Lenovo T61p upgrading possibilities

Hello dear Lenovo community people,
I am new here and myself I'm an IT technician and I would like to do a few modifications to my Lenovo T61p.
First of all, my biggest plan was upgrading the processor, right now I have a Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 @ 2.4Ghz. I have read many posts and forums about going to Core 2 Extreme X9000 or Core 2 Duo T9300. My question is, are these upgrades possible and how much would they cost in today's used parts economy? Would there be any overheating issues considering the voltage and power they use?
My second question is considering the RAM in my system. I have read that adding up to 8GB is possible, but Lenovo homepage says max is 4GB(which I have). Is it possible for me and how much would they cost in today's used parts economy? Would it be useful?
My third question is about extra add-ons, my edition of this computer didn't come with a built-in SD-card slot, but instead had a built-in Smartcard slot, can I add an SD card slot somewhere(PCMCIA or anywhere else besides USB)?
Also I don't have the firewire port, but instead it has just a black plastic in front of it. Can I add a firewire port there?
Are there also any 3G possibilities on my system, besides 3G USB?
My fourth question is about the HDD, what is the maximum a T61p will support, right now I have a stock 100GB HDD, I was planning on putting a 1TB in, since it fits in there. Is this possible?
Also, what kind of motherboard do I have? I heard the penryn is newer compared to a merom and has more possibilities. How to determine, which model I have?
My last question is considering the TrackPoint, I have the old-fashioned TrackPoint, which the old T23 had(http://blog.codinghorror.com/content/images/uploads/2006/05/6a0120a85dcdae970b0120a86d647f970b-pi.jp... so I really want to upgrade to this new one(http://www.vath.co/images/IBM%20Trackpoint%20SOFTDOME%20165.jpg). Is it possible and will it fit?
Are all these choices useful, considering I do lots of work, install a lot and do med-heavy gaming(CS: GO, old classics, some new ones etc.)?
I am also wondering; which Windows suits me best, right now I have Windows7 Home Premium, what is the next best thing, Enterprise or Ultimate, or stick with Home Premium, what are the differences in perofrmance? Should I go to Windows 8 or 8.1, maybe 9 or 10???

Hello! I use a Lenovo T61P in every day!

Basically Windows 7 does not load the AHCI driver upon boot if the SATA-drive controller was not in AHCI mode at the time of installation. MS offers a fix for this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976#MT3

  • Lenovo T61p Cannot logon

I have a Lenovo T61p running Vista Ultimate which I purchased in May of 2008.  Last Friday, I attempted to upgrade my anti-virus package (Spyware Doctor) and somehow damage my system.  The laptop hangs just  before displaying the login screen...stuck on the "Please Wait..." screen.  I encounter he same problem (stuck on Please wait) if I attempt to boot in safe mode.  Here is what I have tried without success:
    1. Start in Safe Mode
    2. Start in Safe Mode with Networking
    3. Start in Safe Mode WIth Command Prompt
    4. Boot from Recovery Disk and run Startup Repair
    5. Use Last Known Good COnfiguration
I was able to access the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery tools over the week and retrieve most of my files but for some reason can no longer access these tools.  I just reviewed my records and found that the laptop is still under warranty. I just cannot devote any more time to this issue. Do I have the option of sending the laptop back to Lenovo to restore back to a normal state?
    Thanks,
    John

Funny you should ask about the security chip.  Here is a more detailed history of this problem. My son was helping me with this issue and cannot remember all the details.
After installing the update to Spyware Doctor, we started getting warning message about TPM.  As my son remembers, the warning message contained a link to the TPM Administration. He clicked on the link and somehow got a prompt to set the TPM password, he selected to let the system pick the password.  He remembers seeing a 40 digit password which he did write down. He also remembers executing the command "netsh winsock reset catalog" from a DOS window.  After these changes, he rebooted and encountered the "stuck at Please Wait" problem which prevents the login screen from displaying. We have never been able to log-in to our laptop since the reboot.
We have tried changing the state of the security chip from active, inactive, and disable. We also tried the clear the security chip option without success. I believe at the moment the security chip is set to active. At this point, we tried so many options I am not sure what do.

  • Does UEFI exist on Lenovo T61P running Windows 8.1?

