Lenovo Thinkpad X series for pro wildlife photography?

A Lenovo Thinkpad x series enquiry please!
As a professional wildlife photographer I'm after a tough notebook that MUST  have the following:
A matt screen-a must for viewing photos outdoors
HDMI- imperative so I can hook it up to my HD monitor back at base
large capacity battery - minumum 6-7 hours in the field
potent processor
as much RAM as possible
powerful graphics card
light weight
Will the X1 or X220 have these? I thought they had glossy screens??
Much appreciated folks...
Moderator edit: Added detail to subject.

Nothing in the X Series has a truely "powerful" graphics card. The X1 and X220 both use the Intel HD 3000 graphics integrated into the processor, not a separate graphics GPU. What exactly are your needs? You mention photography but not video. It should work fine for still photography but not necessarily for video processing.
Besides that point, the X220 looks like it can meet your other needs if you configure your purchase to match (8 GB RAM, external battery pack, DisplayPort to HDMI cable). The X220 has a matte screen (X1 has a glossy screen).

  • Autoscroll is not working. Even though I've enabled that funciton in the options menu, it is not working. I'm using a Lenovo Thinkpad. Thanks for your help.

I press the middle button on my Lenovo Thinkpad and try to scroll over a long web page but the page do not scroll. I have ticked the Autoscroll box on the options menu.
I switch to the Chrome browser and it works ok.
Please I appreciate your help. The Firefox 4 is awesome. I want to use as default browser but I really need the Autoscroll feature.
    Thanks

Just as an update to this post, I was playing around with my printer just now. The specific printer issue I was having, when I created this post, was printing a shipping label via PayPal. After you create a shipping label a pop-up comes with the label where you can print. I was able to print a label (the one printed earlier with my dad's macbook air) in the landscape setting, but not the portrait setting. I wanted to see if this issue was persistent with any type of print job, so I printed out the homepage for google. I was able to print it just fine in both portrait and landscape. So, oddly for now, the only issue seems to be printing the PayPal shipping label in the portrait setting. I know this is such a weird and specific issue, but I would genuinely appreciate it if someone could help me figure out what's going on. For now, printing in the landscape setting is fine, but I'd much prefer to ship in the portrait setting. Also, in case it helps, when I printed the label via my dad's macbook air, I was able to print it just fine in the portrait setting. So this problem seems to be with my macbook pro.

  • Imac for Pro Digital Photography....

I do quite a bit of digital photography with high-end digital backs, was wondering if there would be a significant difference in buying a Mac Pro versus the 2.8 extreme or the 2.4 Imac with an equivalent amount of ram, say 4 gigs. The cost would be greater off course going the Mac Pro route including monitor etc. and less portable. And the expandability issue, which really isn't a problem since I use quite a bit of external drives.
Currently I'm using a first generation intel Imac 20' been having a few connection issues with the camera, not quite sure if it's software or hardware but still get good results with this machine.
I have never used a Mac Pro for this application so not sure if there truly is a mind blowing difference.
I like the portability of the Imac and the quick set up. Also I've heard some rumors about the glossy screen being an issue.
    Any comments would be appreciated.
    Much Thanks.

Never buy a sweater without trying it on.
Visit an Apple Store or make a query at your local Mac users group. I know we have lots of pro & amateur photographers in our MUG (especially in the Ps & Ps Elements SIG) who are always showing each other stuff on their computers.
I have found that many people who do a LOT of digital photography are peculiar in that they like to rely on the evidence of their own eyes more than the opinions of others.
The glossy screen is NOT an issue any more than the glossy inside of the windshield of your car is an issue. It is entirely POSSIBLE to focus on your reflection in your windshield while driving instead of looking through it, but the results are not encouraging. Its a matter of perception, not vision. The human visual system (in more developed examples of the species) quickly sees through the glass instead of focusing on it.

I am also doing digital photography, and am in need of a new machine. My old MDD G4, just can't cut it, especially dealing with RAW images from my D300. If you are using digital backs, I would say that the extra horsepower of a Mac Pro would greatly speed your workflow. Not knowing your workflow, I would still say that the internal expandability would help make keeping images orderly a snap. Say one 4-500 gig drive for unedited raw image storage, another for final edited image storage, and a third or a partition as a swap space for photoshop (Raptor?). You could use an external firewire drive as a backup drive with time-machine. Just a suggestion.
As for a monitor, you get a Dell (I can't believe I said that) FPW2407 24" widescreen. They are just as good as the Apple Cinemas, but cost a lot less. With the cash you save, you can get a Spyder to calibrate it, if don't already have one.
I am waiting for my taxes to come back before I get one. I waited and waited and waited till I could not waits no more, and got a new Nikon body. I am looking at the 8-core 3.0 with the Nvidia 8800. I can get the ram from OWC.
As always, take everything I say with a salt-lick!

