Lenovo X201 Supervisor password

Hi , ive forgot the supervisor password for my lenovo X201 , i need to reinstall windows but cannot due to the external dvd rw being in the "excluded devices" section.
I have been having a read around and so far i think my best bet is to pay for a service to remove the password on ebay.
Link removed by Moderator.
Although its not for the x201 i had a try and the board is completely different (even though he says it will work reading the comments.
I was wondering if there was any other way of doing it other than buying one of the devices that read the chip.
Thankyou

  • Removing Supervisor Password via WMI?

Hello guys, I'm trying to remove our supervisor password from our computers using the WMI-interface (described here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-68488). It works fine when trying to change the password using the provided script, but the syntax doesn't allow me to enter "nothing" as a password. Is there some way I can disable the supervisor password-option using WMI? I noticed that there's a vbs-script for loading default settings included in the package but that doesn't work with a password protected BIOS. Any tips or ideas? Thanks in advance,Johan

Attached is a script to do what you request.  I made this by modifying SetSupervisorPassword.vbs (which is inside the zip file at the URL you linked) to change the current password to <blank> which disables the supervisor password feature.
You can compare SetSupervisorPassword.vbs to this new script to see exactly what I did.
    Hope this helps.
PS - loading default settings doesn't reset or disable BIOS passwords.

  • Is this thinkpad r61 worth the money and is the supervisor password removable

Hi everyone I found this r61 on eBay to replace my dead t60 :-( anyway I thought id ask you guys before I spent most of my money again from what I can see the only problem is the supervisor password is it removable? It also looks like a 15.4"

    thank you for looking :-)
    My main Thinkpad - T400, 2768-BA8, core 2 duo t8300, 8GB RAM, ATI HD3470, 700GB HDD drive.

    No reason to be sorry.
Please do note though, as George mentions, discussions about security feature circumventions, which include password hacks/etc, aren't allowed per the Community Rules.
Since you haven't purchased the machine yet, you should ask the seller if they will be removing any BIOS passwords (power-on, HDD, supervisor) prior to shipping the unit. If they can't, or won't, the best advice is to stay away from the machine altogether. All of that said, the seller claims that the machine is only being sold for parts. So you'll want to keep that in mind.

  • Lenovo X201, Xorg, modesetting problem

    This is a new model Lenovo X201 http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:X201Type 3626 (Core i5).
Did a fresh installation from 2010.05-core-i686 CD with x86_64. I had the dreaded "dark screen" problem caused by kernel mode setting switching off the backlight! I can boot only with the 'nomodeset' kernel boot parameter.
The problem persists after 'pacman -Syu' 2.6.34-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMT Sat Jun 19 00:07:49 CEST 2010 x86_64. As a result I can't startx, the log says - using xf86-video-intel driver, no xorg.conf:
(II) VESA: driver for VESA chipsets: vesa
    (--) using VT number 7
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 00@00:02:0
(WW) Falling back to old probe method for vesa
(EE) intel(0): no kernel modesetting driver detected
    (II) UnloadModule: "intel"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration
    Fatal server error:
    no screens found
Obviously, I have to boot without the 'nomodeset' parameter.
How should I progress? Compiling a more recent kernel? Which version? What configuration parameters are needed?

I have an X61T, and I had a dark screen problem for the longest time. I had to guess at when the login prompt showed up and enter my username and password 'blind'. The monitor turned off halfway through the boot sequence and turned on again after I started X. Trying to turn KMS off gave the same kind of error that you got about usable configurations. Perhaps we had the same problem? If not, maybe this will help somebody else with a dysfunctional screen.
I fixed it by leaving vga=xxx out of the kernel line of my menu.lst and keeping KMS on (I think it's on by default in the default arch linux kernel). Yes, I compiled my own kernel with i915 and intel_agp, but that didn't fix the problem for me. Here's the relevant line:
    kernel /vmlinuz26-x61t root=/dev/sda5 ro

  • Lenovo G570 bios password

I set a Supervisor Password and an User Password for a Lenovo G570 Laptop, running an INSYDEH20 BIOS. Later I decided to exclude the passwords, so I entered in Setup press F2 and I selected Clear Password (something like this). Now when I turn on my laptop the message "Enter Current Password" appears. I put my old password... "invalid password", just press Enter... "invalid password" . I didn't forget the password, I just wanted to remove the password and now I don't know what's happening. How should I do for this matter?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The issue was solved. I was using the numpad and when I put the password I used the numbers in "regular keyboard". I didn't know it's difference to digit a 9, for example, using the numpad and the "regular keyboard".

