing a Power button by ~5 secs.
After turning on again, I see only blank screen with non-blinking cursor at top-left corner. No Lenovo's splash screen, no beeps, no reaction on F2 or other keys. It's still can be powered off by pressing Power for 5 secs.
Note: the cooler starts up with power on, but stops at same time as the blank screen with cursor appears.
Removing HDD and GSM card did not bring any effect.  W/o RAM, netbook also doesn't say any beeps, but the screen is all black, with no backlight.
Tried to clear CMOS by removing a battery, power cord and pressing Power by 60 secs. No changes at all.
I also tried to enter BIOS recovery mode by pressing Fn-B while connecting power cord w/o battery. It starts with cooler working constantly, black screen (as described), but still no beeps. No SD or USB activity too -> no BIOS ROM search on external media.
The cursor is not blinking, does it mean anything? Could it be hanged by overheating in 2-3 seconds after power on?
I saw similar problems ten years ago with Intel Celeron 600, which halted after 8-10 seconds after powering on, because there were no thermal grease on CPU at all.
Any suggestions? What should I check?
P.S. Sorry for bad English, that's not my native language)

    hi cdf.
i don't have s10-2 but as i remember it comes with soldered and another ram stick. it usually happens when the soldered ram is out of order but not sure what your problem really is.
still, whatever your issue is you will need hardware support cause you tried all of the suggestions that i may suggest. if you have valid warranty, contact lenovo support line for possible mainboard replacement.
    hope this helps.

  • Lenovo S10-3 Fan Control (Linux) and overheating

    Good day to everyone.
Let me describe the situation. My Lenovo S10-3 is always hot (even in idle) and uses internal fan very often. It irritates very much because fan is noisy (service found no problem).
    Sensors: acpi-tz ~60C, core ~50C (idle).
But even fan is disabled (connector is pulled out from motherboard) temperature becomes not much higher --- approx 65-70C.
Now, the question: is there any way to override BIOS fan control values? (e.g. 55C="Fan on" to 60C="Fan On")
For the S10 series there is program named "Fan Control", but it doesn't work on S10-3 and this program is for MS Windows only. Can anyone give comprehensive ansver/guide how to control fan speed (or on/off temperature values) using native linux tools or special program? It might be very useful for others who experiences the same problem. Thanks.

The heatsink is not connected to the surface of CPU and GPU and this is why you said that disabling the fan doesn't make any difference in the temperature. There are two pieces of thermal pad on the CPU and GPU.They are actually unusable. Remove them. Put thermal paste on the surface of CPU and GPU and heatsink and then put a piece of copper on CPU and GPU. This will make connection between heatsink and surface of CPU. This will make the fan usefull . Do this at your own risk (There is no risk. But use suitable pieces of copper is very important.) Using google will help you find about this issue

  • Lenovo s10-2 won't detect camera

Hello, I've had my lenovo s10-2 for a couple of months and the camera was working fine and then it stopped working it. It does not detect it any more. Any advice?
I have windows XP home edition and SP2

A family member of mine has the same problem on his S-10.  I've been researching the dickens out of this.
Finally determined that if I opened the lid (display) about half way, the camera would be found and connected as if I plugged it in to the USB.  Camera worked too.
I took the unit apart and found the very fine wires bound in a woven sheathing that connect the USB camera to system board go right past the hinge in a somewhat precarious way.  And with enough opening and closing the display they apparently frey as I believe has happened in this case and ultimately break.
Note part #4 in this picture.  This camera cable "44C9901" would need to be replaced.

Unless you have experience with laptop repair and/or are certified with Lenovo devices, I would not recommend you try to repair this yourself.
This S10 is not much beyond a year old.  It is used opened/closed and used multiple times daily.  Bottom line.  The design isn't what it should be.

  • S10 Loads Bios then Stops, have to Hit Any Key to Load Windows XP

I have a Lenovo S10, after powering on, the just loads the bios screen of LENOVO.  With the F2 & F12 at the bottom of the screen.  If you press F2 to setup & F12 to Boot Menu, it will do so.
When you press other keys, it will then load windows xp.
In the Boot Order, I already put the HDD on top (the first) but you have to hit any key for Windows to load.
    Why?
Also, flashed the bios to version 14CN94WW.  But did not help.
    Suggestions?  Assistance?

