Lenovo Yoga - My first experience with a notebook - my last with Lenovo

Short story about myself:
I am a designer (print/web) and a coder (Web).
I started my studying and thought it was time to get a Notebook as the iPad would not cut the productivity needed anymore. I was mostly working at the office or at home. But studying and the big breaks would make it impossible to get along both of those places so I needed a way to work while I was on the go.
So I decided to buy a Notebook. It was down to a few models but the Lenovo Yoga 13" caught me.
My i5 version had some great specs. Starting at 8GB ram going down to the IPS screen at HD resolution all was fine.
I picked it up in February just before my birthday as a little present and motivation for myself.
Trouble began right after I received it. The Space key was not responsive on the bottom left corner and the keyboard was wobbly. I was kind of disappointed as I have always read that Lenovo does great Keyboards, the Yoga does not seem to have one. I know that the keyboard won't be as great as the mechanical Keyboard I have lying around here, but that bad ?
The keyboard is what I would imagine a keyboard would feel like printed on a pad of silicone.
Fan Noise, unbearable. Working in a quiet environment is impossible. I don't want to hear any noise from a device that is using an SSD. Other manufacturers are able to shut down noise, why is Lenovo not able to ? After working several nights with the Yoga and then switching one night over to my iPad I realized how terriblly disturbing that noise was. So I did a quick search came along the forums and saw a big thread which has even grown bigger. You see customers basically begging for an Update on the Fan Noise issue. The thread has 90 pages most of them people trying to figure a way out. Some even plug out their fans and yet the Yoga runs stable.
So , we could question how much effort went into that poorly designed patch for the Yoga.  It does not seem like a lot , despite the fact it took so long. I know how to Manage Information System Projects but I don't understand the time involved. Either there are problems you don't want to admit to your customer (bad documentation, no ressources, design flaw ... ) or you simply lack the ability to understand what your customer wants.
After I got sick of the issues which bothered me day by day I went into the store and registered a complaint. They sent it in.
I had the following issues:
Space Key not responsive
Top of the keyboard and right edge loose
Fan loud and always running
High Frequent Noise
Ability to turn on the device while lid is closed AND fans running at the same time
It came back:
Module changed, Bios Update, Test run
I took the device and inspected it in the store with a salesman. We both noticed a bump at the wasd keys thus we knew something went wrong and opened up the keyboard at the edge just to find out the official repair service used some double sided tape above the RAM slot. Space key was responsive now but the Keyboard had a big wave rising up at the left and lowering down at the right side. The fans were still running, I still had a high frequent noise and the ability to turn on the device while the lid was closed was still possible.
So in the next hour without exiting the store I filled in another complaint. Waited another two weeks and got the message that I should be paying for the next repair. Incredible strategy. Do the repair bad and let the customer pay.  But that is not how you should deal with your customers. After speaking with the service guy , who seems to have spoken with Lenovo's service partner they took over the cost.
So now my Yoga was back.
The whole keyboard was exchanged as it seems (it looked pretty new so I assume it was changed) - The repair information just said "module changed"
After just about an hour of using the keyboard was lose again.
Guess what I went back to the store and now it was the time to request my money. Of course I had to wait for another 2 weeks.
It was a total downtime of 2 months and worst service I have ever seen. Especially that double sided tape was hilarious and unprofessional and made up for some good laughs.
And today I got my money back thanks to the law system we have here in Germany , which saves customers like me from faulty products.
In the time I did not have my Yoga I tried out several in stores and found the same errors over and over again and mostly with the keyboard. So it seems like a design flaw to me. A very bad one.
Colors were scrapping of the edges even on mine to which was handled with a lot of care and carried with a very nice incase sleeve which has some very soft fur inside.
Fan Noise on all of them. Some were even worse than mine.
I am a very disappointed customer and  I don't think I will come back again to Lenovo and a lot of my friends won't get any recommandation at least not for the "casual" series. This should go straight to your quality assurance department.
You should know that you only have one chance to do it right. And if you do it wrong at least care a bit. If you don't your customers will simply move on such as me.
I hope that everyone who enjoys his Yoga continues to do so and everyone who has complaints to put up their voice so you can be heard and people who are responsible for the flaws start correcting them.
I am happy to be out of that beg for something but don't receive anything circle.

how do a get a refund on a ridiculously slow downloading rented movie for my apple tv dispite a >5mb/sec down load speed? my first experience with appletv movie rental. no good. rented at 4:30pm. still waiting for standard def movie to finish at 8:10pm. Not good enough.

