Lenovo XP Mode versus Windows XP Mode?

I'm in the process of setting up a new W520 that was ordered with the "Windows XP Mode" option. The relevant menu folder has entries for both a "Lenovo XP Mode" and the expected "Windows XP Mode."
What's the difference, if any?
I hesitate to do the obvious and try them both since going through the "first boot" process is not reversable and there may (or may not) be advantages to initializing one of these over the other.
A 'net search for "Lenovo XP Mode" was a dead end.

Yep, I have read the MS and Ars articles. I too doubt, as you note, that Lenovo made a de novo XP environment but they may have, for example, customized an OEM version to include additional (or different) hooks into the system hardware or environment. Somebody must know why there are distinct entities.
I'm also another true believer in TrueImage and did capture images before the box's first boot and then after finishing initial setup, with several more on the schedule as I go through the process of getting it tweaked and peaked. So I could do an image, experiment a bit, and then turn back the clock. May have to, if the hive mind doesn't have the answer.

  • Lenovo Yoga 13 after Windows 8.1 Upgrade

After upgrading to Win 8.1, i encountered a number of problems with Audio, and Video these problems were all solved by simple driver updates but one main problem seems to persist. Whenever the screen is tilted outside of laptop mode (when in tent, presentation or tablet mode) the performance of the laptop slows down tremendously. Video and Audio playback is sluggish and the overall system runs slowly until you return it to laptop mode then everything runs smoothly. If anyone can help me with this problem it would be greatly appreciated as i just purchased this product which was not cheap, being a student and all.

  • Lenovo ThinkPad Power Manager/ Windows Power Options Issue: Display Re-awakens Immediately

I want to share my experience with setting idle timers under Lenovo Power Manager or Windows Power Options, respectively.
I noticed that every time the monitor just had dimmed or shut off according to my power savings options, it brightened up or turned on again only a few seconds later.
I had seen the same behavior before using my Dell Latitude laptop, so I came up with the solution relatively quickly this time.
The interference was caused by a Logitech wireless mouse, even though all drivers were installed correctly and the mouse was working flawlessly.
Installing the Logitech SetPoint firmware solved the problem in both cases without further steps being necessary.
Maybe this note will help other users facing the same issue. Good luck.

  • Advantage of Lenovo drivers/applications over Windows 7?

As operating systems mature there is less of a requirement for OEM drivers and applications. Many of the drivers/applications are designed for corporate customers specifically .e.g to give them a consistent interface across operating system versions and for other reasons that would not benefit an individual user. My windows 7 install works fine without any lenovo drivers.
I know some drivers/applications offer increased performance and stability, but which ones? Some are obvious e.g. Ultranav utilty allows you to programme your ultranv to a greater degree than the standard driver. But what about the fingerprint driver for example? Why should we install it? It would be valuable if we knew through the driver/application readme's exactly what advantage they gave over standard windows 7. If anyone who has installed any of the below packages can comment on what the advantage is over over windows 7, I think it would help many people. Please add others to the list if neccessary.
Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Software II for Windows 7
Conexant Audio Software for Windows 7
    Integrated camera
Intel GM45 Display Driver for Windows 7
Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver for Windows 7
Intel Wireless LAN (11bgn) for Windows 7
Lenovo Fingerprint Software for Windows 7
Lenovo System Interface Driver for Windows7
Thinkvantage Access Connections for Windows 7

For Access Connections, here's my list of user benefits over the embedded OS functions, noting that substantial work was done on all of the ThinkVantage tools for Win7 to minimize and performance or boot time hit and make them more stable.
    - More visual interface
    - Better connectivity information
    - Single interface for WiFi, ethernet, WAN, etc.
    - Auto switch for wired & wireless (fastest available network - e.g. wired and wireless can be handled in a single profile)
    - Integrated profiles for printers, browser favorites, security and more
    - Launch Programs associated with profiles (your VPN, instant messaging, etc.)
There are many IT benefits to Access Connections that are still very valid for Win7 - pretty much all the TVT's have that story

  • Lenovo G560 cannot get Windows 7 SP1 via Windows Update

My Lenovo G560 laptop running Windows 7 Home Basic is not getting the option to download Windows 7 SP1 from Windows Update. What could be the problem? Has anyone else experienced this? What is the solution? I have had the laptop for almost two years.

    hi SipoKapumba,
Do you get any error code(s) after a failed installation of Windows 7 SP1? Chances are, the prequisite to install Windows 7 SP1 are not installed.
    Can you try to:
    1. Follow this article from Microsoft and this guide in installing Windows 7 SP1 thru Windows Update
    2. If it still fails, try to run Windows 7 SP1 Standalone Installer. (use the windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe for 64bit machines)
    Hope this helps

