  • Lenovo G505s Randomly Shutting Down

Hello! I've owned my G505s since August 2014 and it has served faithfully as my school laptop. I do not have any money for a new laptop and I've looked at endless posts and articles, so I'm at my wit's end here.
It all started last night, when my hard drive just failed to boot. It told me there was no OS installed, despite Windows 8.1 being installed. I rebooted a couple times and the same message popped up and I checked the BIOS settings. They were all correct. I assumed that my HDD became corrupted or something occurred, so I found a Windows 8 ISO from Microsoft's website and started installing tonight, since I knew the BIOS stored the key and would auto-input.
That part was successful. The part that's killing me here, though, is the constant shutdowns now. It started ever since I had to reinstall. At first I just put Windows 10 Tech Preview on it to quickly get some work done since I had the install USB with me, but it shut down randomly there too. Now, during the install of the Windows 8.1 OS, it shuts down at random times and corrupts the installation, forcing me to start over and observe the same shutdown issue all over again.
I do not have money to ship it and I'm losing my mind here. I thought Lenovo was good, but I'm seeing others with the same exact problem, and I'm several months away from having enough money for even a cheapo laptop. Can anyone help?
Keep in mind that I can't even get past a Windows 8 install and booting a Live USB of Linux is a no-go because it won't even boot, even if the Legacy option is enabled in the BIOS (seriously? no linux support?)
My BIOS is updated (3.0). Thanks for any help

    hi Chripallo,
    Welcome to the Forums.
It could just be a coincidence but It's possible that there's a hardware part that's failing inside the machine (e.g., Memory, Overheating GPU) which causes the shutdown issues.
    Things that you can try:
    1. Re-seat the RAM and HDD and try reinstalling Windows.
    2. If you have two RAM sticks (e.g., 2x4GB), remove one stick and observe if you can now install Windows.
    3. (Optional) Check this article on how to create a bootable USB diagnostics to test the RAM/HDD.
        - Sample image
    Note:
You will need to set the following options in the BIOS to boot from a  USB
    Security Tab:
    Secure Boot = Disabled
    Exit Tab:
OS Optimized Defaults = Other OS.
    Boot Tab:
    UEFI = Disabled
    Boot Mode = Legacy
If the problem remains and you're still not able to install Windows after doing the above steps then I recommend you contact lenovo for warranty service.

  • Random shut down on battery

When using battery only, My MacBook shuts down completely and without warning, at random times. I notice moving the screen back and forth can force this, so sounds like a lost connection somewhere. Any ideas?
    Details for your info:
    Machine Name: MacBook Pro 17"
    Machine Model: MacBookPro1,2
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP12.0061.B03
    SMC Version: 1.5f10

I had the same issue, and it turned out to be a bad battery causing the random shutdown, even when my battery was at 90%+ charge. The link above is not the right link to use if your battery is not within the serial #'s listed. There is a more recent posting for battery issues:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
My battery was all over the place with it's capacity readings, so I did a tracking of it using Coconut battery:
    http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/
or you can also check the capacity left (original capacity vs current capacity) by using Apple System profiler. I believe that if your current capacity (not charge) is less than 80% and you have less than 300 recharge cycles on it, then that battery is considered to be not within specs and Apple should replace it.
My MBP was 2 weeks out of warranty, but Apple covers this issue for two years.
You also need to have the latest battery update installed on your MBP in order to qualify.

  • IPhone 4s apps randomly shutting down, overheating, battery isn't holding much charge. HELP!!!

Hello, I bought an iPhone 4s in November 2013. The phone is through Sprint. (didn't know if that made a difference or not.) In the past 7 months the phones apps have been opening & shutting right down, the app might stay on for 2 minutes if you're lucky. It started out with my Facebook app shutting down, then it progressed to other apps & the repeated random shutdowns have been getting worse. The phone itself overheats without even being plugged into the charger. The Safari is now beginning to close randomly. I called my carrier & they said that they could run a diagnostics test on my phone to see what's making it do what it's doing. Since the phone has been shutting down & randomly shutting apps off for over 7 months, they've ruled out the option of it being a bad software through Apple. Has anybody else had this problem & what are your suggestions on how to fix it? I've already reset my phone just about every time it shuts down & it hasn't helped at all.

