Lens Correction Question

Well, I am happy to report that I completed an "optimize catalogue" and my Lightroom 3 appears to be working faster. Fantastic.
What I don't get now has something to do with the Lens Correction module.
Here's my example. When I select "Enable Profile Correction" the software correcntly picks out the make and model of my Nikon lens. Great.
However, previously, I was noticing that under "profile" it used to give me the Nikon D3X ... lens ... etc etc info.
I no longer get that. All my photos are profiled using the "Adobe (lens Nikon etc etc)" profiles. When I click on that box, there is no option to use the Nikon profiles.
Question: Is this an issue I should be worried about? I have noticed on various tutorials that the Nikon and Adobe profiles differ ever so slightly.
I am concerned about not being able to get accurate profiles.
I have fiddled with going between "default" and "auto" in the "setup" drop down, but I am only able to load the Adobe profiles for the make and model of my lens. (I only shoot Nikon by the way).
Perhaps I am overanalyzing this but I would like my software to have the most accurate profiles and I believe the Nikon profiles are slightly more accurate than the Adobe ones.
Can someone shed some light on this for me?

"There are two seperate "profile" areas now. You need to scroll down to the 'Camera Calibration' panel, where you will find your "camera" profiles.
Your camera lens will be automatically detected in the Lens Correction panel, that is if it is a lens model in the database. Otherwise no lens model will show up and you will have to select 'Manual' to make your own profile. This is the case for my Sigma F2.8 Macro lens – It is NOT listed."
Thanks for the reply however, Under the Camera Calibration module there are no camera's listed. All I see listed under the profile tab in the Camera Calibration module is:
ACR 4.4
ACR 4.3
Adobe Standard
Camera D2X Modes 1 through 3
Camera Landscape, neutral, portrait, standard and vivid
My question is focussed on the lens correction. The correct lens is listed in that module but the Nikon profiles that were present before optimization are no longer there instead replaced by Adobe's profile for the selected Nikon lens.

For what it's worth, I also see a timeout on the first [ Search Online ] click, after about half a minute delay. Second click turns up results immediately. This happens each time Lens Correction is started, even without restarting Photoshop, and in both 32 and 64 bit versions. Also note that I started with one profile listed by default (though from the wrong camera) for my 40D with 28-135 zoom.
I alsow noticed that I was seeing progress bar activity in the Lens Correction dialog while I was typing this (even though Lens Correction was NOT the active window) every time I hit the 'L' key. Strange.

CS2 question Filter- Distort- Lens Correction

Comrades...
When using the lens correction pane (Filter-> Distort-> Lens Correction) in CS2 I have never been able to use the hand tool to move a scaled (or not) image within the preview window. It just doesn't function.
eg., when correcting for vertical perspective the upper portion of the image is "cropped" by the top of the preview window and additional transparent canvass appears at the bottom. I'd like to pull the image down to center it but alas... no functioning hand tool.
Is this tool just broken or am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance for your advice.
(Intel and older G4 mac- same problem)

What I think you're looking for is a Move Tool not a Hand Tool.
The Hand tool is for navigating in an image. It doesn't move the pixels around.
The Move Tool is for actually moving the pixels around on the canvas.
There appears to be no such tool in lens correction.

Lens Correction and JPEGs

Hi,
I'm new to LR. I've spent the last two months watching every tutorial, practicing with a portfolio/video instructional off the Adode site and reorganizing my own photos and folders on my computer.
I finally took the "bold" step to put a few of my photos into LR. All my photos are from either a Nikon 3000 or 3100 with the same lens AF-S DX Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED.
Also, all my photos are JPEGs.
1) In Lens Correction > Profile > Enable Profile Correction there are 3 options
Default (no make/model options)
Auto (no make/model options)
Custom > when I click this I get the model and Adobe profile for the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED
Is the Adobe profile the same for both lenses? The 14-24 and the lens on my camera - the 18-135?
Default and Auto look the exact same. If I click Custom, the image becomes a little more exposed. To my eye, Default/Auto look better.
2) Also, should I "check" chromatic aberration for all my photos? I'm not sure how this feature works in LR with JPEGs.
3) Considering where I am and my skills at this point, what is the best recommendation going forward, for learning LR and working with my JPEGs.
Since I'm going to be essentially working only with JPEGS for a while, what lens correction should I use with these photos? Default/Auto/Custom?
4) Are there any other settings that I need to pay attention to with the camera/lens/file type that I am using while trying to learn LR?
I'm starting to realize from my readings, that JPEGS will have a more limited range of development in LR and "LR will display only the profiles available for the file type of the selected image." Lens profile support | Lightroom 5, 4, 3 | Photoshop CS6, CS5 | Camera Raw 8, 7, 6
I want to become a more serious amateur and enthusiastic photographer, but I also don't want to spend 15 minutes editing/developing every semi-decent photo I take.
As an aside, my 3100 has a shutter problem, so I will be upgrading at some point (probably Micro 4/3) and I plan to explore shooting RAW or a combination of RAW/JPEG somewhere down the road.

