Lenovo U410 - Win8 / Unable to access OS + BIOS on statup
Hi Guys,
I hope that someone can provide some assitance for me please?
About 1 week ago, I was using my Lenovo U410 ultrabook without any issues when I decided to power off as normal. I did this but it wouldn't power off automatically, as the screen would go blank but the power light would remain on but continue running. I left it for about 30 minutes before deciding to force shutdown by holding down the power button.
Then when turning the laptop back on, it would normally take about 10 seconds to reach the login screen but now it was taking about 2 minutes. Eventually it would get to the login screen and I could login normally.
I tried to find some solutions to this but all that was recommended was to make sure I had the latest updates and run a virus scan. I did all the above and everything seem to indicate that it was all updated and no virus/malware detected.
NOW, however after powering down my laptop about 3 days ago, when I boot up I recieve a blue error screen advising the following:
Recovery
Your PC needs to be repaired
A required deivce isn't connected or can't be accessed.
Error code: 0xc000000f
You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installtion media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer.
This error provides me with options to go to the Statup options (F8), the UEFI Firmware option (Esc) or Start normally (Enter)
Whatever option I select I just get brought back to the above error message. Even when I power up using the Novo button, I get the 4 options or Normal startup, Bios, Boot Menu and System Recovery but each option brings me back to the above error screen.
I don't have any disc or media as nothing came with the laptop, all OEM, and I have no idea what to do?
Any suggestions will be very welcome as I'm at road block and not sure how to go about fixing this?
Hi
I think that it's the case of bad hdd or else the hdd is not connected properly in the port. So i suggest you contact support if you are under warranty.

Lenovo G50-30 Unable to access BIOS settings after Windows recovery
Hi
I recently 'downgraded' a recently purchased Lenovo G50-30 with preinstalled Windows 8.1 to Windows 7 using a UEFI USB install on a GPT partition. I also updated the BIOS from A7CN40WW to the latest A7CN43WW and all was working fine. However, after performing a necessary restore of an system image created using the Windows 7 backup and restore tool, I am suddenly unable to access the BIOS settings, either with the novo button (I do get the menu to select BIOS) or with Fn +F2. All that happens is that I receive a blank screen with a static cursor in the upper left corner. I can however still access the boot menu Fn +F12. This is a particular pain as I obviousl can't select USB 3.0 in BIOS.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.OK, I managed to clear CMOS by disassembling and desoldering a leg off the the RTC battery but to no avail. The problem seems to be that BIOS a7cn43ww itself has somehow been corupted. In theory this should be able to be resolved by a reflash. The trouble here is there seems to be no way to reflash with a current or previous BIOS version, so I'll have to either wait for a newer version or someone may know better.
C'mon Lenovo support this simply isn't good enough. It's a brand new laptop and I'm considering returning it for a refund. -
U410 Touch unable to access BIOS
Hello All,
I purchased a new U410 touch and i am very happy with it.
I attempted to install the Windows 8.1 preview then restored to a backup since i didn't do my research and realized that the RC was almost released...
I changed the bios options to be legacy with uefi first.
On completion of the restore I noticed that the bios is not accessible...
I tried different access methods... f2, shift_ f2, one key recovery and selecting "uefi firmware settings" in troubleshooting for windows 8... all to no avail... then tried a factory reset and the same problem.
Is there any chance that there is a bios update drifting around the internet to reflash the bios?
My next step is to remove the hard drive and ssd to see if there is something wrong in the file system somewhere on the hidden partitions... then to remove the CMOS battery to hopefully reset the BIOS... although i did manage to restore the system to my backup, so i do have a fully working system at the moment... just missing the BIOS settings....
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
added below on 03-sep-2013 22:16 UTC:
I removed the hard disk and ssd and booted up again... still no bios settings...
Anyone know if the bios is compatible with any other machines?
Again... any help appreciated...hi danielsena,
Welcome to the Forums.
Your issue might be similar to this thread.
It's possible that the UEFI firmware in the BIOS got corrupted for some reason and one way to solve it is to reflash the BIOS (see this article - this is for another model but same aspects apply). For now, yYou may need to bring it in to reflash the BIOS as there's no available download yet on the lenovo website.

