Leopard 10.5.2 update causing startup freeze

Has anyone else experienced the update to 10.5.2 appearing at shut down, then processing without a status bar progressing?
Seemed strange so I aborted this by holding down the power button... I think I may have damaged my mac... !
now I cannot start up my mac past the grey apple and spinning clock icon.
Is there a remedy without reinstalling please? (no discs to do so)
(I have already tried PRAM and disk repair)

You need to boot via the Leopard DVD and in the Utilities folder run DU and do a disk check and permissions verify/repair
now I cannot start up my mac past the grey apple and spinning clock icon.
That's what happens after an aborted install.

No disks? You always need the DVD. Without it you are lost.

What did you use for the disk repair?

  • Leopard 10.5.7 update caused Mac name change and web browser errors

Since updating to Leopard 10.5.7 through System Preferences > Software Update, my iMac has been renamed "Evan's iMac (2)" as if a new computer with the same name was duplicated. I've also noticed significant crashes and performance issues in Firefox 3 and Safari 4 beta. The only thing that's changed to my iMac is this OSX update.

Go to System Preferences > Sharing. Change the name back to what you want it.
For the browsers, try resetting Safari, for FF > Tools >Clear Private Data.

  • Leopard 10.5.2 Update cause Photoshop to crash computer

I've had this happen to my at least 3x on my Intel MacBook Pro. I'll be working, not really sure what I did to cause it happen, and suddenly photoshop freezes, everything freezes. I am able to move my mouse, but that's it. I am then forced to restart the computer and loose all my unsaved changes.
It acts as if it is contemplating what to do next, i.e. I just duplicated a layer and it spins, then it just freezes.

make a new user account and see if Photoshop behaves like the old user account.

  • 10.6.6 Update Causes Partial Freezing

I performed the 10.6.6 update on my Mac Pro (early 2008) and it went through the installation process and the computer shut down. When it tried to start back up again, it froze on a blue screen with a spinning "loading" icon. It was stuck there for 2 days, mostly because I was away from my Mac for an extended period of time. Finally I did a hard shut down and booted the computer up again. After a few minutes it went back to the same blue screen and spinning icon. After a few minutes it rebooted again and this time booted to my desktop.
Now at this point, the computer wasn't frozen. I could move my mouse. I could see the time incrementing, iChat powered on (I have it set to open on boot). The computer was running. But my Mac wouldn't respond to any key presses or mouse clicks. I could only move the cursor, nothing else. When I pressed and held down the power button to force it to shut down, the Mac Pro went immediately to sleep. After a few unsuccessful shut down attempts I pulled the plug out from the back of the unit and did a cold boot. Alas, it continued to show the same behavior where the only input I could do was mouse movement. After a few cold boots, I tried a safe boot.
The safe boot seemed to take forever to load, and when it did I was presented with my login screen. I, again, could only move my mouse. I couldn't click any buttons. I couldn't type in my password. Nothing. Finally frustrated, I left the Mac alone for about two minutes to search for answers on my iPhone. During the process, my Mac all of a sudden just booted up. Everything's back to normal. I'm typing this message with my keyboard and my mouse was able to open up my browser.
I don't know what gives. I don't know why the problem just solved itself. But this is the second update (10.6.5 presented me with the exact same issues) after which my Mac is left in a partially frozen state. I feel like a paralyzed person-only able to perceive the digital world, not interact with it. Anyone know what to call these symptoms? If there's not already a term, I'd like to call it a "soft freeze" or "paralyzed boot". Anyway, any help on the matter for future use would be greatly appreciated. Or tips on how to prevent the matter all together.

Restore your bootable backup/clone or Time Machine backup of your previous 10.6.5 installation. Alternatively, reinstall the OS, and see if that fixes the problem. If so, make a bootable backup/clone or Time Machine backup of it and try another update to 10.6.5 or 10.6.6.