As I understand lens correction profiles, most are written for RAW photos only, and there are only a few profiles written for JPGs. That would explain why you don't see your specific lens under Custom.

I'm certainly not the biggest expert on chromatic aberration, but it seems to me that the chromatic aberration algorithms are looking for certain types of coloration at "edges", and I don't see why that would be different for JPGs compared to RAWs.
But I'm confused by the actual question ... checking the box and seeing if it makes the photo better seems so simple that I don't really understand why you had to ask the question.

Again, the learning process in Lightroom is ... just do it. You can't harm your photos, you can always undo whatever you did that you didn't like. The lens correction you choose is the one that makes the photo's appearance look best to you.

Any setting and any slider and any tool might be the right one for your photo. There is no general setting that EVERYONE uses, as the reason software provides options is that some people want it one way, and other people want it a different way.

The learning curve can be difficult, but as I said, editing your photos will never harm your originals, and you can always undo whatever you did. So ... just do it.
I am concerned that even as a beginner, you think it might take you 15 minutes to edit a single photo. Unless you are doing a HUMONGUS amount of brushing, this should never take 15 minutes, even for a beginner. Yes, of course if you want everything to be absolutely PERFECT, then it will take longer, but there really is no such thing as a PERFECT photo. Your goal ought to be (in my opinion) making the photos look GOOD, and learning what the sliders and tools do as you go. And certainly there is no unique determination of what a GOOD photo is, a photo that looks GOOD to you may not look good to someone else, but that's kind of irrelevant, its your photo, it should only matter that it looks GOOD to you.
You said you watched tutorials, are these tutorials helping, or not? Do you feel you have learned the basic purpose of (some of) the develop sliders and develop tools, or not?

Lens correction settings in LR3

Hi guys! I have downloaded LR3 yesterday and played with trial version for a few hours now. Looks like a very welcome upgrade over the 2.x version. However I cannot fully appreciate the way lens corrections module is supposed to work.
I am a nikon user with 28-75 Tamron lens. After setting "custom" lens correction profile and choosing Tamron as lens manufacturer, LR3 accurately suggests my lens model and assigns an existing adobe profile. So far so good. But there is one thing that keeps me from feeling all happy and excited about this new feature: Lightroom would not allow to save different default settings for various focal lengths. For instance, the named above 28-75/2.8 tamron lens has somewhat considerate barrel type distortion at 28mm, and at the same time at its maximum of 75mm geometry distortions are almost non-existent. So while I am happy with how LR3 handles the wide angle distortions, it makes things a lot worse with telephoto range when I apply default lens corrections.
Hence the question: can I somehow make settings in lens corretions module specific to the focal length used? Of course, I would like LR to do that for me, but since it cannot, is there any walkaround? Tweaking settings for each shot is time consuming, and I see no reason not to make this process a little bit more automated.

Adani2, I have encounter similar problems with the same lens on my Canon 1D Mark III (a 1.3x crop camera).
The quick answer to your question is no. There is no setting in Lightroom that allows for correction at a specific focal length, apparently the software is suppose to automatically determine that. I use to have a D80 with the Tamron 28-75 before I switched to Canon. So I decided to process a few shots with LR3 to see if your problem was the same as what I encountered on my 1D3.
I used LR3's lens correction on three pictures, each a different focal length (28, 40, and 75). At the extreme ends, I found 28 and 75 to not vary much from the same image corrected with PTLens (the current progam I use to correct lens distortions). However, at 40 I ran into the same cropping and over correction problem I did with my Canon 1D (albiet it is much worse on the 1D than the D80). Below is a picture taken at 40mm (f2.8) with the Tamron 28-75 on my old Nikon D80 with the "corrected" image overlayed on top (opacity 50%):

Interestingly, the difference between PTlens and the original image for the above shot is virtually zero which is consistant with reviews about this lens (http://www.photozone.de/nikon--nikkor-aps-c-lens-tests/291-tamron-af-28-75mm-f28-sp-xr-di- ld-aspherical-if-nikon-lab-test-report--review?start=1). Why LR3 believes there is distortion when there isn't any is rather perplexing.
My suggestion, for this lens on a crop body, would be to not bother making any lens corrections except for critical pictures (e.g. architecture) taken around 28mm. The distortions for this lens are, for all practical purposes, negligible on cropped camera bodies.

Lens Correction Manual Slider Bug!

