Lenovo y40-80 Temperature

Hey everyone, I bought a new y40-80 laptop about a month ago. So far I'm pretty happy with it, but I do have a few questions regarding concerns about overheating. I've been doing some gaming with it (namely Skyrim) and noticed that the fan gets very loud whenever running on the AMD Radeon GPU. The keyboard and chassis also get very hot after about an hour (on the left side, where I presume the GPU is). The fan is also loud in general, even when opening things like Skype and Chrome for the first time, though it will usually quiet down if I'm only doing light web-browsing. I used CPUID'S HW Monitor to check out some of the internal temperatures in the machine. With just a few programs open (basically idle), the CPU averages at about 39 C. While running Skyrim, I noticed it peaks up to 70 C, maybe even higher, though it's never exceeded 75 C as far as I can tell. I can't seem to get the HW Monitor to get a read on my GPU. In fact, every program I've tried so far doesn't seem to support reading the temp on the GPU - it'll either not show up at all, or it'll give me 511 C, which I know is impossible. I downloaded the GPU driver straight from the Radeon website, and I'm fairly confident it's up-to-date, so I'm not sure what I can do to be able to get an accurate read on the GPU temp.  Is any of this cause for concern, or is the y40-80 made to endure these temperatures? Thanks.

Could you please post a screenshot of the GPU-z showing your the wrong temperature.

If you are still worried about your CPU temps (there is no reason really), you can do the following to stop the temp rising too much.
1) Go to Control Panel > Power Options
2) Click on Change Plan settings for the current active plan.
3) Click on Change Advanced Power settings.
4) Under 'Processor Power management > Maximum Processor State', set the 'Plugged In' value to 99%
This will stop the CPU turbo boost, should not affect gaming and give lower temps (ONLY in games where turbo boost kicks in and raises the temps to dangerous levels).
I did the above process yesterday and my max CPU temp reached 70 celsius, down from about 79 max.

  • Concerns when attempting to Downgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 7 with Lenovo Y40-70

    Hello
I have just purchased a Lenovo Y40-70 laptop with preinstalled Windows 8.1 OS.  I am trying to figure out how to downgrade to Windows 7 with a purchased OEM disk because of the lack of support of Windows 8.1 with many of the software packages I use for work.
After doing some research, the concept of GPT vs MBR hard drive disks kept coming up.  Until receiently, I was under the impression that to downgrade to Windows 7, I would have to convert my HDD from GPT to MBR by deleting everything that was on it and reformatting it.  This concept scares me because of the possible loss of my Windows 8.1 OS.  It should be said that this laptop is completely new and no personal data or programs have been added.
Recently, I came across a support document written by Lenovo that describes how to downgrade to Windows 7 for many of the ThinkPad computer models.  The problem is that my laptop is not a ThinkPad but was associated with the referred document(http://support.lenovo.com/en/documents/ht075596) with the use of their search wizard.
    The steps are as follows:
How to install Microsoft Windows 7 on the Windows 8-based computer:
1.Turn on the computer to start Windows 8.
2.Hold down the Windows logo key and press C to open the Charm bar on the screen.
3.Select Settings, then Power from the menu.
4.Select Reboot to restart the computer.
5.While the "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter" message is displayed at the lower-left area or lower-center of the screen, press the F1 key. The ThinkPad Setup menu will be displayed. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
6.Select Restart, then make sure the operating system Optimized Defaults option is set to Disabled.
7.Press the F9 key to load default configuration.
    8.Select Yes.
9.Insert the Windows 7 Installation DVD into the DVD drive, then press the F10 key to save configuration and exit.
    10.Select Yes.
11.Follow the instructions on the screen to restart the computer.
12.Follow the instructions of Windows 7 installation DVD to install Windows 7.
    My questions are:
    1. Is there any harm that can come to my PC by trying the above steps and it not working correctly?
    2. Is there any validity to the above instructions for a Lenovo Y40-70?
    3. Am I still going to have to reformat my HDD from GPT to MBR for any of this to work? If so, what do I need to delete in "Disk Management" to reformat?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you