Can't boot into Windows 8 Single Language 64 bit or access the BIOS screen with the F1 key
I have in my possession right now a Lenovo E49, Model name: 3464
I am unable to access the BIOS settings at POST by pressing the F1 key. Neither does it respond to the Enter key when it displays the message "To interrupt normal startup, Press Enter". I am also unable to boot into the installed OS Windows 8 Single Language 64 bit.
For your informtion, these are the events that led to this issue.
I accessed the BIOS settings at startup using the CHANGE PC SETTINGS option in the CHARMS menu in Windows 8 Single Languge 64 bit followed by GENERAL and ADVANCED STARTUP. Then I chose Restart Now. Windows restarted to produce the startup screen where I chose Troubleshoot, followed by Advanced Options and UEFI Firmware Settings, followed by Restart. This took me to the BIOS settings screen. Once there I changed the boot settings in BIOS so that SECURE BOOT was turnned OFF. It was in ON state prior to that. I also changed the BOOT MODE to LEGACY ONLY. I also changed the BOOT ORDER to boot from DVD drive first followed by the Hard Disk and USB Hard Disk. I saved the changes by pressing F10.
Now the computer is able to boot from the DVD Drive. I tested this by inserting a Windows 7 Repair DVD and also a Linux Live DVD. Mind you, I didn't mke any changes to the Hard Drive. I'm also able to boot from a USB Hard Disk. This too was tested by inserting a bootable USB HD that had both Windows 7 and Windows 8 OS installers. I used only the command prompt feature in the Repair option on the Windows 8 installer to ensure that I could access the partitions on the HD. I did not in any way install Windows 7 or 8 on the HD.
If there is no bootable DVD or USB HD inserted, the laptop is involved in a loop that restarts followed by a message that says the following:
"Intel Undi, PXE-2.1 (build 083)
Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation
This product is covered by one or more of the following patents:
US5, 307, 459, US5, 434, 872, US5, 732, 094, US6, 570, 884, US6, 115, 776 and US6, 327, 625
Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller Series v2.41 (06/08/11)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM."
I am positive that the current state of the BIOS is such that it does not accept any input keys like F1 and F12 at POST so that the BIOS can only be accessed through Change PC Settings in Windows 8 as I had done prior to the occurence of the issue. Since I cannot boot up Windows 8 I cannot use this method to access the BIOS. And since it is not possible at this stage to access the BIOS settings through the F1 key, I believe Lenovo must have surely provided another alternative to enter the BIOS. Can you kindly tell me what other way is there to do this. In earlier days, one could reset the BIOS by shorting the BIOS through pins on the motherboard. Is that possible now? Or is there some Lenovo BIOS utilily that enables me to change the BIOS setting to boot with Legacy and UEFI? Or do I have to install Windows 8.1 64 bit in Legacy mode?I'll see if another member of the team can jump in here and offer more help...
What I might imagine is that you can only access BIOS from a cold boot. Windows 8/8.1 have hybrid shutdown and don't completely shut down the machine normally, so even when it powers off, it isn't fully off and the next boot is not really a cold boot.
Please see this KB. I realize this assumes you can get into windows.
As you suggest, it also seems as though you have set legacy vs UEFI and that may be why your drive is not currently booting. Can you remove the battery on your system? If not, is there a reset hole on the bottom? Removing battery and AC and pressing and holding the power button several times, then re-attach AC and Battery and try to restart and press F1 to get into BIOS. (Not familiar with models that use enter for BIOS).

Hi,
My laptop is X61s. After I did fresh Vista install, and fresh RnR, I'm unable to access to BIOS by hitting the blue ThinkVantage button. It automatically jumps to RnR. There is no other options to enter BIOS.
Please help!
Thanks!

