Lenovo Tech guy gave me pause!

First off I know nothing.
When comparing all the 440 models only the T440 & L440 have displays listed as LED backlit. I could not find LED backlighting mentioned on any of the other 440 models. I call Tech support and ask if the T & L are the only models that are LED backlit and he says he didn't understand what backlighting was so I said it was the lighting behind the LCD screen and would be either LED or CCFL. He put me on hold and came back and said all models were LED. That sounds good to me and I will leave it at that.
As I said he gave me pause so I didn't ask which models had the IPS display feature.
Here is what I could find in regard to IPS looking at the features and specs for each model.
E440 no IPS.
L440 no IPS.
T440 no IPS.
T440p IPS for the FHD screen.
T440s IPS for both HD+ & FHD.
If any info is wrong please correct.

Some 500-series ThinkPads had CCFL backlights and others had LED. As far as I know everything afterwards had only LED.
As for which current models come with IPS screens, the most authoritative source is Product Specifications Reference (PSREF)

I recently had to get a new windows computer, old one crashed. My tech guy got all my itunes library over to the new one, and all my songs are there. However, some won't play and ask me for the password for the apple id they were purchased under. 2 of these ids are obsolete and I have no access to those accts. The songs all played on my old computer without prompting me for a password.
Any ideas how I can get around this hassle and get them all to play? We're talking about 800 songs that are being obstinate. The new computer is authorized under my "new" Apple id, which I have used for years.

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not available in all countries; apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this). Movies currently available in the USA only. Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list, or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.
Select the store on the left side of iTunes.
Click on Purchased on the right side under Quick Links.
You can re-download your available previous purchases.

  • When my old PC died I had the tech guy place my iTunes library on an external hard drive. Just set up my new iMac

When my old PC died I had the tech guy place my iTunes library on an external hard drive. I just set up my iMac and I cannot get my library on the external hard drive to import to iTunes. I authorized my computer and had the "purchased" songs downloaded from iTunes directly, but I have 3,000+ songs from other sources that I cannot seem to get to. Help! What's the trick?!

    Don't import anythiong.
Simply copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from the external to /Music/ on the internal.
    Launch iTunes.
That is all you need to do.

  • Font / InDesign crashes - need 2nd opinions vs. our tech guy... PLS hurry...

Two graphic design/computer questions: (we're having issues with fonts/indesign on our G5)
1.) Our tech guy says to NEVER use fonts (freebees) from DaFont.com as they are just a 'time bomb waiting to happen'
2.) When opening certain files in InDesign CS3, it will tell you certain fonts are not loaded, even though suitcase says they are... so he said you 'have to go through the process of then deactivating/reactivating them every time you open the files' (?!?!) and that it's a problem with InDesign.
Anyone shed a good second/third/etc. opinion on these issues?
    /proactive thanks

I'm a Windows user, so I have fewer font issues, but I don't use free fonts. Most of the time I think they'd probaly crash the system right away if they were going to, but so many of them have other problems it really isn't worth the risk of bad output for commercial work. If ID is crashing, the first thing to try is removing those fonts, though.
Fonts might show as not loaded if there is a version difference or a font type difference, and having more than one type of font with the same name loaded can cause all sorts of trouble. I stopped using Suitcase at version 9 because I got tired of buggy behavior (on Macs at my job) and having to rebuild the database once a month. Perhaps things have improved, but we still see posts with Suitcase related problems more often than other font managers, I think. That could be related to market share as easily as program quality, though.
A very smart prepress tech I now does all his font activations manually. He saves customer fonts into folders, then drags the folders into and out of the font library when starting and finishing a job.

You might want to check this thread. Some have had success with CS5 on Windows 8, others not so lucky.

  • Can the Master Password Ever Be Figured Out by the Tech Guys at my Job?

At my job, all the computers are networked into a server. Can the tech guys figure out my Master Password? In other words, how safe are my passwords on Firefox? I'm concerned that the tech department will be able to determine my Master Password and therefore have access to all my passwords.

Read [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Master_password http://kb.mozillazine.org/Master_password] Passwords are encrypted with 3DES-CBC with a key derived from the master key (yours or the default one hardcoded in Firefox if you didn't define a master password) then encoded in base64 and stored in signons.sqlite database. If a user tries to remove the master password, all the password list is deleted.