Hi and welcome to lenovo forum,
to exclude BIOS ... go in BIOS and press F9 to setup defaults....
set in Config page quickstart disabled and Beep disabled
     F10 and exit
unplug PSU and Battery press 30seconds switch On Button ...
Then plug PSU and Battery in ... press Switch On ... if this wait behavior is gone...OK if not ... it could something to do with harddrive ... easy if you have another harddrive to check this , if not save your data and work on other media and recover to factory condition...
overal there is no wait for key in BIOS should boot straight forward into OS without that press any key ...

  • Installing XP Pro on Lenovo S10-2

    Hello.
I have the full legal version of XP Pro and I am having issues installing this on my new Lenovo S10-2.
I have the regular CD (Orig XP - no Service Packs) as well as XP Pro with SP3 slipstreamed into it.
It will not install either of these....  I have tried installed from external CD-Rom's and USB Stick.
I do IT work and I am having issues... so I asked my company's IT dept to have a look -
This is the email from them:
"Wednesday, July 22, 2009 6:03:43 PM by IT Dept:
Used the external DVD writer as a CD drive to load WinXP pro.
Netbook saw the drive & got started but stopped at blue screen of death before reaching the 1st navigation screen.
Tried dumbing down the drive with a plain CD-ROM drive on a tether & got the same result.
Tried launching an upgrade from Windows already on the netbook & make some progress, but as soon is it rebooted, it could not continue & had a "drive read error".
Tried turning the resident O/S back from SP3 to SP2 & tried my WinXP install CD but got a similar result.
Fellow IT's brother is a superior tech who has some practical experience with netbooks.
His first recommendation coincided with what the blue screen said: scan for infections & run CheckDisk.
    He recommended MbAm.
Slaved HDD to STtest & swept with MbAm: nothing found.
Ran chkdsk.exe & also did well.
He scanned some forums & found that Microsoft has gone out of their way to make sure netbooks could not be upgraded.
Gave up on it & informed user."
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions please?
I have to have XP Pro to be able to use this on my companies network.
    Thanks so much!
    Sam

Hi,  thanks for more information about that ..
in BIOS is Configuration page SATA Controller working mode the only user setting from Compatible & AHCI....
i never changed this, cause on my S10e i could install everything without any change...
The only one thing i do not with windows itself is partition & formating with acronis Diskmanager before install,
i delete all exitsting partitions & repartitioned given minimum 20- 30 GB active NTFS & the rest 120 GB logic for data & room for backup with acronis trueimage...
i never do this with windows itself.....
..you says ...the only menu option gives you 32GB is strange, whole harddrive must be 149,05 GigaByte  =160 GB...
if harddrive could be never partitioned, even with other computer... the harddrive have a faulty or wrong firmware...
try in BIOS F9 for setup defaults and then these AHCI & Compatible settings in BIOS ... (AHCI is default)
i always have 2 or more other harddrives (the one i used as provingground  for all new scenarios is the little 160 GB   )... at last option  i would try other harddrive (fresh or complete unpartition)...
    sincerely KalvinKlein.   .

  • Does the S10 support BIOS tracking such as Computrace (lojack for laptops)

Computrace apparently has partners with many manufacturers, including Lenovo.  Does the S10 support BIOS installation, or will I be limited to a software only install?

Ah yea, now I see where it could have been confusing.  Computrace is also known as "lowjackforlaptops' and is the same company as the link you posted, absolute.com.  Actually, I think computrace is its previous name.  After some research, I think it may be one of the best solutions.  Only issue is, I think that for the PC version, all it really does is log IP addresses, which can be accomplished with some free software, such as "Locate PC".  I suppose 1 good advantage to computrade/absolute.com is that they handle all the investigation and warrant requests, which is a nice touch.
Back to "Locate PC".  It's free, runs silently, and emails you (via smtp server) each time the IP changes on the computer that it is installed on.  I installed it last night and it has successfully emailed me each of the 3 times I relocated to a new location (new IP address).  I am not sure absolute.com does much more than this.

  • Lenovo S10 broken cover at hinge. Poor design !!

I have the Lenovo s10 and the cover just happened to break from closing it .
I have seen many other pictures here with the same problem.  now I need to look for new parts to fix this .
My w500 is a nice laptop this S10 is built way to cheap.  Very dissapointed with mechanical flaws next time I will look at Dell or Asus.

    welcome to the forum!
that's rather unfortunate.   if you're still under warranty then this can be fixed by service.
if your system is out of warranty or you want to repair it on your own then you can find new hinges for the S10 here: http://www.lenovospareparts.com/All_c_108-2-0.html   part numbers 31035691 (right) or 31035692 (left) are what you'd need.