I have a Lenovo u410 i5 Laptop with the following issue
-On Power on: I can hear the fan spinning, along with the hard drive, but screen doesnt post anything (blank)
(It is not a hardware issue, because the screen backlight is on, and it's blank)
-On NOVO power on: Posts: NOVO button menu, followed by the options: Normal startup, BIOS setup, Boot menu, System recovery. Regardless of which option is selected, it posts blank screen as described in first scenario.
I have tried removing hard drive, Flashing BIOS with 4GB flash drive and PHOENIX WINCRISIS, but still nothing.
There is currently no HDD or USB flash stich with an OS that have successfully booted.
PLEASE HELPThe Issue is not the screen or the graphics cards. As I mentioned earlier, upon booting via NOVO button, it posts a menu where I can select one of the following options: Normal start up, Bios set up, Boot select, System recovery.
Regardless of which option i select, it goes to blank (black screen, but the backlight of the screen is on) and nothing posts on screen. I need a detailed step by step description of how to reset BIOS via USB flash drive. -
Unable to access BIOS for Compaq CQ35
Hi,
I have a Compaq Presario CQ35-213TX.
The original hard disk with Windows 7 crashed and I manage to change it and installed Win8.
However, I cannot access the BIOS.
Is the BIOS residing in a hidden partition on the original hard disk which was gone after I change it?
Hope you can teach me how to restore the BIOS.
Thanks.
Derrick
This question was solved.
View Solution.Hi Derrick,
Try the following.
Power down the notebook by holding down the Shift key and clicking Shutdown - this will temporarily prevent a hybrid boot.
When the notebook has shutdown, tap away at the esc key as soon as you press the power button to launch the Start-up Menu and then select the Bios Menu ( f10 ).

I have a Pavillion Elite e9280f desktop. When I start the computer, I'm prompted to press F10 to enter the BIOS settings. However, pressing F10 has no effect - I've pressed it once, I've pressed it repeatedly, I've held the F10 key down - in all cases, the boot process continues after a few seconds and I get "Starting Windows". I'm wondering if this is related to the HP USB keyboard that came with the PC, but mostly I'm wondering how I can access the BIOS settings if pressing the F10 does not work!!
This question was solved.
View Solution.I finally solved the problem of not being able to access the BIOS. First, I realized that my keyboard was plugged into an external USB Hub instead of directly into a USB port on the computer. Moving the keyboard to a USB port on the computer allowed F10 to be recognized and the PC showed the "Entering Setup" message, however, the PC just hung at that point.
I then unplugged all non-essential items from the PC and restarted. This time F10 actually got me into the BIOS settings. By process of elimination, I determined it was the external USB hub that was hanging the PC when it was attempting to enter Setup. I have no idea why that should be a low level issue, but hopefully this post will save someone else many frustrating moments trying to access the BIOS. -
I have a Lenovo U410. The HDD is dying. I want to replace it with an SSD. Here are the problems:
1 - I try to enable BIOS and save my changes? When I boot up again? nothing.
2 - I replaced the HDD with an SSD - black screen.
3 - I cannot access BIOS, and when I install the BIOS update? it still doesn't work.
4 - I am at my end and about to throw this thing into the trash.