This is probably not what you want to hear.
The answer to question one is a qualified no. If by Damage you mean physical damage, then the answer is no. If you mean by damage to the installed OS, then if it is done improperly then yes.
Question 2 I have no clue I have never tried to do what you are wanting to do.
Question 3. I think you need to read this, http://www.howtogeek.com/193669/whats-the-difference-between-gpt-and-mbr-when-partitioning-a-drive/
But I have another option for you. Have you ever thought of using a Virtual PC on the Windows 8 machine. You can run Windows 7 on Windows 8.1 and leave windows 8.1 intact. You can also install al your software on Windows 7 and run it in the virtual environment.
Also Windows 8.1 has compatibility mode just as older versions of Windows did. Have you tried installing the software in compatibility mode?

  • Lenovo Y40-80 Question

I was looking for a new laptop (details in my other post, I had my eye on the lenovo Y40-80 because it seems to have good specs for a good cost but I don't know what to do because some reviews say it's great (and I personally love the faux carbon fiber look) but other reviews say it's an absolute dissapointment due to graphics issues and other things.  If you own one an opinion would be helpful, also I would like to know the average battery life, apparently iy's really good.

We don't carry this unit in our selection  so unfortunately cannot provide too much detail on this. I'd suggest checking Lenovo's site or forums directly

  • Lenovo Y40, false 100% charge.

My Lenovo Y40-70 registers 100% charge left on the battery, but it will randomly shut off and/or go to 0% charge.
It is under warranty, but I would like to be able to fix this myself. What is the issue? Is it simply a defective battery. (The Lenovo I have is 9 months old)

    hi Patton370,
    Welcome to the Forums.
Can you download and run BatteryInfoView to get a rough info and status about the battery.
       - Sample image
If you see a wide gap between the Full Charged Capactity and the Designed Capacity then it's likely that one of the battery cells is wearing down (it maybe due to heat, daily use, and age). In this scenario, the battery cell(s) lose the charge capacity faster than others cells.
In addition, take a note of thee battery features:
    Voltage tap
Most consumer equipment treats a stack of cells as a single battery, but this can be dangerous in lithium ion. As the cells age, some will lose capacity faster than others -- and if one cell becomes flat before the others, it can actually start to charge in reverse, which is a highly dangerous condition. The internal circuitry of the battery pack thus has to monitor cells separately and shut down the whole pack if one cell is too far out of balance.
    Battery charge state monitor
Many lithium ion packs have a built-in meter consisting of a row of LEDs and a button. To accurately report the state of charge, the pack electronics has to keep a record of the current in and out of the cell, as well as a model of its behaviour. This can become more inaccurate over time; more modern cells will recalibrate themselves.
The false 100% charge that you're getting is possibly due to the inaccurate reading of the battery charge state monitor and the sudden shutdown that you're experiencing may have triggered been triggered by the Voltage Tap (it likely detected an abnormal activity in one of the cells that's wearing out and shuts off the battery). In this case, resetting the battery guage or doing one discharge cycle won't fix the problem and a replacement battery is necessary.

  • Lenovo G550 GPU temperature sensor

    Hi everyone,
I have lenovo G550 laptop and there is a problem with GPU (NVIDIA GeForce G210M) temperature sensor. So, when i turn on laptop the sensor is showing 'bout 70°C and when i run some programs like Chrome, paint etc. the temperature jumps over 95 °C. But the problem is that laptop is COLD , temperature is OK.  The air from fan is COLD, not warm.
I have opened it and cleaned it from dust, it's clean like in pharmacy store.  When temperature reach 100°C the laptop turns off automatically but it is still cold :/.
. I updated BIOS and it's even worse :/  sensor on start show 90°C and then raising :/. I also tried serval diferent versions of NVIDIA drivers.
So,  maybe it's hardware problem with sensor, and i'm wondering is there anyway to deal with it? Or how can i set the the max value of temperature where laptop shut down automaticallly (there is no such option in BIOS) ?
    Thank you.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I solved it,
the problem was in thermal paste and some protective  nylon over GPU. The nylon was detached on some parts  and I removed it at all. Then noticed that there is a litle bit of thermal paste on one of the components on GPU. I cleared it, and temperature is 50°C. The thermal paste probably covered temperature sensor and cause a false reading of sensor.
    Thany you for reading