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

  • This my first experience with itunes and using a gift carddownloaded an album and only half of a few songs played before jumping to the next song

This is my first experience with itunes and I chose to download a Mark Knopfler album. The first three songs stopped half way and instantly started the next song. How do I re-load the songs since i now "own" them? Thanks. Luce.

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the dodgy tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.

  • First experiences with LR 5.0: manual file selection and  Adjustment Brush

I must admit that I have not fiddled too long with LR 5.0. The reason is quite simple: its extreme slowness, even in comparison with 4.4, which is far from being fast. After slightly retouching some 40 images I fell back to 4.4 and finished testing 5.5 for a while. Anyway, in addition to the speed problem I have collected some - also not too promising - experiences:
After initially retouching the first image I wanted to copy some of its settings into the rest of the photos. Before clicking on the Sync button I had to select all the target files. Probably because of the relatively small number of images, instead of going to the "Edit / Select All" function I used "Shift+Right Arrow" for the selection. LR simply crashed...
In several cases I was not able to re-open and modify formerly 'adjustment-brushed' areas. When I moved the cursor above the relevant white 'knob-shaped' mark, nothing happened. The cursor did not even change to hand form, so the "Effect" panel remained dark and the formerly set parameters did not come up. As I kept the cursor there for ages and the image was not 'over-adjusted' (as also indicated by the small size of the associated XMP file), this failure was surely not a result of the above-referred slowness.
Once I selected an already retouched image, with the Adjustment Brush tool open. The existing adjustment mark came up over a formerly brushed area. Then, without doing anything with the open image, I moved to the next picture. To my surprise, the Adjustment Brush marks of both photos appeared on the last opened image - the one, which belonged to the previous picture and another, associated with the second picture. It goes without saying that I was not able to click on any of the Adjustment Brush marks. Closing and re-opening the Adjustment Brush tool did not help, so I had to restart LR.

  • My first Mac and first experience with iPhoto.  Need help

Hello everyone. I just purchased my first Mac, a Mini, last week and I'm trying to learn how iPhoto works. I've been able to import picturs from my NAS (network attached storage) drive which holds all our photos, music and videos.
However, when I took pictures over the weekend, I wanted to put them on the NAS as well and have them automatically import into iPhoto. I like that iPhoto lets you put a description about the pictures, but I can't find a way to type a description and then set iPhoto to save the pictures to my NAS drive.
I ended up just saving them to the NAS drive and then importing again and telling iPhoto to not import duplicates. The problem with that is I get folders called thumbnails and then I get messages telling me the Thumbs.db files are not readable and those are coming from my camera card or the NAS drive, maybe because it was formatted on a PC. I know Thumbs is a PC item.
With my old PC, it allowed me to pick where I wanted my photos stored and what name I would like to call the pictures and then it named them all in succession automatically. Will iPhoto do this and if so, how do I do that? And how do I enter descriptions about my old photos to make them easier to find during a search?
Thanks for the help. While the Mac is very similar to my old PC, there sure are a lot of things I'm unfamiliar with. But with time and some help from experts like you, I'm sure I'll get comfortable with it.
    John

    John
iPhoto is a photo organiser - that is a database. Like any database the data has to be imported into the application.
What format is that NAS? iPhoto does not sit happily on disks that are not formatted for Mac OS X (journalled). You will find issues with saving changes to the db and with sharing pics among other apps.
You can put a library on an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
With my old PC, it allowed me to pick where I wanted my photos stored and what name I would like to call the pictures and then it named them all in succession automatically. Will iPhoto do t
No. For a start, filenames have no relevance in iPhoto - it's all about visual organisation. You can attach titles, keywords and comments to pics, of course, and can add them to the File on export.
If you want to set the pics in a spot, then do that with the Finder and thereafter import them. You can use a batch file renamer such as FileList to rename the files prior to import.
and telling iPhoto to not import duplicates.
Using a Referenced rather than a Managed library means that iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. It will create an alias to the Original file, a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
As a general comment: iPhoto is a bit different from most photo apps. It's happiest when it manages the files and lets you go on to manage your Photos. That's a key distinction though, between Files and Pictures. iPhoto is about Pictures, not Files.
You do all your work in the iPhoto Window - there is never a need to go into the Photo Library on the Hard Disk. To find and access photos:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    To use an external editor
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
By all means post again if you need more info.
    Regards
    TD