Lenovo U410 HARD DRIVE Question
Hey,
So within the first 2 months of owning the U410 the battery just decided to stop charging. I also changed my password and forgot it and had no way to log back in. Reinstalling WIndows wouldn't work because it didn't recognize any drives. Anyways, this was bought from Microsoft so I had zero bloat ware and basically one partition.
When I sent my laptop in to Lenovo to fix the battery they had to reimage the drive to gain access to the account. That being SAID I got the computer back and to my dismay, I only had 466gb and 30gb SSD. I originally had 700gb + 30gb SSD. I believe Lenovo actually changed the hard drive without telling me. What do you guys think?
In the Intel Rapid Storage it says 30gb SS and 466gb HD. I think they are using the standard computer design number for one GB, in metric units (which Lenovo uses) 466gb becomes 500gb. So I really think they changed my hard drive! I'm getting SO PISSED WITH LENOVO.hi hibi49,
Welcome to the Lenovo Community.
Sorry to hear about your trouble. Usually, after sending the unit for repair, you should get a repair order on what has been done on your system. You can check there if they have replaced the HDD. As an alternative, check this website to look-up your repair status.
If it's not indicated in the repair order that they've changed anything and you're seing 500GB HDD + 30GB SSD under BIOS (you can access the BIOS by pressing Fn+F2 or F2 during boot-up), I recommend you contact Lenovo to report the incident so that they could investigate what went wrong with the repair and on how to go about getting your original 700GB HDD.
Hope this helps.

Unable to Access Internet Despite Adapter Showing "Connected".
Hi, I have a Lenovo "G"-Series notebook, Type 4446-38U which has suddenly stopped allowing me to access my internet connections. The PC is only about a month old. It is running XP Professional.
I have three connection options: 1) dial-up (using an onboard HDAudio Soft Data Fax Modem with Smart CP); 2) ethernet or Local Area Connection (using an onboard Broadcom Netlink Fast Ethernet); and 3) wireless (using an onboard Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN) -- none of these components are showing that they have conflicts/problems in the System Properties/Device Manager.
At my home, which is located in a rural area where I can only get dial-up, I tried checking my e-mail last week (with Mozilla Thunderbird), but received an error notice stating that the e-mail server could not be found; it was the same issue, when I tried to get Norton virus updates (Internet Security 2009), XP updates on the Microsoft website (using Microsoft Updates with Internet Explorer), and simply accessing the web (using Mozilla Firefox) -- i.e., "Server Not Found." The odd thing is that I can not only hear the connection being made by the modem, but can also see that the device is 'Connected', when I check the connection in Control Panel/Network Connections. The following day at my office, I checked the other connection options (ethernet & WiFi), and found that I had the same problem -- i.e., they were shown as "Connected" in Control Panel/Network Connections, but I was unable to access anything on the web (e.g., e-mail, Google, virus/Microsoft updates, etc.). It's as if there is something blocking the internet connection to these programmes/utilities.
When I ran the Microsoft Networking Troubleshooter ('Diagnose Network Configuration & Run Automated Networking Tests), all the Network Adapters were shown as having passed. Ditto, when I ran the "Test a TCP/IP Configuration Using the Ping Command" -- pinging 127.0.0.1, the results showed 4 packets sent and 4 received.
I spent several hours on the phone with Lenovo Tech Support to no avail, and their instruction that I uninstall Norton Internet Security made no difference either. When they instructed me to open a Command Prompt and ping 192.168.1.1, the results showed that there were 4 packets sent and 4 received. When I was instructed to ping the IP Address for the wireless adapter, the results showed 4 packets send and 4 received. When I was instructed to ping www.google.com, the results showed that the ping request could not find the host www.google.com. Lenovo Tech Support stated that there was nothing further they could do, and that I needed to use a utility to set everything back to factory specs (i.e., have a utility programme erase everything on the hard drive and reinstall XP ... and even then I was told that there was no guarantee that would fix things, meaning that the PC would then have to be sent into their repair depot). Before I do this, I was hoping that someone here might know as to what's going on with my connection problems and how it could be fixed, without having to erase everything.
I would appreciate any insight or advice anyone might have. Thanks so much!
~ JackI did do a complete uninstall of Norton (i.e., didn't save any of the settings), but that didn't resolve the connection problem. I also turned off Microsoft's firewall as well, once Norton was uninstalled (it had been turned off, when Norton was installed, and once Norton was uninstalled, MS firewall defaulted back to an on/active status).
I also forgot to mention in my initial description of the problem and actions taken thus far to try and correct it, that I additionally tried the "ping" procedure described in paragraph five above in Windows Safe Mode with Networking, but was still unable to connect to the internet. -
No access to BIOS on W530 after W7 64bit installation | W7 boots and works fine
Hello L'users
My fancy problem with my W530 DOS machine 2441-B32. Age: 2 weeks.
Bios was current (1.11) when I started installing W7 64bit. Before installation, I changed the BIOS setting to UEFI.
OS Installation seems to be fine, no error messages from the OS or ThinkVantage so far.
Funny is that I cannot access the BIOS any more.
Here comes the plot.
First message for about 5 seconds during boot procedure is:
"To interrupt normal startup, press Enter"
Problem: Pressing Enter does not interrupt the "normal" startup.
Second message for about a second is:
System BIOS shadowed
Video BIOS shadowed
BIOS Version: G5ET33W (1.11 )
Press <F1> to BIOS Setup.
Problems:
Pressing F1 does not lead to setup.
I did not manually shadow anything.
BIOS was not secured from me with a pwd.
Third message for about half a second is:
ThinkVantage Active Protection sensor diagnostics start. /
The fourth message is the start message from a booting W7.
What I have tried:
(1)
BIOS Update Utility
g5uj07us.exe
Executed under W7 says
BIOS image file is same as BIOS ROM
An update is not necessary at this time.
So it seems that the BIOS is accessible by this utility.
(2)
Starting from the DVD-ROM is not possible, I tried to boot from the DOS bootable BIOS FLASH CD, an OpenSuse DVD, DBAN.
I was thinking about erasing the HDD in an external USB docking, booting the W530 from the DOS bootable BIOS FLASH CD without a HDD installed, restoring the BIOS and trying another W7 install.
But: This is nearly the same what I did when I installed W7 the first time.
Any ideas? Does anybody here had the same problem?
Thanx!
Kottan