  • Lenovo y40-70: Multiple issues with GPU :-( advice with at least one will be great help

Hi As you can see below, I am running battlefield 3. The AMD switchable graphics setting for battlefield 3 is set to High performance. So it the game should be running on AMD GPU. But As I have indicated the AMD GPU readings don’t show any value, so it not rendering game. Moreover, in the task bar it show Intel GPU is turned on. Game setting are set to Maximum. Also, the game run little (playable) slow. 1. Does this mean AMD GPU is dead chip? My ultimate intention is to disable the Intel GPU, preferably through BIOS.2. How to do this? Then use AMD GPU for Chrome. I want more performance with Chrome, battery n power is not an issue. But in catalyst application list, I cannot change the setting to high performance, it’s locked. 3.how can I over-ride this setting and run chrome with AMD GPU hardware acceleration  -Bluemoon

    Hi guys!
    in addition
This may not be possible "My ultimate intention is to disable the Intel GPU" Since the unit is limited to Auto-switch between the GPUs or IGP only.
The main concern Im seeing here is that it is not doing the auto switch.
    Here's what you can try:
Open Device Manager and Uninstall the Intel GPU, right click > Uninstall make sure to place a check under delete driver software for this device. Restart if prompt.
After the restart, Open Device manager again and verify if the Intel GPU turned into Standard VGA, If not perform another Uninstall to it.
Perform the same with the AMD Graphics. This is to ensure that both GPU is on its most basic driver before we install a new one.
Install the Intel Driver first https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/4eiv01ww.exe
         Restart if prompt.
         Install the AMD last https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/4eam01ww.exe
         Restart if prompt.
Now try the Auto switching with your tools.
Let me know if this works for you.

  • Lenovo y40 Windows 10 problem

    Hey guys,
So i updated to windows 10 and I started to have the same internal power error blue screen problem that everyone had. I tried to fix it but I couldnt however, now I dont even get the blue screen error anymore, my mouse just freezes within 3 seconds of me logging on and I cant move it at all. I know its probably a amd graphics card error but since I cant use my mouse at all I dont have time to go to device manager to uninstall amd drivers as many have suggested. So I do a safe boot and can use my mouse then but everytime I uninstall the amd driver it doesnt show up in unrecognized devices but just comes back under display adapters when I refresh. Can someone please help me with this problem ans let me know how to fix it please? Thanks.

    Good day.
The G500 is not currently included in the system compatibility list: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht103535
You should keep an eye on that list as it is being updated fairly regularly.
If / when drivers become available, you should be able to find them in your system's support pages:
    http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-g-series-laptops/lenovo-g500-notebook
    Hope this helps a bit.

  • HDD problems with Lenovo Y40

My pc while starting up "forgot" the booting path for windows. It only showed LAN ipv4 and ipv6 booting options and did not show the harddisk...
I panicked that my harddisk might've failed and went to system recovery, luckily it was working. I restored my computer to factory settings and logged in... The next day same thing happened.
So today I was restoring it again, and while I was setting up my PC. This alert popped up.
My question is from the lenovo people , what should I do next? My laptop is still in warranty but its not currently in US.
@Ashwin_Lenovo you helped me out the last time any ideas ?

    hi MustafaHashmi,
In addition to what Jasoonnmp have mentioned, that hard disk popup error does look legit but to verify if the HDD is indeed failing, you may need to consider running one of the following tools:
      - Lenovo Storage Quick Test (64-bit) or
      - HD Tune
        - http://www.hdtune.com/faq_1.html
If you're not able to get the unit serviced as of the moment, open a command prompt as administrator and type chkdsk /r to fix errors on the disk.
Although most of the time the drive can still be use by running chkdsk and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors (this will also mark these bad sectors as unsuable to the system), sooner or later, you may need to replace the drive as bad sectors may multiply over time so it'll be best if you contact lenovo and report the issue ASAP (if the system wss purchased in the US but you're in another country right now, you can use Skype to call the Toll Free hotline).

