Lens or Camera first? Lens suggestions?

I am looking to jump into the DSLR market.  I am upgrading from a SX10 IS point and shoot which I use fairly exclusively in manual settings.  I am looking to get into many different types of photography including: landscape, time lapse, star trail, action sports (both indoor and outdoor), and a general goto camera.
I do not work as a professional by any means, nor do I get out every weekend to shoot pictures.  However, in the coming years, I will be doing a lot of traveling (camping, touring other cities, backpacking, etc) so it will get used a lot more heavily.  I am looking to try and keep the whole purchase under 2k.
I have read many posts across the internet on the subject saying one side or the other.  I also have read rumors of new cameras coming out in early 2013.  I have family members that already have canon lenses that I could borrow, I just dont know which ones they exactly have.  Eventually I would be looking to make my own collection though.
Cameras that I have been considering are the 7d,60d, or the t4i.
I like the shooting speed of the 7d and can afford the cost, but will have to settle with the kit lens that comes with it for a while.
I like the 60D because I have heard a lot of good reviews on the image quality and the pictures I have seen of sky photography.  (I know this has a lot to do with the lens as well).
Then the t4i because of it realatively inexpensiveness and I could buy an extra lens or 2.
I would like to keep my sx10 but can trade it in for the loyalty program maybe?

There will always be rumors of new camera coming out, so I think you just have to bite the bullet and buy when its a good time for you.

I think you have a pretty good evaluation of your options, and the benefits and tradeoffs of each model in terms of capability and opportunity cost.  Good catch also on knowing your family members and any lenses they have are an excellent resource to keep in mind.
My first question is to find out what they have.  If they have a wide assortment, I'd recommend that you can opt for a 'better' camera/body sooner.  Otherwise, I think its a great idea to start with a T4i.  In the whole scheme of things, its a very inexpensive body, and the money you save to put towards building up your own collection of great lenses will be worth it.
As a professional now, I started out with a T2i back when it was the newest T#i.  I used this as an opportunity to get used to the Canon user interface for the manual settings that I understood already (coming from a video background).  It sounds like you will have a similar situation.  Then, I worked on developing my creative eye, and using and understanding the capabilities of different 'cheaper' lenses (the kit 18-55mm and a 55-250mm telephoto, then soon after the 'nifty-fifty' -- you'll understand these references after your first few months with a DSLR).
As I started hitting roadblocks due to lens capabilties/specs, I figured out what I couldn't do that I wanted, what lens could help me with that, and began investing in "good glass".  I borrowed a better camera/body a few times in the past two years, but it literally was not until last month when I finally upgraded from my T2i.
Any decent body/camera will do when it comes help you with the to the most important part of photography: seeing good shots.  Better lenses give you more ways/options of "seeing". Arguably, a camera could too, but I think more accurately, it should be said that it just helps more consistantly capture what you see and are inspired by.
To use an analogy: its like learning how to drive.  You want something reliable and capable to start -- you learn the basic features of the equipment and also the rules of the road.  Then, you can get a "nicer" car and appreciate what makes it nice. (Lenses don't fit very well into this analogy... )

  • Buying a 70D body this week. Any lens suggestions would be VERY helpful.

I know a lot of people debate about getting a camera with a kit lens or getting the body and then a better lens. I am not asking about that. The deal I am getting through Adorama is for the body only so I have to get a separate lens. For right now I just want the best possible "general" lens I can get for a decent price. So I am considering getting the normal 18-55 STM lens that would normally come with the kit but I wanted some opinions about if there was anything better for the price or around the price. This is canons rebate form with some lenses and I would also consider 3rd party lens suggestions. http://www.adorama.com/pdfs/rebates/Canon_MIR_Nov_2014.pdf
If you had to get the body only please let me know what you would get for a general lens. If there is something similar to the kit lens price (or a little higher) that is better I would like to get that. Thank you!!

There are some really good choices out there for lenses but the EFS 18-55mm is one I would not even consider.  Especially for a EOS 70D.  It is a step up camera compared to the Rebel line for which the above lens is intended.  It is always best to keep your equipment level in quality terms.
And if there is a "kit" out there that you like, that is the "best way" to get the lens the cheapest.
The EF 24-105mm f4 L is the best buy in the Canon line.
    EOS 1Ds Mk III, EOS 1D Mk IV EF 50mm f1.2 L, EF 24-70mm f2.8 L,
    EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS II, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 EX APO
    Photoshop CS6, ACR 9, Lightroom 6