  • What happened to the Titanium in ThinkPad T Series? Bring it back!

I have owned seven T series ThinkPads in my life, and I have converted to MacBook Pro.
Why has Lenovo removed the titanium from the T61?
IBM had named the T series for its titanium. That is where the T had come from.
They have said that they have removed it for better wireless connectivity. MacBooks are made of aluminum, and they connect perfectly. Furthermore, IBM titanium models had connected just fine as well.
To replace the sexy titanium cover with a cheap painted plastic is product line suicide!
The paint comes off the T61, and it feels so cheap.
This is why I have converted to MacBook Pro.
Lenovo, please bring back the titanium casing. The Z series had been brilliant. You did not give it a proper chance.
Professional notebooks are to be made of metal casing, titanium or aluminum. Anything else is substandard.
Bring back titanium, and you will see five immediate notebook purchases from me.
MacBook Pro, with an aluminum unibody enclosure **As of September 15, 2008, our company has completely switched to Apple. Having used ThinkPad products for over 10 years, we had desperately tried to find just one reason to continue using these products, to no avail. We are of the view that ThinkPads are no longer premium products. We wish you the best of luck with your ThinkPad! Happy computing…**

    Hello,
I have never seen an IBM or Lenovo ThinkPad T-series notebook with a titanium lid.  I checked this article on Wikipedia, and it did say that some models of the the Z60 series (and maybe the Z61t) had a titanium lid.  The Wikipedia article did state, though, that ThinkPads contain several novel components, including magnesium and titantium, carbon-fiber reinforced plastic and other composite materials and alloys.  So maybe there is some titanium, but just on the inside or at the hinges.
I have a friend who has one of the Apple Mac Books with the aluminum chassis, and he uses an external wireless card with it because he says its wireless reception is poor.  I believe he may have one of the older models, though, so this may be something which has been corrected in later generations.
If you really do want a titanium lid, perhaps you could order a sheet from a company like Online Metals, have whatever burnishing, laser-engraving, polishing, coatings and so forth applied, and then do some kind of chemical or RF weld to bond it to the lid.
Personally, though, I think that if you are going to go through that kind of effort, it might be more interesting use a material like palladium foil.  That might be a little more expensive, though, then using titanium.
If the issue, though, is just the color of the lid and not its place on the periodic table of the elements, then perhaps you could use a service like ColorWare, LaptopDesign or M-Tech to paint it for you?
I have often wondered how IBM chose up with the letters A, G, R, S, T and X to describe various models.  I had thought the "T"-series meant "thin-and-light" and not "titanium."  It is strange that they used "T" instead of "Ti" for the model name, but perhaps they wanted to avoid confusion with Texas Instruments who, in the past, has had their own notebook computer models.  I wonder what elements or materials the other letters in the other lines are supposed to represent?

  • Lenovo Thinkpad 8 Wifi driver for Windows 10?

I've installed Windows 10 Technical Preview on my Lenovo Thinkpad 8. It's been working pretty nicely, except for one thing: the Broadcom Wifi card driver (Broadcom BCM4324 Wireless LAN Driver). Since this doesn't work I have to use a USB antenna.
This driver has gotten no update since the release of the Thinkpad 8! I tried running it in "Windows 8 compatibiliy mode" and that still doen't work. Does anŷone know of a possible way to make it work (either with an update, or an older driver in compatibility mode)? Any idea or suggestion (or word from Broadcom) is welcome!

I had the same problem and installed the Win 8.1 version of the driver.
First deinstall the microsoft driver, download the driver from http://support.lenovo.com/<xx>/<xx>/products/tablets/thinkpad-tablet-series/thinkpad-8/?tabName=Down...
replace <xx> by your language code. eg. en (my language code was de)
look for Broadcom BCM4324 Wireless LAN Driver for Windows 8.1 (32-bit) - ThinkPad 8 or (64-bit in case)
Start the installer and you're done.

  • HP Color Laserjet Pro MFP M277 will not install on Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Windows 7 64 bit

I tried to install printer driver software for my completely new HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP on my Lenovo ThinkPad X1 laptop. Lenovo runs on Windows 7 64 bit. The installation failed during Installation preparation (77% complete). The process stopped saying an error occured without indication of the cause of the error. I have tried installion both from the CD following the printer product and downloading from the HP web, with the same result. I then then turned on my old computer, a Dell Precision M2400 with Windows XP. The installation went perfect without problems on this computer. Is there a bug in the SW for Windows 7 (64), or is some part of the printer SW sensitive to HW variaton between PC companies even if the OS is the same?