    Hi sydrenae2012,
Given your description of the issues you are experiencing, I would make sure my data is backed up, then try restoring the iPhone to factory settings and testing to see if the issues persist in the default configuration before restoring any other data. This should help narrow down the possible causes. You may find the following article helpful:
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings

  • My iPhone with 40 or so percent randomly shuts down with iOS 7 and 6. Often with the camera app stating the phone is out of battery.  Moments later I turn it back on and the same battery life still appears.

My iPhone with 40 or so percent randomly shuts down with iOS 7 and 6. Often with the camera app stating the phone is out of battery.  Moments later I turn it back on and the same battery life still appears.  It sometimes happens over and over until I leave it alone for a while (still not charging), and then it works.

I think you might get a new phone instead of repairing it as it takes time and you said the repairing center is far from your living place

  • Macbook Pro random shut down whilst using battery

My Macbook Pro randomly shuts down whilst using battery power even though their is plenty of charge in the battery.
    Any ideas??

does it do it when plugged in?
Also it sounds that there's a power failure and causing it to shutdown, I would get it serviced asap, the battery connector might be faulty.

  • RMBP randomly shuts down - now with red battery indicator at 52%

For the past few days, my mid 2012 15" rMBP has been powering down or sleeping while in the middle of performing tasks, and more importantly when it's ABOVE 15% charge. Just today however, I now have a red battery indication at 52% and holding. The other day I did a search to find out what the issue might be and I didn't find any helpful info. At the time, I had an external monitor plugged into the thunderbolt port closest to the ac adaptor port. I was running Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, but nothing else, and was not connected to the internet. I had turned wifi off. My problems continued until I plugged in. Once on a full charge, I unplugged and the same thing happened all over. Numerous times. So, I disconnected the external monitor, and thought that solved my problem. The next time I used the computer, I put the external monitor into the other TB port and did not have any issues, however I wasn't using the rMBP as extensively.
Today, again while performing tasks such as importing/exporting images with LR & PS, my laptop shut itself down. It runs warm, and fans are purring like crazy, but that's normal for the work I'm doing. Prior to the shut down, the battery read ~24%. I plugged in and woke it up. No external monitor is attached today. I am not running any other programs besides Chrome at the moment. I noticed a red battery light at 52% and it has not changed. Option clicking the indicator shows a "normal" condition.
Can anyone explain what is happening?
More information that might be helpful:

    16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
250 GB SSD (with ~25GB free)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
I have had a Speck hard shell case covering the laptop for a few weeks, but no issues until this week.
I am a pro photographer who shoots tethered on location and carries my rMBP around on assignment. It has never been dropped, or damaged in any way. I baby this thing!

  • Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro, random shut-downs running Mavericks,

Since the last two Mavericks OS updates, beginning April 21st, I am experiencing random shut-downs on a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro, any suggestions? I've seen posts regarding the known logic board issue, I had no problem before the last two OS updates. Seems to be related to sleep/wake. Running 10.9.2

Hi Andy, would you take more look at this log. . . random shut down happened again, look at 11:54 am and before, I re-booted at 12:02. Had suspected my external monitor at the office, laptop does not do this at home, ran for three straight days, no issues. No monitor connected today as a test. Plugged in at the office for just over three hours and bam. could be the battery thing, will try AHT or Apple Diagnostics, could it be a Time Machine related issue? Thanks in advance.

  • Mid 2010 15" Macbook Pro Random Shut down and Restart

I know this questions have more than likely come up a few times. But I have a mid 2010 15" Macbook pro that, for the last year, has randomly shut-down and restated displaying an error message each time. I have had this computer into three different computer repair shops over the last few months, two of which were apple certified, and have had a range of reasons provided for the issue. Anything from Motherboard to hard drive to virus. I have replaced the hard drive, did a complete reformat three times, and downgraded my OSX. But I still have the same issue. I recently came across some support tickets referring to an issue with this model of Mac, something to do with the graphics card. I downloaded a program that was supposed to be a work around, but am still having shutdown issues. I also heard that apple did a free replacement of the motherboard on these machines within 3 yeas of purchase. Obviously I am past that point, but I was hoping that there would be some other suggestions. I have ran an etrecheck on my machine and have attached it below. Can anyone provided any ideas of how I can fix this without having to buy a new motherboard?
    Thanks for the help...
    Cheers,

