Lenovo T430 suspend issue (systemd-sleep)

On my Lenovo T430, I'm having a problem with suspend. I use the Gnome3 Suspend option from the menubar. Suspend works successfully only about 50% of the time. When it doesn't work, the screen goes blank and the power button starts a fast blink. The only option then is a hard reboot (long press the power button).
I haven't been able to identify a consistent way to reproduce the problem. Doesn't seem to be related to battery or charging state. Also, doesn't seem to be related to the current running apps.
Here are the last entries from journalctl just before the hard reboot...
Sep 11 09:33:19 mylaptop systemd[1]: Starting Sleep.
Sep 11 09:33:19 mylaptop systemd[1]: Reached target Sleep.
Sep 11 09:33:19 mylaptop systemd[1]: Starting Suspend...

Where else should I be looking for error messages?

Hi linhe43,
What operating system are you using?
Which WLAN card do you have?
Are your drivers updated?
Are you using the driver from the Lenovo site or intel site?
Unfortunately, as erceve said, there is no definite fix.
You have to play around with the options to see what combination works.
Here are a few forum threads I've been working on that detail different methods of how to fix the issue.

  • Lenovo T430 unable to print to Officejet 8625 overwireless

After trying each and every method to resolve this myself without success, reaching out to the forums.
My Lenovo T430 ThinkPad is on a wireless network which my printer is on.  The printer is detected by the HP Doctor software.
However, no matter what I do - uninstall and reinstall the software, shutdown and restart the network / printer / laptop, using HP Scan Doctor etc. - I am unable to print to the printer.
Any ideas on how to proceed here? I'm almost at the point that I'm ready to repack the printer and return it...
    Thanks.

    Hi @Nexus007 ,
I'd like to help you with setup the printer over the wireless network.
Power cycle the router, restart the computer and the printer.
Print a configuration page to get the printer's IPv4 address.
    Printing a Network Configuration Page.
Try and access the Embedded Web Server for the printer.
Type the IP address into your web browser's address bar. (Internet Explorer)
    Did it load the page?
Find out what the computer is showing for the printer's IP by doing the following:
Go to Start, Devices and Printers, right click the printer, go to Printer Properties, select Ports tab, click Configure Port.
If they don't match then close the configure port window and click Create a Port and follow the wizard.
Type in the proper IPv4 address.
Make sure the printer is online.
    Did they match?
    Try and ping the printer.
In the same window, type ping printers IP address (space between ping and IP address)
    What are the results?
If you are having any issues with the IPv4 address assigned to the printer, restore the printer defaults and run the Wireless Setup Wizard on the printer.
Touch the Setup icon (). The Setup Menu screen displays.
Touch Network, touch Wireless Setup Wizard.
Then go to Start, All Programs, HP, Officejet 8625, then Setup
Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your printer, and then click the icon for your printer. The printer software opens.
Click Printer Setup & Software Selection.
Click Connect a new printer .
    Test the printer.
    Let me know the results.
    Have a fantastic day!

  • Lenovo T430 - No Audio Devices Are Installed - I am out of ideas

    Hey all,
Over the last week we have had multiple laptops lose sounds after some windows updates came through.. When clicking on the speakers on the bottom right on the screen and going to playback, recording devices, etc. all we get is a No Audio Devices Are Installed message.
I checked the device manager and there are indeed some problems with the audio drivers as they have yellow exclamation marks, but I can not get them fixed.
I have completely uninstalled the drivers in the device manager, rebooted to let windows try and find a generic driver and I got a failed message after it searched for a while.. I uninstalled again and downloaded a realtek audio HD driver and installed.. That did not fix this issue.
I uninstalled the drivers a third time and downloaded the audio drivers from the downloads section from this Lenovo T430 webpage. I installed them and they seemed to install, but it still has not fixed the issue.
Anytime I try to manually update the drivers I get a "This driver is currently up to date".
What I am seeing still under the Sounds, Video and game controllers section in the device manager is an:
    High Definition Audio Device
    and a
    Realtek High Definition Audio.
Both with yellow exclamation points. If I right click and go to properties, on the first one it shows the driver date as 11/19/10, driver version 6.1.7601.17514.
The properties on the second one are as follows - 9/13/13 version 6.0.1.7040
Any idea on what might be going on and how to fix this issue.. I am at a lose on what to try next..
    Thanks,
    Jeryn

  • [SOLVED] Why doesn't this systemd sleep script work as expected?

