Lenovo support has become very poor (long post at least until they delete it because it's truth)

Quite honestly,  I wouldn't be suprised if they delete this post,  but hopefully some people will get to read it before it is.
I have been a big fan of the ThinkPad brand computer for as long as it existed.   I work in Computer Networking and Security.   Lenovo has always offered quality products at an affordable price.   Until I ran into a problem that occured in November, 2011 when I purchased 30 Lenovo Thinkpad E420's for my customers.
Every single one of them fried out within 4-5 months.  While back then,  trying to use my warranty,  I was bounced back and forth from Office Depot and Lenovo untill I had to just bite the bullet and purchase relpacements myself for my customers (I bought a different brand).  And frankly,  I will never buy another Lenovo product again, after recommending them to thousands of people over the years until this all happened. By the time I finally got someone that offered the warantty,   they told me it was no lonver valid.  Yes.  It took over 6 months of calling Office Depot / Lenovo back and forth until I finally reached someone (which happened to be RIGHT after the warranties ended......)
Now,  2 years later,  I received letters from Office Depot that this particular brand and battery were being recalled.  ALL of the computer's ID numbers and the Battery numbers matched what was listed as "qualified for replacement".   I went to Office Depot and was denied,  telling me to contact Lenovo.   I went to the website Lenovo suggested and filled in the information for all 20 broken computers (I kept them around in case I needed spare parts which never did because according to the governmental recall,  these defective  batteries can cause damage to the BIOS / Motherboard / and Power supply).
All of my computers were rejected by their fill in form.  When I called tech support,  I was transfered to four different departments,  each saying that "Whatever the website said is the final word and we cannot help you,  but let me transfer you to someone that maybe can assist you".  only to get transfered to 5 people who told me that they don't know why I were transfered to them, then  make the same suggestions,  and then transfered me off to another person that is equaly as confused as why I was transfered to their department. As shampoo says,  Rinse Lather Repeat for 2 hours.
This isn't meant to be a rant.  This is to explain how poor their customer service is,  that they basically told me oh well,  buy a new one of our products since that one doesn't qualify.   This is a company that just lost a power buyer whom has purchased counteless Lenovo Think Pad's over a long period of time,  and they treated me like a grandmother that wondered why they had so many toolbar's on their screen.
I highly suggest you avoid their products.  Again,  by the time I finally got to any stage of my "warranty" with either Office Depot or Lenovo,  it was too late.   Then,  with this governmental issued recall,  all of the computers I had in storage did not qualify (even though they were the exact brand / year / and battery that was "qualified".
So,  consider this just a warning on how Lenovo now operates.   I had 20 computers that by the time I was ping-ponged back and forth between their distributer (Office Depot) and their company,  with each repeating "you have to contact the other",  until it had been so long that my warantees finally expired.  Now with the governmental battery recall,  I ran into the exact same thing.
Since their automated "check if your computer qualifies section" said NONE of them qualify,  I now have 20 nice paperweights that costed my business quite a bit of money, to the point where I gave up on the Computer Business and went to work for the government.
I used to recommend Lenovo products to my customers and to my clients,  and will never do so again.   It is such a pity that they bought the Think Pad brand,  because many of my smaller clients prefered the little 'eraser' style mouse vs the multi touch pad.  So be warned people.  They are cheap computers for a reason,  and that reason isn't because they pride themselves on quality service.   Honestly,  I would have forgotten about this until I got the letter saying that these computers had governmental issued recalls on the batteries.   But I find it quite strange that all of the computers died at about the same time,  all were the make and model that was recalled,   but NONE qualified for the battery.
And good luck getting your warranty if your computer breaks during the warranty period.  Plus,  if you think this is just an anger rant,  rather than just the truth,  search reviews on Lenovo products.   Most reviewers throw in the joke that "You'd be better off buying an eMachine,  at least you know you're getting a piece of junk"
Sincerely,

Kevin,
Understandably you seem really frustrated.   I can sympathize with your summation of the run around you have experienced but without specifics, it is difficult to arrange assistance on your behalf.
The battery recall is for safety, and the automated tool querries the batteries to see if specific ones are affected.   It is possible that your batteries may have worn down over time, but not been flagged as inherently unsafe.   If you have a sample of 20 or 40 units, and they were built nearly in sequence then it is possible that they are not affected.
Serene likely asked you for customer contact and type and serial information for at least one of your systems as required to escalate your case.   I understand it is frustrating to have already provided this elsewhere to the company.

