Lenovo x201/x201s 16GB (2x 8GB) RAM support

Hello everyone,
I have a X201s notebook - which is a very decent one with i7, 8GB and 256GB Samsung PM800 SSD.
I have been running on 8GB since day one in 2010 when I got it. Now I need more RAM and tried to upgrade to 16Gb but the 8GB sticks I bought froM GEIL or G.Skill just does not do. I have read that Corsair produce similar results.
The BIOS does recognise the RAM and show it as 16GB, however Windows 7 stops booting where the graphical part should appear (the flying balls), so does Windows 8 when I try to install it. No MS OS can be installed either.
Windows Memory Check runs but VERY slow. I would say it would take a month for it to complete.
Tried both BIOS 1.36 and 1.38.
Question to Lenovo - any plans to support 16Gb for X201?
So far I seen people tested GEIL, G.Skill, OWC, Corsair - neither of them had any luck.
Thanks.
Question to all - anyone got it running with 16GB?

Hello Kromulator,
I don't think the restriction of the RAM is due to the processor.
The X201/X201s can not support more than 8Gb of memory due to restrictions.  More than likely these restrictions are due to the motherboard.
http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/ltwbook.pdf
But as you can see on the link I have provided on the X201 section toward the bottom, the Max RAM is 8Gb.
BIOS will recognize more RAM but can not do anything with it.  The RAM will sadly be motionless and unusable.
8Gb is the Max and 4Gb is the standard.
To speed up the computer a good idea would be possible an SSD or a partition for cache.
I hope this helps,
Alex

  • Qosmio G50-12K - BIOS update for 8GB RAM support?

    Hi
I just upgraded my Qosmio G50-12k to 8GB RAM and installed Windows 7 64bit ultimate. The Windows see 8GB RAM but can only use 4GB. I have BIOS version 2.0.0 I wanted to upgrade to version 2.10 "P0060v210.exe"
When I run the BIOS update i get this massage [Error] BIOS Update is not supported OS. Unsepported OS or service pack installed.
I am really clueless on what to do. Can Qosmio G50-12k BIOS be updated to support 8GB RAM?
    please help !
    thanks allot eliot

    Hi eliotah,
In my opinion BIOS update is worth a try!
But I dont understand why you cant make this update. Have you installed Toshiba Value Added Package? In my opinion its necessary to start the BIOS update.

    I'm taking: 15" rMBP 2,6GHz 500GB memory an hopefully 16GB ram

People seem to forget about memory swapping. I was in a similar dilemma..not knowing if I should get 16 GB ram or 8 GB would be sufficient.. for me, it wasn't simply a question of spending additional 200 bucks.. I had a great deal on a 512 GB 2.6 Ghz quad core i7 with 8 GB of RAM..along with apple care.. for 2200.. If I was to go for a 16 GB.. then it would have cost me a lot more than the 2200 that I had spent.. So i decided to test how much the 8 GB can handle.. and this is what I did.
    Used parallels desktop 7.x
    Ran Autocad 2010 thru parallels.
Had chrome open on both mac os x and windows 7 . the windows one is obviously open thru parallels.
Had 8 - 10 Tabs open on each of the chrome.. (9 on mac side and about 8 or 10 on windows side)...
Had iphoto on the mac end fired up that connects to an iphoto library stored on my NAS.. the library itself is about 40 Gigs...
I was pushing more than 8 gig of RAM usage.. BUT.. mac os x alloted quite a big chunk to swap memory (or virtual memory).. and ALWAYS seem to leave me at least 100 MB or free RAM..
NOt even a single time was there any lag or any issues at all.. Iphoto was running 1080p videos.. I was browsing thru all the 20 tabs that were open left and right.. and in between I was hopping over to autocad thru the parallel and doing some work on it...
I swear my goal was to somehow bring the system to lag or slow down... and I was extremely surprised to see that even with just 8 GB or RAM.. I WAS SIMPLY UNABLE TO DO IT. ... Virtual memory size kept increasing.. and there were several page ins and page outs...
The main distinction here is the fact that because of Flash Memory... page ins and page outs and pretty much as rapid and speedy as RAM itself... there is no mechanical drive here.. so no spinning drives.... writing in and out is practically instantaneous.
Anyone who has 8 GB RAM, I would encourage you try to get your system to slow down  and report back if you are successful.
I simply couldn't.... and I know for a fact that I will never have 20 chrome tabs open while I have iphoto running while I have autocad etc..
I am in simply in awe with this machine.. that's all I can say.

  • Lenovo G505s A10-5750M 8GB Ram - graphics card?

I was looking at buying this laptop - http://www.johnlewis.com/lenovo-g505s-laptop-amd-a10-8gb-ram-1tb-8gb-ssd-15-6-black/p611680 - and was just wondering what graphics card it has? I emailed JL and asked and they told me the Radeon HD 8570M, but when i've been looking online etc. people have said it came with the 8560G.
Does anyone know for certain which card this comes with?
    Thanks!

