Lenovo Win 7 Pro Upgrade - Recovery Partition?

If this has been covered already then I apologize in advance, but it would be appreciated if someone would respond to the following:
I recently upgraded my T61 to Windows 7 Pro using the two-disc set from Lenovo. To preserve my original XP pro setup, I used a new Seagate 250 GB hard drive for the Windows 7 upgrade. One of the first steps of the installation was an automatic setup of two partitions (one of 232 GB and another of about 18 GB). Then the process loaded the Windows 7 operating system on the larger one. The final step was to use the campanion disc to upload Lenovo specific software (ThinkVantage Toolbox). Using Toolbox, I installed the appropriate drivers from Lenovo's website and Windows 7 pro works just fine. However, it's not clear if restoration files were loaded to the drive's smaller partition as one gets when he/she gets installs the Lenovo version of Windows XP pro. Moreover, the Windows 7 upgrade does not seemed to provide Lenovo-specific wallpaper, etc. as with Windows XP. In short, can one restore Windows 7 from a recovery partition as is possible with the Lenovo's version of XP Pro?

Welcome to the forum!
The answer to your question is yes, recovery partition does get created during the upgrade process/clean installation. If you decide on installing Win 7 on old drive then make sure to create recovery discs for XP in advance because during the upgrade Win 7 set from lenovo deletes old recovery partition.

Lenovo Twist - How do you copy Win 8 Pro onto recovery partition?

I upgraded my Lenovo Twist (3347-4HU) from Win 8 to Win 8 Pro with Windows Media Center (WMC). How do I copy the newly purchased operating system and WMC to my HDD recovery partition so that if I ever have to do a restore, it will restore Win 8 Pro with WMC and not the original copy of Win 8 that came on the computer? My concern is if a recovery is done from the factory recovery partition, I will lose my upgrade that I purchased.

Another option would be to make a full-drive backup to an external HDD. You can use the oddly named "Windows 7 File Recovery" feature to make the backup.
It's probably a good idea to do that on a regular basis.

Satellite Pro L300D Recovery Partition

Hi,
How do I start the recovery program using the recovery partition? The manual states that I should press and hold down the 0 (zero) key while powering on the laptop. I've tried that, holding the zero-key down but then the computer starts "screaming" at me until I release the key, and then Windows tries to boot. Any ideas?

are you holding zero above P? if it doesnt work use the recovery media you were supposed to make. if you didnt make them you can order online

HP Spectre x360 - Upgrade Recovery Partition to Windows10

I have an HP Spectre x360 purchased in April 2015. At the time Windows 8.1 was the latest OS and as such the shipped version of Windows on the laptop was Windows 8.1. Now that Windows 10 is out, I've updated, however I assume the recovery partition still contains an 8.1 image. How can I get an updated Windows 10 recovery partition? I would also like to make a recovery Windows 10 USB Key or DVD. Thanks,- Edirol

Ok I fixed it! What I was doing was: In Windows setup, finding the drive, formatting it and then installing Windows - computer wouldnt boot What I did to fix it! Deleting all the partitions so that there was just one partition with unallocated space and installing Windows on that. I thought you had to format the partiton first, but it appears WIndows setup will do this itself Bryan

Lenovo miix 3 lost recovery after windows 10 upgrade ?

I did upgrade with media creation tool, i select "keep nothing", now I have clean activated windows 10. In my disk managment a have c: drive, two small partitions,and also have recovery partition about 5gb size, but when I try to select widnows recovery from tablet boot options, I got a error , "Your PC needs to be repaired A required device isn't connected or can't be accessed. Error code: 0xc0000225" Is that win 8.1 recovery partition or windows 10?

Recovery partition or not?

My Lenovo T60 has a recovery partition located at the end of its 80GB drive, named SERVICEV001 (a primary FAT 32 partition). I recently purchased a second T60 notebook which is almost identical (the only major difference is that it has a CDRW optical drive rather than a DVD rewriter), but that machine does not have such a recovery partition.
As far as I can remember, my original machine did have the recovery partition as it came out of the box.
Is there any way I can create such a recovery partition on the new machine? If not, what is the best way of ensuring I can recover major disk problems without it?