  • Y40-70 fans not working

I sent my computer in for a repair because of a faulty wifi card. A few days ago, I got it back, but now the fans aren't working at all. The temperature is constantly at around 70°C. I've already tried updating the bios, and even doing a factory reset, but the problem still persists. I have to use an external laptop cooler for it to be usable. I'm so tired of dealing with the problems with this laptop at this point.

    Hi MustafaHashmi,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with touchpad not working in your Lenovo Y40-70 laptop.
Please try connecting external mouse and check for the issue. Also try to check in safe mode and check for the issue
Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!

  • Y40-70 AMD R9 m275 stuck low MHz problem report

    My laptop y40-70 has 8G RAM, i7-4510u, R9 m275x 2G, 256G SSD. I have both win8.1 and win10 installed right now. have 3 problem to report.
Problem 1: after receive 15.200.1046.2 driver on my Lenovo Y40-70 windows 10 10240build , I got infinite blue screen on every boot up with message"internal power error".
I already try reinstall windows 10, I try install video card driver from official Lenovo support for Y40, the driver vision is 15.200.1050, no blue screen at all and it would makes the windows updata auto skip the new 15.200.1046.2 updata. I also try reinstall windows10 and just let windows updata download and install all drivers, the blue screen comes out again after it install the new 15.200.1046.2 driver.
    Plz fix this.
Problem 2: this problem exited for long times ago, the AMD R9 M275 on Lenovo Y40-70 randomly drop/stuck low frequency around 300-400Mhz within some 3D games, mostly in GTA5 , by random, I mean, random. Like in GTA5, GPU-Z shown that it sometimesdrop and stuck to 300 Mhz at only 68℃, which is like just start the game 3 mins, and the game drop to 14fps; But sometimes even start the game for 1 hour, and the GPU gets 85℃, it reminds 925Mhz, the game would stay above 30fps.
This problem not only happened to me, but also a lot of Chinese Y40 user, if you go 百度贴吧and go Y40贴吧, you could find many people have the same problem.
and in Lenovo NA forum:Y40 r9 m275 stuck at 300 mhz - Lenovo Community people have the same issure but Lenovo does not give a sht.
please dont tell me to plug in charger set high performance those kind of stuff, I already did, and I install all drivers from official Lenovo Y40 driver support site and AMD driver site.
Problem 3: with Official 15.7 driver installed (15.200.1046.0) from AMD driver site ,
In windows 10 10240, GTA5 laggy as hell when scene change fast such as driving, but when you slowly or evern just stand, the fps would remind steady with no lag.
In windows 8.1, GTA5 no lag at all with the same in game setting as in windows 10, besides the GPU random drop low Mhz problem, tha game runs smooth.
please fix these annoying problems. SRRY for my bad English.

    Stephen,
You report is a Kernel Panic report. It appears your computer is crashing when OS X "sees"
    com.avatron.AVExFramebuffer 1.7
    com.avatron.AVExVideo 1.7
I would recommend either updating the apps that use those files or following the developers instructions or uninstalling them. It also appears you have upgraded the RAM on your computer. Kernel Panics can frequently be RAM related and iMacs are sensitive to RAM. The causes can be:
    Incorrect RAM
    Failed RAM
    Unseated RAM
You can tell fairly easily if the KP is caused by RAM by removing the upgraded RAM and running with the original Apple RAM. If the KP's disappear you know it's a RAM issue, then it's a simple matter of determining which of the three RAM problems it is.

