Lenovo U410 - 32GB SSD Failed

I have been running my Lenovo U410 great for a few months, but recently the 32GB SSD gave out. It isn't detected anymore and it gives me the Intel Rapid Start Technology is disabled error everytime Windows is booted. My warranty only has a few months left, but I'm in no shape to be laptopless. Also, replacing the 32GB SSD by myself voids warranty as there are Lenovo stickers on the screws to open up the back panel. I don't have many options, any suggestions what I could do? Also, is there any way to make my U410 run off completely the HDD so I can use "Sleep" when I close the lid. If it's running on "Sleep", the laptop goes to a black screen which is caused by my SSD problem. This is a VERY big problem with U310/U410 owners, but there hasn't be a consensus on a solution.

hi Telstra,
Thanks for Posting!
I believe the SSD is only mounted for Caching.
The system could technically run without it.
If you are to replace the SSD
Open Control Panel and Uninstall the Intel Rapid Start and the Expresscache Software.
                   then Replace your SSD.
Once Installed run the Install the Espress cache software from Lenovo Website.
It should work.
The Warranty is valid even if you replace a part.
Only damages during the process of replacing are not.
You can refer to the system's Maintenance Manual for Disassembly.

Solid Cruver

  • Lenovo U410 and ssd

    Hello,
i bought Leonov Ideapad U410 with 1TB disk and 32ssd disk. My preinstalled Windows 8 is working in AHCI mode.
My question is how to use this ssd disk as cache?

    hi again
try Checking it with expresscache then, Like on my previous reply here's how you check it.
Open the Start Menu, click on "All Programs", then click on "Accessories". Right-click on "Command Prompt" and then choose "Run as administrator" from the menu that appears.
If a prompt appears for "User Account Control", click on "Yes" to allow the Windows Command Processor to run.
Type "eccmd.exe -info" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Look at the end of the command output for one of the following scenarios:
"**ERROR** ECCmd Request device is not available"
(This means that ExpressCache is installed, but the mSATA device is not configured correctly. Uninstall ExpressCache from "Programs and Features" control panel, and then refer to the Solution section of this document.)
"'eccmd.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."
(This means that ExpressCache is not installed. Refer to the Solution section of this document.)
"Cache Read Percent : x.xx%" (where x.xx% is some actual percentage)
"Cache Write Percent : x.xx%" (where x.xx& is some actual percentage)
(This means that ExpressCache is installed and working properly. No further action is needed.)
To resolve the issue, first delete the primary partition on the mSATA SSD and then install the ExpressCache software. The ExpressCache installer will automatically create the necessary caching partition on the mSATA SSD.
Open the Start Menu, type DiskMgmt.msc, and press Enter to start Disk Management.
At the bottom of the Disk Management window, identify the mSATA SSD device. The 16GB mSATA SSD is 14.91GB. The 32GB mSATA SSD is 29.82GB.
The mSATA SSD may contain a "Data2" partition with a drive letter such as D: or E:. If so, check for any saved files on the device. If any files exist, move them to the C:\ drive.
Delete the Primary Partition on the mSATA SSD by right clicking on it and choose "Delete Volume..." from the menu that appears. Click "Yes" to confirm the action.
There should now be at least 14GB of unallocated space on the mSATA SSD.
Download ExpressCache from the following link that corresponds to the Windows 7 installation (32bit or 64bit):
    32bit Windows 7
    64bit Windows 7
Install ExpressCache by double clicking on the setup file downloaded in Step 6 and follow the on-screen instructions. Reboot as prompted.
    If you're planning to:
    1. Upgrade the 32GB mSATA SSD to 120GB and use the Intel Smart Response Technology to cache data, it will be good as the size is big but it will not really take that much space to cache the data (20Gb or below is already good enough for caching). If you're planning to install the OS on the mSATA SSD, It'll also be good but not as fast as using a 2.5 SATA SSD.
    2. Upgrade the 2.5 SATA HDD to a 2.5 SATA SSD and make it as a primary drive, this will improve over all performance especially if you get the OCZ Vertex 4 SATA III 2.5 SSD or similar.as the read/write speed is much faster than the mSATA SSD. Check this review.
Do give this a try and let us know
    Hope This Helps
    Cheers!!!

  • Whats the purpose of the 32gb SSD that came with my u410?

    A few days ago i purchased a u410, I love it ! It came equipped with a 750gb HDD and a 32gb SSD.
First off, what is the purpose of the small SSD?
Second, I was thinking of performing a clean windows 8 install from a retail disk, to remove some the bloatware and such.
Would this be a bad idea?
Thirdly, can i install the OS to the SSD for a speed boost, and then map the other program files and user files to the HDD? Would this actually give me a speed boost?
I have also read that maybe the SSD is for a cache drive, but i dont quite understand this concept. I have looked around for a few hours now and cant find much information on this, so i'd appreciate if someone could shed a little light on the subject.
    Thanks!!!

