Lens Blur / Lenscare glitch

Hey,
I'm currently trying to put some nice DOF into a 3dsmax render. I loaded the render (EXR) with a seperat ZPass into After Effects, put it into 32 bits and as soon as I apply either After Effects' own Lens Blur effect or Frischluft's Lencare, I get this weird glitch:
It changes slightly, once I assign the ZDepth-layer, but largely remains the same. This glitch doesn't occur when I apply the effect in 16 bits or 8 bits, but sadly the lens blur effects don't work properly in these modes when handling EXR files. I tried both CS6 and CS5.5, same result.
I googled for hours but couldn't find anyone experiencing similar problems. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your reply. The Compander effect doesn't change anything, no matter which settings I apply. My working space color management is set to "off". I tried both sRGB, Adobe RGB and Apple RGB with "Lineralize working space" on and off, but it only made the glitch go white or produce an error message. By the way, my EXR-sequence is set to "Preserve RGB", which also doesn't have any effect on the glitch.

  • Crummy Camera Lens Blur CS6

The Camera Lens Blur effect that came with AE CS 5.5 and CS 6 doesn't look nearly as good as the old Lens Blur effect that came with CS 5; it's pretty much unusable for my purposes. Foreground elements that should be sharp render sharp, but with a blurry halo around them. The old Camera Lens blur does not exhibit this behavior, nor the Frischluft Depth of Field plugin.
Here's an image showing the depth map and how the three plugins render it:
    CameraLensBlur.png
The images are composited from 16-bit PNGs rendered out of Cinema 4D. There's a nasty halo visible around the foreground particle in the upper left in the CS6 Camera Lens Blur version. I saved the old Lens Blur effect as a preset out of a CS5 project and am, fortunately, still able to use that approach in CS6 since the "improved" version of the plugin looks pretty crummy (I skipped AE CS5.5). As a test I installed the demo of Frishluft's Lenscare plugins, and after inverting the depth buffer in the plugin I got a good result.
The "new" Camera Lens Blur is acting like the Compound Blur effect. Foreground elements appear sharp but with a blurry halo since the entire "background" is being blurred, creating a blurred ghost of the foreground element. The old Lens Blur effect was very slow, but it did work.
Anyone know how to make this new "improved" Camera Lens Blur look like the other plugins?  I've posted a zipped file with the image and depth map in a small AE CS6 project here if anyone here would care to check my settings.  Maybe I'm missing somthing.

It's been now more than 2 years now that Shawn referred to you this "bug". Thing that I doubt to be a bug. However, after 2 years now, and being on CC 2014.2, this is still ugly when using a depth map. The bokeh is nice, I give you that. But you clearly can't use it with a Dmap. I know it's pretty useless to tell you things that you already know, either make a bug report. It's clear now that it won't get any update.
And as someone here said, if you can't/don't wonna fix it, why can't you simply pack the old Lens Blur from CS5 as an obsolete effect ? Or let's go crazy, just buy the Frischluft (Dat name...) blur which works and pack it.
I would love, of course, to hear from you that you're on it and that a new release is coming soon... Anyway.
Just to remind you, here some pictures of what we are experiencing with your Lens Blur using a depth map.
Halo around the lens on the middle until the screw top right... and cannot be fixed by any way with the focal distance. But yes, the bokeh is really nice.
    And here with the Frischluft
    It simply works.
You could say then, why am I not buying it ? I'm considering it a lot now.

  • Blur with gradient tool / Lens blur

    Hi everybody,
I want to make some blur effects like miniature effect or open apperature lens blur.
Currently I'm using the gradient tool with negative sharpness. But I think in 100% zoom, the effect looks a litte bit like on/off. Or is the visible effect just non-linear??
Furthermore it would be create to simulate a lense blur effect in the corners. Currently I have to add at minimum 4 gradients, one in each corner. That's no effective
Otherwise it would be possible to implementate a radial gradient mask additionally to the normal linear gradient. Also a reflected gradient mask, would be useful.
    Lightroom is great!!
    Thanks,
    Leschi

-51 to -100 sharpness is lens blur.  It's power is limited by the amount of time it takes to calculate this sort of effect - bigger = longer.

  • Lens blur problem (depth layer gives a hard edge)

I have rendered out an RGB pass and a depth pass from my 3d package and dropped them into AFX using the lens blur filter to create some depth of field
After juggling with some of the settings I have got the focal distance I want but as you can see from the image I have a hard edge to my RGB layer.
Its as though the LensBlur effect is only working inside the matte of the layer its been applied to.
Ive tried precomping the layers and turning alpha channels off to see if that makes difference but no luck.
Can anyone suggest why the depth pass isnt blurring the edge too?
    Thanks

    Thanks for your input guys.
I did have the effect applied to the layer so I then precomposed it as suggested which has worked...... (see attachment)
However I now have a new problem!
I actually need the the focus to be reversed, with the background sharp and the foreground blurred.
I tried 'inverting the depth map' in the lens blur settings but it gave me the same problem as before with the hard edges....
Any ideas on how to get the focus working the other way around?