Thanks for the tip about Ghost. I actually already take a weekly Ghost image from my original T60 (at least for two of the three normal partitions - the third one is just data, and I back these up on an ad-hoc basis).
But I really wanted to get the second machine to the same state as the first one. (To be honest, I am not quite sure how the recovery partition really works, notably whether it would still work if I were to clone the entire drive to a second drive of a different size).

May I remove without any risk the two recovery partitions in win 8.1 Pro 64bit and what is the hidden reserved partition?

I have this partition situation on my unic disc C & D for Windows 8.1 Pro at 64bits (see fig. 1)
and this is the same list from diskpart:
My first question is: may I remove partitions 1 and 5 without any risk?
My second question is what is the reserved partition 3 and why is not mentioned in Disc Manager?

I am not entirely convinced about your answer.
Yes the first partition of 800 MB may be the OEM original partition, (by ASUS containing Win 8.0) that I upgraded with a disk to Windows 8.0 Pro, and than upgraded to Win 8.1 Pro from Windows Store.
Now I made a full backup image of factory settings (win 8.0) on a USB key and now, after the upgrade to win 8.0 pro and then to win 8.1 this backup copy is useless.
The second partition is a system EFI partition and because the disk is a GPT basic disk and not a MBR, that partition is where (is that correct?) are system and boot info together with the hidden reserved third partition.
About the fourth recovery partition I suppose it was created when I created and installed Win 8.1 Preview on a VHD disk with double booting menu (that I deleted after the release of Windows 8.1).
This is why I asked if the two recovery partitions can be safely removed.
So, with this more info, may you review you answer and confirm or give me more details about all.

After upgrading from win 7 - win 8, do I really need the win 7 recovery partition?

I'm a happy camper after upgrading my HP Spectre XT from win 7 to win 8 (Win 8 upgrade offer). The 128GB SSD disks just makes everything so smooth and fast.
However I am abit annoyed with the Win 7 recovery partition that still uses 20 GB of my total 128GB space.
I have tried searching the forums, as well as the www for any good answers, but I end up more confused.
So I am asking the community some questions that interests me, and hopefully you can provide me with some meaningsful answers
1. Can I now delete my win 7 recovery partition, and if so what is the most effiecient and safe way to do it?
2. Is there a a good way to make sure that if (heaven forbid) something would happen, I still would be able to recover my notebook preferably to win 8, and not the preinstalled OEM win 7?
3. Of course the Spectre XT has no optical drive, so if its doable I might need to make an win 8 recovery partition in the end. Is it possible?

You can use Windows builtin Disk Management to delete the partition, or EaseUS software. Both procedures are outlined at EaseUS site:

As for a Recovery option after deleting, look at System Imaging which is builtin Windows 8 also.You need an external USB hdd for this.

Can't recover from recovery partition with OneKey after disastrous Win 8.1 upgrade

I have a U410 that is only a couple months old. A few days ago I decided to take the plunge and accept the free upgrade to Windows 8.1.
Big mistake.
SInce the upgrade, I've had a slew of problems ranging from programs not running to hard disk integrity checks every time I restart the computer. I've already refreshed the computer (wiping all programs), with no luck. Now I'd like to restore from the recovery partition. However, when I press the onekey button I get the same behavior described here, and can't boot to system recovery mode.
Based on some of the posts in this thread, I gather that any change in the partition sizes pretty much breaks the onekey software, but that sometimes restoring the factory partition sizes can cause it to work again. I haven't knowingly made any changes to the partition sizes, yet looking at disk management I am seeing more partitions than I would have expected (not sure if they were there before the upgrade since I've never looked before). I would like to know if there's any way I can regain access to the recovery partition--and if not, what my best bet is for undoing the damage the 8.1 upgrade did to my OS.

Dang, that's dissapointing. I did see it mentioned elsewhere that recovery discs are only $16 though. I had thought they'd be $100+ or something, so that aint so bad. I'll get on that.

