Lens shopping help, things to consider.

Because this is a new forum with very few members from the forums I belong to, and one with a lot of questions from people who appear to be fairly new to DSLR’s I thought I’d start a discussion on picking lenses & the flaws in a lot of the internet advice out there. There is a lot more to buying the right lens than just buying the one with the best Image Quality (IQ) when tested by one of the major review sites. Fixed focal length (primes) will almost always get the higher rating when compared to zooms, and in general the more expensive lenses will get the higher rankings. That’s all well & good but very few of us have the required skill set & technique to get even close to to the last few percent of IQ they can deliver while hand holding. If you’re strictly a tripod shooter, you may get close, but that’s not likely the case when shooting without it. Very high shutter speeds help, but you can’t rely on being able to use them for the majority of your shooting.
Relying on user reviews is helpful but that also has it’s flaws because many users don’t have good enough technique to properly evaluate their lens. Many only shoot in Auto or Program mode, and they don’t hold their camera / lens steady enough for the shutter speed the camera selects. Many don’t even know the proper way to hold a long lens, and the longer (more MM’s it covers) the more important it becomes to both hold it steady & use a higher shutter speed.
So what does this mean? I’m suggesting that far too many are trying to pick lenses that don’t fit the job at hand which is getting the shot. Zooms although lower in IQ are more versatile & offer a lot more opportunities than a sharper prime, but more importantly most of us, myself included, will be hard pressed to see that difference in our photos. That doesn’t mean you buy the cheapest version of a lens that has the range you’re shopping for, it means that you should buy the best you can afford and learn how to use it to it’s potential. Putting the purchase off until you can afford the very best in class will cost you a lot of missed photos, & some of those could have been your best work to date.
I’m sure there are other opinions on this & hopefully others will add their thoughts & experiences. I’ve gone through a lot of lenses over the last few years trying to find the very best for my needs, which aren’t mainstream, & I’ve settled on lenses many say aren’t worth buying. It’s a very good thing I didn’t give up & found out who to believe when reading user reviews at different sites.

Image Stabalizers are a very desirable feature , especially for older people like myself. Each lens maker has a different name for it but the idea is the same BUT most consumer grade lenses don't have a setting that allows you to use it while panning (tracking a moving target. IS (AKA OS, VC or VR) is primarily designed to help reduce camera shake while hand holding & shooting a stationary subject. It should be turned off when using a tripod or panning unless it has a panning mode. If it isn't turned off you'll get soft (or slightly fuzzy) images that look a little out of focus. Imagine how many bad user reviews that switch has caused. If the lens does have a panning mode switch don't forget to set it to match your intended use. With Canon lenses Mode 1 is for stationary subjects & Mode 2 is the panning mode. If your lens only has an ON / OFF switch turn IS off to pan.

  • Key things to consider upgrading RMS v9.0 to ORMS v13.0

    Hi All,
My client is currently using RMS v9.0 and are thinking about migrating to ORMS v13.0. We are trying to put together a deck with things to consider for migration. Does anyone have any experience with the migration? Any sort of input will help us.
    Thanks in advance,
    Rajesh

    Hi Rajesh,
You are going to face a lot of challenges in that project!
I doubt you'll be able to get specific advice on what to look out for. You need to handle this like any other large software replacement / redevelopment project. Make sure you do not underplay the analysis that will be required as this is less of a 'migration' project and more of an implentation of a new system. There is no upgrade path from 9 to 13.
As mentioned above, there are wholesale differences in the data models, however I don’t think it’s worth performing an exhaustive data mapping exercise – that’s useful for data migration perhaps, but it's too low level to tell you what the differences are between the systems. You need to understand what has changed functionally and how this impacts on the business processes – this is where the greatest cost for the client will be.
Anyone still on v9 has probably had the software heavily customised and may have custom integration to non-Retek suite products. You'll have the additional challenge of very little Oracle Retail support / expertise so it may be tricky to identify what is base and what is a mod – hopefully in-house support is good?
On top of the functional / gap analysis you will need to give a decent amount of attention to the process change that will be introduced, this includes training requirements.
Ideally integration will need a complete overhaul, but to save time and money the client may expect you to 'make RMS v13 output data as per the current v9 solution' –this may be possible to a certain extent but you'll probably lose some of the new functionality and will borrow trouble for the future.
I've worked with a company that have started a very similar project countless times, only to panic at the scale of change involved and bury their head in the sand again.
Good luck and please keep us informed of your progress / challenges and so on! We can offer better advice if you have more info about the environment (Is other Retek software involved? Is this being replaced as well?)
    Regards,
    Dave