  • LENOVO N500 SUPERVISOR & BIOS PASWORD BLOCKED

    Hello,
I tried to remove the supervisor password in BIOS by writing the old password, pushing "ENTER" button twicely and then reboot my laptop. After that I still see the password request, but it is not related with my old password and blank password. So my laptop data is bloked.
    Sorry for bad english.
    Thank you for information.

there is a lenovo help page for lost or forgotten passwords.
if the password you have forgotten is not one which can be reset, your options are to remember the password or get the motherboard and/or hard drive replaced. ( contact lenovo support line - call : +370 5 278 66 00 -)
because these passwords are used to protect users' valuable laptops and information, the community rules forbid discussion of ways to defeat them, so I'm locking this thread.

  • T420 BIOS locked with supervisor password on *new* T420

I bought a T420 (type 4236-5H7) online and was surprised to find that the system tried to deploy USAF SDC (Standard Desktop Configuration) on first boot. I cancelled the process and the harddrive was subsequently erased, such that the Windows boot manager gives an error.
No big deal so far, as I intended to reinstall Windows myself anyways. Much more annoyingly, however, is that the BIOS is protected by a supervisor password right out of the box (and no mention whatsoever of what this password might be). In other words, I cannot change the boot list necessary to reinstall the operating system.
Has anyone any suggestions on how I can obtain this supervisor password? And secondly, why the **** does Lenovo ship USAF SDC on a normal consumer product? Any help is appreciated, as I'd like to turn this shiny new brick into something useful.

Lenovo wouldn't set any passwords from factory if it was intended for the end consumers, or set the machine in the manner you described, unless it is a corporate or government overstock. You should ask Buy.com where they got the machine, where they got the stock from, they can chase it up with Lenovo, since they will be a channel partner.
Lenovo wouldn't have put any passwords on your machine if it was an end consumer product. There is no master passwords that you can override the current passwords with.
The only solution is for full motherboard replacement (at your own expense).
I am just curious if you are having this issue with the laptop, why did you forward it to Switzerland and not have this issue dealt with properly?
Do you still have all the purchase detail of this machine? i.e. serial number and more importantly the tax invoices?
Since you bought the machine from Buy.com, the sale contract is between you and Buy.com, Lenovo is only the supplier to Buy.com (if that is where they purchased the machine from) and not the direct supplier of the product to you. So you really need to get Buy.com to get this sorted out, Lenovo can't do much for you.
My suspicion is that Buy.com may have sourced the machine from an alternative source, i.e. corporate or government overstock, and then sold it through their channel. If they got it from government overstock what you described can occur, as these machines would be setup in a manner ready for use by the government agency that deploys this standard. In which case the Buy.com would still be your only source of assistance you would get, but given that you don't have the machines on hand, even they can't help you much (as most likely they would offer a refund for your purchase).

  • Tecra A11-1EG - cannot access BIOS after setting supervisor password

Hello, I wonder if anyone can help ?
We have just started to put a supervisor password onto our Tecra A11 laptops so our pupils cannot set passwords on the hard drive etc.
To get into the BIOS and set a BIOS password, we press F2 as the machine starts.
We then go into the security option, then supervisor password.
Having entered the password we want to use twice, we press F10 to save etc.
The machine starts ok and goes in to windows without a hitch.
The problem we have now is that we cannot get back into the bios at all.
As the machine starts we press the F2 key as before but unlike previously the screen just remains blank and the 'Toshiba leading Innovation >>>' screen no longer appears.
If we keep our finger on the F" key or keep pressing it the laptop just restarts without ever getting to the BIOS screen where I assume we will get asked for the supervisor password we set earlier?
Is there another key we should be pressing as the laptop starts ?
I should add we have added a supervisor password for the BIOS security screen on three of our laptops and all three have the same issue.
    Thanks
    Steve

I think this should be useful for you:
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB0B032D0000R01.htm
In some cases you need to press the "INS" key while Toshiba logo appears.
Then a prompt for the Supervisor Password would appear and if the password is certified then the BIOS could be entered by pressing the "F2" key.

  • Satellite Pro A200 - Supervisor Password Utility Setup fails

    Hello,
I own a Satellite Pro A200-PSAE7E and a retail license for Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit (with SP1) installed on it.
Before installing Vista, I upgraded the BIOS to the most recent version available on the Toshiba site (http://it.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/vista_drivers.jsp?service=IT).
    BIOS version is now 2.20-WIN32
After the successful installation of the operating system, I started installing the various drivers and utilities downloading them from the Toshiba site.
When I try to install the "Supervisor Password Utility" the setup fails showing a message box which says "The serial number is invalid".
Same problem with another setup: "Flash Cards Support Utility"
Does anybody know how to solve this problem and which serial number is invalid?
    Thanx in advance,
    mme000

    Hi,
You are having the same trouble as other people on these forums.
If you want to fix it yourself, you would need to look at the disk image on the disk that came with your toshiba, figure out which version of the application was included on that, you might be able to find that version on the website for a different model and different country (for instance, on the canadian website, for a totally different computer than my UK computer, i found a version of the flashcards support utility that works with mine.) But i don't think its possible to see what's on the restore disk without instaling it, i.e. wiping everything off your harddrive in the process.
It really is extremely disappointing and frustrating. If anyone knows a way to communicate directly with toshiba about this problem without having to pay some sort of support fee, I would be very interested to hear about it. It seems noone from toshiba actually reads anything from these forum. It seems like a real wasted resource to me....

