Lenovo T61p CTR-6459 won't boot up

I have a Lenovo T61p which won't boot up.  During the boot up process, there is one long and two short beeps.   Can anyone provide some insight into what might be wrong and possibly how to resolve?   Thanks

Welcome to the forum!
Most likely a bad motherboard, there's a *very* long thread about the issue at hand:

Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade.
What happen: My laptop was working fine, no blue screen issue, no funny business at all. I bought a new SSD Intel 120 GB and thought it would be a good idea to replace the HDD. I shutdown and disconnected the power adapter, waited a couple of minutes and removed the battery. I opened up the back case and replaced the HDD. And put all the screws back and put the battery back in.
Problem: The very first time I turned the power on, nothing happens besides a black screen. I pressed the dvd drive it works and opens up and closes. I waited for about 30 mins and still has blac screen. When I mean black screen, no bios menu, no logo, just a black screen with the fan sound on.
    I have tried these:
    1. Unplugged everything - battery, adapter, and pressed the power on button for about 60 seconds, nothing, the laptop turns on with the LED display on for both on and battery LED's. But nothing but black screen, no sound of windows loading just the fan and black screen.
    2. I tried putting back my old 2.5" and nothing but black screen.
    Thoughts and suggestions?

  • BRAND NEW LENOVO K300 5316 1BU (WON'T BOOT FROM DVD SUPERJULTI DRIVE/CD-WRITER

Would appreciate info from the Lenovo Community as to what might be the problem and a fix.
I just received my new Lenovo K300 5316 1BU. As one of the first tasks I made a Lenovo Repair Disc.
To test my disc I rebooted my computer with disc in drive. During reboot I pressed F12 to get to the proper menu.
I chose the cd/dvd drive as the first boot option. It showed that the drive was recognized stating Boot Priority but then went directly into my Windows 7 deskop.
I called Tech Support and tried everything with them with the same results.
They instructed me to do a complete System Restore to see if that corrects the problem.
I have not done this yet since I will do a backup of my present setup, not to loose all my hard work and time setting up all my programs and settings.
Before I do a complete system restore I would appreciate any comments or suggestions from the community regarding this situation.
Do you also believe that doing a full system restore will help or should I send this computer back?
I do find it hard to believe that a computer less than a week old would have this problem with the DVD Supermulti Drive /CD writer.
If I still have no success after a full restore or a resolve from the Lenovo IdeaCentre Community then I will return this computer back to TigerDirect.
To conclude I would like to mention the following regarding this brand new Lenovo K300 5316 1BU top of the line desktop computer.
One of the reasons I purchased this particular desktop was because of the Lenovo Windows 7 ENHANCED operating system that Lenovo has been advertising so much.
To my surprise and disappointment, this BRAND NEW Lenovo Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit does not have the Enhance version, it is Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit only.
Apparently, Lenovo is making some with Enhanced and some without.
Finally, another reason I purchased the 1BU version is because it has a TV Tuner.
To my surprise again, the TV Tuner card in this model does not have an FM Tuner, which almost all TV Tuner Cards have. So, as a result, no FM Radio with Windows 7 Media Center.
Thank you for taking the time to read this long post, but thought it was important to share with the community.
Comments and Help will be most appreciated.

What brand DVD drive did you install? Some third-party drives won't boot by holding down the C key at startup, because they lack the Apple/OEM drive's ROM programming. I recently installed a Memorex (manufactured by LG) DVD burner in a B&W G3, which is recognized by Toast and (with PatchBurn) the iApps. The compatibility problem occurs when selecting a CD/DVD as the startup disk using the Startup Disk Preferences/control panel or by holding down the C key during the restart. In either case, the drive ejects the disk during the POST, so that I have to immediately close the tray and hold down the C key again, to persuade it to boot from the disk. Is this similar to what you're experiencing?