I've been having a problem with the Lens correction Manual Sliders. Constrain Crop selected.
The vertical and horizontal sliders are behaving more like the distortion slider.
When sliding left or right they are pulling from the center, rather than the right or left end.
Also, with the scale slider....If I scale down it shifts to the right. when I reset all the sliders to zero.
The image doe not reset to its original position.
Is this something that the Lightroom 4 team is aware of?
One all the bugs are fixed I look forward to its release! Your hard work on this software is appreciated!

Well, they *are* distortion sliders (sort of), leaving the very center of the photo unchanged. This has not changed from LR3. I can see no bug there. Also keep in mind that the visual effect is very different from wide angle photos to tele photos. Photos made with a tele lens are more or less just changed in the aspect ratio, and not so much distorted like wide angle photos.
Also, with the scale slider....If I scale down it shifts to the right.
This can happen if you used the horizontal slider before, combined with "Constrain Crop" - because the usable part of the photo shifts to one side or another. In the same way, scaling will shift up/down if one used the vertical slider before. This is perfectly normal. Hint: Try the vertical and horizontal sliders independently, with scaling set to 50 (minimum) and "Constrain Crop" *OFF* to see what they do with the photo - that made it a lot clearer to me how they work.

Also normal, because if you reset the manual corrections after working with "Constrain Crop" enabled, only the manual corrections themselves are reset, leaving the crop&straighten tool at some "funny" settings. Go to crop&straighten and reset it, too.
In conclusion, I see no bugs here. I also fiddled with the various manual sliders, and could not see any behaviour that was different to LR3, which has no bugs in this respect as far as I know...
P.S. I am not sure if I quoted the last question correctly or not. I assume these two sentences belong together?

has anyone built a lens correction profile for canon g15 powershot? i am new to lightroom and can't see this camera listed in the lens correction list although my pentax DSLR is there. any help gratefully appreciated - i am very new to lightroom so any help in idiot proof language greatly appreciated.

Your camera will only apply lens correction (if switched on) to JPEGs, not to RAW files. Clearly you do not want to apply it twice.

ACR 6.1 vs DXO Lens Correction?

I have been experimenting with the lens correction module in ACR 6.1, which has profiles for two lenses I own, the Nikkor AF-S 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 G and the Nikkor AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 G IF-ED VR, and am quite pleased with the results. The 18-70 lens is a decent consumer grade zoom that has good resolution and little chromatic aberration, but which suffers from distortion at the wide end and vignetting at large apertures. From visual onscreen editing, the vignetting is completely removed from the images and the barrel distortion at wide angle settings is sufficiently well controlled that thus far I have seen no need for manual touching up of the distortion correction.
DxO (an Adobe rival) has criticized the ACR module as offering undercorrection of distortion and vignetting under some conditions, suggesting that the Adobe profiling procedures are not sufficiently rigorous. That may be so, but thus far I have seen no major defects and they gave no examples and I am wondering what the experience of other ACR users might be.

The 70-200 zoom was highly regarded for use with APS sized sensors, but full frame users have noted an alarming degree of softenss in the corners of the image. With ACR, one could attempt to provide extra sharpening at the edges of the image with an adjustment brush, but DXO claims to automatically correct for uneven sharpness across the image field. They don't say how this is achieved, but the web site explanation hints at something more sophisticated than a variable unsharp mask (perhaps a variable deconvoluiton algorithm) and I would be interested how this works out in practice.

I hardly know where to start!
Anyway, looking at the list of available lenses, the list for Photoshop Nikon optics is extensive, and also has at least one error. The list for ACR is far less, and my principal lens isn't present. The problem with that item is that, if you choose Custom and your lens isn't on the list, it reverts to the first lens on the list and corrects the image for that. In Auto, it tells you it isn't on the list, so I would urge the use of Auto at all times when operating with commercially available lenses.
In PSCS5, my basic lens also is not present; (18 to 105 mm), but there is a lens, 18 to 125 which is not in the Nikon line. This appears to be an error. Is this the 18 to 105?
I have serious reservations with the idea of "Photographer Empowerment" with respect to lens corrections. I hope that if you publish this data it is in it's own category to which I can ignore. Lens measurement, data collection and conclusions is an intense activity and is best left to the professionals as is photo editing software. DXO knows what they are doing. The concept of "Photographer Empowerment" indicates to me Adobe does not know what it is doing. This makes me very nervous, to say the least.
Let me give you an example. I ran an image from my 70 to 300mm lens, which is on the charts, through both DXO and ACR 6.1, then set one over the other in Layers. Switching back and forth showe a vast difference in the correction for barrel/pincushion and vignetting. Which is right?
FYI, I always have two sets of raw data when anticipating running the DXO corrections so that there is no preconditioning by either party when running such tests. Also, I use DXO only for lens correction activities. Their RAW converter, imo, cannot compare to even CS3, for reasons I won't go into here. There are cheaper programs for doing barrel, vignette and such, but DXO also provides corrections for other lens errors, which makes it well worth while.
To answer my own question is that, in architectural photos, DXO is on the money. The only way to tell for sure is an optical setup that is precise and repeatable.
Finally, here is a site that uses the DXO software to provide lens tests that are extensive and comprehensive, all for the practicing photographer. Using their data for inclusion in the ACR correction would be a good start, not Photographer Empowerment.

