Lens Blur in After Effects

    Hey everyone,

I keep getting the following error messages, most frequent to least

I am working with AI files, some have been converted to footage, some still AI - continously rasterizing. I even cleared all AI files out to see if they might have been the problem, still crashing. File works fine on PC. Have reinstalled twice. Need to stay on cs5 because I'm working on files with others.
Crashes randomly in a variety of processes such as scrubbing the time, RAM previews, composing, etc. I have tried resetting all preferences, deleting prefs manually, and some open GL things.
Would cs5.5 or 6 work? We have additional licenses for both. Could also upgrade to mountain lion?
Any other solutions or ideas would be greatly appreciated! Trying to get work done for a client and have tried running AE CS5 on OSX 10.6.8 on a macbook pro - getting the same problems, and its not the file (fine on pc).

Well, I see the letters "PDF" in the error message, and that's where I smell the rat.
Illustrator can open PDF's: just choose the page you want for multiple-page PDF's.  Then make any necessary changes, and save as an RGB Illustrator document.  Backsave to an earlier Illustrator version if you can.
You can even sort the PDF out into separate Illustrator LAYERS -- not shapes or groups -- which can be used in AE as layers.  Very handy.  Just make sure to create a new layer in Illustrator; most hard-core Illustrator users who aren't used to AE tend to overlook that nifty little feature.

  • Lens Blur not showing in After Effects CC 2014 Release

    Hi,
As I'm new to the After Effects - Video Copilot environment I can't figure this out that why, after having the plugin in the Effects folder I can't see Lens Blur in Effects>Blur and Sharpen>Lens Blur?
I'm working on the project named ParticleDesign which can be viewed here. How can I fix this problem?
I can only see Camera Lens Blur as the only blur effect close to Lens Blur...

There has not been a Lens Blur effect in After Effects for several versions. It was replaced with the Camera Lens Blur effect years ago.

  • After Effects - CC Vector Blur and  Fractal Noise Rendering Issue CS3

    Hey,
I am using After Effects for animation. I have drawn everything in Illustrator, imported into AE and added some effects like CC Vector Blur and Fractal Noise to generate water-like textures.
My problem: when I render as an image sequence (or video, or PSD), I don't get the effect. I'm assuming I don't have it properly set up for rendering and I am wondering how I can fix this.
I have precomposed water layers (which are three different layers; a blue solid overlay; and two masked layers with added effects) and added motion blur. Given this is the problematic area, I am also assuming this is where the problem is.
Any advice! Or else I'm screen shot-ing every frame.......ugghh.

  • Global Switches for Frame Blend and Motion Blur aren't working with the newest version of After Effects 2014.1.1

I have been using After Effects regularly since 1995. So this isn't an operator error.
I am on a new Mac Pro six core with OSX 10.9.5 and 32 gigs of RAM.
Is anyone else having trouble with activating frame blend and motion blur?
Occasionally I am able to get the global switch to appear to be on. It still won't activate motion blur or frame blend.

I'll answer my own issue. The global switches actually work. The distinct dark boxes that indicate when the global switches are enabled have been removed and replaced by a light blue outline of the switch icon.

  • Lens blur effect used on Heroes

Hi, I'm trying to figure out if the effect used so much on Heroes is an in camera effect or just a lens blur/mask? It's kind of a depth of field effect but it has a little harsher blur than you usually see in camera.
For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, it's usually based around the actor for medium to close up shots. The actor is even sometimes partially blurred. I can't say that I've seen it in action shots so it could easily be a static mask of a lens blur?
    Thanks.
    Caleb

I know some of the effects in earlier versions of Premiere were Windows only, perhaps this is one of them.

  • Photoshop lens blur: radius 4 = no effect?