  • Removing "Lens blur" halos in shallow DOF photo

I'm working on a portait where I want to give it a more shallow DOF (depth of field) than originally shot. In other words: I want to turn the background blurry while the foreground and subject should be sharp. I decided to use the Lens blur filter (Filter-Blur-Lens blur) for this.
Basically I just duplicated the image to a new layer, turned that layer into a smart object, added lens blur to it, then used a gradient filter on the mask in order to make the blur fade away in the front (just like a camera lens wide open would). Finally I used a brush to carefully remove (mask) the blur from the subject, revealing the (unblurred original image) bottom layer.
The problem is that the blurred layer also introduces a "halo" around things which isn't very attractive (see screenshots below). Is there a way to make the background blurry without adding halos? I've tried Gaussian blur as well but the same problem was there. I'm using Photoshop CS4 on a Mac.
    Original image
Duplicated layer blurred (lens blur) -notice dark "halo" above hair
Masked to reveal sharp (original) layer for subject. The halo is of course still there. Not very flattering

Mask it ahead of time, using Refine Edge to make a new masked layer showing just the portion of the image you want in the foreground.
Then use the mask to select the subject in the background, expand the selection some, then use Content Aware Fill to remove the subject from the background.
THEN blur the entire background.  The results can end up surprisingly believable.
Refine Edge makes it possible to do quite complex subjects...

  • CS 5.5 plug-ins - sans Lens Blur Filter

hello the BASIC Lens Blur filter from AE 5 is NOT showing up in AE 5.5 - and yes its in the correct folder in AE 5.5 but its not a choice in the effects menu
    any solution suggestion?

Lens blur is not included in 5.5 as a selectable option.
However, you can add lens blur to a layer in CS5, then open or import the project in CS5.5. The filter will show up and you can copy and paste it to another layer. It's kind of a wonky workaround, but it will work.
I'd love to see a project where the new filter won't do what the old one did. Blur map is the new Depth Map. If you have an example, even WO footage I'd love to take a look at it.

  • Lens Blur in After Effects

  • Lens Blur Speed

I have recently upgraded both my computer (from a 2005 G5 to a 2010 Quadcore Mac Pro) and my Photoshop (CS4 to CS5). I've extensively optimized my new Mac Pro to work best with CS5 and in general I'm seeing excellent improvements all around. CS5 is about 5x faster with the new system. The selection and masking tools are an absolutle joy to use as they are not only faster, but are producing profoundly better results.
However, the Lens Blur filter is running at just about the same speed as before. Using the same image and the same mask to drive the blur, I'm getting a time of just under 5 minutes on both machines. You would think even at the most redumentary level, the faster CPU speed would confer some sort of benefit on the new system.
Worse still, whatever is happening with the Lens Blur process on the new system is stalling most other tasks on the machine, preventing me checking e-mail or accessing other programs during the Blur. This was not true on the G5 with CS4. Activity Monitor shows CS5 only using one of four cores (though the task gets broken up into chunks in a seemingly random pattern)
My theory is that this task was able to use both 2.3GHz CPU's in the G5, or at least could leave one free, but it is only able to use one Core, but is somehow tying up the entire processor ont he new 2.8GHz Quadcore.
    Old system:
    2005 G5 dual 2.3GHz
    4GB RAM
    OSX 10.4.11
    CS4
    New system
    2010 2.8GHz Quadcore Mac Pro
    12GB RAM
    OSX 10.6.4
    CS5

Thanks for your response. I am using a 1024K tile size and a RAID0 scratch disk. (My understanding was that SSD is not appropriate for scratch.) My previous system does not have the benefit of any optimized disks - in fact, that computer's disk are nearly full, which should slow the performance on the older machine and at least give the illusion of better perfomance on the new one.
Is the scratch disk an issue here if RAM is not full? (I would be surprised if all 12GB were filled by this operation.)
As I said, the general performance has been good, but the Lens Blur filter, even at one core, seems to be awfully slow.

  • LR/PS - Applying the Lens Blur Filter for Selective Focus | Adobe Evangelists - Julieanne Kost | Adobe TV

In this episode of The Complete Picture, Julieanne Kost shows us how to get great results with the Lens Blur Filter in Adobe Photoshop CS4.
    http://adobe.ly/x3bXus

After you make the blur over the full picture, you quickly switch to the gradient panel, but you say it so fast that I don't know what you pressed to get there. It sounds like you say tap the "g" key for gradient. But when I do that, the paint bucket tool appears. Help?

