Good to here, many times on a new system that is you best course of action. Especially if you get someone who know what they're doing and not just a script reader.
I would run the diagnostics, especially the HD when your done and finished updating Windows Updates.
If the HD is failing you'd want to catch it earlier this time.

  • Sluggish Performance & Audio Problems in Lenovo T520

I have experienced strange problems with my Lenovo T520 (specifications: i7, 6GB RAM, I can post detailed configuration). The problems are:
The audio quality is noisy. What I find strange is the audio quality for the same song worsens when play in VLC media player (more noise) v/s when played in Windows Media Player
The performance is sluggish and the system freezes when moved. What I mean is if I am watching a movie and lift the laptop from one place to another. The movie freezes while moving & audio stops. Once stable again the video and audio synch up again
Trackpad unresponsive: The trackpad get unresponsive at times, but the Trackpoint is working fine.
Could you post a solution to any of the problems?

    For the sluggishness....
    (1)  Make sure the power cord is plugged in.  I know...sounds dumb, but I had the same problem with my new T520 and I saw a thread on here stating that Lenovo thought it would be a great idea to make your new T-Series laptop run slow when on battery.
    (2)  Closely inspect the "Power Manager" profile you're using.  I noticed that even the "Maximum Performance" (or whatever it's called) profile was set to NOT best use the CPU.  In Power Manager, click "Advanced" at the top to go from "Basic mode" to "Advanced mode", then click the profile you want to use from the vertical list on the far left.  Then on the right side, expand the first drop-down category called "Performance" or something like that.  Now there will be two columns under that category...battery on the left and AC power on the right.  On the AC power column set the drop-down box to the "Maximum Turbo" setting.

  • Lenovo t520 screen going dark

My lenovo t520 just came back from the repair center to get a new motherboard and I have started noticing a weird issue with the screen. Whenever I go on a website that is primarily dark (like the bckground is black), the screen gets quite dark. And then when it goes back to another screen (like where it is priarily white) the screen is alot darker. After a while the screen gets brighter slowly. I checked the brightness controls and they are always on full bightness through this whole thing.
Is there some auto screen brightness efficancy system i do not know of or is my screen just broken?

Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

  • Photomerge bombs in Photoshop CS5 on my Lenovo T520

    Hi All:
I have a Lenovo T520 and when I attempt to run Photomerge, my Photoshop CS5 terminates immediately. I have run the same thing on my workstation and Photomerge operated properly. Any suggestions?

Photomerge loves to use a LOT of RAM and disk resources.
Have you tried stitching a smaller image?
Have you tried changing the amount of RAM you allow Photoshop to use?
Do you have plenty of scratch disk space?  I've seen a Photomerge of a 150 megapixel panorama take in excess of 200 gigabytes of scratch space on the scratch drive.

  • Lenovo t520 running hot

Hey was wanting to get some input from other users with this laptop. I have the lenovo t520 with nvidia optimus. My concern is the cpu is running really hot. The max temp for the core I5 is 100  degrees celsius. Under load my cpu is running at 98C. Was wondering if i should be conserned or if this is normal for these laptops. I havent had any shutdowns from overheating but I do get a lot of micro studders from the cpu throtteling to control the heat. Since my laptop is out of warranty I cant send it in for repairs without paying out the, well you know.
I was thinking about using software to make a custom fan speed plan but there doesnt seem to be a program that can actaully control the fans speed. Another option would be to upgrade the thermal paste to some artic silver 5 still got a tube laying around somewhere. Thanks for any input guys.

    Hi shoted45,
It wouldn't be a bad idea to clean the dust out of it and change out the thermal paste.
Here's your Hardware Maintenance Manual .  Page 89 shows how to take out the thermal assembly.