  • The reason why ONLY the 17'' MBP and the 15'' 2.66 support 8GB RAM

Hi, I think I know why Apple is able to offer 8gb ram support on the revised 2.66 MBP and not on the 2.53 or 2.4 MBP.
    Take a look at this:
    15'' 2.4-2,53 NVDA Chipset
    http://s1.guide-images.ifixit.com/igi/oEmmaxSOKDDvZfZh.large
    17'' NVDA Chipset
    http://s1.guide-images.ifixit.com/igi/SSLSgODWYbiIuTLL.large
There are TWO different revisions. The first is B2 and the latter is B3.
I think that the former does not support 8GB of RAM and the latter does. That explains why the 17'' has support and now the NEWs 15'' also have, Apple gave the 15'' not only a speed bump but also the newer revision of the chipset!

It is no longer possible to navigate to the 8GB page, but the direct link is still working:
    http://store.apple.com/us/memorymodel/ME15_2_66MBP
I called the Apple Store (1-800...) and was told that the max is still 4GB. Then I read the direct URL out to the sales rep and he was surprised to see the page. He put me on hold and when he returned he said he'd spoken to a sales engineer who said that it was untested and unsupported, but that this did not mean it would not work.
I'm not actually interested in buying 8GB of RAM right now, but I would like to have some confidence that if I buy a MBP now, that I will be able to upgrade later when memory prices come down.
My guess is that Mac OS X 10.5.7 will be released soon and at that point the specs will be updated to max 8GB supported.
    Fingers crossed!

  • Lenovo X201 Series Tablet/Laptop

Hi I recently bought a Lenovo X201 Series Laptop but the screen is cracked it has a touchscreen interface I would like to know can I replace the touchscreen with a 12.1inch LED or LCD Screen as I dont want to spend to much on a touch screen details of laptop is below
    Product ID: 2985DMG
    Specs:
    Corei7 CPU,500GB Hard Drive 4GB Ram 12.1inch Touch screen.

    Hi,
there is a lot matrices are installed into x201t. Models also depend of the backlight type - LED or CCFL. I'm not sure whether any supported matrices models are compatible with your laptop. Also there are different LCD cable assembly and LCD rear cover assembly depending of the backlight type.
To ensure what matrice you have and what's compatible check out on Lenovo' site parts list of your laptop by its [laptop] serial number. Support site doesn't answer a question by MTM only.
I think it's impossible to fit non touch matrice into the tablet because of the different size (width). Compare the width of x201 and x201t.
    UPD
Service parts DB says your laptop has 12.1-in. WXGA LCD panel, LED backlight (300-nit LCD), FRU 45N6092 or 45N5388.

  • Can't Access Oracle EBS with a Lenovo X201 laptop

My Company runs Oracle E-Business Suite version 11.5.10.2. I recently had to get a new laptop (Lenovo X201). I can log onto the Oracle Application Home Page and select a responsibility, but when I select an operation, like Invoice Inquiry in the Payables Module for instance, I get the following message, "This tab has been recovered. A problem with this web page has caused Internet Explorer to close and reopen the tab." The laptop is running the XP operating system and Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702. Our IT staff can't figure out the problem. They looked at all the usual cause for problems, like pop-up blockers, etc. They also spoke to Lenovo Support without finding a resolution. We experienced a similar problem with Dell laptops that they were able to resolve. Has anyone experienced this problem with a recent-vintage Lenovo computer and found a solution?

Can you find any details about the error in Apache log files and/or Sun JRE Console Window?
If the issue is reproducible, please make sure you meet the minimum requirements as per these docs.

  • Whis is better: 8GB RAM with 2TB RAID 0 Scratch or 16GB RAM with 32GB SSD?

Having read much on performance, I am presented with deciding on which motherboard to purchase.  Given the the CPU is a constant (3.2GHz) and I am using Windows Vista Business 64bit, I am not sure which motherboard would support the most needed functionality that would be the best choice for Photoshop, especially with plugins and producing larger 16 bit Tiff files for HDI.  One board maxes at 8GB RAM but provides RAID configurations-in which I would dedicate two 1TB HD running at Striped (0).  The other configuration maxes at 16GB, but provides no abilty for RAID.  In this situation, I would dedicate a 32GB Solid State Drive or 1TB HD for the Scratch Disk.  Any ideas, or am I being too technical?
    Thanks, Jarold

Thanks for the reply.  I tend to believe that increasing more RAM would
be the first step in realizing noticeable performance improvements.  Therefore I will ensure that my motherboard provides at least 16GB of RAM for future expansion.
I will then attempt to overclock the CPU.  This is all new stuff for me, but something that I am willing to attempt.  My computer is only 7 months old, so I find it a little difficult having to replace the motherboard-which will require a new CPU.  This configuration should be good for another 6 months (possibly).
In addition, I will dedicate a drive for the Scratch disk.  Micro Center has a 32GB Solid State Drive for about $75 after rebate.  This particular drive's benchmarks test fairly high.
    Thanks again...

  • Lenovo X201 Supervisor password

Hi , ive forgot the supervisor password for my lenovo X201 , i need to reinstall windows but cannot due to the external dvd rw being in the "excluded devices" section.
I have been having a read around and so far i think my best bet is to pay for a service to remove the password on ebay.