Just installed Windows 8.1 on my Lenovo T61P and running great after fixing wi-fi issue. Need to know how to boot from CD in this new operating system, as BIOS is still same as from XP days. I have read I have to change from UEIF mode to Legacy mode but don't know where it is, it it even exists, or what. This is important as I am setting up rescue boot CD's to recover backups. I can only get into the BIOS Setup Utility screen. See no options for setting to legacy anywhere. Please help as I need to boot from CD to test out emergency options. Has to be a way I would think as I believe Windows 8.1 automatically puts this boot mode in UIFE but I have no issues with security and would like to keep this off if possible.
I have tried also to go in via the options route after stariting Windows. When I get to the screen that gives the option to do this, that option is missing. I read that "Lenovo preloaded Windows 8/8.1 is set up  with UEFI boot. If your computer is not fitted with UEFI boot, you can only enter BIOS setup or UEFI firmware via the traditional method."
    Last updated 26 Mar 2014.
Are there any downloads that will install this? Am I stuck in UEFI mode or what? Please comment. Am I in Legacy mode? How do I find out?
Is the Bios Update Utility for Windows 8 etc released 8/4/2013 the fix for this?  Is this an installed feature or one that can only be run off a boot CD or USB? Looks like it only supports T420s and T420si. Sorry. need on for T61P.
    Edit to say;
    Forgot to add this info.
    Bios vers.   2.3  (7LETDOWW)
    Bios date 2012-02-27
CPU Type  Intel Core 2 Duo CPU  T9300
    CPU Speed    2.5GHz
I did not know the BIOS checked out so new, as it must have been updated on my last warranted repair for this system. Is their an updated file that adds this UIFE to Legacy option in to some type of system setup screen on boot?
thanks and need help soon while I have time to do this.

    Hi,
Your T61p BIOS is pre-UEFI.  The Win 8 install couldn't have changed that.  You don't need to change anything.
To boot a CD, hit the power button and start tapping F12.  That should bring up the boot menu.  Select the CD.

  • Lenovo T61p temperatures

    Hellp again fellow community members!
First of all I would like to wish all of you a happy new year!
So, I wrote here again, because I have some concerns with laptops and their temps. Ever since I changed my CPU from T7700 -> T9300 C2D on my Lenovo T61p, but after this, the temps have gone down way too much! What I mean is, that before when I used the laptop, idle CPU temps were at 40C and GPU at 48C. Now, the GPU is about the same, but the CPU temps are too too low, from 40C --> 26C. Is this normal? CPU Usage is the same, around 2-10%.
I did change the thermal paste and clean out the dust though, there was no dust!
I have used many many laptops, old, new and from different companies but I have NEVER seen such low temps, EVER! Even on my desktop!!!
    Should I worry?
Hello! I use a Lenovo T61P in every day!

Bios mode disables all fan controls, smart mode lets the app control the fan and it can be tweaked to give you better cooling or to avoid fan noise depending on your preference. Most use smart mode. Manual mode allows you to set the speed and to run the fan constant, this is generally only good for testing or specific type of use like if you want to run the fan constant at a slow speed instead of having it cycle on at high speed then off again. This can be handy if you're using your laptop while someone is sleeping next to you, the constant slow speed won't disturb someone as much as the on/off. In manual mode it will re-engage control if the temps reach a dangerous level to prevent overheating.
Your results confirm that your laptop is running cooler than most, this could be a good thing and most likely it's because you're not stressing the cpu/gpu chips enough to get the temps up. You can try playing games or watching videos with a player that uses the discrete gpu or you can run a GPU stress test to get the temps up. I use Furmark, it's a free GPU stress test app. When you start it hit the "space bar" to disable the fuzzy donut which isn't required to stress a laptop gpu, it's only needed for a gaming computer many of which have multiple GPUs. When stressed in smart mode you should see the fan coming on when the temp of the CPU and GPU reach 60 to 65c. Temps below this won't engage the fan. With heavy use temps upto mid 80s aren't abnormal and once you get over mid 90s you risk thermal shutdown to prevent damage.
Some factors regarding temp are the room temp and humidity where it's used. If your room is cool and dry the laptop will run a lot cooler. In hot humid climates you'll see a well tuned laptop reaching 60c pretty quickly under moderate use and with cool dry air and light use you may not need the fan at all so I suspect that is what you're experiencing. Cool is usually always better as long as your laptop is working properly and performing well. The stress test I recommend should get your temps up so you can be sure it's working properly and you'll see the fan working properly if it engages when you hit about 60-65c.
The test can also be used to demonstrate the health of your gpu, with the fan on manual mode speed 7 you should see a nice level graph for gpu temp in furmark. This is one example when the manual mode is useful so the changes in fan speed won't change the gpu temp and you can see the chips temps when running at max with max cooling.
In summary I'm inclined to think you have a very efficient cooling system, but these tests will help confirm that.