Do any one have a link to a list of things to consider when removing from AD domain a SQL Server 2008 which includes Reporting Services, Analysis Services and Integration Services?
I am taking from an Active Directory domain several servers with SQL 2008 and Reporting Services, Analysis Services and Integration Services. The server will stay on its own without association to any domain, the server will keep its IP address and
the server will not change names.
I have done some research and I got the basic steps including, removing the user accounts from the domain, changing the services accounts, changing jobs and databases from being owned by users from the domain. But...
Are there other things in Reporting Services, Analysis Services and Integration Services internal databases that have an association with the domain AND that will fail after no longer being in the domain?
I've heard of Reporting Services subscriptions failing when the domain user account is no longer there...Are there any other got ya's that any one has encountered?
    Please advice.
Note: I am posting in this forum basically because of what I heard on Reporting Services, but it may be a better idea to post into a more broad forum such as SQL Server Migration section.

  • How to stop Firefox extension 'Shop Helper 0.91.32' from self installing?

Over the last several days the extension Shop Helper 0.91.32 appears on the Firefox browser extension list and creates hyperlinks in many webpages. I have disabled and/or removed this extension several times and it still reappears. 'Shop Helper' acts like a virus, but my Norton s'ware doesn't see or stop it.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

  • Things to consider before shutting down the Server

    Hi,
What are all the things to consider before shutting down the Essbase Server?
Just we need to close the applications and Agent process or do we need to take care any other things also.
    Thanks in Advance

In order to make sure of a soft shut down, I normally would
    - Disconnect all users
    - Prevent connections
    - Unlock all objects
    - Shut down all databases and applications
    - Shut down the Server Agent

  • Need Lens Purchasing Help

    Hi folks,
So first ever post and relative newbie to the world of photography. My issue is this. Currently using a 6D and own the following glass: 70-300 f4-5.6, 24-105 L Kit lens, and 85 1.8. So i feel like I'm covered for most of my type of shooting (portraits, street, daughters outdoor sports, etc). BUT...when my daughters are playing indoor hoops and competing in indoor gymnastics, I feel hamstrung. The 70-200 2.8 would be perfect, but at $2500 is just too expensive. I thought about replacing the 70-300 with the 70-200 2.8, but I feel like i might miss the former too much when they are playing outdoor sports or if I'm looking to shoot wilderness shots and not use a multiplier.
Sooo, my question to you guys is a) would you make the swap i outlined above, b) do you have any suggestions as to other lenses to consider, c) is the non IS 2.8 worth considering as it is much cheaper?
It should be noted that I currently handhold most of the time so the weight of the 2.8 may be an issue. But let's assume I pony up for mono pod in the near future.
Anyway, sorry for the lenghty first post, but I've struggled with this for a month and need help. Thanks for any thoughts you guys (or girls) have.