PS CS2 lens correction causes "Maximize Compatibility" issue in LR

Question: why does PS CS2/3 convert the layer "Background" to "Layer 0"?
This is the problem (and solution):
I encountered the widely discussed "Maximize Compatiblity" issue with a bunch of PSD files (slide scans) that contained only one layer. Puzzled as I was that the layer thing apparently could not cause the problem, I reopened some of those files in PS CS3 and I noticed that each of them had had a lens correction. Just to make sure I was on the right track I applied a lens correction to a file that had been already imported into LR successfully and used the SaveAs command and unchecked the Maximize Compatibility option. The new file could not be imported into LR. So no more lens corrections? - I thought.
A closer look on the troublesome files made me learn the (only) layer had been renamed from "Background" to "Layer 0" after the lens correction was made. I used the "Flatten Image" command and this turned it back into "Background". After this, the file could be imported into LR without a problem.
I can now apply this trick to all troublesome files that have had lens corrections and thus avoid the huge increase in file size (130MB is a lot already).
Now I write this for those of you who have the same problem and are still puzzled (to help out) but I also would like to have some insight into why PS CS2/3 lens corrections mess with the layers.

Your conclusion is only partially correct.
Lightroom will import multi-layered PSD files that have been saved with the preference for "Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility" set to On. This is clearly stated in the Release Notes and Help documents:

Photoshop renaming Background Layer to Layer 0 is a Photoshop issue, not Lightroom. When it occurs the files effectively becomes a multi-layered file, even if there is only one layer (i.e layer 0). Why using the Lens Correction filter causes the background layer to be renamed is currently unclear, but I have raised it in the "appropriate" place. In the meantime, I recommend that you set the Maximise Compatibility preference to
Always. Doing so will save non layered files as normal and multi-layered will have the
necessary* composite preview. You can continue to use the flatten command to fix the errant files.
*Enabling the Maximise Compatibility preference ensures that Photoshop creates a composite preview of multi-layered images. It is intended to enable applications that can't read layers to preview the images. Lightroom cannot read multi-layered files, therefore the composite preview MUST be present in such files.

Lr 2.0 will function as per Lr1.x; i.e. not using Maximize Compatibility when saving multi-layered files will mean that they are not compatible with Lr2.0.

How to apply lens correction profile to multiple images at once?

I have a quick newbie question and I couldn't find an answer in a brief search that I did. Is it possible to apply lens correction profile automatically to multiple images at once? For my RAW images, LR automatically detects the lens and applies the correction profile for an image if I manually click on "Enable lens correction" option under Develop module (in the right pane where adjustments are made). However, I would like to do this to multiple images all at once.

Be careful using develop setting synchronization for lens profile across mutiple images! This allows applying an incorrect profile (i.e. Canon 17-40mm profile with synchronization to images shot with multiple lenses) First use the 'filter' tool to make sure you select images shot with only one (1) lens type. Then follow one of the procedures here:

You can also change the "default" develop settings with 'Lens Profile' option checked and then save as the "new default" setting. LR will then "automatically" apply lens profile correction on import of new images.

More than a question is a little missing detail in CS6 beta
The Canon EOS 60D and the EF-S 18-55 mm IS II in Lens correction filter doesn't exist.

Adobe provides a free tool for you or some other G1X user to create your own profile. http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5489 It doesn't take that all that much effort.

Lens correction

I used to have a long list of lens for my Nikon in Lightroom. Now I suddenly am back to a list of about 8. I am up to date on LR. Any suggestions?

Fujifilm s5 - lens correction - LR thinks S5 is fullframe

This more a bug-report than a question. I've been using the lens correction feature with my nikon d50. This summer I bought a used fujifilm s5 and found out that the lenscorrection does odd things. If I use the (aps-c) sigma 18-50 2.8 lens on the d50, the correction is fin, but when I mount the lens on my s5 and import the .raf to lightroom and try to apply correction, it overcorrectlies the picture. The edges around the middle go to pure white, much as you would expect the software to behave on a fullframe camera. Also, when I try to correct the fisheye perspective from my nikkor 10.5mm i don't get the correct result when i select that lens, I do get it (with some minimal distortion present) when i select the nikkor 16mm (fullframe) lens.
So: Lightroom 3 think the fujifilm s5 pro is a full frame camera. Where can I report this bug?