  • How to use B540P HDMI in? Lenovo tech support was not helpful

I just bought a B540P all in one which has HDMI in/out connections. However there is no description in user manual on how to use it. I was hoping to connect an old desktop computer to the HDMI in, and use the all in one as an LCD monitor for my old desktop. Is this doable? How? I assume with the HDMI in, I can connect it with any HDMI sources, such as a DVD player or a game machine. Can anyone help me?
I called Lenovo tech support line, and got no help from them. Basically they have no idea, and told me this is the first time they heard of this question.

    hi puffercow,
Thanks for posting and welcome to the community.
I really sorry to hear that our supprt team has not been as helpful as we do expect better from our support centres. I'll see what I can do to address this situation to ensure the the support teams are equipped for the future.
However regards to your issues the B540 is equipped to have the HDMI to either use it as and internal or external source. What you need to to do is ensure that your desktop is connected with the HDMI cable and connect it to the HDMI-IN input on the back of the B540P. Powerup the the B540P as well as your Desktop. Once the B540P is loaded, you will then need to switch the display. (See illustration below)
If you not notice on the B540p, on the left there is a symbol with arrows circling each other. (Described in red cicle above). press that to flip the view from the B540p desktop and your connected to HDMI desktop.
hope this helps and please do post your results.
    regards

The Bluetooth on my 2012 Lexus doesn't work with my iPhone 5.  My old android worked perfectly with my car.  Even the tech specialist at Lexus couldn't get it to work.  Lexus said that other iPhone 5s were having the same problem.  What is apple doing to fix this?

Going to the local Apple store this morning...
My problem is not uncommon as the board is showing signs of this happening to many others as well. That is where I found the restore and reboot information to try to solve the issue of crashing apps.
I understand that Apple will not "give away the cow", but letting iPhone users know that the problems they are having are being addressed by Apple is a little more comforting than nothing at all. Other wise, all the apps in world are useless and even more importantly worthless, if a person has to reset/reboot/reload just to get them to work.
IF Apple can not address the basic problems with todays iPhone apps, why should one believe that the iPhone 3.0 OS is any better? Using a PC comparison, which is better, XP or Vista. If the current iPhone OS of 2.2. what ever is not working that well (as related to down loaded apps and iTunes), will OS 3.0 be any better?
The waste of time I refer to is in going to the apps store and downloading the apps... Again why by apps if the free version does not work?

  • Stumped the Tech Guys...

Alrighty, I just spent 1 hr 45 min on the phone with an Adobe Tech named Dan, and didn't get this problem solved. If anyone on this forum knows the solution, you would be a living god to me.
    (Brand New) HP xw8600 Workstation
    Intel Xeon 3.00 GHz Processor
    3.25 GB RAM

I'm trying to install the Adobe CS3 Production Premium package on my new computer. After I select "Install Adobe CS3 Production Premium" from the initial dialog box, a new box saying "Initializing Adobe Creative Suite 3 Production Premium" appears with a progress bar. When the progress bar completes, nothing happens. The license agreement window fails to launch. I've tried copying the Adobe CS3 folder to my desktop and running setup.exe alone with no success.
When I use the same disks on a different computer, the license agreement launches.
With Dan, the Adobe Tech, I ran through the solutions found at:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb402048
None of these solutions fixed the problem. I'm supposed to get a call tomorrow morning from Dan or his supervisor, but if anyone can take a shot at it, I'm all ears.
    Thanks Everyone.

Ok I have a difficult one. I installed CS3 Master Collection about two months ago. I tested out the programs to see if they all worked and they did. Then about two weeks ago I tried After Effects and get the C++ Runtime error. Others give the "Encountered a serious problem" and shuts down. Here is the line-up.
The ones that don't work with various errors:
    Adobe InDesign® CS3
    Adobe Photoshop® CS3 Extended
    Adobe Illustrator® CS3
    Adobe Flash® CS3 Professional
    Adobe After Effects® CS3 Professional
    Adobe Premiere® Pro CS3
    Adobe Encore® CS3
The ones that still work fine are:
    Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro
    Adobe Dreamweaver® CS3
    Adobe Fireworks® CS3
    Adobe Contribute®
    Adobe Soundbooth® CS3
I have gone through the support site and tried several suggestions provided. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing. I can't figure out what was installed between then and now to cause this. Anyone else have a similar situation? Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jake

  • CS6 from great performance to almost unusable performance; non-profit non-tech guy... help!