  • Lenovo T520 Gaming Upgrades

Hello everyone, I have a Lenovo T520 with the following specs:
    Intel i7-2720QM  (2.2Ghz Quad Core)
    4GB DDR3 1333Mhz RAM
    NVIDIA 4200M 1GB Discrete Graphics
    500GB HD
I am awaiting the release of Diablo 3 and am slightly worried about my laptop's gaming performance. First off I have an extra DIMM slot so I was thinking about adding additional RAM if needed, I ran Crucial scan and it says I can run RAM speeds 1600Mhz, read around and places have said the max for this model is 1333Mhz so I could used that cleared up. Also, I am worried mainly about my GPU performance, I know the 4200M is a business model GPU and may have hard time with the application, is there anyway to upgrade the GPU in this model or is it part of the motherboard? Or do I even need an upgrade, Diablo 3 suggest GeForce GTX 260 GPU as the base model. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I just went back into the BIOS and looked at the options list. Intel HD, Discrete & Nvidia Optimus. I don't know the logic behind this but Nvidia is a discrete graphics module. However, with the Nvida option (which is the 3rd) I have both display adapters showing in device manager. No set the DISCRETE, I have only the Nvidia 4200M (one graphics adapter). I booted loading detected new hardware, loaded drivers (apparenty not the same as Optimus mode) and came up in very low res. After finishing it needed another boot and in HiRes. Benchmark is now 5.2 for Aero from 4.6 a big jump but the Intel HD 3000 should have been higher in my opinion and the 5.2 in nothing spectacular. I've seen other systems in stores with dedicated graphic doing 5.9 easily including the AMD A8 APU system much higher. This is not the best video chipset for a T520 grade notebook. I never heard it used before, G550M & G555M yes.
I wonder why the ThinkPad support techs don't know this. I've been in IT support systems for 2 decades and if I had my hands on this and supported it I would know that and light years more. It appear they're merely script flowchart techs speaking english.
At least I can now use the power of the video. In the dual display adapter setup I am not able to control when the system should use discrete graphics which is wrong.
Thanks for you NOTE earlier on the BIOS settings suggestion.

  • Lenovo T520 Debugging Help

I recently wiped the HDD of my T520 and installed Arch from scratch from a thumb drive (side note: it's been a while since I did a fresh install and I found the new method really great). About a week later (2 days ago), I ran a system update (-Syu) and updated several packages, linux among them. Seeing that, I rebooted. After seeing the BIOS stuff and selecting to boot to Arch (I don't have it auto-select, even though I only have one partition), the screen goes black and nothing ever happens. The Wifi light turns on, but the HDD read light doesn't. I booted from my install media and tried to see if the systemd journal said anything helpful, but the logs look like they never picked up after rebooting after my latest update. My next thought was the chroot and run another system update. I updated linux again, but still no boot. During both updates, the output indicated that new image creation was successful.
Any ideas on how to begin debugging this?
FWIW, I'm using efibootmgr to boot and I see that it has had issues with kernel upgrades in the past (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=156670&p=1), but this machine never had 3.6 or 3.7 on it (the earliest still in the cache is 3.10.3 and the latest is 3.10.7; I've never cleared the cache).

After 5 days of  frustrations of how to try to identify the cause of "AC plugged in but not charging" message. My Lenovo 3000V100 has suddenly started recharging. At one moment it recharges up to 99% and stops recharging, at times it just shows 3 % remaining and stops recharging and now its showing 100% fully charged.
I dont understand this, whats a turn around to this?
Also, are there any drivers for download  -IntelWin DVD drivers for this 3000V100 running on Windows Vista/media drivers. My hard disk was formatted, and i never created any recovery disc.I have at least re-installed few other drivers though.

  • Lenovo T520 Optimus - IE9 32 Bit Crashes

    Hello:
I've been unable to use IE9 32 bit because it crashes shortly after I open the application.  I've disabled evey add-on and it still occurs.  Read something on Lenovo support that something with Optimus causes this.  To temporarily resolve this, I had to use "Software Rendering" vs navtive GPU acceleration.  I installed the latest drivers but the issue remained.
Has anyone solved this problem without using "software rendering" option?  I"m getting used to the IE9 interface over IE8 and would like to switch.
    Thanks,

  • Lenovo T520 quiet speakers

    Hi.
My new T520 speakers are very quite (about as twice as quiet as my old Asus laptop). I tried reinstalling the Conextant drivers, but nothing changed. I looked at some settings in SmartAudio, but nothing helped either so I'm thinking that the issue might be hardware related. When I use my headphones the sound is also twice lower when used on my phone (same headphones).
I wanted to know if anyone else is having the same issue and is it software or hardware related? My friend has a two year old T500 and sound on his laptop is way much louder.