I have the same problem with my Lenovo ThinkPad T420 running Windows 7 64 bit.  Tried absolutely everything I could find on the blogs and nothing worked.  To me, seems like a software problem (glaring, given the popularity of Lenovos and the Windows 7 64 bit systems).  Returning the printer tomorrow and will not buy another HP printer.

  • ThinkPad vs. MacBook Pro: IBM Launches Pilot Program for Migrating to Macs

I have just found this great article about IBM starting to use MacBook Pros. Wow!
If you are considering between a MacBook Pro and a Lenovo ThinkPad, then consider no longer. Even IBM, the creator of ThinkPads, is now migrating to Macs. This is great stuff. Check it out!

  • Thinkpad X Series Power Adapters (65W, 90W, etc) Lenovo Store Suggestion

Well, I decided to play pretend today on Lenovo's Thinkpad X Series laptop shopping site. My brother in law needs a new computer, so I look at all the options. Then it hits me, what is going on with the power supplies?
    Here is the issue.
The 90W power adapter is cheaper than the 65W power adapter if you were to buy it as an accessory. Does that not seem backwards? In addition, when you buy a x201 for instance, you are stuck with the more expensive 65W power supply. You could add an additional 90W power supply to the order, but considering that the 90W power brick is not that much bigger (probably less than a half a square inch of the other) 65W power brick and it is cheaper and does more. Why bother with the 65W power supply anyways? In the store you can swap out the battery for a bigger one.
Why not have a downgrade option from the 65W power adapter to the 90W power adapter?
    Just a thought.

The 90 watt adapter costs more to produce than the 65 watt, the price at the online store for accessory may change depending supply and demand. I am not sure why the 90 watt adapter dropped below that of 65 watt, in most instances the price is other way around.

  • About Lenovo Thinkpad W540 for Music Production at a Professional Level

Hey there! I just signed up to this blog in search for an answer to my quest. I've heard a lot of good things about Lenovo ThinkPad W540, and I would like to make sure that I am getting what I really need to stay up to date, in this everyday changing technological world, for a while before making a purchase.
So far, this is what I got in my wish list:
Intel Core i7-4700MQ Processor (6MB Cache, up to 3.40GHz)
    Windows 7 Professional 64
    15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) LED Backlit Anti-Glare Display, Mobile Broadband Ready
    W540 NVIDIA Quadro K1100M 2G
    16GB PC3-12800 DDR3L (4 DIMM)
    500GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
    DVD Recordable
Intel Dual Band Wireless 7260AC with Bluetooth 4.0
    1 Year Depot or Carry-in
I would like to know what are the major differences between the above items, which I have in my wish list, and the ones below:
    1) Intel Core i7-4930MX Processor (8MB Cache, up to 3.90GHz)
2)15.5” 3K (2880 x 1620), IPS LED Backlit Anti-Glare Display, Mobile Broadband Ready, Color Sensor
    3) W540 NVIDIA Quadro K2100M 2G
    4) 32GB PC3-12800 DDR3L (4 DIMM)
    5) I would like a 1TB hard drive but they don't come at 7200 rpm, i guess the one in my wish list works fine.
    6) Do I need a more sophisticated Optical Drive from the  DVD Recordable in my wish list?
I guess whay I am trying to investigate is if I can function in the music production world with a Thinkpad  W 540 with the specs already in my wish list? And, what difference would it make updating this machine with the specs below. Your assistance and comments will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi ColonellONeill, thank you for taking your time in attempt to solve my problems.
Temperatures varies, but it never reached to unbearably hot.
Shutdown warning: for the last couple of times, I did got the blue screen warning (that windows had problem and will restart after collecting the necessary information) on my Helix and hanged display on my external monitor. Otherwise, most of the time, there isn't warning at all.
I doubt if there is anything to do automatic windows update as I have scheduled it every morning at 3 'O' clock! Sometimes it works from weeks to couple of months without even noticing any of these technical problems but then when it starts, it stays for weeks; it just comes and goes - never been able to resolve the issues completely; even the technician.
(It just happend right now! and this time wihtout even warning, and Helix wasn't even running 30 minutes - temperature is normal, I can feel it's little warm.)
Currently I am using my Helix with Thinkpad USB 3 dock connected to external Monitor with wired keyboard and mouse connected back at the dock.

  • ??? iMAC 2012 27" used as display for LENOVO THINKPAD T500 ???

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T500 (must use for work) and my home computer is a 2012 iMac 27". I would liek to use the iMac as an external display for my thinkpad. I've read everywhere online and haven't found the answer I'm looking for!
I bought a displayport TO minidisplay port cable (both male ends) and connected the imac + thinkpad. Executing CMD f2(displayport activating function) does nothing though. I've tried fn+CMD+f2 etc..etc..  I've read these cables can go BOTH ways... (but have also read some only go one way?) The thinkpad has a dvi output as well but I was hoping to use this DP/MDP cable to connect the two computers as it seemed more logical than using the old DVI/VGA formats...
Has anyone got any experience doing this or anything that might help me solve this dilemma.
    Thanks for your time!