  • First experience with sound problems in Arch

Hi everyone. Just did a fresh install and pacman -Syu so everything should be up to date. Installed alsa-utils and made sure Master and PCM were unmuted. My goal here is to create a headless PC that interfaces with my radio, in order to use digital modes like RTTY and PSK.
EDIT: Forgot to mention here the nature of the problem -- no sound at all. However, the program fldigi seems to be able to get input from the Line In.
pavucontrol shows the meter moving when sound is being generated. Here's the output from lsmod | grep snd:
    snd_via82xx            17875  4
    snd_via82xx_modem       7514  0
    snd_ac97_codec         89368  2 snd_via82xx,snd_via82xx_modem
    snd_wavefront          28274  0
    ac97_bus                 874  1 snd_ac97_codec

    snd_hwdep               4778  2 snd_wavefront,snd_opl3_lib
    snd_mpu401_uart         4783  3 snd_via82xx,snd_wavefront,snd_cs4236
    snd_rawmidi            14796  2 snd_wavefront,snd_mpu401_uart
    snd_pcm                65796  5 snd_via82xx,snd_ac97_codec,snd_wss_lib,snd_via82xx_modem,snd_cs4236
    snd_timer              15006  3 snd_wss_lib,snd_pcm,snd_opl3_lib
    snd_seq_device          4252  2 snd_rawmidi,snd_opl3_lib
    snd                    44583  21 snd_via82xx,snd_ac97_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_timer,snd_wss_lib,snd_pcm,snd_rawmidi,snd_wavefront,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_via82xx_modem,snd_seq_device,snd_cs4236,snd_opl3_lib
    gameport                6202  2 snd_via82xx,ns558
    soundcore               4354  1 snd
It seems excessive to me but I don't remember this motherboard too well. This is all built-in sound. I installed Pulseaudio as this seems to be the preferred method in fldigi, the program I'm using.
    I feel like I'm forgetting a few outputs, here's aplay -l:
    card 0: V8237 [VIA 8237], device 0: VIA 8237 [VIA 8237]
      Subdevices: 4/4
      Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
      Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
      Subdevice #2: subdevice #2
      Subdevice #3: subdevice #3
    card 0: V8237 [VIA 8237], device 1: VIA 8237 [VIA 8237]
      Subdevices: 1/1
      Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
I'm happy to provide more information. Every other arch install I've done has worked flawlessly, first time I've ever encountered audio problems.
I'm going to re-read the ALSA, OSS and Pulseaudio wiki entries, even though I feel like I'm still not grasping something.
A sincere thank-you for everyone's help here. I can get the alsa-info.sh script as well, if that will help.
    EDIT: Here's the alsa-info output: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=6930c … 86954423ed

What have you used to try to push sound through?
    Have you tried:
    aplay -L
    null
Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture)
    default:CARD=VT82xx
    HDA VIA VT82xx, ALC662 rev1 Analog
    Default Audio Device
    sysdefault:CARD=VT82xx
    HDA VIA VT82xx, ALC662 rev1 Analog
    Default Audio Device
    front:CARD=VT82xx,DEV=0
    HDA VIA VT82xx, ALC662 rev1 Analog
    Front speakers
    Then:
    speaker-test -Dplug:default -c2 -l1
Try changing 'default' to one of playback devices output by aplay -L
Have you tried any 'model=' options for the module?