  • Lens Blur not showing in After Effects CC 2014 Release

    Hi,
As I'm new to the After Effects - Video Copilot environment I can't figure this out that why, after having the plugin in the Effects folder I can't see Lens Blur in Effects>Blur and Sharpen>Lens Blur?
I'm working on the project named ParticleDesign which can be viewed here. How can I fix this problem?
I can only see Camera Lens Blur as the only blur effect close to Lens Blur...

There has not been a Lens Blur effect in After Effects for several versions. It was replaced with the Camera Lens Blur effect years ago.

  • Scrubby sliders in the Lens Blur Filter in PS CC 2014 behaving erratically.

The scrubby sliders in the Lens Blur Filter in PS CC 2014 are behaving erratically. In PS CC no problems. I may be mistaken, but I think I read somewhere that this filter only works on 8bit images.
In PS CC it works on 16bit, and in PS CC 2014 (no third-party plugins) nothing works. Could this have something to do with the Graphic Card, or Cache Levels? All advice appreciated.

Sorry, no solution to the problem, but a confirmation. I do have the same problem (Intuos Pro and Pen & Touch) showing the problem with ACR 8.5 and Photoshop (2014, CC and 6, these were updated with ACR 8.5) . No such problem before ACR 8.5 and no problem with LR 5.5 (also containing ACR 8.5).
I hope there will be a solution from Adobe soon, since sems to be caused by the ACR update.
Windows 8.1 in my case and latest Wacom Intuos driver installed.

  • Maya z Depth Lens Blur in AE CS5 Problem

    Hello,
The lens blur effect with a z depth file mapped in the depth map layer does not seem to work in CS5. Although when I use lens blur in CS4 with the same file, it works. Is there a solution for this?
My z depth file is targa extension and rendered in Maya.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I just tried it, and it works for me. If you upload your project, I can take a look.

  • Using Camera Lens Blur Filter / Mask

I have a question concerning the lens blur and I hoping someone can point me to a good tutorial.
I have several interview segments and I would like to do a small digital zoom at the end of each clip. The background is slightly out of focus already and it doesn't look natural to zoom when the bokeh is not changing.
I have a good handle on the filter but I am not that experienced with advanced mattes. I need to learn how to get the matte on the person and stay during the zoom so I can manipulate the background. The subjects are seated on a stool so their is very little movement.
Did some searches but I am probably not searching the right keywords. Can anyone point me in the right direction.
    Thanks.

Masking? Rotsoscoping? I can think of a million ways to create separated layers or mattes and then duplicate the layer and invert the masks/ matte, but if you never have used that stuff before, you will hard-crash on concrete and not get very far, I'm afraid. It takes at least a bit of practice to produce a clean matte. As a palce to start you may get by suing the Rotobrush and see, if it produces clean enough edges, but if not, it's proably better to scrap the idea before eitehr ending up with a bad result or not meeting your deadline...

  • Cs6 camera lens blur not using curve ajustment on blur map

So I am doing some camera lens blur to create the 'tiny town' effect. I have completed following this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oleQ9O3kaPk
But the camera lens blur doesn't seem to be taking into account any curve ajustments I make.
It is creating the blur effect as if the curve is not activated (even though it is and I can visibly see my ajustments to the gradient on the shape layer).
Anyone know what the problem is?

It works as it should. Effects referencing otehr layers use the layer source, not the effects result. You need to pre-compose the adjusted depth map.

  • Camera Lens Blur CS5.5

Hello. I just installed the new Creative Suite CS5.5 specially for the new features like warp stabilizer and Camera lens blur
I have even upgraded my PC to Intel core i7 - 2nd Generation processor with a normal basic graphic card. As I could not afford a really good one.
My question is..... about the feature Camera Lens Blur.
Inspite of having a very fast processor, the effect Camera Lens Blur takes forever to render..... even at Third or Quarter resolution...... And I am not even rendering a video. I am rendering a Jpeg photo.
why does it happen so? even at such small preview resolution and such fast PC ???
Any solution to make it faster?
I do know....effects like reduce noise and blurs take time....but this takes tooo much even on a JPEG..... So i am afraid....it might take toooo much on a HD video....
    Help me regarding this
    Thankyou,
    Priyank.

Thanks a lot Mylenium and Andrew.
The jpeg was having a huge size of around 4000 by 5000 pixels ........ And I hadnt even Put the fast previews to OpenGL interactive. I reduced the resoution of the Jpeg. And now after doing both...... I am getting awesome reder speed even arnd 150 blur
    Thanks a lot again..