IF the above does not work - I had to fix it the below way
    HI All
i have solved a similar problem with my conexant audio hd , by uninstalling conexant audio hd drivers via control panel (add/remove programs), then allowing windows to install the standard windows "High definition audio device" drivers...
after restarting, then within control panel - sound - speakers properties - enhancements, tick bass boost and loudness equalization. press OK , and then your sound should be twice as loud.. worked fine.
this was within windows 7, but i assume should work for other versions as well. best of luck.. took me a while to find the solution so please repost else where if you found this works for you!! thanks !

  • Busted sound on T520-- pop sound

Hi.  Sound has busted on T520 for a few weeks now.  I can hear sound when I plug in my earphones, but windows recognizes this as a speaker, conexant 20672.   I checked the "find and fix audio playback problems" in windows 7 to no avail.  I believe I may have to have my speakers repaired.  I am still under base warranty until sometime next year.  Any help greatly appreciated!  Happy holidays.

It has not been taken apart.  Do I have to send it in somewhere?  Here is my warranty info: "This product has a three year limited warranty and is entitled to depot repair service. Customers may call their local service center for more information. Dealers may provide carry-in repair for this product. Batteries have a one year warranty."  I believe the laptop was purchased online.  Where would I get in touch with a local service center?  I live in Canada.

  • T520 won't detect Network card in WDS/WinPE/Ghost image disk

    Hello all,
I figured I would just post this so I could save 2 days of someone elses life.
I'm not sure how many other modes have the EFI and UEFI bios's in them but this has caused a lot of problems when trying to capture an image / image the Lenovo T520.  So for anyone else that is having these problems here is how I got around the problem.
    The Problem:
While trying to boot up off a Capture image with a CD or PXE boot for our WDS server the laptop would not detect the network card giving no IP address and listing the adapter as a hybrid.  When trying to do a ipconfig /renew it would give an error around the lines of the loopback something or other ....... the adapter could not be contacted or initated.
I instantly thought this was due to the vanila WinPE / Capture image not having the drivers for the Lenovoo T520, so I went to the website downloaded the new drivers and injected them into the WinPE disk(You will want ot use the NDIS Drivers which are included in the package for this).  Following this process it would still not detect or install the NIC.  After many hours of searching it would apear this was due to the EFI/UEFI bios options not going through the proper boot cycle when in a PE enviroment.  The solution was to mess around with the EFI/UEFI switches in the WinPE boot image during the creation proccess as listed below:
    ocdimg -m -o -u2 -udfver102 -bootdata:2#p0,e,bc:\winpe_x64\etfsboot.com#pEF,e,bc:\winpe_x64\efisys.bin c:\winpe_x64\ISO c:\winpe_x64\winpeuefi.iso
The link with more details is here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947024
Eseentially once the new boot image was complied with the proper EFI / UEFI options enabled it went through the proper boot process detected the NIC and installed the drivers which I previously provided on the disk and we where off to the races imaging the new laptop.
Hopefull this will help some others who are struggling with this or any other model that has this type of bios.
    Cheers, and thanks
Please feel free to post any additional comments to help others if you found better ways to get around this
One side note the EFI/UEFI to legacy mode only does nothing for the NIC problem, I have seen some posts where they can help with the hard drive issues when imaging, however as for the nic not loading in PE enviroments this setting in the BIOS did not reslove the problem.

    Hi Rusty1234
If I did not remember wrongly, you may present or add drivers (network, hardware) under WDS / Ghost software or copy necessary drivers (e.g. your T520 network card drivers) under it's PXE / boot section.
    Happy 2012!

  • T520 with Kingston SSD and OS Win XP Sp3 - Unmountable boot device

    Hello everybody,
I have a problem with the combination of our Lenovo T520 and a Kingston SSD. The last laptop we have ordered no SSD seems to be working with the laptop. I install normally WIn Xp with SP3 the installation work very well but when I begin to install new drivers and make a restart Blue Screen with unmountable boot device. Ive tried also an Corsair SSD it results with the same effect. Do have any idea what else I can do? I've also made an bios update but that also doesn't worked very well. Do you have any other Ideas that i can try to have a better result.
    Best Regards
    ITRUNGIS

Same problem here, spent half the day figuring out what was causing this, now I find another victim. Here's what fixed it for me: Restart WinXP with your ext. monitor connected, login to admin acct, go to "Start" menu>Control Panels>Printers and Other Hardware>NVIDIA Control Panel. Expand the Display folder on the left side and select "Set up multiple displays", then select the "Use only one display" radio button and make sure your laptop display is entered in the "Select the display you would like to use." box. Approve the changes and now it should restart without the ext. monitor connected.