    Hey all,
After having a service file to restart an application (that outputs text to the root window for DWM's statusbar) that kept failing numerous times, I decided to go back to the good old scripts to manage things. I already have one in use for my powersaving scripts, that looks like this:
    #!/bin/sh
    case $1/$2 in
    pre/*)
    /usr/bin/powersave false ;;
    post/*)
    if cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT1/status | grep Discharging > /d$
    then
    /usr/bin/powersave true
    else
    /usr/bin/powersave false
    fi
    esac
I based the new script on it, which looks like this:
    #!/bin/sh
    case $1/$2 in
    pre/*)
    /usr/bin/killall dwmst
    post/*)
    /usr/bin/sleep 3 && /usr/bin/dwmst &
    esac
But it's not working after suspend; my application is not launched. When I run the script from the terminal, it does work as expected. Here's the output of journalctl:
    nov 22 15:05:48 edge systemd-sleep[7405]: /usr/lib/systemd/system-sleep/dwmst.sh exited with exit status 1.
    What is wrong here?
EDIT 23-12-2013: I went back to a systemd service file.
Last edited by Unia (2013-12-23 00:04:40)

If you test it by putting some things in there that print to a file or the journal or something, do they show up?  I'm just wondering if the formatting is somehow screwed up (which it doesn't appear to be), or if it might be some kind of a race between the things run by /usr/bin/powersave and the things it writes to.

  • New Lenovo T430 Choppy Audio Playback of MP3s only in any program

    Hello,
I am trying to troubleshoot a choppy audio playback problem with MP3 files on a Lenovo T430. The sound "skips" at regular internavls (about once a second). I have tried the following with no success:
    1. Windows sound troubleshooter.
    2. Playback through WMP 12.
    3. Playback through VLC.
I was suprised to find the playback poor through VLC. Sound is fine when playing a youtube video. Any ideas on what next steps I can take would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Slow Imaging on Lenovo T430 with MDT 2012 Update 1

I am having an issue where laying down the operating system (Custom WIM, Windows 7 x64 about 3GB in size) to a Lenovo T430 machines using MDT 2012 Update 1 is slow.  The install operating system/applying image, seems to hang around 20%, this process takes anywhere from 10-20 minutes to complete before DISM applies the unattend file.  While the process is “hung” the hard drive light on the laptop is solid, so I assume something is going on but I still do not understand why the process seems to hang.  When I image an older Lenovo T410 laptop the WIM is layed down in about in about 5 minutes.  So it seems strange to me that a new laptop model would be slower.  I added new network card drivers and storage device drivers to out of box drivers and updated my deployment share.  I am currently using a lite touch deployment, so I extracted the ISO to a bootable USB stick.
I thought this was a driver issue but I am not sure now. Anyone else see anything like this? Below is a screenshot of the process I am talking about, although like I said above, it seems to hang around 20% or so.

I'm experiencing the same issue with our latest batch of T430s laptops, using SCCM 2007 to deploy a custom WIN7SP1 x64 image:
With the 1st shipment of T430s' we received (Type: 2355-CE8), our image deploys to a system in 31 minutes total. The WIM download + apply stage with this model takes 7 minutes during the deployment.
With the 2nd shipment of T430s' we received (Type: 2355-2G8), our image deploys to a system in 97 minutes total. The WIM download + apply stage with this model takes 72 minutes during the deployment.
Aside from an additional stick of memory and a backlit keyboard, these two shipments should've been identical. A quick device manager comparison of the two types shows only one major difference: the Type 2355-CE8 systems use a Micron SSD (C400-MTFDDAK128MAM) where as the Type 2355-2G8 use a Toshiba SSD (THNSNF128GCSS).
If I swap the Micron SSD (from a Type 2355-CE8 system) into one of the Type 2355-2G8 systems and re-image it, deployment now takes 33 minutes total, and the WIM + download stage takes 8 minutes during the deployment.
A 2-3 minute difference (total deployment time) is acceptable, but a 60+ minute difference is not.