Why allow me to specify a radius < 4 if values below that will have no effect?
Try it yourself: set up a Lens Blur with no other effects (brightness, DOF etc) and apply it to a duplicated layer. Now run difference between the two layers - all balck = no difference.
Why can't I get more subtle values below 4?
Same thing with Gaussian blur, though the threshold in that case is .25

  • Crash with Directional Blur effect on 12-core Mac with After Effects CS5

We've gotten a few reports of crashes when applying the Directional Blur effect (and modifying its properties) in After Effects CS5 on a 12-core Mac. See this post for details and a proposed workaround.
Please use this thread for feedback on this crash and the proposed workaround. Is it working for you? Do you have this crash on a different system?

The "Unexpected data type" error bug and the crash with Directional Blur have been fixed in the After Effects CS5 (10.0.2) update.
Let us know after you've installed the update whether this is working for you.

  • Lens blur problem (depth layer gives a hard edge)

I have rendered out an RGB pass and a depth pass from my 3d package and dropped them into AFX using the lens blur filter to create some depth of field
After juggling with some of the settings I have got the focal distance I want but as you can see from the image I have a hard edge to my RGB layer.
Its as though the LensBlur effect is only working inside the matte of the layer its been applied to.
Ive tried precomping the layers and turning alpha channels off to see if that makes difference but no luck.
Can anyone suggest why the depth pass isnt blurring the edge too?
    Thanks

    Thanks for your input guys.
I did have the effect applied to the layer so I then precomposed it as suggested which has worked...... (see attachment)
However I now have a new problem!
I actually need the the focus to be reversed, with the background sharp and the foreground blurred.
I tried 'inverting the depth map' in the lens blur settings but it gave me the same problem as before with the hard edges....
Any ideas on how to get the focus working the other way around?

  • Has anyone solved or worked around the After Effects CC red flash frame glitch?

I can't find any mention on any forums of the After Effects CC red flash frame glitch later than Feb. 2014. I just installed 12.2 (which was my first CC version) on my macpro and started getting the red flash frames randomly, but with increasing frequency, in my projects. I have never had this problem before on any previous computer or version for AE. The forums I've read have referenced ProRes source footage, outputs to ProRes, and lens blur. My project uses all of these things.
If there is a universally accepted solution/work around, I haven't seen it definitively. Do I not use ProRes source footage? Do I not render to ProRes 4444? Do I not use the lens blur effect? Do I give up and go back to CS6?

    Hi Keith,
I have the "same" issue with the red frames in AFX CC
I have seen them first, as I resized a prores4444 HD to a smaller format and saw the redframes in the preview window.
Setup in AFX: I created a comp from the HD Prores4444 footage and put this comp in a comp with resolution of 960x540.
The output format was again prores4444.
I shuttled through the clips in the small comp and I saw the red frames too.
When I switched to the HD comp at the same position everything was fine.
I "solved" the problem by flushing the cache, twice. Because after the first purge I was only able to render the first clip. The second one had the red frame problematic again.
Maybe It has something to do with hardware accelerated layers.
    I'm using a MacPro running OSX 10.8.5 with a Nvidia GTX680.
    Cheers
    Michael

  • After Effects - Multiprocessing not allowed even when a Proxy is used?

    Hi everybody!
I have a composition (Comp1)  that uses an effect which doesn't allow multiprocessing (e.g., Lens Blur) -- this I understand.
Comp1 is used inside of Comp2.  When I pre-render Comp1 and use that render as a proxy for Comp1 inside of Comp2, I still can't use multiprocessing.  This is the confusing bit.  I'd think since the Lens Blur effect isn't actually being rendered, it shouldn't give me any guff.
Alas, it does.  Anyone else run into this?  Is there a workaround, or is it a bug/oversight by our friends at Adobe?
Thanks in advance as always -- this forum is a great resource!

    Hi Dave,
I appreciate your help, but I think I'm still missing something.  When I set a proxy movie for my Comp1, come render time, it should never look inside Comp1 at all — it should just use the proxy movie.  The LensBlur effect is not applied to Comp1 itself, it's used INSIDE Comp1.
To what end would AE look inside the real Comp1 when it's been assigned a proxy movie?