    Cheers,

  • 24" iMac mid 2009 random shut downs

I am really struggling with my machine, since several months it crashes/shutdown repeatedly.
It is always the same behaviour, the power just goes out, no program crashes, no spinning beach balls, no nothing, just a blank screen and of course no power. It can happen while browsing or while watching Youtube or just while creating a simple document. It really is random.
I have done everything I possibly could including:
    1. Full re-install after clearing the HDD and overwriting it several times with "0"
    2. Booting and running from an external drive with same OS
    3. Running both the small and big hardware tests without any indication of errors
    4. Running memory-tests and also replacing the old 2x2 GB with 2x4 GB of RAM
    4. Have had it plugged in directly to the wall outlet and together with other machines in a plug board
    5. Left the machine a service shop and they did the same things but could not get the machine to crash in two weeks(ARGH!)
    6. Went back to the service shop and they had the machine running for a month straight without any crash/shutdown.
None of the above has made any difference at all. I collected my machine from the shop again recently and the first random shut down appeared afte les then 24 hours, it has crashed 3 times since then.
The system log does not show anything that can give it away.
It seems like I can induce the crash by multitasking and having a lot of tabs open running flash in the browser, but I get no errors in the logs to indicate that I am right, but the crashes mostly happen when I browse (but that is also what the machine is used for 90% of the time) I use Chrome, Safari and Firefox randomly.
I have found numerous posts on different forums from people stating the exact same thing, I really like Apple but this is unbearable to say the least, there is officially nothing wrong with my machine since it happens randomly, without any error messages, but I can not use my computer since it can shut down at any given time.
    What to do?
    Thanks in advance
    Andreas

    Andreas ...
Have you tried Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    From that link:
    Power
The computer doesn't respond to the power button when pressed.
A portable Mac doesn't appear to respond properly when you close or open the lid.
The computer sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly.
The battery does not appear to be charging properly.
The MagSafe power adaptor LED doesn't appear to indicate the correct activity.

  • Macbook Pro Randomly Shuts down...SMC Reset only temporarily

I have a somewhat concerning problem with my 2011 Macbook Pro (15").
It started two nights ago, didn't happen yesterday, and happened again today.  It has also fried two iPhone chargers.  Here's the story:
On Sunday night, my Macbook randomly shut down.  Wouldn't restart, nor would it even charge (the LED on the charger didn't even come on).  So after trying everything I could (namely, PRAM, SMC, etc.), I finally took the bottom of the computer off, unplugged the battery internally, did a hard reset of the SMC, and everything was back up and running.  That night, I got a strange error when I plugged my iPhone in to charge:  USB is using too much power and has been disabled, or something along those lines.  Weird--but my computer didn't shut down again, so I shrugged it off.
Fast forward to tonight--all worked fine until I plugged a NEW iphone charger into the computer.  This same cord worked fine this afternoon, but I got the "USB drawing too much power" message and then nothing.  The computer shut off, had to unscrew the bottom and do another hard reset, and here I am.
I've tried to figure out just what might have caused this.  I did buy a charger from my university's bookstore that I do not think was Apple branded.  Is it possible that it somehow fried my battery? Or do I have a bigger issue - motherboard, RAM, etc.? The computer (when I get it to finally power back up) works fine and no files have been lost, so I don't think it's harddrive related.
If anyone can shed some light on this problem, please let me know.  I've searched for a long time to find a problem similar to mine and haven't found any answers other than the generic "Reset SMC," or "Reset PRAM."  I know how to and have done both of these things.  Do I need a new battery? I ordered a charger directly from Apple and have only used it since the first shut down.

There's only a limited amount of things you can do on a laptop repair-wise: tiny and tightly packed components are a far cry from yesteryear's huge boxes with individual removables.
Is the USB error coming in regardless of which USB slot you use? Have you reproduced this error with other USB devices that draw a charging current or significant power?
If the problem is indeed that USB is drawing too much power, it could be a short in the USB circuitry, or it could be a short with your phone. Try charging someone else's iPhone. The concept with current is that it's "pushed by voltage" and "drawn by a resistance in a closed circuit." If the voltage is too high, or if the resistance is too low (short circuit), then you will end up where you're at.
Also, it could be helpful to review your system log. In spotlight, write "terminal" then type in the shell prompt (without the quotes) "cp /var/log/system.log ~" this will put a file on your desktop that you can open with a text viewer, search for the word "USB" towards the end of the file, and see what you can make of it. Post anything here that seems suspicious. Warning: it'll be cryptic and hard to read!
    So,
    - Try different USB slots on your computer
    - Try different USB power-drawing devices
    - Try different iPhones or iPods
    - Review the system log and post any suspicious lines