  • Ideapad K1 won't boot past Lenovo screen

HELP! My IdeaPad won't boot past the lenovo splash screen. Here's what happened...
It has an AOSP version of Android on it which has been running fine for over a year - never had a problem with it. Yesterday, I tried to awake it from sleep but nothing happened. So I held the power button down until it switched off. I then restarted it and got to the password screen. After entering my password it became unresponsive - it just stalled with the desktop screen on. I gave it 10 minutes but it never became responsive again.
I reset it by holding the power button again until it switched off then I switched it back on. It has never got past the Lenovo splash screen. I've tried booting it loads of times, giving it a full charge, taking the SD card out, giving it a rest, leaving it booting for the whole night...nothing has worked, same result.
I also tried connecting it to the computer and using NV-Flash to put a new image on. It seems to work okay but when it re-boots it still won't get paast the Lenovo splash screen.
I'm desperate for anyone to give me some hints and tips as to where to go from here. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi,
I am having a similar problem. My 3 month old ideapad u510 froze last night while surfing the internet. nothing worked as far as getting shutdown menu in windows 8 to even work (just froze), so pushed power button till it turned off. immediately afterward, tried to boot by pushing power button and it just stopped booting at lenovo screen.
i've tried to boot a few times since and sometimes i see progress thing (circle of lights...similar to status bar) going other times not. i am not sure what key it is but can get to bios screen sometimes too. was hoping there was safe mode boot in bios but doesn't appear anything thats useful so didn't change anything. it just doesn't boot to windows after exiting bios.
my hunch is that i need a bootdisk or sort. importantly, would like to avoid resetting or refreshing, etc.. until have opportunity to get data off harddrive if possible. some important stuff on there that need to get off first.
    Help is very much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    J

  • Lenovo N100 won't boot!

Almost two weeks ago I shut my computer down one night and the next morning it would not boot. It goes through the motions but before starting windows i get a blue screen for a split second and then it restarts. I got a boot disk for windows vista and used the repair feature on that but it did not help. Since it looked like I would have to restore the whole thing to get it working again, I transferred all my personal files from it to another laptop. Now I just need to restore.
The problem is that somewhere along the way, the Lenovo recovery system that comes up when you press the "lenovo care" button doesnt load anymore. I've been trying to figure out a way to get that back. I found in the Troubleshooting section of lenovo a way to make a boot disk but it only works with Floppy disks and I do not have a floppy drive! (see here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-54483) Is there a way to get that on a CD? Please Help!
Any other ideas would be welcome as well.

  • EVGA Geforce GTX 960 Graphics Card won't boot on my Lenovo Ideacentre K410

    PC: Lenovo Ideacentre K410
           I bought it in 2012
New Graphics Card: EVGA Geforce GTX 960
New Power Supply: Corsair CX 430
    Issue:
I plugged in my graphics card to my new power supply.
I get the Lenovo splash screen, then 3 beeps, then a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left.
If I disconnect the graphics card, and just use the VGA connection, everything works fine.
How do I get my new graphics card to work on this PC?

    hi mwvg79,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
If you boot in to BIOS with F1 while powering ON the computerCheck if you system supports UEFI.
UEFI/ BIOS should have a Uefi option under Boot tab or start up tab Try to set those to Legacy
If non then this is a legacy BIOS already.
also im thinking about Compatibility issues with this card, since this is not listed under the Maintenance Manual as replacement Parts.