  • T520 with Optimus - Can't install Intel Graphics Driver in XP

    Hello,
I have T520 with Optimus FHD screen.
I have XP installed in my Ultrabay HDD.
I understand that XP doesn't support Optimus and that I must go to BIOS and choose either Discrete or Integrated.
OPTION 1 (Discrete Only)  Which someone what works:
    - So, when I have Discrete enabled in BIOS - and installed Nvidia Drivers in XP - everything works fine, expcept on 90% initial boot ups after going from Win 7 to XP (F12 Options) -  I assume the NVIDIA driver doesn't get initially recognised and the XP boots up in non native resolution.
    - It's only after I restart again and use (F12 again) to pick Ultrabay with XP, the Nvidia gets properly loaded. But this time, there is a prolong delay (60 to 90 seconds) of black screen after the WIndows XP Welcome screen before the desktop appears.
OPTION 2 (Intgrated Display Only) - Of couse, this after uninstalling NVIDIA Graphic Driver in XP
    - In BIOS, Integrated Graphic in choosen.
    - XP boots up in basic resolution.
    - I download (From Lenovo T520 Driver Page) - Intel Integrated Driver for Win XP 32.
    - When I try to install it, it says "The computer doesn't meet the minimum requirements for installing the software"
    - BTW, I do have all the WIndows Updates including NET 3.0 and higher
    - So then, I try to forcibly installed through Device Manager and Having DISK  - but I get Error message.
    - But somehow, it works after.
One guess I have and that confuses me is the Otimus Graphic Card - where maybe it can only work with either Optimus Drivers in Windows 7 or Nvidia Drivers in Windows XP. And that the Integrated Intel HD Graphic Drivers in for XP on Lenovo website are only meant for T520 with Intel Graphics ??!!
Or can optimus be used with intergrated intel drivers only in the XP?
If anyone can shed a small light, I would be grateful.
    Thanks You

Glad to know everything is working for you.
You shouldn't need the discrete to watch flash videos, the Intel integrated should be able to handle that on its own.
The nVidia card shouldn't be running at all when the machine is in integrated . In fact it doesn't even run in Optimus except when it is actively being used. nVidia proved this when it was first demoing the technology. nVidia removed the nVidia chip from the motherboard of an active system that was running in Optimus using only the integrated graphics, and the computer kept running without issue and the power consumption was the same with and without the chip on the board.
If you really wanted FireFox to always run with the nVidia card (again, I don't know why you would want this) you can change the settings in the nVidia control panel to force FireFox to run with discrete.

  • T520 problems with external monitor resolution

    Hi,
I am on permanent hold right now waiting for a Lenovo tech support rep, so I thought I would just post my issue here. I just purchased a Dell ultrasharp U2713HM monitor and am trying to connect it to my Lenovo T520. Sometimes it sees the monitor and sometimes it doesn't, but that isn't my main issue. The monitor is supposed to be 2560x1440, but all of the resolution settings are greyed out. I know the Lenovo can support it because my last monitor was a Samsung SyncMaster that supported 2560x1440, and it was beautiful (beautiful until the monitor blew up).
I have been on the phone with both Dell and Lenovo, and so far nobody has been able to resolve the issue. I upgraded the NVIDIA graphics card driver (NVS4200M) to the most recent version (310.90) as suggested by Dell, and I switched out the VGA cable for the DVI-D cable (connected to a Dual Link Adapter), as suggested by Lenovo. It stlil isn't working.
I could use any suggestions. I am not techy at all, so this is pretty frustrating. Thank you!!

Okay, another update. I changed the graphics thingy in the bios from NVIDIA optimus to discrete based on someone's suggestion, but that did not work, either with the displayport cable OR the dual link adapter. I also just spoke with the Dell tech, and he basically told me to take it to a shop to see if they could figure it out. In other words, I am out of ideas, and I think I will just return the monitor unless anyone out there has any other suggestoins! Thank you!
Just to be clear, are you saying you have a cable with DisplayPort on both ends and your tried that with the default BIOS setting (Optimus), then Discrete, then Integrated and it didn't work on either of those three settings?