  • Y40-80 SynapticsTouchpad Control Panel Missing Features

When I purchased my Lenovo Y40-80, I was very happy to know that it had a Synaptics Clickpad. I have had great experiences with their trackpads in the past, as their many customization options allow me to make it work just the way I like it. After first using the laptop, however, I was dissapointed to find that the Synaptics Control Panel is a much more minimalistic version than the one I have used in the past, and options such as "Momentum" and the various corner button options are not available. (I know how to enable certain things, such as "Momentum" through the registry, but settings forthe various gestures are beyond my knowledge, and it would be much easier to have a more capable settings menu.)
Is there any way to get the more traditional Synaptics Control Panel application?
    Thanks,John

    Hello,
Could you please be more accurate on your spec: >>Posting Guide<<  RAM, frequencies, timings and so on.
Would be worth trying bit more powerful PSU. Not saying this one is insufficient, but it's always best to rule something out for 100% sure.
Remove OC from the CPU and RAM (RAM to be 1333MHz and CPU to run stock). Or try >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
Make sure that you're running latest BIOS for the motherboard <Contact ASUS about it>
Temps are completely fine for SLI on air. Top card always is much hotter than the other. However you could reapply thermal paste on both cards, run single card for 1h and record its temps, then do the same for the 2nd card (in single card mode so the other is out of the PC) and use the cooler one on top.
I feel so dumb right now. Seems like one power cord from the psu to my gpu wasn't properly attached and now that it's completely connected everything seems to work. I'll update this thread if that didn't fix the problem. But anyways thanks for your fast response