IF anyone has any suggestions on things to try:
The last few months, I’ve noticed a real decline in my computer’s performance, especially re: Adobe Creative Suite. Running i7-3520M 2.9GHz 8 GB RAM 64 bit INTEL HD graphics 4000. Windows 8.1. 883 GB internal drive of which 209 GB is free. Creative Suite CS6. Handling 1920x1080 @ 23.976 from the t3i.
This system used to run FLAWLESSLY. I realize my specs aren’t the greatest, esp the graphics card, but this used to be a real workhorse when I first got it and through the first year or two. Ok, I’ll admit. The project I’m referring to below was done off of the internal hard drive. I know this is a no-no, but in the past I’ve cheated like this and haven’t had issues. I will try to eliminate the hard drive being a possibility but have a hunch that the problem is more complex.
The last few months, notice things like Photoshop freezing for a few seconds here and there. Illustrator acting wonky. Shortcuts in Premiere spontaneously changing or eliminating themselves (for example Spacebar randomly stopped working as transport in Premiere). In general, Premiere is now a sh**show.
Most concerning: in editing a project in Premiere yesterday, the system has become almost unresponsive. Dropped frame indicator going wild, video just not really playing when it’s out on the timeline. Audio might play, but video freezes up. Not immediately responsive when using JKL transport controls. Even when I render the timeline and even when I’m watching in ¼ resolution. Still the same mostly unresponsive performance.
In addition to Adobe problems, other things are happening like Office products becoming unresponsive or freezing up momentarily. Browser takes a long time to load. I asked the guy that repaired my screen to “tune up” the computer and make it faster. The guy seemed to know what he was doing. HE mentioned that he had “defragmented” and “updated the graphics card drivers” and that the hard drive was in “good shape.” Really I don’t know what he did. I don’t have proof, but the computer actually seems a lot slower since getting it back, ESPECIALLY Adobe CS. Could this be a system-wide problem or mostly Adobe, and is this something that I don't have the knowledge base to handle?

Ah ha, so the computer could ostensibly function but not the more ram or processor intensive applications? CS still pretty much works. Photoshop works well enough. I was able to actually edit something on Premiere, it just really really really was slow and lagging. In the Premiere settings, I have like 6 GB RAM allotted. Is there a test or way to figure out if it is indeed a bad RAM stick?

  • Is ARD 3.0 appropriate for a family tech guy helping parents in the burbs ?

I'm the resident tech guru of the family. When everyone was home for the holidays I was able to help them out by having them bring their computers to me. Now I'm back in my apartment in the city and my parents are having troubles with their new computer 40 miles away in the suburbs. Is Apple remote desktop an appropriate thing to install when I need to visually walk her through an installation procedure? Also, I'll be using ARD over the internet, and my parents have their macs behind a NAT router. Has anyone been in the situation I'm in and how have you made it work?

Is Apple remote desktop an appropriate thing to install when I need to visually walk her through an installation procedure?
It's probably overkill when all you probably want to do is to be able to take control of your parents' system. Try the freeware VNC, which allows you to take control of a system. Mac OS X 10.4 already has a VNC client built in, so all you should need is a VNC application for your system. Chicken of the VNC is one that many people use with success (don't be thrown by the terminology; with VNC, the "admin" application is usually referred to as the client and the VNC on the system you're taking control is referred to as the "server", but it's what you need).
You'll have to set up your network and the network at your parents' house appropriately. On your end, any router/firewall has to pass port 5900, and the NAT device at your parents' house also has to have port 5900 open and forwarded to your parents' computer's internal IP address. Then you enter the IP address of the NAT into ARD.
This has, BTW, been covered her many times, so if you have additonal questions, you might want to search through this forum for "Internet" and you should find a number of threads on the issue. You can also search the Mac OS X Networking form for "VNC".
    Regards.

  • How can I tell if a microsoft tech guy is genuine

I went to Microsoft support page and someone opened a chat page and asked me to allow him to remotely fix my computer, he asked me (in bad English) to pay a £100 I refused because Iwas suspicious was I right because it looked like a real Microsoft site

Probably some phishing email/site, you did well not to trust him. Microsoft engineers are not allowed to perform any actions remotely, let alone ask you for money doing so.

  • Mac/Apple Tech Guys: Please help (Mac Mini/Imac issues)

I have been tasked with setting up one of our rooms as a Mac lab. We want to do it wireless. We have a MAC mini server which is going in via a cat 5 into our network, which works, it sees our network and the internet. We wanted to use the wireless features on the new IMacs and use the mac mini as a work group server. It was grabbing a .192 address so the units cannot grab the internet. At the end of the day we just want these macs to be able to share files and access the internet.
We thought we could just use the air port feature and they would "see" each other.
I never said I knew anything about MACs/apples outside of basic trouble shooting stuff and my boss understands this, but we need to get this working for the kids (they start school Tuesday).
Keep in mind when you answer, I know virtually NOTHING about macs and apples, etc so speak to me like I am a baby.
    PLEASE HELP!

I'm not sure I completely follow your description, but I'll take a stab:
    1) you want the Mini to act as a file server for the iMacs
    and
    2) you want the Mini to provide a internet connection for the iMacs.
Do I have that right? Is there anything else?
Perhaps you could give us more details about what these Macs will actually be doing and running. (For example, will you be running Windows?)
How Many iMacs are there? And did you purchase OSX server software for the Mini, or are you intending to use the builtin sharing features of Leopard?