  • First Experience

Just wanted to share my first experience with my new Mac Mini Server so others may avoid some frustration.
Last night, I turned on my brand new Mac Mini Server. I already had an Apple Wireless Keyboard and Might Mouse and plugged in my usual LDC monitor using the HDMI-DVI converter. The first screen I see shows me that I need to turn on my mouse. Great so I do. I then proceed through the first couple screens of Setup Assistant until I have to enter the Mac OS X Server serial key. I then realize it never paired with my wireless keyboard and since I only have old PS2 keyboards and no USB keyboards, I'm presently hosed. So I turn the machine off and reboot a few times to find that Setup Assistant now disconnects the mouse when displaying the big "X" splash animation. Great, I can't even get back to where I was before. So I read the manual and proceed with a remote setup using my MacBook Pro. I install the Server Admin tools and it finds my MacMini. I click to select it and click the Set Up button. Nothing ever happened: Setup Assistant never opened. Great.
After a while I remember an old KVM switch which just happened to have PS2 inputs and USB outputs so I'm back in business. I finally get through Setup Assisant and now logged in to the administrator account. While running Software Update, it downloads both an Apple Wireless Keyboard firmware update and a Server Admin tools update. Well that probably explains my initial problems. Even after the update, it took several attempts to re-pair the keyboard. I never tried running remote Setup Assistant after that.
So lessons learned: a.) Make sure your wireless keyboard has the latest firmware updates before turning on your Mac Mini Server for the first time; b.) after installing Server Admin tools from the packaged DVD, check for and install updates before using them for remote setup.

As you do have a running XP maybe you start with a plain Sun Ray Server (5.2.3) to get started and to get familiar with the system (in fact, we are just using physical Win7 and lot of WTS as backend) ...
1.) Install Virtual Box (we are are running on ESX)
    2.) Install Solaris x64
    3.) Install Sun Ray Server
4.) Install Oracle Virtual Desktop Client on your Laptop
4.) Create a kiosk to your XP laptop like e.g
    -bash-3.00# utkiosk -e pc7145
    KIOSK_SESSION=uttsc
    KIOSK_SESSION_TIMEOUT_DETACHED=12000
    KIOSK_SESSION_ARGS=-l de-DE -E wallpaper -E theming -r scard:on xpXXXX (hostname of your XP PC)
    KIOSK_ENABLED=yes
as default kiosk ... (called uttsc in Sun Ray, i.e an RDP Connection to your PC)
5.) start OVDC and connect to your sun ray server, it will show up with with the login screen of your PC.
    more info is here http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/server-storage/sunrayproducts/docs/index.html
I'm running such an environment for about 200 Sun Rays (HW), OVDC (SW) and in the future iPad Clients (iOS) in production, the only difference to your idea is that we are using ESX as Hypervirosr for the Sun Ray Server and not Virtual Box.

  • Horrible customer support experience with Nokia

I have just had an extremely frustrating and unsatisfactory experience with Nokia's support / repair operation. Unless I can resolve this, I will put my 820 on Ebay and forget all about Nokia and Windows Phone 8.
I initially called Nokia because my 820 would very occasionally freeze when I tried to unlock it to answer an incoming call. The CSR told me to send it in for repair but refused to answer the question "what happens if you cannot duplicate this intermittent issue?".  After asking the question many times, being put on hold and then being told over and over again that Nokia's technicians are "very skilled and can repair it" I was put on with a "supervisor" who told me that Nokia has seen this before and can repair it. She said it was a settings issue but would not tell me WHAT settings.
Even though I was pretty sure this was a software issue (and had called primarily to make Nokia aware of it) I sent it in for repair since it is still under warranty.
After it had been in Nokia's hands for a week, I called to see what was happening. The CSR told me over and over that "it was in our facility for repair". After pressing him many times and being put on hold for a supervisor (at my request) he finally told me (I never reached a supervisor) that Nokia was "deciding whether to repair it or replace it" and that it would be returned shortly.
An equally frustrating and lengthy call the next day revealed after MUCH pressing that Nokia had repaired a "mechanical issue" and would be sending it back.
Just now I got an Email with a tracking number and a copy of the repair paperwork. The paperwork states that it was updated (GDR2 I assume) and tested and found to be working. No mention whatsoever of any repair efforts.
In other words, I was lied to TWICE. Once when I was told that the freezing was a known issue and could be repaired. And then again when I was told that a mechanical issue had been repaired.
Is this truly the kind of customer experience Nokia is comfortable with? Really? This was my first experience with Nokia and with Windows Phone and I am here to say without a shadow of a doubt that it will be my LAST unless Nokia can show me that this was an anomaly.
I am writing this here because I don't see any other way into Nokia other than the "support" phone number...... and that didn't work out very well.