Subject: After Effects - Multiprocessing not allowed even when a Proxy is used?
Typically, a proxy is a low-resolution substitute for the real image to make AE work a little faster, right?  When AE renders, it doesn't render the proxy, it uses the high-resolution real image, right?  The same thing is happening in your project.
If it doesn't impact your work to use a lower-resolution substitute for your comp 1, I'd suggest not using the substitute as a proxy.
If full resolution matters, make a full-resolution prerender.

  • Crummy Camera Lens Blur CS6

The Camera Lens Blur effect that came with AE CS 5.5 and CS 6 doesn't look nearly as good as the old Lens Blur effect that came with CS 5; it's pretty much unusable for my purposes. Foreground elements that should be sharp render sharp, but with a blurry halo around them. The old Camera Lens blur does not exhibit this behavior, nor the Frischluft Depth of Field plugin.
Here's an image showing the depth map and how the three plugins render it:
    CameraLensBlur.png
The images are composited from 16-bit PNGs rendered out of Cinema 4D. There's a nasty halo visible around the foreground particle in the upper left in the CS6 Camera Lens Blur version. I saved the old Lens Blur effect as a preset out of a CS5 project and am, fortunately, still able to use that approach in CS6 since the "improved" version of the plugin looks pretty crummy (I skipped AE CS5.5). As a test I installed the demo of Frishluft's Lenscare plugins, and after inverting the depth buffer in the plugin I got a good result.
The "new" Camera Lens Blur is acting like the Compound Blur effect. Foreground elements appear sharp but with a blurry halo since the entire "background" is being blurred, creating a blurred ghost of the foreground element. The old Lens Blur effect was very slow, but it did work.
Anyone know how to make this new "improved" Camera Lens Blur look like the other plugins?  I've posted a zipped file with the image and depth map in a small AE CS6 project here if anyone here would care to check my settings.  Maybe I'm missing somthing.
    CameraBlurs folder.zip
    Thank you.

It's been now more than 2 years now that Shawn referred to you this "bug". Thing that I doubt to be a bug. However, after 2 years now, and being on CC 2014.2, this is still ugly when using a depth map. The bokeh is nice, I give you that. But you clearly can't use it with a Dmap. I know it's pretty useless to tell you things that you already know, either make a bug report. It's clear now that it won't get any update.
And as someone here said, if you can't/don't wonna fix it, why can't you simply pack the old Lens Blur from CS5 as an obsolete effect ? Or let's go crazy, just buy the Frischluft (Dat name...) blur which works and pack it.
I would love, of course, to hear from you that you're on it and that a new release is coming soon... Anyway.
Just to remind you, here some pictures of what we are experiencing with your Lens Blur using a depth map.
Halo around the lens on the middle until the screw top right... and cannot be fixed by any way with the focal distance. But yes, the bokeh is really nice.
    And here with the Frischluft
    It simply works.
You could say then, why am I not buying it ? I'm considering it a lot now.

  • Camera Lens Blur CS5.5

Hello. I just installed the new Creative Suite CS5.5 specially for the new features like warp stabilizer and Camera lens blur
I have even upgraded my PC to Intel core i7 - 2nd Generation processor with a normal basic graphic card. As I could not afford a really good one.
My question is..... about the feature Camera Lens Blur.
Inspite of having a very fast processor, the effect Camera Lens Blur takes forever to render..... even at Third or Quarter resolution...... And I am not even rendering a video. I am rendering a Jpeg photo.
why does it happen so? even at such small preview resolution and such fast PC ???
Any solution to make it faster?
I do know....effects like reduce noise and blurs take time....but this takes tooo much even on a JPEG..... So i am afraid....it might take toooo much on a HD video....
    Help me regarding this
    Thankyou,
    Priyank.

Thanks a lot Mylenium and Andrew.
The jpeg was having a huge size of around 4000 by 5000 pixels ........ And I hadnt even Put the fast previews to OpenGL interactive. I reduced the resoution of the Jpeg. And now after doing both...... I am getting awesome reder speed even arnd 150 blur
    Thanks a lot again..