  • Lenovo T61p-6457 has all of a sudden stopped working!

My Lenovo T61p-6457 has all of a sudden stopped working.
When I power it up I see the that power and HDD green lights go on and from another computer on my network I can access individual files on the T61p hdd.
However when I connect the T61p via VGA cable to an external working monitor I don't see Windows or any images on the external screen!
Do you think that there is only a problem with the screen or could there be something else?
The currently installed screen on the T61p 6457 is WSXGA 1680x1050 (Samsung LTN154P2-LO5).
I have found a working WUXGA 1920 x 1200 along with inverter and cable in the original Lenovo T61p top case housing - will this work in my T61p?

  • Lenovo K450 Upgrades

Hi, I want to upgrade my power supply to a 600w PSU to support a new graphics card. I would like to have either a GeForce gtx 750 or 760. Or maybe a r7 260X. How would I go about doing this since I heard the Lenovo IdeaCentre K450 can only support so high of a GPU. But I also heard that there was a way to bypass this and be able to use higher end GPUs. If I could bypass it, I would like to know how. I would appreciate some help in this matter, thanks. (Btw I purchased this in March 2014, so it has the new Haswell CPU) and since it's the new version, could it now take up to the geforce gtx 750?

    hi JamesA95,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
    According to this Tech specs
Your system sould support 8GB and this Laptop Has two Memory banks, so You should be able to do that RAM setup.
    http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/essential/g-series/g580/#techspecs
Fro RAM I personally recommend this
    http://images.crucial.com/upgrade/Lenovo-memory/Essential+%2F+Value+Line/Lenovo+G580-upgrades.html
Installing SSD This is ver doable.
have the SSD installed where the HDD is now and put the ssd on the Optical Drive slot using a Caddy for 2.5"
Your main Concern here is to Migrate the HDD content to the SSD and losing the Onekey REcovery Option in The Process.
    Regards

  • CS4 Premiere crashing on Lenovo T61p with NAVIDIA FX 570M

    Hello
We have been using CS3 on all our Lenovo laptops with great succese.
So, we decided to try CS4 since we tried it on our desktops and loved it.
Basically we ran into the same problem as many other post I found on Google.
Everything from CS4 Creative Suites installs and runs great, except for Premiere and Ancore.
Premiere opens fine but if I try to open a time line it emediatly crashes.
All the post pointed to a video driver conflict and recommended upgrading the driver which I did, but have the same problem. Original driver was Version 6.14.11.0133 and now updated to the latest offered by Lenovo 6.14.11.7715.
I have tried to uninstall and re-install CS4 several times.
Adobe suggested we try NIVIDIA's drivers but according to NIVIDIA we can only use Lenovo's drivers.
Adobe specs are not to clear, but from what I gather this video card in this laptop will not work no matter what we do?
    Laptop specs:
    Lenovo Thinkpad T61p
Video card: NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M with latest driver 6.14.11.7715
    Intel Core 2 Duo T7800 2.6Ghz
    Ram 2GB
    Hard Drive 70G
Windows XP SP3 all updates instaled
Just looking to get an answer if this laptop can run CS4 or not.
Tried emailing Adobe, but no response. We are presently in Asia and dont want to call customer service and sit on hold at $2 a minute.
    Hope someone can help.

    Feral Cat Films

As I wrote in the original post, I already tried the new driver and old driver both. Neither works.
From what I'm reading CS4 only works on PC desk tops and ONLY Mac Laptops. Thanks Adobe, great job sending everyone over to Apple.
Maybe you should pass all the "CS4 crashing" postings around after the next round of layoffs...

