LENOVO Y500 - BATTERY GAUGE RESET - NOT CHARGING

I am using Lenovo Y500 for last two years. There was not a single problem. I tested "battery gauge reset" option under Energy Management tool in the last night. I discovered in the morning , i could not turn on the laptop! Finally i turn on the laptop with the help of this forum.
1. Turn off laptop
2. Remove battery
3. Charger connect
4. Turn on laptop
5. Connect battery
No problem. Charger connect and battery is charging. But when i remove the charger , laptop can not detect the charger again !!! If i want to charge it, i must repeat from the process 1.
What can i do? (No warranty)

hi durlove716,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
This laptop still support the old DC jack connector
I would suggest have another AC adapter,Regardless of the brand as long as it is for a laptop, and try plugging it in and  see if it wil get detected. Or I Most recommend bringing the laptop to a Repair shop and have another AC adapter tested to it.

  • Lenovo P580 battery "plugged in, not charging" problem?

Hi, I have a Lenovo P580 that is almost 3 years old, and I recently bought a new battery from Amazon to replace the original battery that came with the laptop. However, after installing the new battery, I can't get it to charge with the AC adapter plugged in. The new battery had a 60% charge initially. I currently have the battery setting in "battery fully-charged mode." The battery indicator light is red and flashes quickly, regardless of whether the AC adapter is plugged in or not (and despite having 60% charge). In the bottom right-hand corner of the desktop taskbar, the battery is recognized as being "plugged in, not charging." Is there a way to get the battery to charge? Or should I return the battery and get a different one? I really don't think the battery is the problem, but who knows. Thanks.

    hi MlodyDziura,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Can you Verify that when the Computer is Plugged in and Turned on the battery icon on the lower right states that it is Plugged in not Charging.
And how many Percent it says on the status.
    Thanks

  • Battery gauge reset

Will using the battery gauge reset function in Thinkvantage power manager reduce charge capacity?
My battery has been acting funny (only lasts half an hour under normal use like web surfing) although it's only a few months old and I heard this function can fix the problem. However, I also read some complaints about it reducing the charge capacity? My battery is 4 cell Li-ion.
BTW what is the original charge capacity in Wh for T61 4 cell Li-ion battery (FRU 42T5225)?

    Hello zachareth,
I would not recommend to use battery gauge feature, because mostly the capacity will decrease.
I would suggest to drain your battery always till 10% then load it and drain it to 10%.
Battery gauge reset will do nothing more.
    Your 4 Cell should have about 26mAh, a 6 cell about 56mAh.
I would recommend to buy a new 6 or 9 cell if you want to have enough power for hours.
To get most out of your battery install Lenovo powermanager driver and powermanger utility.
Then set powermanger utillity to "max battery saving", using Wlan, bright display light and a bright background picture, will decrease run time.
    Edit:typos.

  • Battery gauge reset destroyed my battery

    Help... Help!!!
I have used my T60 for over one year so I thought it would be time to "recycle" my battery.  Then I notice the "Battery Gauge Reset" under Battery Maintaince so I tried it see if it would keep my battery in good condition.
My battery was fully charge to 56.16Wh which is the original full charging spec.  Thus after one year, my battery is still showing this same fully charge capacity.
Then I went ahead and perform the battery gauge reset.  After about 5-6 hours of doing this process, after it was done, my battery full charge capacity dropped to 40.43 Wh.  I was not sure of what to make of this result since I don't know if this reading is accurate, or is my battery has been degraded.
So one day later, I ran this battery gauge reset again.  Again, after 5 hours of performing this process, my battery full charge capacity now dropped to 29.20 Wh, i.e. almost half of my original fully charge level.
I was very mad and want to be sure if it is this battery gauge reset function that destroyed my battery or it is really my battery, so then I perform this reset function one more time.  Again, after 5 hours of this reset process, when done, my battery full charge capacity is now dropped to 19.09 Wh.
Can anyone from Lenovo tell me whether the reset has destroyed my battery or my battery is still good, but the reading is misleading?  I thank you in advance for any information.
    LvL.