Hi, if it doesn't have a real MiniDisplay Port, I doubt the adapter has what is needed to do it from what I've read.

  • Buyer Beware - Horrible Production/ Shipping Time for Lenovo ThinkPad

I ordered my Lenovo ThinkPad T530 on January 27th, with the quoted estimated shipping time to be 02/08. I get an e-mail on 02/05 saying that my order would be delayed and shipped out within 30 days of this notification. This pushed my shipment date to 02/28 with expected arrival time for 03/04.
    Here's my timeline:
    01/27/13 - Placed order
02/05/13 - DELAYED NOTIFICATION, expected shipment to be delivered within "30 days of this notice"
02/08/13 - DELAYED NOTIFICATION, expected to be shipped on 02/28/13 arrival on 03/04/13
03/04/13 (12:50PM) - Checked my order status and it said that my shipment won't be shipped until 03/13/13 arrival on 03/20/13. Sent an e-mail to Lenovo. e-mail included.
03/04/13 (03:57PM) - DELAYED NOTIFICATION, expected to be shipped on 03/13/13 arrival on 03/20/13
    03/04/13 (04:23PM) - Received e-mail from Lenovo representative Shadiqulla *** - e-mail included.
So my order has been delayed THREE TIMES. When was my laptop suppose to be shipped? 02/04/13
As of 03/04/13, they told me my order has been DELAYED AGAIN. So forgive me if I don't take your generic copy and paste apology as a sign that you guys are actually doing something that actually helps the people who buy your product.
I would love a refund, but at this point, what can I say, I'm an optimist, and I'm pretty *** patient, so I'll wait until the 13th, but I just wanted to warn the rest of you.
This is ridiculous and highly inconvenient. I've waited over 36 DAYS for this product and it's still not even in production. You obviously don't care for your customers. This has been the worst experience I've ever had with a company and I hope everyone else is more cautious about purchasing anything from them. Because if this is the example of their customer service now, imagine what it's like when you have the computer down the line.
I'm forwarding my experience to the BBB and I'll keep things updated.
    -Christy
    E-mail to Lenovo:
    To whom it may concern,
I ordered my laptop on 01/27 and not only has it been delayed TWICE, but I wasn't even notified when the THIRD delay occurred. If you truly "value" your customers, then you wouldn't continue to test their patience by giving a horrible estimate time of the shipment date, when you're short on parts. That way, I would have time to secure a different laptop from a different manufacturer. I had high hopes for Lenovo through personal recommendations, but no matter how good the product, the *** customer service can only go so far. Your company makes me feel like a dog.
The order tracker provides practically provides ZERO tracking, because during the past month, nothing has been placed or updated except for how my laptop is continually delayed. This is ridiculous!
For the sake of keeping my anger in check:
What is the ACTUAL status of my order? Has it even been BUILT? It was suppose to arrive 2/4, then delayed shipping to 2/28 with 3/04 arrival, now delayed again to 3/13 arrival on 03/20.
Give actual updates, what's the point of having an order status page - have something actually useful and reliable.
Change the estimated shipping time for the other ThinkPads on your site. My same model and custom built is suppose to be shipped at the same time that someone else places an order for today - that's just ridiculous!
I've been extremely patient when you said it would arrive a month after the quoted shipping time. Thank-you for providing me with the *** experience I've ever had with a company. I was suppose to have it shipped by 03/05 at the latest, and you just tried to sneak the last delay past me. Actually deliver on your word and deliver your product! This is beyond ludicrous I'm suppose to have my laptop already!
    Sincerely,

I ordered my ultrabook  from Levono because we use (hundreds) of them in our organization and I wanted one for home to also do work related business on. When I ordered it, I was told by the salesperson that I would recieve it soon because I live a few miles from the US headquarters and not far from the NC warehouse. I then got an Email that contradicted what I was told;  my machine would be delivered 6 weeks later; shipped from China.  I ordered this unit because I am aware of Levono's reputation for quality and impressed by how soon they became big player in the USA laptop market.  Ir Levono wants to stay competative; they absolutely have to deliver, and deliver sooner. In today's world, people and businesses depend on laptops, and when they need them, need them right away. I would be happy to get this sooner, and much more likely to advertise Levono, and buy from them again, if I did.

I am also using the trial version of FCPX.

You should contact Peachpit about this.
    cannot download requirements from disk
Not sure what this means. Do you mean you can't copy from the accompanying disc? In which case the disc might be defective and you should return it to the reseller. At least that's the usual procedure for this.