1. Used Lenovo Recovery to bring Win7 back to factory state
2. Created disc image using Acronis True Image 2013
3. Deleted Lenovo Recovery partition
4. Created new partition for Windows 8 (with intention to run as dual-boot)
5. Uninstalled all programs recommended by Lenovo here:

6. Purchased Win 8 Upgrade digital download
7. Ran install from c: drive on same Windows 7 partition. Install failed and Windows 7 OS restored.

9. Ran install from DVD drive on new partition for Windows 8. Install failed.
10. Ran install from DVD drive on same Windows 7 partition. Install failed.
Comments:
-each install run took hours to run through, not minutes
-most times, I get to black screen with blue Win8 logo and circular thinking icon until system goes into suspend mode. Restarting machine brings me back to black screen with logo.
-when attempting install from DVD on new partition, received BSOD with error code. Pressed F9 to boot Windows 7.
After hours of searching the web for an answer, NOTHING.
Please help.

On my T510, I burned the disk and shut off the computer. Then I booted from the disk and it entered setup. When you get there DO NOT CLICK "Upgrade: Install Windows...". REPEAT: DO NOT CLICK
Instaed, click "Custom: Install windows only". Then it will give you a list of partitions to install to. Click your partition, click format, and click install or next or whatever. The computer is almost flawless without any lenovo drivers.
I timed the install, and it took almost 13 minutes to get from entering the serial to the initial setup (where you pick your email and stuff) and after completing that in a reasonable amount of time the computer was at the start screen (usable) by 18 minutes. This is was on a 7200rpm hdd so it should go much faster for you.

Win 7 Pro to Win 8 Pro Upgrade Help needed!

So basically I need somebody to walk me through this like I'm computer illiterate, which I'm generally not, but hesitant to get started without actually understanding the whys and hows.
I bought a Thinkpad S440 with preinstalled WIndows 8 Pro.
It has the Win8Pro sticker at the bottom and the five recovery disks.
Now, the store told me that Lenovo had downgraded it to Windows 7 Pro, so this is what I'm running currently.
I want to upgrade it first to Windows 8 Pro and then to Windows 8.1 Pro (unless I can do it all at once?) Clean install preferable.
It does not have an optical drive, so the Recovery disks which state they can be used to upgrade are pretty much useless. I don't have access to an optical drive anyway, so I can't create iso images of them either.
Also, I don't have a Windows 8 Pro Product key, because apparently it's embedded in the BIOS.
I'm at a loss as how to go about this thing. I bought a Windows 8 Pro machine, I want to be able to use Windows 8.1 Pro. I mean, it should be possible, right? The stickers and purchase order all state Win8 Pro as the OS.
P.S. There's also a 20GB partition on my SSD for Lenovo Repair & Recovery? Is that usable somehow? Why is it there?
Advice? Walkthroughs? I'm completely frustrated with the lack of Product Key.
I've done several upgrades and clean installs on previous computers, but I've never felt limited like this....

You might not have to do that, but nowadays USB optical drives are very inexpensive and you should be able to find a drive even where you are located.
But, back to the original question. Seeing as how Windows 8 was preloaded and your machine was downgraded to Windows 7, your recovery partition should contain the Windows 8 OS. I say, "should".
Have you loaded anything into the Windows 7 OS that you don't want to lose? Loading Windows 8 might be as simple as booting into Rescue and Recovery and returning the machine to factory settings. Or, just go into Rescue and Recovery from the desktop and return the machine to factory settings. Once you are in there you should be able to see what OS Recovery is going to install.
Only thing is if you don't like Windows 8, you will have to jump through a few hoops to get Windows 7 installed back onto your machine.
I would suggest getting yourself an external hard drive if you don't already have one and doing a backup of the current OS before you start so you could return the machine back the way it is now if something messes up. No matter what happens, down the road you will want to do current backups on a regular basis anyway so you need to have something to do those backups on.