It is my understanding that Lithium Ion batteries should not ahve the reset process done to them Only the Nickel Cadium batteries. "however you spell it".

Battery life (capacity) decreases with age and usage of batteryCapacity is the length of time you can run your system on a fully charged battery. It is normal for all batteries to lose some capacity over time. Each time you discharge and recharge your battery, you will lose a very small amount of this capacity.
Some of the capacity may be recovered through using a more aggressive power management scheme. You may also want to check for specific information on your system; for example, some BIOS updates include power management enhancements. Other systems have specific tools to help with battery life. To find drivers and files for your system, go to ThinkPad software and device drive file matrix and select the link for your system.
Conditioning Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries may improve their capacity, but will not help Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries. To condition NiMH batteries completely discharge them (also called a deep discharge) and recharge them every few months. Do not do this to Li-Ion batteries because it will actually damage them

  • Can I turn notebook off while it's performing a battery gauge reset?

After starting the gauge reset process from Lenovo's power manager utility, can I power down my notebook or must I leave it on until the process completes?

    Hi noxxle,
You need to leave your notebook powered on during a battery gauge reset.

  • Battery status showing "not charging" when power adapter is plugged in

I just bought a brand new Magsafe adapter 60w for my macbook but it seems that when i plugged in to my macbook, the battery status showed "not charging".  I have to disconnect and plug in again.  This also happened when I used my previous power adapter, that is why I got a new one.  Is this a common problem?  Please advise what could be done.

    Hi
Try resetting the SMC. This sometimes solves this type of problem, in fact, it's listed as one of the reasons why you should try this:

  • Battery icon says (Not Charging)...help?

My battery icon says (not charging) and it won't charge. The battery is dead but the AC adaptor seems to work just fine. As soon as I unplug it results in the computer going off though. Any help?

Hi and welcome to the Apple Discussions.
First, make sure that you have the most updated firmware and battery update for your macbook. You can also try resetting the SMC of your computer. Here are the steps:

  • I run  hard hardware test on my macbook white an found error like this 4SNS/1/40000001:VPOR-0.578 and i replace my new battery but it not charging, help me!!

i run  hard hardware test on my macbook white an found error like this 4SNS/1/40000001:VPOR-0.578 and i replace my new battery but it not charging, help me!!

Bring it in for service.  Anytime hardware test detects an error, that's an indication the service department needs to fix it.

  • Despite resetting the SMC, the battery still does not charge. Any quick fix here?

My MacBook Air is unable to charge the battery. Have tried resetting the SMC by pressing shift-ctrl-alt and the power at the same time and release them all at the same time. Hereafter I have pressed power on. Still it will not charge beyond 1%. Have tried an alternative power cord and adaptor for another MacBook Air from the same household, but no change here. Any quick fix ideas? My MacBook Air runs OS X Version 10.9.4. 1.4 GHz Intel Core iS, 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3.

Sorry but it is in Danish language. Any good?

  • HT3964 Installed a new battery for a Macbook 2,1 New battery not charging. Battery symbol shows (Not charging) and replace battery. Green LED on magsafe connection. Disconnection results in an instant shutdown.

I have just installed a new Battery after the old one showed (Not Charging) and when you clicked on this icon the dropdown"condition replace now". Problem now is the computer still shows the same message in the top bar (Not Charging) and the dropdown also shows "condition relace now". the magsafe show the greem LED i.e not charging, but providing power. If you disconnect the magsafe the computer powers off instantly confirming we have power. I have carried out resetting the SMC controller and still no change. Tested the standby voltage on the magsafe pins etc, all in spec. What should I do now, as I don't want to keep spending more and more. Bellow is the info from the system profiler.

  • Red battery showing but not charging and button not working

My daughters iphone 3G is showing a red battery when plugged in but not charging, it always shows 20%.  Also the button isn't working, so I can't reboot.  I have plugged it into the PC and it doesn't recognise the device?? what is going on with this?

same problem here, on the Black MacBook, purchased in April 2008.
0% icon and the green lid.
I tried restarting, reseting etc ... without any success.