Although its not for the x201 i had a try and the board is completely different (even though he says it will work reading the comments.
I was wondering if there was any other way of doing it other than buying one of the devices that read the chip.
    Thankyou

I recently had to reinstall windows onto the Lenovo x201 tablet laptop and I can't get the integrated webcam to work on Google+. I tried downloading the integrated camera driver but during installation it stops about 3/4s of the way and the installation cancels. Not sure how to fix this , I checked under Device Manager and the camera driver is not listed under imaging devices. Does anyone have a solution to this? Thanks.

  • Brand New Lenovo Y5070 (I7 4270HQ/8GB RAM/Geforce 960M 4GB) - All Freeze, Sound Continue!

Hello Support, Last evening I bought this high-end model of Y5070 in Chiang Mai as I spend a month here now:(I7 4270HQ/8GB RAM/Geforce 960M 4GB) I am Microsoft Windows 10 Insider Edition User and while it works fine for most I've this strange issue. I've installed today fresh Windows 10 build 10130 (latest build), some drivers were missing so I used Lenovo drivers CD to install the win 8.1 drivers (Microsoft suggest to use Win 8.1 drivers on Win 10). All works good besides, it has random freeze, everything freeze, but youtube/music keep singing and it will stay like this until i click POWER button on the laptop then after a minute it goes sleep and when it wakes up all fine again. I did installed 100% fresh win 10 setup.  If this issue is due to Win 10 I can go and install win 7 or 8.1. But it sounds not very normal to me since i dont see other win 10 users having this issue. Please assist me asap as long as I am here in Thailand/Chiang Mai and still can go to store for replacement if needed. Thank you so muchRoman

when the screen freezes and the audio is still playing i would look at the gfx card drivers
    http://www.geforce.co.uk/drivers/results/86574 Version 353.30
    http://www.geforce.co.uk/drivers/results/85123 Version 352.86
    http://www.geforce.co.uk/drivers/results/83885 Version 350.12
use driver sweeper to remove the old drivers then start with the top one and test each one and see if any improve or fix it

  • Lenovo X201 external monitor resolution issue

    Hi,
I'm having issues connecting my Lenovo X201 through the docking station -> display port -> Dell 3011.  The native resolution for the monitor is 2560x1600.  However, I currently can only set the resolution to 1920x1080 (ugly!) as any high resolution results in the monitor entering power save mode.
I'm using xrandr to set the video mode in my .xinitrc (running dwm).  This creates a good Xinerama config for dwm.
    I'm currently using the line
    xrandr --output DP1 --mode 1920x1080 --above LVDS1
to set my resolution.  When I change to --auto or --mode 2560x1600, or 1920x1200 etc I get the blank screen on the external monitor.  I'm using the xf86-video-intel-sna driver package (I tried the -uxa as well to no avail).
    Any hints?

I was able to get it by having arandr help generate the config, here's the solution that worked for me:
xrandr --output HDMI1 --off --output LVDS1 --auto --right-of DP1 --output DP1 --pos 0x0 --rotate normal --auto --output VGA1 --off

  • 13'' dual-core with 16gb ram vs 15'' quad-core 8gb ram -- ram vs cores?

    Hello.  I am at a point between choosing a 13'' dual-core i5 with 16gb ram vs the 15'' quad-core with 8gb ram - both retinas.
I will be using photoshop and illustrator while uploading/downloading large files constantly.  After much headscratching I almost decided on the 13'' i5 because from my experience, RAM limitations is where I usually run into problems, and don't see the extra price of i7 worth it when it is still a dual-core.  For the same price I can get a 15'' quad, but will be stuck with 8gb ram.
I don't care about the screen size, I have good eyes and the weigth trade-off makes this a non-issue.
I'm thinking about down the road, as either of these I'm sure will be fine solutions.  I'm just wondering where does the edge really come in this case?  Ram or processor / cores?
    Thanks.

Thanks for your reply tjk, of course with 16gb on the 15'' for $200 more  I'd have easier time, but in this case I am comparing a refurbished - the lowest 15'' 16gb I could find would cost $500 more, I just can't do it.
I should make clear that this particular comparison between 13''w/16 and 15''w/8, they are the same price (the 13 being new) - which is why I'm stuck.
To rephrase - for the same price - which will I regret less in 4 years?
As a side note, I can't believe I'm even thinking about paying this much money for something that is not upgradeable, but that's another discussion entirely.

  • Having trouble with the trackpad on my Lenovo X201

I'm trying ot get Arch set up on my new Lenovo X201 thinkpad and I've got as far as getting X up and running.  However, I'm having some problems with the trackpad.
First of all the mouse pointer is a little crazy, leaps all over the screen and is very difficult to control - any ideas on how to improve on that?  Also, I've tried following various wiki examples of how to get things working (in particular using the right side of the pad for vertical scrolling) and I'm not having much luck there...
    Any advice?

Never mind - it turns out that just installing synaptics fixed everything :-)