  • Lenovo X201 external monitor resolution issue

    Hi,
I'm having issues connecting my Lenovo X201 through the docking station -> display port -> Dell 3011.  The native resolution for the monitor is 2560x1600.  However, I currently can only set the resolution to 1920x1080 (ugly!) as any high resolution results in the monitor entering power save mode.
I'm using xrandr to set the video mode in my .xinitrc (running dwm).  This creates a good Xinerama config for dwm.
    I'm currently using the line
    xrandr --output DP1 --mode 1920x1080 --above LVDS1
to set my resolution.  When I change to --auto or --mode 2560x1600, or 1920x1200 etc I get the blank screen on the external monitor.  I'm using the xf86-video-intel-sna driver package (I tried the -uxa as well to no avail).
    Any hints?

I was able to get it by having arandr help generate the config, here's the solution that worked for me:
xrandr --output HDMI1 --off --output LVDS1 --auto --right-of DP1 --output DP1 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --auto --output VGA1 --off

  • Can't Access Oracle EBS with a Lenovo X201 laptop

My Company runs Oracle E-Business Suite version 11.5.10.2. I recently had to get a new laptop (Lenovo X201). I can log onto the Oracle Application Home Page and select a responsibility, but when I select an operation, like Invoice Inquiry in the Payables Module for instance, I get the following message, "This tab has been recovered. A problem with this web page has caused Internet Explorer to close and reopen the tab." The laptop is running the XP operating system and Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702. Our IT staff can't figure out the problem. They looked at all the usual cause for problems, like pop-up blockers, etc. They also spoke to Lenovo Support without finding a resolution. We experienced a similar problem with Dell laptops that they were able to resolve. Has anyone experienced this problem with a recent-vintage Lenovo computer and found a solution?

Can you find any details about the error in Apache log files and/or Sun JRE Console Window?
If the issue is reproducible, please make sure you meet the minimum requirements as per these docs.

  • Satellite L670-134 How to delete Supervisor password?

Hey, i have an epic problem.
I was with some friends in a w-lan net and then some Trojan were placed to every of our Laptops. Now he took my administrator rights and set an Supervisor Password.
Now i cant use my Laptop anymore.
Can u help me pls fast ?

You know what supervisor password is?
The supervisor password is only to secure Bios settings and Hardware setup.
Mostly set by an administrator so a user can't change Bios settings.
The user may start and shut down the notebook however he wants and he is able to work with the machine normally - he just needs the supervisor password to enter the Bios or Hardware setup.
So its kind of security and if you dont know this password, you can not delete this
In such case you have to contact the Toshiba ASP in order to remove this ;(

  • Satellite A500-14L: Supervisor Password Utility & Remote Command Manager

    Hi,
I just installed Windows 7 Home Premium *x64* on my A500-14L (PSAM3E-02N008FR) and all went smooth, even the TVAP and flashcards install. Unfortunately, I have a problem with the following utilities (latest versions found on Toshiba website) :
    - Supervisor Password Utility
    - Remote Command Manager
I installed both of them but I can't find them in my start menu!
There is no install error but it's like they are not installed at all.
Can someone please help me on this matter ? Thanks in advance.
    Aramys

    Hi
For Supervisor Password Utility I recommend checking the Toshiba Assist.
In Secure you should see the Supervisor Password Utility.
The Remote Control Manager improves the support for a remote control on your computer.
Im not sure if you could access this application but if yes then you should check it in control panel.

  • Supervisor password and windows restoring problem

    hello everyone ,
I bought my toshiba satellite L755 5 months ago but the windows just crashed down and when I try restoring the windows factory setting by holding the 0 button while turning on the laptop it requires a supervisor password which I didn't set !
please help me what should I do ?!

    Hi Alex,
    any chance that the password (WPA or WPA2 I assume) contains special keys/characters like * / and/or also international ones like ä ü ö ß ?
These can be troublesome with using different operating systems.
Such characters can be coded differently on different operating systems like OSX or Windows so that the pass-phrase isn't compatible anymore.
Since the PSK is stored in the router, using such a PSK with different operating systems can lead to a scenario where you can connect to the router with OSX but not with Windows, for example.
I personally avoid such special characters and instead use the full length of the PSK and mix numbers and upper/lower characters.
    Regards
    Stefan