guys, please just persist with your local Nokia Care outlet and have your phones repaired to your satisfaction, there is no point taking out your frustration here as it does not get anyone anywhere.
Where do I find a "local Nokia Care outlet"?  The only entry to Nokia support I find is the phone number on their web site.  If you read my original post, you will see why I found calling that number that a less than stellar experience..... many times.  I / we take our frustration out here because there is NO other place to do it.... Nokia is very well insulated from its customers.  Maybe I should open a Facebook account?
Since writing my original post, the phone has arrived and I find I was lied to yet again.... although that "lie" kinda cancels out an earlier one.  Contrary to the paperwork which states that the ONLY thing they did to the phone was test it, I find that upon close examination they actually seem to have replaced the screen.  I can tell because there were a couple near microscopic nicks in the screen that are now absent.
As for whether that actually resolved my original issue, I cannot tell yet.  That may take some time since I am in essence trying to prove a negative.
The repair paperwork includes the statement "Passed, software update".  Not sure what that means.... the phone as it came back to me was NOT updated to GDR2 / Amber although those updates were available prior to their receiving the phone.  The phone came back to me with the same firmware that was in it when I shipped it and I had to do the GDR2 update myself.
Yes, I needed to vent.  Yes, I feel (a little) better.  But based on my experience this time around, I will go buy an iPhone before I EVER deal with Nokia "support" again.  And I am DEFINITELY not an Apple fan, so take that as an indication of my level of frustration.  I actually LIKE the 820 and the concept of Windows Phone.

  • Considering Lenovo For First Time, Others Experience with K410 and K330B

Hi everyone I am shopping for a new desktop. My 7 year old Dell Dimension 4700 died and am now shopping. I am looking to spend around $300 which I know is a pretty basic machine but for my needs(web surfing, quicken, word processing, low graphic games, burning dvds, listening to cds) that should be fine.
I like the flexibility that my Dell had with both DVD burner  and CD rom drives and have wanted to have a second hard  drive on whatever I end up with so I can separate the OS from the data.
From my researching it seems that my best options are either a refurb Ideacenre K410 or K330B which I've seen on the Lenovo outlet website listed for $281 and $287 respectively ) I don't hink Dell is what it used to be and the Hp's at this price seem to be very basic in terms of the MB used.
Otherwise I'm considering building my own as I have a brand new 400w ps, a barely used ATA drive(which I know would need an adapter),a still functioning SATA HD,a functional DVD burner and CDROM.Would need to buy mb,cpu, case, fan and basic sound card. But with a copy of windows 7 it is easily at least at $300 so it makes wonder if one of the above Lenovos is a better option.
I have read different things about Lenovo support and reliability so I'm not sure what to think.
So my questions are what are others experiences with these 2 desktops and also how reliable has your Lenovo been. Also others experience with refurbs would be helpful.
Sorry this is so long but I could really use help.
    Thanks

Re the data partition you mention, Lenovo tried that with the ideaPad with somewhat mixed results on their first effort.  Perhaps an improved version will be available in the future.