Someone already mentioned most of the suggestions I'd make...
70-200/2.8L IS Mark II would be tops. Sharp enough to make your eyes bleed, even wide open. But you're right, it's rather pricey. Some alternatives...
70-200/2.8L IS "Mark I", still a great lens if you can find one used.
135/2L IS is a super lens, a full stop faster than f2.8 and very fast focusing. It would complement your 85/1.8 very well, too. (I consider the 135L a "must have" portrait lens with the full frame cameras, but it's also an excellent sports lens.)
Yes, the 200/2.8L II is another super lens, if you need the additional reach on your 6D. An alternative is to get a quality 1.4X teleconverter to use with the 135L, to make for a 189mm f2.8 lens. I use the Canon 1.4X Mark II and it works very well with the 135L.
6D is able to shoot at really high ISOs with little loss... if the lighting in your indoor venues allows, the 70-200/4L IS might be worth a look.... it's also about 1/3 smaller and lighter than the f2.8 versions if weight is a concern. Doesn't come with a tripod ring, tho, so if you want one it'll be at some extra cost.
If it were me, I'd probably go with any of the above before the 70-200/2.8 non-IS... that's the oldest of the Canon 70-200 lineup and probably has the weakest image quality of the bunch. Not that it's bad... It's just not quite as good as the others, IMO. Wide open I'd rank the 70-200/2.8L IS Mark II and 70-200/4 IS the best in terms of IQ, as well as the latest and greatest IS, the rest slightly behind... emphasis on "slightly" tho. I'm also a big believer in IS, after using lenses with it for close to 15 years now.
I don't see any of the above replacing the reach of your 70-300mm. However you might consider eventually replacing that lens with something else, possibly even longer for field sports and wildlife/birds if those are what you mean by wilderness shots. I use the EF 300/4L IS a lot, it's very good both with and without 1.4X teleconverter, especially on a full frame camera, and not much different in size and weight from a 70-200/2.8. Most other long tele lenses will be a little or a lot larger and heavier. There are the Canon 100-400L (similar size), Canon 400/5.6L (a little bigger, very sharp, but I wish it had IS), Sigma 120-400 OS, Sigma 150-500 OS, Sigma 50-500 OS (nicknamed the "Bigma", a clue to it's size and weight), and the recently introduced Tamron SP 150-600mm. There are others, but the above are the more affordable choices and prices for the others tend to be significantly higher.
Some sample images might help with your decisions:
300/4L alone on 5D Mark II (ISO 800, 1/8000, f5.6, handheld.... Top image is cropped from the original for composition, center AF point was on the bird's eye. Below is a more than 100% detail from same image) ...
Normally I wouldn't use such a high shutter speed even for a fast moving bird in flight, but I was shooting in the shadows and didn't have time to adjust my settings for the above shot when that guy suddenly flew close by... I spent 45 minutes trying to get some more good shots of that bird, since it continued to hunt close by, with better settings and other cameras and lenses, but never got another that I felt was as good as the first one!
Now here's a shot with the 300/4L IS + 1.4X II teleconverter, also on 5D Mark II (ISO 1600, 1/250, f8, monopod used partially for self-defense, but thankfully not needed for that purpose.... Top is very slight crop of full image, below is a detail from same image tho I'm unsure of the magnification)...
Next, below are a couple shots made with the 135L mentioned above...
This one with the 135L on an APS-C crop camera (7D, ISO 1600, 1/125, f7.1, handheld)...
And this one on full frame like your 6D (5DII, ISO 6400, 1/200, f2.0, handheld, very low available light)...
I also have tons of shots with 70-200/2.8L IS "Mark I" (below image made with it on 7D, ISO 800, 1/800, f5.6 at 140mm, handheld)...
And with the 70-200/4L IS (also on 7D, ISO 800, 1/640, wide open at f4.0, handheld, avail. light)...
As to the weight of the 70-200/2.8... well I'm just shy of 60 and most of my exercise involves the TV remote... yet I often manage to shoot all day with a 70-200 on one camera and similarly sized 300/4 on another (as well as a bag and vest with a couple smaller lenses, flash, water bottle, extra batteries, lots of memory cards, etc.)... Sure, there are a few ibuprofin tabs involved at times, but it's very "doable".
But if you can, go check out the lens in a store to see if you think you can live with it. If so, great! If not, the 70-200/4L IS is a bit smaller and lighter alternative, as is the 135L (though both are still very solid feeling and well made, like most L-series).
    Have fun shopping!

  • Buying a new mac pro, new things to consider?

    Hello all,
Below is the question I posted in may along with someone's response. I'm wondering if I should still go with the response I received considering the new release of the mac pro 12 core. Did anything change that I need to note in my purchase or is the below response suitable? THANKS!!!!!
    my question:
I need some help in choosing the right specs for my mac pro. I am looking for a computer that will help me in running my small business and keep my art portfolio organized. I'll probably be running several programs at a time (ex. mozilla, itunes, adobe bridge, dreamweaver, illustrator, and photoshop). More specifics below
What i'll be using it for:
    building a few websites
    managing my small business
    large photo file editing
keeping business files, artist receipts, etc
cataloging my art portfolio (large photo files)
storing photos, music, and short videos
    graphic design
    infrequent film editing
    infrequent sound editing
    what programs i'll be using:
CS5 (mostly photoshop, illustrator, bridge, dreamweaver)
    iphoto
    itunes
    maybe minimal finalcut/soundtrack pro
    maybe minimal aftereffects
    Advice?
My concerns are that it needs to run pretty smoothly with multiple programs open, no overheating, plenty of space for file storage and application support.
    Hello washleyill,
My advice would be to buy the standard configuration 2.66GHz Quad Core (i.e. 3 x 1GB RAM, 640GB hard drive) from the Apple store, with the exception of the graphics card which you can buy as a CTO option for $200.00. It is well worth the upgrade from the GT120 - I know, because I upgraded myself last November after using a GT120 for 4 months.
With regard to the memory, if you can afford it now, buy 4 x 4GB from OWC now. If not, I would suggest that you buy 2 x 4GB now, and then add another 2 x 4GB in the future. 16GB of RAM is a much better option than 8GB for your requirements. You can sell the 3 x 1GB RAM to OWC in "part exchange", and there would be little difference in price for 2 x 4GB to the CTO option of 4 x 2GB.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Mac-Pro-Memory#1066-memory
Instead of buying 2 x 1TB hard drives as a CTO option, you could purchase 2 x 1.5TB or 2 x 2TB HDDs for less money, and you would still have the 640GB. Spare drives are always useful. I use my original 640GB as a spare emergency system boot drive (OS and applications) in an external enclosure.
Another alternative is to wait a few more weeks, in case the rumours of the introduction of a new Mac Pro range in June have any foundation.
    Regards,
    Bill

Interesting questions you have posed here.
I am thinking about upgrading from my MB to a MBP and I too intend to run a similar set of programs, and with large RAW photo files in Aperture. I find my MB is struggling and I dont want to invest any money in upgrading it, I will use it as a back up. I like the MBP and the 13" screen version is so handy and portable.
Have you made your decision yet...or are you still sitting on the fence like myself..?