  • I AM PRESENTLY CONSIDERING A NEW TRAVEL CAMERA. NEED SUGGESTIONS ON IT

I AM CONSIDERING A NEW CAMERA FOR TRAVEL I PREFER TO CARRY A SMALL COMPACT ONE THAT HAS AS WIDE A RANGE OF ABILITIES AS POSSIBLE.  YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT WILL OCCUR. Ii HAVE TRAVELED WITH A LOT OF LENSES WITH ME AND I FIND THAT I ENJOY THE TRIP MORE IF I KEEP IT LIGHT.  I NEVER CARRIED MUCH ABOUT MOVIES BUT LATELY I HAVE TAKE UP AN INTEREST IN SHOOTING CLIPS. I WANT 1080 CAPABILITIES IN MY NEW CAMERA.. The MOST INFORMANT THING TO ME WOULD BE LENS QUALITY AND THE MATCH OF ZOOM LENS TO M.  PROBABLY ABOUT 16M  BUT 14 COULD WORK.  I  DEFINITELY WANT A SUPERIOR LENS IS OF THE UTMOST CONCERN TO ME.

I suggested this camera to another forum member only moments ago:
Check out the new Canon Digital Elph 110 Hs 16.1 MP. It's not the best over 200 ISO, and it's a bit noisy mechanically speaking, but it's got all the latest Canon goodies. It takes full HD video as good as some moderately priced HD camcorders did only a couple of years ago. My friend, a professional photographer and filmaker, owns one and he uses it when traveling. I've used it and loved it so much I ordered one for my self. I was amazed at the performance and userfriendlyness inherent in this tiny 135g pocket camera. I've seen it listed for as low as $129 from several vendors. The Canon PowerShot Elph 320 HS 16.1 MP is a step up and works better at higher ISO ranges (a lot less noise in the 400 to 800 settings), but it pretty much the same camera in specifications and performance---at twice the price!

  • Which Camera Would You Suggest?

I'm looking for a camera that would be used primarily for taking pictures of my friends and family and of landscapes and scenary. I also want it to be able to take up close pictures of flowers and such. My budget is in between $200-250, but if there is something that you think is absolutely amazing that's under $300, go ahead and let me know. Thank you.

I'm not sure if you are really looking for a camera like this, but I know that the Sony Cybershot h55 is very, very good.  I just recieved this camera and you CAN take amazing pictures with so much detail.  You can definitely take pictures of flowers close up and it will even show dew or water on it if there is on the plant.  This camera can identify smiles, face, childrens' faces, adults' faces, and more. This and more only cost $249.00 at stores and $229.00 online.  I would suggest this camera.

  • Web cam does not override iSight camera. Any suggestions how to do so?

I bought a Logitech webcam but cannot get it to work. The iSight camera comes on instead and overrides the web cam. Any way to fix this?

If your Logitech webcam is Mac-compatible, it should be menu-selectable in the app you are using. Different camera apps work differently. Your Mac's Help in each application should give you more info on how each particular app works, but here are a few examples:
      • Messages:
      • Photo Booth:
      • FaceTime:
      • Skype:
      •   QuickTimeX:
If your camera recognizes only one camera, apps may not display even the inbuilt camera in the menu.
Different iMovie versions support different cameras in different ways.  Search your iMovie > Help for info on your version.

  • I am using elements 8 and have installed the latest RAW plug in, however I am still getting an error message when trying to open files.  My camera (nikon d7100) shows as a supported camera.  Any suggestions?

The plug in version is 6.2.0.29, which shows that is supports my camera.

    Hi Sully172,
    Please check the below link
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
It clearly states that D7100 requires a minimum camera raw version of 7.4
I would advise you to either use the camera raw dng converter or upgrade to Photoshop Elements 13.
    Thanks

  • Pre + Wish List: My first 6 suggestions

I have been using my Verizon Pre +  for a couple of months and some things have moved up on my wish list. For starters:
    1. keyboard control to delete moving forward as well as backward. For example [orange key (now gray)] + [<- ]
    2. keyboard control to move cursor through a message?
    3. An inline search capability for emails and especially for websites.
    4. Sticky thumb... That is suppose you could put your thumb on a webpage or other screen (such as the launcher) and hold it still while doing something else.
    5. Double tap to run apps.  Some things work too fast and I find I am opening up apps I don't want by accident.
    6.  A real predictive spell checker.  (Meanwhile thanks, Rick, for  ACE]
That's it for tonight, but there will be more.