  • Yoga 2 Pro - Broken in less than a year - A terrible experience with IdeaPads

    Hi guys!
I'm hear to tell everyone about my pretty terrible experience with Lenovo and my Yoga 2 Pro IdeaPad. It's not a review or anything but more of a forewarning to those who are thinking of buying from Lenovo.
I'm also here to help others out in my situation, that is, if you are stuck with a half broken (or in my case, completely faulty) laptop and Lenovo won't help you out (fixes are in italics).
    The beginning
So I bought a Yoga 2 Pro at BestBuy in the USA about a year ago. I live in Australia so I asked about international warranty and they said that the notebook is covered by international warranty.
The day the screen flashed black and white
About a few months in the screen began flashing black and white rapidly (it goes from black to white about twice a second) for about 30 seconds to a minute. I found that you can stop this from happening if you open and close the lid a couple of times. Not really a big issue unless you set your laptop to go to sleep/shutdown when you close the lid. I don't so everything was fine.
The day the Wi-Fi NIC stopped working properly
So then a couple of months after that my Wi-Fi began to play up. I recently found out that you can prevent this from happening by ensure that you don't put any pressure on the sides of the base of the laptop (Eg. don't put your elbow on the side of the laptop and hold your head up with the same elbow).
I also worked out a while ago that you can get the Wi-Fi to work again if you go Right click Wireless Icon->Network And Sharing Center->Change Adapter Settings->Right Click Wi-Fi->Disable it->Renable it
    Here comes the bad stuff...
    Screws began to fall out
So then the screws began to fall out. I screwed a couple back in when they were wobbly but they eventually fell out without me realising. This suggests that the screw holdings have poor quality threading and as a result the screws begin to fall out. I now have 5 out of 11 screws on the backplate of notebook.
    And also the screw holdings.
Yup, the actually thing that the screw screws into fell out as well. About three of them fell out. I don't know how it could possibly do so but it did, it happened when I picked up my laptop from the desk.
And then the charger socket broke
I can no longer charge my laptop -> I now have a very expensive beverage coaster
So then the charger socket cracked in half too! Again, not really sure how it happened but it did, it might possibly be from the heat of the laptop causing the plastic to expand when heated and retract when cooled. I have the i7 CPU version so it may get hotter than normal.
The laptop no longer charges so I no longer have a laptop to use (I use my desktop to work (and occasionally my phone)).
Not to worry! I'll just make use of my international warranty...?
And then the customer service were not helpful:
And then they said I didn't have international warranty...
And then they admitted that I did...
And then they claimed international warranty does not apply in Australia...
So I emailed Lenovo customer service and they kept claiming that my notebook did not have international warranty.
I talked to Jessica, Jason, Jai, Jasmin, Jackie (why are there so many J's?) and Adam.
Eventually one of them admitted that I do have international warranty but it is not supported in Australia. How convenient for them.
The notebook has never been dropped
I am the only user of the notebook
The notebook is kept in a padded laptop bag.
I was very polite to customer service.
All I'm left with is a very expensive notebook that doesn't actually work.
As a result I can only strongly recommend that you avoid buying from Lenovo. I worry for those who have bought Yoga 3 Pro, with it's watch band design and all.
Here are some pictures I took a few weeks ago (I photoshopped the stickers out):
This is what the charger socket looks like now (Hard to take a good picture, sorry!) Note that it ha...

  • My first experience(review) with ICS

    Hello everyone,
Hopefully i got my share of ICS update on my Xperia Mini Pro although my SI number was not listed on the blog/thread. It is working smoothly and i have spent around 5 hours checking all of its new features.. I am writing my experiences with it. Others are welcome to add their experiences.
The New Face Unlock feature is awesome although i experience some difficulties with it. Sometimes when i try to unlock my phone, the face unlock screen appears black(for about 2/3 sec) then the Pattern unlock screen(for 2/3 secs) and then the Face Unlock screen appears. Don't know whether this is happening only to me or not.
I am unhappy with the new screenshot feature. The previous screenshot feature(of GB) is more user friendly with this one. You need to press the Power button and the Volume down key to take a screenshot, which i think is not good.
The notification light of the new ICS is buggy. Sometimes the led for sms will blink and other times, it will not. Also, the notification for Facebook is also not working as in GB.
The Album art of my songs will not appear on the Android Music Player(this was not the case in GB), some do appear.
It takes 5/6 secs for the Contact page to appear.
Love the new Gallery(not Xperia Gallery), although some features like Share,Crop etc are missing.
The video player is not good as it is used to be.. Earlier, in GB a particular video shows correctly but in ICS the video would show smaller...
The new Status Switch is good, i like the battery meter..
The confirm dialog while deleting sms is different. Earlier the Yes box appears on the left side and No on the right, but now it is different. It will take quite a few days to get to this new change.
I like the new FONT SIZE feature under Settings> Display.
    Hoping to add more ...