  • My Mac has become very slow.  Will factory reseting it and deleting some unused files make it faster?

im trying to increase the speed of my mac because it keeps freezing and has forced a shut down... will reseting it increase the speed?

    Most likely yes.
20: Zero Erase and Fresh install OS X (advanced)
Warning: permanent data destruction on the entire drive or partition selected. No recovery possible. All programs, files and operating system gone.
Wipes everything method. Everything erased, the hard drive bad sectors mapped off, everything new except files from storage drive, no clone or TM restores unless you know it's not corrupted.
This method is reserved for hard drives that the file structure has gone bad, pinwheel issues that isn't resolved by any other manner (bad sectors), malware, corrupted EFI or anything super serious that Disk Utility gives and unable to repair the drive.
The methods are the same as #8 Reinstall Just OS X, however before you install OS X again, you first select Disk Utility and the drive or partition and
On 10.6: Erase > Security Option > Zero All Data, then click Erase.
On 10.7: Zero Erase is one selection from the right, then click Erase.
It's going to take some time, when finished, one installs OS X  and then go about installing programs and returning files from backup, or restoring from a clone or TimeMachine drive.
Note: SSD's boot drives don't have a Secure Erase function, only Erase.
10.7+ you may have to create a 10.7 Recovery USB to catch the entire drive.
Your basically booting from the Recovery HD partition which is on the same drive as MacIntosh HD or BootCamp, so your erasing one partition from another on the same drive.
However some people's drive problems extend outside the MacIntosh HD and BootCamp, into the hidden Recovery, HD, EFI or GUID partition map, therefore the only solution is to erase the ENTIRE from a outside source. If you can boot into OS X you should try to make this bootable Recovery USB, you may need to use another Mac to copy that Recovery HD.
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/08/lion-recovery-disk-assistant-tool-makes-external- lion-boot-recovery-drives/
If you can boot into only Recovery HD, then your should create this and later can use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone back onto the internal drive after the drive has been completely erased to catch all partitions, hidden and otherwise.
Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive
Newer Mac's have Internet Recovery which one can boot and use just like Recovery HD, it's downloaded off the Internet and can be used to erase the drive in it's entirety as well.

  • My internet has become very slow on Macbook Pro

I don't know what happened but since few days my internet has become very slow on all sites It takes ages for a youtube video to be played. I sometimes to refresh a page for it to appear.
Safari, Firefox and Chrome all 3 have become very slow.
I tried changing my wireless internet 3 times but all the time it is slow.
I have had my laptop for more than 3 years now.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Mac book pro has become very slow. How to analyze this and resolve this?

My mac book pro has become very slow. How to analyze and resolve this?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Pages on my iPad3 has become very slow to open documents after upgrading to ios7. I've clicked on a folder 5 minutes ago and am still waiting. The work-around seems to be to force-close it, but I've needed to do this many times in the last few days.

Pages on my iPad3 has become very slow to open documents after upgrading to ios7.
I posted on here about this a few weeks back and someone suggested force-closing Pages -- and that does indeed enable me to open things -- but I have had to force-close many times in the last 24 hours, which is worrying. Are there any other suggestions?
I am sometimes also finding that, when I have been writing something and then click on "documents" the screen goes blank, there is a wait of around a minute and then the same document is re-displayed, before clicking "documents" again lets me look at other documents -- which is a pain if I am trying to move between documents repeatedly. Again, words of wisdom on this would be great.
Pages under iOS6 opened quickly, and there was an immediate loss of performance when I upgraded. I am finding this very frustrating because I don't feel that the new Pages has added to the facilities I was using, but a slowness to open documents is frustrating.
    Thanks

Whilst using photoshop on my iMac it has become very hot is this normal

What iMac model do you have and what version of the Mac OS is it running? Doing "About this Mac" from your Apple menu is a good start. Its first window looks like this:
Note the two lines I've highlighted with the red arrows; post what they display on your computer.
Different iMac models have different heat tolerences and heat management options, so we can better help you if we have those two bits of information

  • IMac has become very slow

    Dear all,
My iMac (purchased in 2010) has become very slow. The response time of programs is slow as well as the start up process. I have upgraded the system to OS Mountain Lion when it was available (I've prechecked my system before wethever it is strong enough, and it was).
I have done OS software updates and as well restarts. But I am facing still the same issue. While surfing with Safari or using Office, the response time is long (the cursor becomes a rainbow-color-circle)....
During the time I have installed Norton by Symantec as a protection... don't know if that has any influence, too...
Any ideas how what the issue might be and how can i solve this?
    Thank you very much.
    Regards,
    Lucien

Remove the Norton/Symantec product by following the instructions on either of these pages:
Uninstalling your Norton product for Mac
    Removing Symantec programs for Macintosh
If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different. Back up all data before making any changes.