Hello and thank you for using the Palm Help Forums!
Great suggestions but your Pre can do a couple things you listed.
#2 - The device can move through a message. You hold down the option key (blank button below the letter "A") and start moving your finger on the touchscreen while in a text field. It will start moving like a cursor for precision. Also, you can highlight for copy and paste by holding the shift key and moving your finger on the screen to highlight text.
#3 - You want the device to do an inline search for emails and websites. Well, it works partially in your favor. The device has a feature called Universal Search that will search for things on your device and the web. It will search for contact records, applications, and if it cannot find a match it allows you to do a google search (or wiki) on what you are looking for. To utilize this feature, just start typing anywhere on the device (except in a text field) and the device will begin searching. For more information please visit learning.palm.com.
#4 - Hold down the option key and click a link or a picture. You will get options to open the page in a new card, download, share, etc.
With the rest of your feature requests or impovements please visit www.palm.com/feedback to post your information there. You may see some of your wishes come true in a later update.
    I hope this helps,
    -Pat

  • Going to purchase a camera...suggestions?

    I appreciate any/all feedback.
I'm looking to invest in a camera. I'm expecting to pay $5k or so(I know there are extras like P2 cards and such). I just am having a difficult time deciding whether to get Sony's HDV camera or Panasonic's HD (w/ the P2)...or is there an additional similar option?
I will be using it mainly for wedding shoots but I'm worried about having to stop and dump footage onto a laptop while solo at a wedding gig.
Also, would the snobbiest of clients see the difference in HDV vs HD whilst watching on their Blu-Ray player onto their 50" plasmas (I am fully aware of my future Blu-Ray issues i.e. how to make one that my client will be able to play on their player)
    Any thoughts?

The previous doc I worked on we used HVX200's. The last doc we used Sony EX1's.
I was involved in production and post on both. So I understand the cams pretty well, their workflow and limitations both in production and post.
In picking a cam for the last job we shot test footage with an HVX200 and an EX1 at Chapman University and then used a 2k Barco in their theater to compare them.
We were all stunned by the EX1 footage...I mean it was quite remarkable.
I know there are many debates when comparing these two camera's. And people are quite passionate about the 200's, but...
Needless to say we bought two EX1's for the shoot.
Still it's not the cam I would recommend because Sony just released the EX3. Which IMO fixes all my issues with the EX1.
I would definitely recommend checking out an EX3 based on your comment about budget restraints.
B&H has always been cool with me. There are good local places here in SoCal also.
As far as ingesting goes with EX cams, it was a non event. For me the XDCAM Transfer was stable, quite fast and a pleasure to use.
I had a MacBook Pro and bus powered drives to ingest on location. However we had two cams running with 2 cards each and I never had to ingest on location. The DP and and 2nd camera would just give me their cards at the end of the days shoot.

  • Adjustable/Non-adjustable Pro Mouse. Which came first?

Hi all. We have a 17" FP 1GHz, bought in the UK late 2003, which came with the adjustable Pro-mouse - the one with the 3 position ring around the IR. This had become more and more unresponsive and we were lucky to acquire a brand new one on eBay from a German seller. This does not have the ring around the IR.
Purely out of interest, which is the newer design?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Adrian
(Neither are 'Magic'. - 'Er indoors tried one and doesn't like it. I now use it with my iBook.)

Hi again. They are both M5769. Interestingly the original, as supplied with the iMac, says 'Pro Mouse' on the back between the Apple symbol and the adjuster ring; as does the picture on the link you kindly provided Also 'Assembled in Malaysia'
The recent eBay purchase just says 'Mouse' and is assembled in China.
    Curioser and curioser…
    Adrian
Edit: A further anomaly. The original's side grips are just shapes in the clear case, those of the new are white plastic inserts.
Should I be getting out more? :-D

Edit II, In my OP, substitute 'Magic' for 'Mighty'. WTH did that come from?

  • My iPod has two small dots on it. The first one is red and the other is white. The red one came first and a few weeks later the white one showed up. Can I take it to the Apple store and have it exchanged?

I've had it for less than a year and noticed a few weeks ago that it had a red dot on the center of the screen. About a week ago I noticed another dot, a white one, right next to it. I've never dropped it and even went out of my way to buy a decent case to keep it safe. I spent over 200$ on my 4Gen iPod Touch it and I'm very concerned that these dots will spread across my screen. Can I send it to the Apple store by me and have it replaced?

Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store and find out. If defective, within warranty and not abused Apple may exchange it at no cost.

  • I want to enter the info specific to my camera and lens into the lens corrections options in P'shop 2014 and L'room 2015 but they're not on the list. (Nikon D-750 with 24-120 lens). How do I fix this?

I recently upgraded from a Nikon D-7000 to a D-750 with the Nikkor 24-120 mm lens but they aren't on the list of options in either P'shop or Lightroom under camera and lens profiles. Since every tutorial I viewed on the 24-120 lens suggested fixing the distortion issues in P'shop, how do I make the choice without those specific products being on the list? (P'shop 2014, L'room 2015)

A few do shoot in JPEG...I definitely do not!