The SSD is mainly used for Intel Smart Response Technology. SRT is shortly defined as using the SSD to preload program cache files in the SSD so that when you launch a program or boot Windows, you experience the speed of SSD without having the OS on the SSD. That SSD space is not enough to support the OS along with all of its Windows updates and driver updates. You can search using Google about Intel SRT and how to set it up if you are reformatting and reinstalling Windows.

    Hi telstra,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
U410 Support mSATA SSD so You'll need to open up the Base cover to gain access of the card
Here is a Youtube video on how to open it up
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sGwQBiGw-Y
at 2.16 you'll find the SSD disassembly.
For Transferring Windows to the SSD
You can try Paragon Backup & Recovery 12 Home (free trial) as other users have tested it on their Lenovo unit (see this thread).
Change the Boot order so your unit will boot from the SSD
    Hope this

  • Lenovo U410 SDD Fails

    Hi,
    I have a Lenovo U410 laptop with windows 8.1.
First the boot of my system was really slow (taking like 15 mins)! So I checked the forum and deinstalled expresscache and now it works faster. So I thought I'll setup Intel Rapid Start Technology, for that you have to set something in the BIOS from AHCI to RAID. When I did that my PC wouldn't boot anymore, so I changed it back.
For some reason HD Tune can't find my SSD. When I check with Windows for any errors on the ssd it says everything is fine. However, I have the feeling the SSD is useless at the moment. Can you please help me.
Thank you very much in advance.

I reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows 8.1, no changes. It still takes a hell of a time to boot up. Even flashed new bios..
Don't know how to go from here, but I think the problem is not windows, because that works fine. It's got something to do with the boot, but can't figure out what..? Please help

    hi Moh27,
Thanks for Using Lenovo community Forums!
Inside BIOS under boot tab you will find there UEFI Boot you will need to disable that
then u need to move the USB HDD: GENERIC USB HDD to number 1.
You can do that by highlighting the USB HDD: GENERIC USB HDD and pressing F5 or F6 to move it up
    -or-
Highlight the things on top of the USB HDD: GENERIC USB HDD then put them down still using the F5 or F6 to move them down, do it one by one till the USB HDD is on top.
Just make once you got the USB HDD: GENERIC USB HDD to 1 hit F10 to save and exit changes.
    Hope this helps,

  • Lenovo U410 (HDMI) to Thunderbolt

    Hi,
Can i connect my Lenovo u410 (HDMI) to a 27" Apple Thunderbolt monitor?
    If yes, how?
Here at work there are a lot of 27" screens eating dust.
    Many thanks.

It could be that the adapter has failed.  That sounds like the most likely cause of your problem.

  • Lenovo U410 Intel SRT technology

Good day. More recently became the proud owner Ultrabook Lenovo U410 core i3. Out of the box I was a Windows 8 64-bit. Technology Intel Smart Response (hybrid drive) has not been implemented. I decided to unleash the full potential of the laptop. To do this:
    1) I downloaded the OS Windows 8 64bit Single languarge
    2) I downloaded the driver Raid-Array (https://downloadcent...x?DwnldID=22194)
    3) Set in Bios mode Raid
    4) Carry out a "clean" installation of Windows 8 (with area ssd-drive left no marked-up)
    5) Install Intel Rapid Start Technology.
    6) Press the "Speed" - and after a few minutes was an unknown error where you are requested to reboot a computer. and try again
Trying to turn the acceleration is the third day, spent about 5 different system settings and it did not work,
What am I doing wrong - I can not understand. Someone has such a model, and how you turned this "chip".
Another question - is it possible to simultaneously use Smart Response Technology and Rapid Start Technology?

    hi razmarin,
When you installed Windows 8, did you loaded up the RAID drivers eventhough you see the HDD that are listed? (see this thread).
AFAIK, you can install both Intel Smart Response Technology and Intel Rapid Start Technology provided that the SSD can accomodate the space that it requires to run the app (Intel Smart Response uses a minimum of 18.6GB and Intel Rapid Start depends on the RAM (if you have 4GB RAM, the hibernation partition should be equal or larger than the amount of memory in the system).
    Best regards,
    neokenchi

  • Tinkpad W530 w. 32GB SSD and 5hhGB HHD. Factory setup does not allow installation on SSD

    Hi
Today I've received a brand new W530 with 32 GB SSD and 500GB HHD from lenovo. I started to setup the system using the factory setup.... but I was not able to chose the disk to install the system. It only allows to install Win 7 Pro 64 Bit on HHD.
Also the Boot/Recovery Media Disk do not allow to select the disk (drop down list disabled).....
How to get the system onto the SSD instead of HHD?
Having the Win7 on the SSD was the motivation to buy the bundle from lenovo - expecting that the factory setup is ready supporting the SSD..........
Any help is welcome. Thanks in advance.

I totally agree with that point.  The puny 32GB mSATA is designed to be used with the hokey caching Intel created.