  • T410 randomly shutting down

I've had plenty of issues with the T410 already. Got a key stuck error which forced support to change the main board AND keyboard.
Shortly after that the computer started randomly shutting down. Wether on power cord or battery the PC just suddenly dies. in a split second disk and fan stop spinning, screen goes black, so do all lights. Only the green light by the FPR lights up.
Now nothing makes the computer boot. Not pressing the power button or sweeping my finger (which does turn the green light off).
In order to bring the foul thing back to life I need to unplug the power cable, remove the battery and only then does it respond to pressing the power button. Main problem is that it is now off warranty, and even if it was under warranty, I'm not willing to drop the thing on the depot for 60 days like last time around.
So, here goes a long shot hoping that someone has a magic bullet to solve this.
OS: windows 7 pro, 64 bit
    type: 2516-cto

Blown capacitors on the motherboard can sometimes cause a problem like this allow they usually make the machine shut down much quicker than 4 hours..If you open the machine you will the tops of the capicitors bulging if this is the problem.

  • MacBook randomly shut down, and won't turn back on

First of all, hello. Secondly, I've got a problem with my MacBook: about half an hour ago, it randomly shut down and when I tried to turn it back on, it didn't. Instead, the backlight kept flickering at the tempo that something inside the computer was "clicking", and the longer I held the power button, the more "clicks" there were. Needless to say, I've tried charging the battery, resetting the SMC, and to no avail: I still can't power it up, even when I don't use my battery. Whether I use it or not, the MacBook still "clicks" during my pressing of the power button and stops "clicking" when I release it. My MacBook is a year old. Can someone help me out here?

Me too. Any resolution? I don't want to take it to my local apple place because they're retards, but according to the info on my warranty that's the only place available. Can't believe they don't have an RMA service direct to Cupertino, what a joke.

  • MacBook randomly shutting down

My mac will shut down without warning when Im using battery power. Sometimes it won't turn back on until I attach it to the power cord. My battery is always charged when this happens.
    Whats wrong with it?!?

    Hi there,
I have had battery and random shut down issues as well.
Got my Macbook last July and loved it until about April, then...
It started with the battery light switching from orange to green repeatedly. I tried re-calibrating the battery (which I do every couple of month as instructed in the user manual)and noticed that it would just shut down when the battery got low rather than give me a warning.
I took it in to an apple technician store in Montréal Canada to see what was up, they changed the logic board. They did nothing to the battery. They said it was a logic board problem. I brought my repaired macbook back home and everything was fine for a few days.
I started to experience random shutdowns in the following days, and the battery problem re-appeared. I brought it back in and they replaced the logic board again. They did nothing about the battery. I brought my repaired macbook home and everything was fine for a few days... And then it started random shutting down and doing all sorts of weird battery stuff again.
Is it odd that the apple store just kept replacing the logic board, eventhough it seems quite obvious that this is a battery problem?
Would calling AppleCare be wiser than going back to the technicians (I subscribed to apple care recently as I don't see an close end to the problems that I am having)?

  • Ibook randomly shutting down...

    Hello all,
I have been experiencing a problem of my computer just shutting down at random times. This problem is not in conjunction with any other problems like freeziing or anything like that. I do not think it is a loose battery because it just shut down on me a few minutes ago sitting quite still on my desk. Any thoughts or ways to fix the random shut downs?

Could the iBook be overheating? There is a freeware item (think it's available
as a widget for 10.4.x and also as an app for 10.3.9) you can get to see the
processor (bottomside sensor) and battery temperature; but not cpu temps.
I have something like that in my iBookG4, and a different something in my
    iMacG4 in 10.3.9 = "Temperature Monitor Lite."
Some checking around and I see some users had a few different issues
and of them some had logicboard problems. Have you tried the Apple
Hardware Test? It boots the computer and runs apart from the OSX.
And there also is a similar link (by name, sort of) in this forum which also
has some information that may apply to your situation. Best of luck!
PS: If you have installed additional RAM in the user accessed
slot, check to see if it is loose. Also, reset/zap the PRAM. [If the
machine is running hot, the fan should be on; if not, maybe it's
something else... But it is something, for sure.]