  • Issues Exiting Sleep Mode and Odd Behavior On Restart with GPU

I'm running a completely stock HP P7-1240 desktop except for an EVGA GeForce GTX 750 TI SC GPU. The GPU runs fine when the computer is up and running (which is odd because the forums have several other threads mentioning that the 700 series should be incompatible with my BIOS).
However, there are two main strange problems that have arisen since installing the GPU. One is that, whenever the computer enters sleep mode, it refuses to wake back up properly. It seems to me that the computer activates but does not send any signals out from the back panel (at the very least, no video signal because my monitors stay blank). On a rare occasion, it will wake back up properly, but at least 90% of the time, it needs to be restarted. Upon restart, sometimes the same issue occurs (no video output), and the computer needs to be restarted a second time before it will boot up again.
This leads to the second problem. When starting, the computer goes to a black screen listing basic computer specs (see attached photo. At this screen, the computer does not respond to any input.  It proceeds to beep 3 times, all the same length and pitch spaced about 30 seconds apart. After the third beep, the screen goes black and then the computer boots up normally with no further odd behavior.
Without the GPU, none of these issues happen. At the very least, not regularly.
I have seen another thread mentioning that, although the HP support page for my desktop does not list it, there is a BIOS update for my motherboard that has fixed issues relating to more modern GPU's. By nature of it being a BIOS update that does not (appear to) officially support Windows 7, I'm hesitant to move forward with that potential solution.
Although I'm planning to build myself a new computer from scratch at some point, I was hoping to at least get another year out of this machine, if not 2.  While this issue doesn't appear to be immediately threatening the stability of the computer, I can't help but think that this is an issue I should iron soon to avoid future issues (not to mention it would save me a fair amount of electricity to be able to enter sleep mode on a regular basis).
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello @johnmwalker,
I understand that you are having some issues with your HP Pavilion p7-1240 Desktop PC waking up from sleep mode. I am not sure how much can be done for the delay on your startup with an OEM BIOS you are limited in what you can do and since your graphic card works I think you would be better off not messing too much with the BIOS at this point. The one thing I would try is going into the BIOS using the HP Support document:BIOS Setup Utility Information and Menu Options, and under Advanced > Power-On Options set POST Messages to Disable and POST Delay (in seconds) to None.
Now the waking from sleep mode issue  could just be the hybrid sleep setting causing you an issue with sleep mode. Use the following steps to disable hybrid sleep:
    Step 1. Click Start
    Step 2. Click Control Panel.
Step 3. Click System and Security
    Step 4. Click Power Options
Step 5. Click High Performance from Power Options
Step 6. Click Change plan settings
Step 7. Select Change advanced power settings
Step 8. Click the plus (+) sign next to Sleep
Step 9. Click the plus (+) sign next to Allow hybrid sleep
Step 10. Select Off from the drop-down menu
    Step 11. Click OK

By "keypad" do you mean the full keyboard? You should be able to order this from Lenovo in India.
This Parts List shows all the individual parts you can order for a T430s: http://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/T430s_FRU_BOM.pdf
Note that keybvoards come from 2 or 3 different suppliers. Each has a distinctive feel. If this is important to you then make sure you get the same FRU as you now have.
Incidentally the T430s User Guide that came with your unit has instructions for removing and replacing the keyboard. If you remove the keyboard you should be able to find the FRU number for your current keyboard.