  • Lenovo S10 crash

Well, i am using a Lenovo S10 with upgraded ram to 2048 megabytes.
I recently installed veriface software.  Everything went downhill fast from there.  After i installed it, XP started crashing everywhere(you could see a flash of the blue screen before it almost instantaneously powers down). Then, on top of that, Linux mint started to crash as well.  So, i decided to format my computer  using a live cd of ubuntu to get to the partition editor (saving my documents folder of course )  After i formatted everything, i ran XP and it loaded all files fine until it said it was loading the installer.  From here it hangs on the blue screen until I turn the thing off.  After much pain, i finally got ubuntu to actually install.  It ran fine for a little while and then it started to crash violently as well.  Programs run and sometimes load before they quit.  It crashes completely if the program does not quit automatically.
I think it might be because veriface was a 64 bit program running on a 32 bit machine. I think it is hardware related now. I ran a disk check before i actually installed ubuntu and it found 1 "bad" file.  I just need a way to end the crashing and be able to run an OS without it kicking the bucket.  I cannot do much on the actual computer due to the frequent crashing.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Solved!

    I agree with hpholm
the symptom of your described crashes
is your memoryupgrade is the faulty ...
i bet you can easily install all systems xp,mint, ubuntu with the onboard 512 mb memory .. without any fault...
when you plug in the extra memory 2GB stick, the system will crash...
i prefer a  corsair memory 2GB 667 MHz ...for the lenovo s series

  • S10-3T BIOS bug?

We have purchased four Lenovo S10-3T (product code ********, greek version) and all four have the same problem:
Out of the box and on first boot, two BIOS issues appear:
ERROR 271Check Date and Time setting
WARNING 251 System CMOS checksum bad - Default configuration used
When you hit F2 to setup, a password is required  - although no password has been set. A blank password doesn't work.
When you exit the setup (without entering the actual settings due to the password protection) , Windows first time setup continues with installation and creation of user account etc.
When I retry to enter BIOS Setup, the password prompt always appears.
Also have a look below at the screenshot.
Is it a BIOS bug which enables a supervisor password, or maybe a backup battery issue?

  • Lenovo S10-3t Part of the touchscreen not Working

    Hi,

I tried calibrating and resetting the calibration data, but no success in getting the touch screen working correctly. Then I reinstalled the intel graphics drivers. The touch screen started working correctly. After  one day the issue has resurfaced. Have no idea what is wrong. (to depit the dehaviour I have added a paint screenhot, the area highlighted with red oval, is where touch screen is not working)

  • PhotoShop 5 organizer startup on a Lenovo S10 netbook incorrectly blocked

I installed PSE5 on a new Lenovo S10 netbook which has a 1024x600 resolution screen.
Startup of Organizer is blocked by an PSE5 dialog box that states "VGA resolution is required". Ok, VGA is 640x480, so why should this error appear on startup with a 1024x600 display?
If I switch my netbook display to an external monitor of 1024x768 res PSE5 starts without the error. Then I can switch the current display back to the netbook and it works fine.
So Adobe, is there a patch or workaround that will let me start PSE5 on a 1024x600 resolution display? Netbooks are quickly starting to capture the low end of the notebook market, and an increasing number of netbook customers will run into this artifical PSE5 limitation. While I don't expect to be doing heavy duty photo editing from a netbook, the ability or use the organize (view, tag, delete etc.) is desirable.
    Chris

Chris, the minimum resolution for PSE 5.0 is 1024 x 768 - there is no
work around. You will have dialogs and other windows cut off if you run
    at a lower resolution.

  • New Lenovo S10 Model Info Please

I would like to know when the new model of the S10 series will be released, i found this article on Cnet.com http://ces.cnet.com/8301-19167_1-10130797-100.html?tag=mncol;title and i wanted to know when these features would be avalible, or if they are already avalible but just not listed on the website. The features are the new splashtop or quickstart OS and the veriface security program. Any information woule be great, i am very egar to get my Lenovo S10 netbook and have been waiting a very long time for these features to come out. And if there is something newer that is going to come out hardware or software wise, could anyone who knows please say so here. i want to get the newest version of the netbook that i can.
    Thank you!

my S10e also included both.. but i think veriface is just a marketing hype as its nearly useless..