Solved!
Go to Solution.Hello,
The next BIOS release will solve this problem. It seems it has not been posted to the support website yet. Could you please e-mail me at [email protected]? I will reply on Monday with a link to the BIOS version you need. Sorry for this trouble. -
Hello, this is the 3rd time I have this problem. Every time after a major Windows (mine is Vista) update R&R does no longer work.
When I start to create a full image back-up I get some 2 times 5 error messages saying something like: Unable to access or copy to/from
5 times the message z:\tvtos\winpe.wim error 1393 = disk structure problem er something
5 times the message z:\Preload\drivers\E1e5032.SYS Error 5 no access
I may or may not get a message: " Fcopier MFC application is not functioning" (during the copy to/from z: ),
then after 30 minutes the backup gets cancelled automatically.
I assume the Z disk is a virtual memory disk.
I had stopped my virusprotection, firewall software.
I have run this as Administartor
The problem is the same when I run the R&R as Administrator ( I am).
Then after tens of minutes the backup operation gets automatically cancelled.
I have not been able to find a fix for this problem, but before it was fixed by a Lenovo R&R update.
Thanks,Lenovo Toolbox Warning:
No system backup has been made for the past 212 days.. and counting
I really do not understand this Lenovo support attitude. How can anybody that is customer focused and enjoys his/her job, just fully ignore a customer problems ??
Only one retired employee that is interested (thanks for that) but can not do much. -

Any help please?
Solved!
Go to Solution.hi Moh27,
Thanks for Using Lenovo community Forums!
Inside BIOS under boot tab you will find there UEFI Boot you will need to disable that
then u need to move the USB HDD: GENERIC USB HDD to number 1.
You can do that by highlighting the USB HDD: GENERIC USB HDD and pressing F5 or F6 to move it up
-or-
Highlight the things on top of the USB HDD: GENERIC USB HDD then put them down still using the F5 or F6 to move them down, do it one by one till the USB HDD is on top.
Just make once you got the USB HDD: GENERIC USB HDD to 1 hit F10 to save and exit changes.
Hope this helps,