  • Lenovo SL510 suspend (S3 sleep) is not working

    Hi all,
I bought a new Lenovo SL510 with T5870 2GHz CPU, 250GB HDD, no OS, (part No. NSLQ7MC). Installation of Ubuntu Karmic 32bit was without any problems, but I didn't get the suspend working. Hibernation works fine.
When I click sleep button (or echo -n mem > /sys/power/state), the screen backlight goes off, but graphics on LCD is still visible, after 10s fan goes to max and sleep LED is blinking wild. No further reaction to power button. Of course, poweroff works, when I hold for more then 2 sec. I suppose the sleep routine somehow hangs forever.
btw. I also tried with 32bit Suse Live CD, BIOS upgrade and 2.6.32 kernel, all with the same result.
Did someone get the sleep mode working on SL510?
Do you have 32 or 64bit Linux?
What is your SL510 hardware model?
Many thanks for your help, regards Petr

  • T430s suspend/resume bug in Linux

Running Ubuntu 13.04 on T430s (this was also happening with 12.10):
When I suspend, the machine does go into suspend mode, but then -- not every time but often -- the battery light comes back on, either immediately or somewhat later.  I press the power button, attempting to resume. The button lights up but the machine doesn't come back to life.
So I have to do a hard reset (easiest way is to just pull the battery out and put it back in).
Meanwhile, the computer gets extremely hot. This is especially bad when it's in my travel bag.
The bug has made suspend useless. I am now shutting down and restarting every time I want to move the computer with the lid closed.
I've posted this on Ubuntu Bugs with no suggestions. Does anyone here have any ideas?

I do not have any ideas that will help fix the sleep issue, but getting a good solid state drive could be a workaround.  I no longer use sleep or hibernate because my machines boot up and are online in ~ 28 seconds.  I have done no tweaking to speed that up, and I do not use automatic login.  One Thinkpad is 6 months old, one is 6 years old.

  • T430 heating while in sleeping

    hey guys,
i'm a new Lenovo user, just bought my T430 this week.
after installing every software i will need on my notebook, i closed it (sleeping) and put it in my backpack. i only needed it again after 2 days. when i touched the bag it was already hot in the outside, i opened it, and my Lenovo was burning... i turned my computer on, the battery went down to 13% from 100% (2 days ago), which is kinda funny as it was sleeping, i would have suggested it uses roughly 10-15% in 2 days.
    my questions are:
    1. is the heating thing normal while sleeping? what could have caused the problem?
    2. is it possible that some parts of the computer got damaged in such a hot atmosphere? (note that i kept it in a closed bag)
possible solution to question 1: i ran a command prompts, typed in the code that tells me what is allowed to wake my computer. noticed the external Logitec mouse and that Intel giganet networks were allowed, so i disabled both. it was probably the mouse as it was in the same bag, i guess it was moving in the bag and waking the computer?
anyways thanks in advance for your help!

You are right, my mistake. There is only the option for "Wake on Lan", i can't find the other option. I suppose it got out  of the bios as option and defaulted to "disabled". Anyway, test the laptop's behavior when in sleep, the main thing is that nothing but your own actions will bring it out of sleep.

  • Howto suspend with systemd [SOLVED]

    Hi All,
I have converted my machines to full systemd including some laptops. ... and am on the whole, very happy with systemd ..
I notice my daughter's laptop (a Samsung N70)  sleeps and resumes just fine without any extra work from me ..
However, my Sony vaio laptop just reboots when I use the Gnome3 suspend menu item. Is there something else I can try to get it to suspend?
I presume the Gnome3 suspend is suspend and not hibernate to disk ..
NB: The samsung was installed from a fresh installation, where the Sony has been recently upgraded and converted to systemd.
    Thanks,

First of all, don't presume things - establish the facts. I have no experience with Gnome, so my advice would be to see if 'systemctl suspend' works in a terminal. If it does, then you need to make sure that's what Gnome uses. If it doesn't you have a more fundamental issue, and the information provided by the systemd journal will help you solve it.