  • DC-Jack Lenovo 3000 Mod. 0769

Can somebody tell me the function of the wires going from the DC-Jack to the mainboard? Two wires are black, two other wires are blue and one wire is red. I am mostly interested in the red one, because I made a big mistake, putting 20 V to that wire. I was thinking it's DC INPUT +  Nothing happened, but I am afraid that I made some damage to electronical parts ??? In the moment I cannot check it, because I first must replace the yellow jack. This jack is not working and that was the reason why I tried something with another power unit. The Accu is empty so I have no chance to test the Notebook. I must wait until I have a new jack. It's another problem to replace that jack. I think I must disassemble the whole notebook.
    Thanks for your help

  • G510 - Lenovo Energy Management on Windows 8.1 Pro

    Hello,
Today I installed a fresh Windows 8.1 Pro copy on my Lenovo G510 Notebook.
Everything went well and all drivers which I had downloaded from the support site installed successfully.
There was no Energy Management Software available for Windows 8.1, so I figured that Windows 8 version might work. So, I installed it but after a restart, Windows message center showed an error saying that Energy Management software was incompatible with this version of Windows.
So, what are your suggestions? I mainly use Energy Management to keep my battery at 50-60% charge because I always keep it plugged in and rarely take it outside with me on travels. When would you be releasing a software update? Or can I use Thinkpad's Windows 8.1 version of EM?
Side note: Just wanted to say/ask a few things. Didn't wanted to create a separate thread.
Is it okay to update Video drivers for Intel and/or AMD graphics directly from the website?
I saw that the AMD drivers were outdated and decided to update them from the AMD website, but after update there was an error reported in the log of Installer. I don't remember the error specifically but after the update, in device manager it would show AMD Radeon HD 8000M Series, instead of my specific model i.e 8570M.
So I rolled back. Also there used to be an easy access to Dolby Equilizer in the taskbar but the new drivers do not have that feature and I have to go in control panel to find the equilizer (I feel the sound quality has deterioated).
Please update the drivers, as there are a number of updated even after I installed all the latest drivers that are provided on the support site. Example, Realtek Card Reader (Windows reported different models than which were available on the official Realtek website but I installed anyway, they don't seem to misbehave), Conexant Audio driver of size 180MB, from Windows Update ( After this update, I cannot switch between Voice Recording and VOIP, VOIP is greyed out), Intel Video Driver update from Windows Update, which I didnot install because I play games on my laptop, and I fear this will ruin the Switchable graphics options, and AMD drivers from officlal AMD website for the same reasons that I did not install Intel's.
I am sorry for the long post. But any help and feedback will be greatly appriciated.

I have installed Lenovo Energy Management 8.0.2.4 for Windows 8 (G510), in compatibility mode on my G510 running Windows 8.1 Pro.
For now it is not giving a compatibility error.
I did a little searching and found out that G510s is very similar to G510 model, except the touchscreen and Nvidia Graphics. My G510 has AMD Radeon. I found Lenovo Energy Management 1.0.0.31 for Windows 8.1 (G510s). Going to install that.
Also, the Drivers CD which came with the box had Energy Management v1.0.0.24 and 32bit & 64bit were in different setups. I think this will be more compatible.
I need experts advice. Please reply.
EDIT: This works! v1.0.0.31 has that similar interface to the EM software that came in the CD. So far no compatibility errors as well.

  • Lenovo Power Manager in Windows 8

    Hi guys,
Since Lenovo Power Manager is not available for Windows 8 (no matter my laptop is specified to be FOR Windows 8... grrrrr...) I've been playing around because I needed not the infamous power gauge taking space in my taskbar, but some advanced settings.
Well, I found a couple of things:
Power Manager (g6u432ww.exe) can be installed in Windows 8 and can be used. Even the power gauge.
To install it, you have to run the setup in Windows 7 compatibility mode.
It doesn't work very well: sometimes it crashes or the UI won't open (at doesn't open anymore, no matter what you do). But it does run the first time (use it before restarting) and you can change battery settings and some other stuff anyway.
Do create a Restore Point before, because is not created automatically and because you won't be able to uninstall it later, since the setup expects Windows 7.
If you install Lenovo Settings Dependency Package (gfsd02ww.exe) after that, Power Manager gets upgraded from version 6.36 to 7.11. But still crashes.
Settings regarding battery charging are kept, no matter you restore Windows using system restore. So you can create a Restore Point, install Power Manager, change battery settings, and then restore Windows.
Is not a solution (I'm still expecting for Lenovo to fix this support for Windows 8). But at least I was able to stop the battery from charging all the time.
This has been tested on a ThinkPad Edge S430.
    One important question left is:
Why Lenovo Power Manager 7.11 can't be downloaded and installed normally? I couldn't care less for the Metro Store Apps and bulky gadgets. But I want to be able to change some settings.
    Cheers.
If I helped you, please give me some kudos! ^^

There's a stickied thread at the top of this board which explains / discusses ThinkPad software for Windows 8, hopefully the information you are looking for is there.