  • I am struggling with a small 32GB SSD.

HP Stream 13 Notebook with 4G T-Mobile + Win 8.1, only 1.2 GB left on 32GB SSD drive after I updated it from Win 8.0.
I installed Google Chrome Web browser, MS Office 365 and Norton Security Suite. 1.2 GB seems OK. However, from time to time, it goes down to 250 MB. I have to re-boot Notebook.
Is it normal? Are there any solutions?
I know that someone tried to remove non-removable 7.1GB Recovery partition. It does not work. I know someone used SD card to install additional program. However, three program installed by me do not required huge space.
Did I missed something? Any advice will be appreciated.

Run disk cleanup, open windows explorer and right click on the C drive, select properties. On the General tab click Disk Cleanup, it will run for a minute or two, when it is done another window will open, now click Clean Up System Files, it will run again, this time will give you more options to gain more disk space. You can also go to the More Options tab on the disk cleanup window and hit the cleanup button in the System Restore section. Do Not use the compress this drive to save disk space option!

  • Lenovo U410 8.1 Audio Issues

I have owned the Lenovo U410 Ideapad for a decent while now and I have been consitently satisfied with its preformance. Recently I uprgraded to Windows 8.1 and it does not play any sound from any source. After some searching I found the software to fix it.
    The "Conexant Audio Driver for Windows 8.1 (32-bit, 64-bit) – IdeaPad U310, U310 touch, U410,"
So of course I downloaded it, but the problem persists where sound does occur, with every 1/7 videos on Youtube, or sound lasts for moments but nothing is consistent.

    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Is the issue happening on local mp3 files(audio saved on your pc and not through the internet)?
Try opening Device Manager and open Sound, video, and game controllers Uninstall the conexant entry there and restart your system see if that will work.
If still non try this again

  • Lenovo U410 - Win8 / Unable to access OS + BIOS on statup

    Hi Guys,
I hope that someone can provide some assitance for me please?
About 1 week ago, I was using my Lenovo U410 ultrabook without any issues when I decided to power off as normal. I did this but it wouldn't power off automatically, as the screen would go blank but the power light would remain on but continue running. I left it for about 30 minutes before deciding to force shutdown by holding down the power button.
Then when turning the laptop back on, it would normally take about 10 seconds to reach the login screen but now it was taking about 2 minutes. Eventually it would get to the login screen and I could login normally.
I tried to find some solutions to this but all that was recommended was to make sure I had the latest updates and run a virus scan. I did all the above and everything seem to indicate that it was all updated and no virus/malware detected.
NOW, however after powering down my laptop about 3 days ago, when I boot up I recieve a blue error screen advising the following:
    Recovery
Your PC needs to be repaired
A required deivce isn't connected or can't be accessed.
    Error code: 0xc000000f
You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installtion media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.
This error provides me with options to go to the Statup options (F8), the UEFI Firmware option (Esc) or Start normally (Enter)
Whatever option I select I just get brought back to the above error message. Even when I power up using the Novo button, I get the 4 options or Normal startup, Bios, Boot Menu and System Recovery but each option brings me back to the above error screen.
I don't have any disc or media as nothing came with the laptop, all OEM, and I have no idea what to do?
Any suggestions will be very welcome as I'm at road block and not sure how to go about fixing this?

    Hi
I think that it's the case of bad hdd or else the hdd is not connected properly in the port. So i suggest you contact support if you are under warranty.

My Lenovo U410 microphone(Conexant SmartAudio HD)  isn't working. I tried a number of things from various posts but hard luck. I checked that its configured correctly. The OS is Windows 7. Could somebody help me with steps to check if its an hardware problem. Thanks.

    hi gvirmani,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.
Just to verify, have you tried to record and playback your voice using the built-in Sound Recorder?
If the microphone levels fluctuates but you're not able to hear anything when you try to playback the recording then there's most likely a defect in the microphone and you may need to contact Lenovo for service.
Alternatively, you can try using a USB headset w/ mic or a USB camera w/ mic as a temporary replacement.

    Hey!
Sorry for not posting back, uni got very hectic very quickly.
Didn't have any luck rolling back unfortunately. Had to return it in the end because I was eternally ethernet bound. Sad times but Amazon were fast as hell at refunding me. It's a shame because it's a smashing little laptop, gaming on it was actually pretty **bleep** good.
I heard somewhere that if you open your laptop up and swap the aerial cables around on the WiFi adapter that fixes it but I have no idea whether that source can be trusted or is correct. If you're still in warranty I'd say you're best returning it. (I ended up getting a 17" HP Envy with a tasty i5 and 2GB GT740M off eBay refurbished for £513 delivered)
If you end up shopping for another laptop and you live in the UK I recommend going on eBay and checking out the laptops from America, for some reason they are waaaaaaay cheaper than laptops in the UK. My current laptop cost £980 in John Lewis new: I think I can put up with the US keyboard layout for £470!
Sorry I did't have any better news!