Adding to what others have said create an index and check execution plan whether it is being used by optimizer or not if it is used and query runs fast that index can be kept
You should also take help of DMV
sys.dm_index_usage_stats to see whether index is being utilized or not. refer to user seek user update and user scan col. If Update is very much greater that seek/scan index is probably not utilized , you can consider removing it

  • Blackberry run over by Minibus...need repair shop help in the NY area

Strangest thing happened last year December. (see title)
My Blackberry Curve 8310 still does everything I expect; except display an image on the interior screen which is obviously cracked.
Tried the local repair shops & had them change the screen, no joy but it did display an all white screen image that doesn't change. (no icons)
An associate is en-route to NY and I was seeking opinions on if I should use this damaged Curve as parts for the new Blackberry Curve waiting in NY or try to have it repaired.
All my information along with the SD card is safe, since the damaged unit can still sync with Outlook and Windows after its accident.
For those of you are wondering, how come this is possible.....
I was using a cheap, horizontal carrying case that had a curved metal belt clip on back encased in black plastic that flaked.
I believe the case protected the unit from being reduced to several pieces.
In fact if the bus hadn't rolled over it 2 times (front & rear wheel) and then stopped on the unit with the back wheel....I probably would still be seeing the screen.
Anyways.... make sense to use for parts or repair?

  • Lens correction help needed: Nikon 14-24 used in model shoot...

    Hello,
I just finished a model shoot with 9 models standing in a horizontal line relative to the camera.  Because of the very short working distance I had to use a Nikon 14-24mm lens to fit everyone in, resulting in the end girls being noticeably distorted (unpleasantly "wide").  They certainly won't like that!
I've opened the raw file in CR, but have not found settings for lens correction that fix this.  CR has the correct lens profile, but no matter how I play with the settings manually or automatically, things just don't look right.  Similarly, if I open corresponding TIFF in Filter -> Lens correction, I still run into the same issue.
I've enclosed a sample out-of-the-camera image so you can what I'm talking about.  Hoping there's a way to correct the twp outermost girls w/o sacrificing those in the middle...  They are much slimmer than in the shot.
Running PS CS 5.5 on Win7/64
    Thanks!
    Jerry

    Hi Toasted
I've seen the adds for the DxO Viewpoint and thought they had a great idea on their hands providing it as a Plug-in. However, I've been using the full DxO Optics Pro as my Raw file editor for a couple of years now, and ran your shot through that, and not the plug-in.
Judging my my results, I think the full version is a more powerful tool; the "Volume Anamorphosis" correction in the full version is a semi-automated tool. Simply applying the correction at the initial automated setting still left me with some distortion in the models at either end, which was especially noticeable in the girl on the extreme right. However, I then manually tweaked the setting to the maximum available, to get the result above.
Now, there's no such thing as a free lunch, and you can't get something for nothing, and the same applies here. What's actually happening is that the Volume Anamorphosis is being "corrected" by re-introducing a set amount of Barrel Distortion into the image, oh, and the image has also been cropped, which is most noticeable in the bodywork of the cars on the left and right, but this is unavoidable. It isn't too obvious here, but if you were to have strong horizontals or verticals in the image, you'd see the curvature in them very easily.
Take a look at my own example below.
This was taken with a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8, and in the original the guitarist on the left, and the keyboardist on the right, both had the dreaded "squished head" effect! As you can see that's been fixed, but if you look at the pipes above the lights at the back, the line of the monitor cabinet at the lead singers feet, and the microphone stands, you can plainly see the curves... which is still infinitely preferable to distorted heads!
    Good luck
    Paul

  • Custom Slideshow (photo gallery/shop) help please!

Hi! I am miffing my way around my 1st Muse site and desperate for help with customising a slideshow to perform as a photography gallery and shop.
I would like to make it possible for my customers to preview matte (black/white) and frame (black/white/wood) options and be able to purchase all on the same page. It's important for my workflow that I can integrate this programming into the site, rather than having to upload multiples of the same image with the different variables. Possible problems may be that my images would be different ratios (square / panoramic etc). Hope this makes sense?
Any help would be much appreciates, although I feel I'm at a point way beyond my skill level and may have to outsource.