  • My MBA has become very slow, any ideas?

I have a MacBook Air and recently it has become very slow. I have removed any large files and cleared trash etc! Safari is very slow and loading apps and programmes (numbers/pages) is also very slow.

    Thanks.
Read and follow these Apple Knowledgebase guides in the order shown, to help determine what the cause might be. If nothing helps, please post a new question with your findings, explain the troubleshooting steps you took and their results, and be sure to include your system information (e.g. OS X 10.6.8 and MacBookAir3,1).

An SMC Reset might be justified, in the event you still experience inexplicably slow system performance.
Reset the SMC, then test your MacBook Air again.
    SMC reset:
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • After downloading OS X Mountain Lion, my mac has become very slow

After downloading OS X Mountain Lion, my mac has become very slow and takes a bit to shut down programmes. What can i do to bring it back up to the speed it was when i had OS X Lion

Though I wish it were true, it is unrealistic to put 200+ new features into OS X and expect Mountain Lion to run faster and more efficient than Lion on the same hardware. I moved up from Lion to Mountain Lion. Mine is slowing down, but not very slow, as you mentioned. Safari and Mail are simply swine on launch. Check the following:
Patience. If you are impatient and detail alters your mood, take your MBP to the Apple Genius bar.
CPU. If you have a supported, but older MBP, your CPU may be showing its age.
Memory. 4GB or 8GB in your MBP? Mountain Lion drinks more than Lion and if you run multiple large memory footprint applications, 4GB will be a performance bottleneck. My HD3000 graphics takes 512MB. Check the System Information report for your memory. Is it OK?
Compatibility. Sometimes, hardware peripherals and applications are not entirely compatible with a new OS release, and divert OS performance to system log entries. A symptom is a large (> 2GB) system log file at /var/log/system.log. I just discovered a bad USB hub this way. Unplug everything and evaluate your performance again. Zero [ # > /var/log/system.log] the log file if you have the permissions.
Permissions. Launch Disk Utility and verify/repair Disk Permissions on your Mountain Lion disk. While there, might as well Verify Disk too.
Preferences. Sometimes, older preferences do not play well with upgraded application compatibility for a new OS release. It might be worthwhile to delete the specific preference and its lock file from Lion.
Caches. As routine, just before I shutdown the system, I will move the contents of /Users/name/Library/Caches to the Trash. I tolerate Adobe Flash and use their preferences panel to delete all Flash content. Then on reboot, I delete the Trash. Application performance improves as a result.
File Directory. Everytime that I upgrade OS X and run the retail Disk Warrior 4.4, it reports 25% storage fragmentation. Repairing and rebuilding the File Directory always restores noticeable I/O performance.
Storage. If within your budget, upgrade to an SSD. Otherworld Computing has MBP SSD solutions.
Applications. Some non-Apple applications may need recompilation for Mountain Lion, or behavior may be questionable. I compile my own MacVim editor from github sources. The same 64-bit binary that was compiled with XCode 4.3 on Lion, misbehaved on Mountain Lion. Rebuilt it with XCode 4.4 and worked fine.

  • My iPad 1 has become very sluggish, why and  how to fix?

My iPad 1 has become very sluggish. Even typing often has small delays in showing letters. It seems variable, alas, so no obvious app or condition is implicated. I have closed all apps and done a cold restart but that does not help. I have the latest OS updates. Would pruning my photo library help - I usually add photos directly from my cameras and have quite a few, and they are large files.
    Thanks,
    Tom

Mail has become very, very slow.  Do I have a provider problem or is there something I can do with my Mac?

Couple of steps. One is general housekeeping and the other is performance related.
If you have an extremely large number of messages in your inbox(es) or sent categories, consider the ones that remain relevant and purge those that are not. Do this regularly. Choose the Mailbox > Erase Deleted Items > In All Accounts...
Afterwards, you can start by rebuilding your Mailbox indexes within your individual mail accounts. For each Account in the left panel of Mail under Inbox, select it, and then from Mailbox menu, choose Rebuild (bottom of menu). When you are done, exit and restart Mail.
    Still slow?