  • Were Expressions available in After Effects 5.0 ?

    Hi all,
I purchased a slightly newer version of After Effects on the internet... I've been using 4.1 and I have a version 5.0 being delivered in a few days.
I'm getting this 5.0 version because I found that it was the first version to have the Caustics and Wave World Effects included, but I think someone here also told me that AE 5.0 was the first version to use Expressions... is that correct?... whoopee!... big step!   ;^D
I'm wondering if the Expressions used in AE 5.0 are the same types of Expressions used in the more current versions of After Effects... I believe the .jsx Expression files are the ones for the current versions of AE.
Also, I was told on this forum that the script files are different from AE 4.1 in the current versions of After Effects... they are .mm files in version 4.1, but I'm wondering if they are like the more current script file formats in AE 5.0... that is, are they the same type of script files in version 5.0 as the more current versions of After Effects?
    Thanks again,
    digi

Scripting was added with the release of AE 6.0.  Moving to 7.0 is a great step forward, as you'll be using the unified interface that still exists today.  Tutorials and guides will start making a lot more sense to you.
Here's some of the other features you will gain from the step up to 7.0:
    5.5
advanced 3D renderer, multiple 3D views, import camera data, colored shadows, projection layers, effects palette, post render actions, advanced lightning, adjustment layer lights, smart mask, looping via expressions, expression controllers,
    6.0
paint, scripting, text animators, OpenGL support, new motion tracker, Rotobezier, Keylight, Liquify, Scribble, Dust & Scratches, background rendering of RAM Previews
    6.5
advanced clone tool, presets gallery, grain management, integration of Final Effects plug-ins, Color Finesse bundling, Photoshop & Illustrator layers support, Photoshop text editing, disk caching, Firewire video output, 1/2/4 point motion tracking, interface light/dark controls, motion track with scale, Grain Surgery bundling, AAF & OMF support
    7.0
new unified window UI, timewarp, graph editor, OpenGL 2.0 support, 32 bpc HDR color, 32-bit audio, Adobe Bridge support, display color management, dynamic link with Premiere Pro, script editor, auto save, Photoshop file creation, smart blur, lens blur, per-character text blurring,
And also if the same Expressions files are being used now as the ones in AE 5 or AE 7, it would be interesting to find out about too.
AS Mylenium said, Expressions have changed somewhat since 5.0.  In 5.5 Expression Controllers were added, which made a huge difference to their capabilties. But you need to understand that expressions don't exist in any file format.  They are simply lines of code which are entered manually within the AE interface.  If you want to use an expression you find in a tutorial, you have to copy and paste it into AE. There are no Expression "files".
There have been a few new bits and pieces added to the Expression's capabilities over the years, but the vast majority of expressions that work today will work in AE 7.0.
Scripts DO exist as files, but like Expressions have evolved slightly, but not radically, since AE 7.0.  Most Scripts should work without problem for you.

  • Lens Blur / Lenscare glitch

    Hey,
I'm currently trying to put some nice DOF into a 3dsmax render. I loaded the render (EXR) with a seperat ZPass into After Effects, put it into 32 bits and as soon as I apply either After Effects' own Lens Blur effect or Frischluft's Lencare, I get this weird glitch:
It changes slightly, once I assign the ZDepth-layer, but largely remains the same. This glitch doesn't occur when I apply the effect in 16 bits or 8 bits, but sadly the lens blur effects don't work properly in these modes when handling EXR files. I tried both CS6 and CS5.5, same result.
I googled for hours but couldn't find anyone experiencing similar problems. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your reply. The Compander effect doesn't change anything, no matter which settings I apply. My working space color management is set to "off". I tried both sRGB, Adobe RGB and Apple RGB with "Lineralize working space" on and off, but it only made the glitch go white or produce an error message. By the way, my EXR-sequence is set to "Preserve RGB", which also doesn't have any effect on the glitch.