  • Tutorial: Virtual Numpad on laptops that don't have one built-in

Hi all! After getting so much good help from the people on Arch forums, I thought it was time to give back.
You remember how on older laptops, you would hit numLock and a portion of your keyboard would become a numpad? (specifically, the 789uiojklm keys) Well, recently I got a new Lenovo Y40 and I never knew how much I loved having a numpad until I found that my new laptop didn't have one. Unfortunately, the Y40 does not come with this feature out of the box, but luckily, Arch Linux is on our side. I am going to tell you how I set up my own virtual numpad using tools that come built-in with X.
Before we start, I should point out that everything I learned in order to do this was found here:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/X_ … _Modifiers
    From the warnings section:
It is possible (and, in fact, easy) to end up disabling some keys on your keyboard for the current X session while working with XKB. This includes modifiers, cursor arrows and Enter key, as well as C-A-Backspace and C-A-Fx combinations. Make sure you have some way to terminate the session without using your keyboard.
While it is rare, changing XKB configuration can sometimes hang or crash X server. Make sure you can handle it. Having some way to killall X or reboot the host remotely may be a good idea.
Stop xxkb, or any other layout switching applications. xxkb actively changes XKB state. Debugging both at the same time is not a good idea.
And finally, be warned: it is very easy to get used to custom layout.
If you want to learn more, that wiki article is the best available xkbcomp documentation for people who aren't X developers (lit. me). And with that, let's get started!
Getting Set Up + xkb Background Info
The first thing we will do is run the command
    xkbcomp $DISPLAY outfile.xkb
This will spit out the code that represents the current keyboard layout. Our end goal will be to code in what we need into this file, and upload it back to the X server. I recommend editing this file in an editor with C/C++-style syntax highlighting, since it might prevent you from making syntactical errors.
There are many sections to the .xkb file, but we will only concern ourselves with xkb_types, xkb_compatibility, and xkb_symbols.
xkb_types lets you define types for each of the keys on your keyboard. For example, if you use Canadian Multilingual Standard (like I do) most of your keys are given the type "EIGHT_LEVEL_SEMIALPHABETIC". When a "special key" like ctrl, alt, caps lock, etc is pressed, in xkb_types, we map these modifiers to "LevelN", and different combinations will mean different things for different types. For 8-level-semialphabetic, no special keys pressed is "Level1", Shift is "Level2", etc.
If we jump forward to xkb_symbols, and look at the keys, we see that each key is assigned a type, and an array. The first element in the array is what symbol the key represents for Level1, the second is the symbol for Level2, etc.
Finally, xkb_compatibility allows us to set which keys turn on which modifiers (as well as other things).
So with that, let's get started
    Editing the layout
We will begin by editing the xkb_types section. First, we will pick an unused type from xkb_types (you could create your own, but it will be more work). It doesn't matter which type you picked, so long as none of your keys use it. Take down the name. Now delete the unused type, and in its place, copy paste the type that your keys used already. Finally, change the name of the copy to the type you deleted. For example, I deleted EIGHT_LEVEL_ALPHABETIC, copied and pasted EIGHT_LEVEL_SEMIALPHABETIC, and changed the name on the copy back to EIGHT_LEVEL_ALPHABETIC. Next, change the modifiers variable to accept NumLock. This is done by concatenating '+NumLock' before the semicolon. Lastly, we will bind it to a level. You can create a level, or simply pick one that you were not using, and add the line (where N is the desired Level)
    map[NumLock]= LevelN;
Next, we will turn our attention to xkb_compatibility. Simply copy paste this code into the xkb_compatibility section, taking care to replace Scroll_Lock with the key you wish to use to toggle the numpad:
    interpret Scroll_Lock {
    virtualModifier= NumLock;
    action= LockMods(modifiers=NumLock);
Now comes the more tedious part of editing the layout. For every key that is part of your virtual numpad, change the type to the copy we made earlier. (In my example, I would change EIGHT_LEVEL_SEMIALPHABETIC to EIGHT_LEVEL_ALPHABETIC). Finally, locate the Nth element in the array (indexing from 1) where N is the level you bound the NumLock modifier to in xkb_types. Replace this with the desired nunmpad key. For your convenience, here is a list of the numpad keys I used:
    KP_0
    KP_1
    KP_2
    KP_9
    KP_Add
    KP_Subtract
    KP_Divide
    KP_Multiply
    KP_Decimal
For example, here is the entry for my 'u' key (note the KP_4):
    key <AD07> {
    type= "EIGHT_LEVEL_ALPHABETIC",
    symbols[Group1]= [ u, U, NoSymbol, NoSymbol, downarrow, uparrow, NoSymbol, KP_4 ]
If you are wondering what to do if you want to bind numpad keys to your Fx keys, I added a note at the end of the post.
Uploading the layout to the X Server
And now the moment of truth. First, run
    xkbcomp myNewLayout.xkb
This will NOT upload to the X Server yet; it will only compile the file and check its syntax. One cryptic error I got was because I used C-style /*block quotes*/. xkbcomp doesn't like these, but it doesn't mind //this kind of comment. If we have no errors, we can now upload with
    xkbcomp myNewLayout.xkb $DISPLAY
Well, go ahead and try it out, there will almost surely be some really neat tweaks you can do.
    Extra Stuff/Notes
When you hit Scroll_Lock (or whichever key it was you chose) it locks the new type we made to LevelN. This is why we went to the trouble of making a new type, so that the rest of the keyboard would not be locked in LevelN mode. For example, on my setup, I first tried this without creating a new type, and found that the rest of my keyboard was not behaving normally, since it was also bound to Level8 (my desired numpad level). So, I created a new type for my numpad keys so that the rest of the keyboard would still act in its usual manner even when I had the numpad on.
If you're wondering, I bound KP_Multiply and KP_Divide to my F8 and F9 keys. However, I didn't need to change the type, since the level I chose (Level4) also caused the Fx keys to act normally (except if I rebound them). That is, before I changed anything, all the Fx had the corresponding Fx key bound to Level4. I simply changed the Level4 keybinds for F8 and F9. This meant that when I activated the virtual numpad, F8 and F9 were KP_multiply and KP_Divide, and the rest of the function keys were what they were usually.
Hopefully, this tutorial won't only help you to make a virtual numpad, but maybe help some other newbies like me to further customize their system. And the Arch Wiki author is right, you really do get used to the new layout and it becomes frustrating to use other computers!
    Happy trails.