  • Lenovo T61p upgrading possibilities

    Hello dear Lenovo community people,
I am new here and myself I'm an IT technician and I would like to do a few modifications to my Lenovo T61p.
First of all, my biggest plan was upgrading the processor, right now I have a Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 @ 2.4Ghz. I have read many posts and forums about going to Core 2 Extreme X9000 or Core 2 Duo T9300. My question is, are these upgrades possible and how much would they cost in today's used parts economy? Would there be any overheating issues considering the voltage and power they use?
My second question is considering the RAM in my system. I have read that adding up to 8GB is possible, but Lenovo homepage says max is 4GB(which I have). Is it possible for me and how much would they cost in today's used parts economy? Would it be useful?
My third question is about extra add-ons, my edition of this computer didn't come with a built-in SD-card slot, but instead had a built-in Smartcard slot, can I add an SD card slot somewhere(PCMCIA or anywhere else besides USB)?
Also I don't have the firewire port, but instead it has just a black plastic in front of it. Can I add a firewire port there?
Are there also any 3G possibilities on my system, besides 3G USB?
My fourth question is about the HDD, what is the maximum a T61p will support, right now I have a stock 100GB HDD, I was planning on putting a 1TB in, since it fits in there. Is this possible?
Also, what kind of motherboard do I have? I heard the penryn is newer compared to a merom and has more possibilities. How to determine, which model I have?
My last question is considering the TrackPoint, I have the old-fashioned TrackPoint, which the old T23 had(http://blog.codinghorror.com/content/images/uploads/2006/05/6a0120a85dcdae970b0120a86d647f970b-pi.jp... so I really want to upgrade to this new one(http://www.vath.co/images/IBM%20Trackpoint%20SOFTDOME%20165.jpg). Is it possible and will it fit?
Are all these choices useful, considering I do lots of work, install a lot and do med-heavy gaming(CS: GO, old classics, some new ones etc.)?
I am also wondering; which Windows suits me best, right now I have Windows7 Home Premium, what is the next best thing, Enterprise or Ultimate, or stick with Home Premium, what are the differences in perofrmance? Should I go to Windows 8 or 8.1, maybe 9 or 10???

  • Does UEFI exist on Lenovo T61P running Windows 8.1?

Just installed Windows 8.1 on my Lenovo T61P and running great after fixing wi-fi issue. Need to know how to boot from CD in this new operating system, as BIOS is still same as from XP days. I have read I have to change from UEIF mode to Legacy mode but don't know where it is, it it even exists, or what. This is important as I am setting up rescue boot CD's to recover backups. I can only get into the BIOS Setup Utility screen. See no options for setting to legacy anywhere. Please help as I need to boot from CD to test out emergency options. Has to be a way I would think as I believe Windows 8.1 automatically puts this boot mode in UIFE but I have no issues with security and would like to keep this off if possible.
I have tried also to go in via the options route after stariting Windows. When I get to the screen that gives the option to do this, that option is missing. I read that "Lenovo preloaded Windows 8/8.1 is set up  with UEFI boot. If your computer is not fitted with UEFI boot, you can only enter BIOS setup or UEFI firmware via the traditional method."
    Last updated 26 Mar 2014.
Are there any downloads that will install this? Am I stuck in UEFI mode or what? Please comment. Am I in Legacy mode? How do I find out?
Is the Bios Update Utility for Windows 8 etc released 8/4/2013 the fix for this?  Is this an installed feature or one that can only be run off a boot CD or USB? Looks like it only supports T420s and T420si. Sorry. need on for T61P.
    Edit to say;
    Forgot to add this info.
    Bios vers.   2.3  (7LETDOWW)
    Bios date 2012-02-27
CPU Type  Intel Core 2 Duo CPU  T9300

I did not know the BIOS checked out so new, as it must have been updated on my last warranted repair for this system. Is their an updated file that adds this UIFE to Legacy option in to some type of system setup screen on boot?
thanks and need help soon while I have time to do this.

    Hi,
Your T61p BIOS is pre-UEFI.  The Win 8 install couldn't have changed that.  You don't need to change anything.
To boot a CD, hit the power button and start tapping F12.  That should bring up the boot menu.  Select the CD.

  • Lenovo T61p Cannot logon

I have a Lenovo T61p running Vista Ultimate which I purchased in May of 2008.  Last Friday, I attempted to upgrade my anti-virus package (Spyware Doctor) and somehow damage my system.  The laptop hangs just  before displaying the login screen...stuck on the "Please Wait..." screen.  I encounter he same problem (stuck on Please wait) if I attempt to boot in safe mode.  Here is what I have tried without success:
    1. Start in Safe Mode
    2. Start in Safe Mode with Networking
    3. Start in Safe Mode WIth Command Prompt
    4. Boot from Recovery Disk and run Startup Repair
    5. Use Last Known Good COnfiguration
I was able to access the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery tools over the week and retrieve most of my files but for some reason can no longer access these tools.  I just reviewed my records and found that the laptop is still under warranty. I just cannot devote any more time to this issue. Do I have the option of sending the laptop back to Lenovo to restore back to a normal state?
    Thanks,
    John