  • HP Zbook15 not charging battery; AC adapter works, Battery works bu not charging

Window 7 OS. Zbook battery wont charge. I checked it via HP battery health check and it show OK, Discharging, capacity 91%. Battery health check could came back that AC adapter not present, however it was plugged in and power the the computer. The AC adpter works and powers computer. But when battery is installed the plugged in icon does not show. The plgged in icon only shows when battery is removed. This is NOT a failed battery or failed AC Adapter problem. Both check out completely by exchange with another same model laptop. How can I get my computer to recharge the battery?

  • Battery Meter Red, Not Charging when plugged

Last night i was using my phone to browse and surf the net. the battery was running out finally it gave me a graphic that i need to plug it in. The graphic was a plug + the electricity symbol. So i plugged it in and the plug and the electricity turned into just the electricity symbol. so i went to bed and when i woke this morning, the phone was on the same screen. It had the battery meter in red, the electricity symbol on the but no charge. So i checked the plug on the wall, and it works. So i decided to plug it in to the computer and still the same. No charge going through.....
I restarted it while still plugged and nothing.
so finally i restarted it, unplugged the cord....then replugged it and it finally started getting charge...
Has this happened to anyone? Or is there some kind of safe gaurd that i dont know about and just making a full of myself on here?

Ok I think I have an answer. This happened to me twice and both times, it resolved the same way.
CAUSE: Both times, this happened when I let the battery run down too much. I was playing a game or listening to music and ignored the low battery warnings thinking I could push it and eventually the iphone shut down. No problem, I thought. I can just plug it in and keep on going. But when I plug it in, the iphone won't charge ... like it normally does. I get the red battery meter and the plug and lightning symbol as previously described. The phone won't turn on. I tried resetting it several time - hard resets as well - with no response. Always to the screen with the red battery.
SOLUTION: What i did both time was to keep the phone plugged in for at least 4 hours and maybe even more. I noticed that the red battery symbol flashes when it is not plugged in but when it is plugged in - the red battery symbol does not flash. Even though the phone is non-responsive in every other way, it seems to recognize if it is plugged into a power source or not. So I kept it plugged in for several hours. By the way, the phone is totally unusable during this time.
After that time period - I did a hard reset and the phone booted up with the white apple symbol and I started recharging again - this time it took.
I did this TWICE so I think it will work in the future.
THEORY: I am not a computer person (I'm a gynecologist in real life) but I will try to explain this behavior as best as possible. I think when the battery runs down too low it shuts down. But it shuts down EVERYTHING! Even the software that charges up the battery - which is a bug that Apple needs to fix - but everything shuts down. So this may sound stupid but it seems that when it is shut down to this degree the phone does not know how to charge itself. That is why nothing works. The phone remains shut down. It does not reboot. It does not charge up. However, as noted above, the phone does seem to recognize when it is plugged in to a power source or not as indicated by the flashes on the red battery symbol. It flashes if it is not plugged in and it stops flashing when it is plugged.
Anyways, even though the phone does not know how to charge up, it is charging anyways - but only by a trickle. A microscopic trickle. And it takes a couple of hours via this trickle to charge up the phone to a certain level to be able to reboot. After the reboot - you have to charge up the battery again - but since the phone is now working, it knows how to charge itself up normally.
Again, this is an amateur theory but I can't explain this behavior any other way.

  • The battery icon says "Not Charging" and the light on the charger isn't lighting up either?

I fell while my macbook was in my bag. It was already dead but when I went to put the charger in it wouldn't light up. To my surprise it still turned on but it said "(Not Charging)". I unplugged it multiple times and reset the PRAM and everything and it's still the same. It's as if I always need my macbook to be plugged in for it to work and not charge at all. Is it the internal battery? What else could I possibly do to resolve the issue?