OK since your security is set to WPA why do you want to go to WEP? DS? If everything is configured correctly you should not have to change anything. If you are connecting another device and forgot what your WPA setting were just go into the router and take a look see.
    1. I set up everything, its all fine and ok
    2. The DS can't connect to WPA, only WEP or Open
    3. I know what my WPA settings are and the codes to both settings

  • Solution - Battery error is detected. Irreparable damage to the battery has been detected. Replace

I own a T61 7658 I bough on 2008, it worked great with the default power settings until October 22nd I decided to change my power profile to MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE.
Next day I received on Message Center...
10/23/2010 - Battery health is critical. With the current system settings and a full charge, your battery can provide approximately 3.0 hours of use. A new battery could provide up to an estimated 5.5 hours.
I kept using the Laptop with the Max performance until...
11/12/2010 - Battery error is detected. Irreparable damage to the battery has been detected. Replace the battery with a new one.
I have used IBM/Lenovo  for years and even had used batteries for 5 years without a single issue.
I have read many posts of people having the same problem not only with T61s, but many other Lenovo models, and also read posts of Lenovo's administrators suggesting this is normal and justifying that batteries should be good for at least 12 months and after that we are on own, basically meaning we should be thankful in name of our own safety that we had that battery protection and we must replace it at our own cost and forget about it.  That is a very easy way out, isn’t it.
But certainly, not only batteries with more than 12 months are failing, even new batteries are and have been replaced with multiple exchange programs posted by Lenovo in their website just as in http://download.lenovo.com/lenovo/content/batt/082009/LandingPage.html. and also in multiple MIGR battery replacement campaigns available to all online as well.
Good thing here is that Lenovo has recognized the problem and has exchange the batteries still under warranty and also few of the batteries without warranty limiting to some serial numbers on the MIGR battery replacement campaigns, but the bad side is that Lenovo is leaving behind other clients like me and many others not being selected for replacement.  But I’m sure we all have a good battery but turned useless due to the Lenovo programmed safety temperature limits in the power manager and the battery board.  Please let me explain.
This is my conclusion.  There is nothing wrong with used or new batteries or their cells in 99% of the cases, I'm sure my battery is okay although is being turned useless by the battery protection feature on my T61.
Lenovo must recognize the problem is the settings they have programmed on the power manager and battery protection board. It is very understandable that when users select a Power Scheme that demands higher amounts of power to generate better performance on the system this also demand additional power generating heat on battery and on the power supply as the computer is running at full performance, just as happens on my ipod when watching video, or in my kid’s R/C truck when running continuously and will happen with any other battery powered device.
Therefore any scheme requiring performance is generating heat and is tripping the battery protection and this is not a client’s fault, as are we just using an available scheme provided on our Lenovo system. If the battery protection is not calibrated to support this power demand, then there is a poor design/testing of the capabilities of the system and the battery protection parameters that instruct the battery to save itself from a fire or burning … which is understandable.
The bad side is that there is not possible reset option for the end users, the only option is to buy a new battery at our own cost after the 12 months of warranty, when the cause of the problem is originated in the computer system design settings and can happen at any time, that is way, the system warned me, as in:
10/23/2010 - Battery health is critical. With the current system settings and a full charge, your battery can provide approximately 3.0 hours of use. A new battery could provide up to an estimated 5.5 hours.
The computer is saying! At maximum performance, You are using too much power, and my battery will last just 3 hrs (9 cells on my system) instead of the 5.5 hrs that should last. But not only the running time was reduced, the heat on the power supply system and Battery was also increased due to the higher power demand, the battery can not handle the demand and protect itself to prevent fire or damage.
So who has to pay for this?  Can Lenovo do something about it? For us client and for future clients?  This not a matter of having or not having warranty, this can happen at any time in any computer.
I'm writing this hoping to be heard and supported and I hope LENOVO provides a satisfactory solution to the issue.  I'm not going to say will never buy Lenovo again I already did, I invested my money on Lenovo and with warranty or not I'm looking forward to get a decent response.
Lenovo must change the parameters for tripping battery protection probably handled at BIOS level, and to provide a reset feature to all "locked" batteries there is many people that has lost at least one battery, some other more than that.  Since even if we get a replacement, the chances  the issue will continue is there, as long as I select a high power demand scheme the problem sooner or later will be back.   Even car makers support their clients beyond the warranty if they detect that the issue compromises safety and their reputation.  Fix it.