Thank you for the nice description TIP: should write here:

  • Yoga 2 Pro - WiDi with ScreenBeam Pro not working

I have spent hours on this problem like several others in the 9 page message thread that also deals with this topic. I am starting a new thread because the other one has not been updated for some time and it is quite large with tangent topics.
First, I have two brand new Yoga 2 Pro's with Windows 8.1 (had them for two weeks) and I recently purchased the Actiontec ScreenBeam Pro and started working with it last night.
Second, *both* of the Yoga 2 Pro's are behaving in exactly the same way, and I'll describe that in a moment. Both systems are also update with the latest drivers. I have taken the time to compare all installed versions with the latest available from either Lenovo or Intel. All of the latest Windows updates have been applied. I am religious about keeping my systems patched. I'm not trying to impress anyone, but I've been an IT engineer for 31 years and build and over-clock all of my desktop systems; I know my way around.
Third, the firewall was disabled during one interation just to demonstrate that it was not the problem.
Now, here are the installation steps and the resulting problem:
The ScreenBeam is properly connected to an HDTV and is displaying it's initial screen
Swiping into Charms and making my way down to  PC and devices -> Devices -> Add a device, results in the Screen Beam being discovered as a television, a PIN being displayed on the TV screen, and that PIN is then entered at the prompt from the "add device" dialog. The ScreenBeam also displays the fact that it was able to succesfully pair with the wireless adapter and displays a screen on the TV stating that it is waiting for a connection. I then access the Project menu through Charms->Devices->Project, but there is *NOT* a selection for projecting to the TV. Eventually, the ScreenBeam times out waiting for the connection and tells you to relauch the wireless display app.  At this point, the ScreenBeam is present in the Devices and Printers window as SBWD DF9945-SBWD100A., but it is not active because there is no connection. So, therein lies the problem; I cannot project to the TV screen.
I have performed multiple iterations by  deleting the device from Devices and Printers and performing the process again in a very systematic manner to make sure I did not miss anything, and the result is the same. I have performed the steps on two different, brand new systems with the same result.  Just for grins, I went out to the Intel site and downloaded their latest WiDi Software, and it simply *wiil not* install on Windows 8.1; the installation terminates stating that the plaform is not supported, including calling out that the operating system is not supported.
From reading the other thread, I see that this same configuration has worked for multiple people.  I checked the firmware level on my ScreenBeam, and it is the latest version of 1.1.9.0, so there is nothing further to do there.
I have been all over the web looking at similar reports, and I have not found a definitive solution. Lenovo support was no help at all, and they wanted to charge me $69 to speak with a specialist, which I declined. IMO, Lenovo needs to step up the plate and offer help with this; they offer the ScreenBeam as a supported accessory in their on-line store where I bought the systems. Granted, that is not a binding agreement and does not carry the legal weight of a hardware or software product description,  but given that two brand new systems cannot use that accessory, it would seem to me that they would want to understand the problem so that they can offer a solutioh to their current and future customers.
So, I am hoping that someone from Lenovo will take an interest in this problem and contact me.
    Regards,
         Dan
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hello all, I have determined the cause of the problem and WiDi is now fully operational! It turns out that even though I had disabled the firewall in the internet security product that I used, the virtual packet filtering NIC's that it creates appear to have been causing the problem. The tip-off came along after I installed the Actiontec configuration utility from the MS App store (it's free!). I installed it because I had nothing else to test with other than adding/removing the device from within Windows. I found that the configurator app would actually connect about 1 - 2 times out of 10 attempts and I was able to access the ScreenBeam and change it's configuration. The intermittency led me to believe that it was network related yet all other network traffic was fine. I went digging further into WiDi operation and noted the virtual NIC's in Device Manager; in order to see them you must enter Windows Device Manager and set it to show hidden devices. What jumped out were the virtual packet filtering virtual NIC's created by the internet security solution. The only way that I knew of to remove them was to completely uninstall the security solution. I did that, rebooted and everything stared working. Once I rediscovered the Actiontec and entered a new PIN, the "Add a wireless display" choice was now available in the Project menu. I enabled Windows Firewall and I am using MS anti-malware tools to have some kind of protection for the system. I am going to search their KB to see if this is a known problem and report it if I find that it is not; I'll update again once I have more news. The security solution that I use is Vipre Internet Security 2014 from GFI Software. I have used it for many years on all of my systems because I have found it to be a high quality product, and this is the first time I've ever had an issue with it such as this. So, for those that have had the same problem I had with WiDi, and you are using an internet security solution that provides it's own firewall, I suggest that you first try to disable it and see what effect it has. In my case, disabling was not enough, I had to completely remove it. Dan