Funny you should ask about the security chip.  Here is a more detailed history of this problem. My son was helping me with this issue and cannot remember all the details.
After installing the update to Spyware Doctor, we started getting warning message about TPM.  As my son remembers, the warning message contained a link to the TPM Administration. He clicked on the link and somehow got a prompt to set the TPM password, he selected to let the system pick the password.  He remembers seeing a 40 digit password which he did write down. He also remembers executing the command "netsh winsock reset catalog" from a DOS window.  After these changes, he rebooted and encountered the "stuck at Please Wait" problem which prevents the login screen from displaying. We have never been able to log-in to our laptop since the reboot.
We have tried changing the state of the security chip from active, inactive, and disable. We also tried the clear the security chip option without success. I believe at the moment the security chip is set to active. At this point, we tried so many options I am not sure what do.

  • Lenovo T61p temperatures

    Hellp again fellow community members!
First of all I would like to wish all of you a happy new year!
So, I wrote here again, because I have some concerns with laptops and their temps. Ever since I changed my CPU from T7700 -> T9300 C2D on my Lenovo T61p, but after this, the temps have gone down way too much! What I mean is, that before when I used the laptop, idle CPU temps were at 40C and GPU at 48C. Now, the GPU is about the same, but the CPU temps are too too low, from 40C --> 26C. Is this normal? CPU Usage is the same, around 2-10%.
I did change the thermal paste and clean out the dust though, there was no dust!
I have used many many laptops, old, new and from different companies but I have NEVER seen such low temps, EVER! Even on my desktop!!!
    Should I worry?
Hello! I use a Lenovo T61P in every day!

Bios mode disables all fan controls, smart mode lets the app control the fan and it can be tweaked to give you better cooling or to avoid fan noise depending on your preference. Most use smart mode. Manual mode allows you to set the speed and to run the fan constant, this is generally only good for testing or specific type of use like if you want to run the fan constant at a slow speed instead of having it cycle on at high speed then off again. This can be handy if you're using your laptop while someone is sleeping next to you, the constant slow speed won't disturb someone as much as the on/off. In manual mode it will re-engage control if the temps reach a dangerous level to prevent overheating.
Your results confirm that your laptop is running cooler than most, this could be a good thing and most likely it's because you're not stressing the cpu/gpu chips enough to get the temps up. You can try playing games or watching videos with a player that uses the discrete gpu or you can run a GPU stress test to get the temps up. I use Furmark, it's a free GPU stress test app. When you start it hit the "space bar" to disable the fuzzy donut which isn't required to stress a laptop gpu, it's only needed for a gaming computer many of which have multiple GPUs. When stressed in smart mode you should see the fan coming on when the temp of the CPU and GPU reach 60 to 65c. Temps below this won't engage the fan. With heavy use temps upto mid 80s aren't abnormal and once you get over mid 90s you risk thermal shutdown to prevent damage.
Some factors regarding temp are the room temp and humidity where it's used. If your room is cool and dry the laptop will run a lot cooler. In hot humid climates you'll see a well tuned laptop reaching 60c pretty quickly under moderate use and with cool dry air and light use you may not need the fan at all so I suspect that is what you're experiencing. Cool is usually always better as long as your laptop is working properly and performing well. The stress test I recommend should get your temps up so you can be sure it's working properly and you'll see the fan working properly if it engages when you hit about 60-65c.
The test can also be used to demonstrate the health of your gpu, with the fan on manual mode speed 7 you should see a nice level graph for gpu temp in furmark. This is one example when the manual mode is useful so the changes in fan speed won't change the gpu temp and you can see the chips temps when running at max with max cooling.
In summary I'm inclined to think you have a very efficient cooling system, but these tests will help confirm that.