  • T61P: Upgrading 100GB HDD to 250GB HDD using Norton Ghost

Hi, i am planning on upgrading the HDD in my t61p and would like to know, can i use Norton ghost on a desktop pc, with both 2.5" HDD attached to the desktop via USB enclosures, and make an image of the 100gb onto the 250gb? If not this, is there another method of duplicating the HDD's such as making recovery cd's and then using those cd's to place the image onto the new hdd?
    Thanks in advance.

  • T61p upgrading Windwos Vista Basic to Ultimate

So I finally got my laptop on July 29 after ordering it on the 15th, and i am VERY happy with it. The build quality is amazing!
Anyways, when i ordered the t61p i always thought of downgrading it to xp pro, so i orderd the windows vista home basic, but i just found out that if i downgraded to xp my intel turbo memory will go to waste so i guess no downgrading for me! so instead i might as well upgrade to Vista Ultimate. So before i upgrade i assume everything will be wiped and i need to burn recovery discs/drives? unlike other companys such as HP since i have a hp laptop it has another drive that is the recovery drive, IBM does not. and when i pres thinkvantage and do Backupnow i hve to back up my harddrive as well? i want to just back up my system vista basic incase i mess up. if i have to then do i just do a backup and plop everything in a DVD and burn it? after that i put in my vista Ultimate and follow onscreen instructions right? any help would be great! i don't want to do anything until i get replies from somebody that has more experince than me at this..!

  • Lenovo t61p - Penryn Processors?

I did a quick search of the forums and didn't see a thread devoted to this.  However, it is possible I missed it, so forgive me if I'm repeating something that has a thread of its own.  Now...
I am ready and willing to purchase a t61p.  It looks to be an awesome laptop that has everything I want.  Namely I can get it in a 14" size, with a non-glossy screen, and with a graphics card that can handle most of my programs as well as allowing me to play games casually.
However, the Penryn Processors for notebooks were released at CES around Jan 6, 2008.  Some other laptop companies already have these in their line-ups, and I'm waiting for Lenovo to get on ball.
Is there any information available on when the new processors will be available in the t61p?  I'd even appreciate rumors, but concrete information is always preferred.  I'm in the US if that makes a difference.
I also heard that these processors were briefly available but that the option was removed from the website.  It seemed to not be a huge price difference, which makes me all the more willing to wait... provided the wait isn't too terribly long.
    Thanks,
    CT

    Hello,
It appears several ThinkPads with Penryn CPUs are already being sold.  Here are a few I found:
    6460-DWU (T61 with T8100 CPU)
    6465-9TU (T61 with T8100 CPU)
    6465-9UU (T61 with T8300 CPU)
    7658-RUU (T61 with T8100 CPU)
    7658-RVU (T61 with T8100 CPU)
    7673-H6U (X61 with T8100 CPU)
    7673-J5U (X61 with T8300 CPU)
    8934-F9U (R61 with T8100 CPU)
Of course, being available for sale from an online retailer does not mean they are immediately available for shipment.
Most of the notebooks listed above seem to mention having one of Intel's GMA-series of integrated graphics video cores when they listed the video chipset.  If you are looking for a ThinkPad with a Penryn CPU and an nVidia chip-based video card, then you may have to wait a little longer.  Perhaps Lenovo is taking longer to qualify the combination of these two parts.

  • SSD Patriot Warp V2 64gb & 128gb & Lenovo T61P - error 2100 hard disk failed initialisation

Hi guys. I have recently purchased 2 SSD drives - 1x64gb & 1x128gb. I have the 64gb hooked up to the home pc and is running as the C:\ system drive. I wanted to hook up the 128gb drive to my notebook, but I keep getting an initialisation error (2100) - I have tried AHCI and Compatibility Mode, as well as look up various firmware upgrades and hdd firmware upgrade options via Lenovo.
I was just curious if anyone has had problems with this on there system, and if so, how did you overcome it. I have tried both drives on my notebook, both providing the same error, but both work on the desktop system.
I have a strong feeling it is to do with a firmware upgrade through Lenovo (ibm), as I have the most recent upgrade which is already a few months old... Hope to hear something good soon... Thnx guys in advance.