Lenovo Yoga 3 14 recovery and Windows 10 upgrade

I have a few questions regarding Lenovo Yoga 3 14 recovery and Windows 10 upgrade (should be generic questions that apply to other models as well):
1# Will the Windows 10 update and activation change in any way the Win8.1 OEM serial key stored in BIOS? Is there any chance that any software changes that BIOS OEM key (like malware or similar)?
2# After updating to Windows 10, if I put the USB recovery pen drive (created in Win8.1), will I be able to restore the Win8.1 version (factory restore), and successfully activate it and use it without issues?
3# On a clean drive (without any partitions, like for instance if I buy a new one), if I use the same USB recovery pen drive (created in Win8.1) to do a factory reset, will it re-create all partitions, including the recovery partition one?

1) Run the Win 10 installation and choose "Upgrade Windows" option. Windows 10 will be installed and it will be activated.
The chance of any software changing the OEM key is insignificant.
2) Yes, you can recover Win 8.1 successfully. No need to activate it, it will be auto-activated.
3) I dont have experience with this but reading around the forum I have seen that using a recovery drive on a new HDD may not install windows and re-create partitions.
The recovery partition is the hardest to re-create on a new HDD, even you are able to re-create it the NOVO button usually doesnt work.

Windows 8 upgrade killed recovery partition

I have been the proud owner of an HP Pavilion dv6t-6c00 CTO Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC running Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit. I made the HP Receovery Media DVD's when I 1st got my laptop.
I took advantage of the Windows 8 Pro upgrade option from Microsoft and after the upgrade (down grade) discovered that the Windows 8 Pro upgrade toasted my HP Receovery Partition. Note: It's still there but I get a F11 boot error and this is the HP Recovery software status:
I booted from the HP Recovery DVD's and restored the computer to factory - however, I am still left with the above disaster. I finally relented and am purchasing the HP Recovery Disk Set.
WHY DOESN'T the HP Recovery Disks I made Restore my computer to FACTORY status?

Thank you - deleted all partitions and booted from my recovery DVD's - all is as it should be!
I always left the broken partitions intact believing that some of HP's configuration data was there - but here was my solution:
0. I created an Acronis True Home backup for my C: drive - this is my backup software
1. I downloaded the free AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition 5.2 from http://www.disk-partition.com/
2. Burned the CD from the iso file
3. Rebooted to run AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition 5.2
4. In AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition 5.2 I deleted all partitions on my disk
5. Rebooted the HP Recovery DVDs
6. The HP Recovery DVDs restored the laptop from this state - the laptop rebooted several times during the recovery. Then I was at the Laptop Setup Wizard
7. I rebooted to run the Acronis True Home backup
8. In acronis I restored the entire Windows Partition drive
9. I rebooted and all Function key including F11 works as it should
10. I rebooted and held my breath as the laptop booted into Windows 7 Home Edition and I was presented my login screen
11. I logged in and I was exactly where I left off - YEAH!
If you don't have Acronis or other backup software - I recommend AOMEI Backupper 1.6 from http://www.backup-utility.com/free-backup-software.html

2007 2.6GHz 17 Inch Macbook Pro (MacBookPro3,1) Missing Recovery Partition?

My MacBook Pro 2007 2.6GHz 17 Inch is missing a recovery partition. I was told it is supposed to be added automatically when you reinstall/update your mac os x. I recently did a fresh install of Mavericks. It was missing. I did another fresh install, still missing. Then I restored data and did a non-fresh install. Still Missing. I kinda want to be able to track the computer. It has the original hard drive, and all the other components are original as well, except for the battery, which exploded, apple replaced it under warranty a while ago, and the RAM. I upgraded the RAM today, but it didn't work before either. It is genuine OWC RAM. (The same kind apple uses) Do I need to manually create one? Should I downgrade the OS and then upgrade to Mavericks again? Is it a problem that apple is going to fix?
I did make the mistake of erasing the entire hard drive rather than just the main partition. However, according to apple, this should not have made a difference, as if it is missing it is supposed to be created with the installation.

There are two versions of recovery: the regular which will download the currently installed system and internet recovery which will allow you to wipe a drive and reinstall the originally installed system (as long as that was Lion or later). Both of them require that the recovery partition be installed - that is what allows you to boot from it (with key commands) and that you have an internet connection.