  • T500 won't boot

I recently started having a problem with my T500 where it won't boot.  When I press the power button, the fan starts spinning, I can hear the DVD drive & HD spin up, and the light to the left of the battery icon turns on, but that's all I get.  It doesn't even get to the BIOS.  To confuse the matter a bit, this happens almost 100% of the time, however if I power off & on about 20-30 times, if I'm lucky, it may boot all way into Windows and is fully functional.
I tried calling tech support, but since my laptop is a week out of warranty, they're not interested in helping.  They just want me to pay $575 and send my laptop to them.
Since it's not completely dead and occasionally boots, it seems like it may be a loose connection somewhere, or maybe a motherboard going bad.  Any suggestions?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Sounds like a motherboard problem, but this is the first time i have seen a problem like this, i am not sure whether you can attribute it to the motherboard.
But if you are only 1 week out of warranty then you can still upgrade the warranty to 3 years. As i think Lenovo give a one month grace period after the warranty ends where you can upgrade the warranty. You should call Lenovo customer service/sales department and enquire.
If you can get warranty, then it is surely cheaper than you paying the $575 for a once off fix.

  • Ideapad S10-3 black screen, won't boot

    Hello, every body.
I have a lenovo ideapad s10-3. Right now it is black screen and won't boot, but power works.
I disassembled it, and just left CPU, graphics card, and RAM. Power works, and fan starts rotating and stops. I leave it running, i can feel CPU and Graphics Card hot.
Before this problem(black screen and won't boot) happened. sometime it can boot, somtimes it does not and black screen. Sometime after trying several time (force ti shutdown, restart power on), it boots and goes to be normal. Right now it won't work anymore.
At the left-bottom of laptop, there are 4 flash lights, the former 3 are working fine, and the last (4th. there is small arrow (two sides) in the center of cylinder, what does it mean?) does not flash. If it flashes fine, the computer works well, if not, won't work.
I clean the RAM fingerpin, won't work. Tried to connect with external screen, won't work. Remove BIOS battery, won't work. I tried another Hard Drive and RAM seperately, it does not work.
I did try this solution (How to fix Graphics Card in Lenovo R61 ), but it does not work for my computer.
I can press power button to force the laptop shut down, it looks like the motherboard has no problem
What is going on my laptop. Please help me of this trouble. Thanks a lot.
    Happy Christmas and New Year.

    Hi,
    1) Yeah, somehow OS X has been messed up enough that it can't finish loading. What else have you done with it lately? When I went through my machine fiddling with Quicktime in the system Library folders, I ended up where you are.
    2) I don't think you can fix it from the OF prompt. I had a daily backup of my drive, and so I was able to boot off of that. You can boot back into OS 9 though, by holding down the Option key after a cold boot's chime.
    4) I'd say it's worth fixing. Beats plunking down $500 or more on a new machine.

  • XP won't boot, mising dll, asking for install cd

I have a friends Lenovo 3000 C200, and it won't boot.  I do not have a Lenovo Install disk, but do have a XP Pro install disk.  When using it, at the start of the recovery, I get prompted for the admin password, which I nor he knows.
With the hard drive in an external SATA cradle, I can view it on my windows 7 box, but there are no files in his profile's My Documents folder, just 200 empty folders.  There should be numerous pictures from his camera in the folders with dates that the pics were taken.
I found a sma.txt file on C:\ that has a list of files from his documents folder, and it relates to the time a backup was evidently done prior to the OS crash.  Backup is in the C:\RRbackups folder.   I have made a backup of this folder (29.5Gb) on my external hard drive, in case I screw up something.
How do I procede?  I discovered pon visiting this forum I can boot into the previously unknown recovery partitioin on his hard drive, and do some sort of recovery, but that sounds like it would wipe out the back up files I mentioned above.
    What is my next move?

    hi BretShooter,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Just to verify, when you're scanning for document / picture files to backup on the XP drive, do you have "Show hidden files and folders" unchecked on the Folder Options?

If "Show hidden files" is unchecked then the data must have gotten deleted along with the missing .dll files. If the files are very important I would ran first an undelete utility to recover the files (e.g. via Active Undelete or similar utility).
From here, you can proceed if you'll install a clean Windows XP Pro, install it in parallel, or perform a repair on the current Windows XP installerion.