  • New apple tv update causes screen freeze and lock up

ever since i updated my apple tv to the new update, after X number of minutes, the screen will freeze. if i am listening to music, the music will keep playing but the screen is frozen. it doesn't matter if it is on screen saver or not, everything freezes and is non-responsive, but music is still playing. any ideas?
    thanks

I have the exact same issue. The screen will "freeze" but audio will still play. If you hit buttons on the remote you can hear that the interface is still working, but the screen is always frozen on whatever it was showing when the problem arose, making it unusable. It doesn't matter if I'm playing audio, video, or literally doing nothing but letting the menu sit there and the default screen saver kicks in: it will eventually freeze the picture on the screen and become unusable.
It has nothing to do with syncing vs. streaming, type of content, resolution, or connection type. I've tried changing all of that and the problem always occurs.
This basically means my Apple TV is unusable, but it was bought years ago so it's out of warranty. I like the product fine, but I obviously can't use an unusable product and I don't like it enough to buy a whole new one. Anyone?

  • Leopard 10.5.5 update causes problem with PDF creation

Mac Pro 2X Quad-Core Intel Xeon 3 GHz, updated to 10.5.5. using the combo updater.
PDFs created from Illustrator CS3 (13.0.2) using print to Adobe PDF 8.0. Page size is correct, but the image is only half the size. When I boot to a backup system 10.5.4 disk, the same file is created correctly. Good thing I made a backup before updating! Anyone else have this problem?

    Hi everyone,
We at Adobe are working to understand the change and work with Apple to find a solution. In the meantime, I've published a KB article here: http://www.adobe.com/go/kb406381
I've tested to 15+ printers so far, and the only ones that showed a problem are the Adobe PDF Printer and an HP 1320, and only when printing from InDesign CS3 or Illustrator CS3.
I would help if you can post more details if
    * You have a 10.5.5 printing problem from something other than AI/ID CS3
    * You have had success/failures with workarounds in the KB doc
    * You have had the problem to a physical printer (include details of the printer)
    Thank you!

  • 10.6.5 Update Killed Preview App, Causes Occasional Freeze

The update to 10.6.5 has caused havoc on my Mac Mini. It became unresponsive during the update, and has frozen on a couple of other occasions. More importantly, it nuked the Preview app. It is no longer on my machine. When I click an image or PDF, there's a flash, but nothing opens. I ran the installation disk to check for disk damage and permission problems, but everything checked out. I then downloaded and reinstalled the 10.6.5, hoping it would bring back Preview, but no luck. After researching the problem on the net, I also tried deleting a few files from the library -> preferences folder. No luck.
I found a couple of people on CNET post that they are having the same kind of problem: http://forums.cnet.com/7723-6126_102-505971.html
I called Apple and the tech support guy's only solution was to wipe the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. He offered to escalate the problem to another tech guy, but they were closed for the night.
Does anyone have any solutions to this problem? I am positive the update caused this problem, and hope Apple issues a software fix.
    Message was edited by: BigFish2011

...is Preview actually in your applications folder but just won't launch, or are you saying it doesn't exist at all?
Tech support guy isn't quite right, you could run an 'archive and install' from the 10.6 disk, which would leave your personal data in place...you'd just have to run updates again afterward, because it'd take you back to 10.6.
If you re-ran the combo update, the archive/install's probably your only bet...I'm not sure if Preview is one of the bundled applications under the optional installs on the 10.6 disk. Also not sure if you could just copy it from the applications folder of someone else's machine.

  • X200s Wireless Randomly Turning off Causing System Freeze

    Hi,
I've run into a problem recently with my 2009 x200s running Windows 7 Home edition.
Over the last day I noticed that after doing between 5-10 minutes of wireless web browsing, the system freezes.  The exact moment this happens, I also notice that the wireless indicator just below the LCD goes from active to inactive.  Further, while no amount of key-pressing does anything, including ctrl-alt-del, I can, amazingly, turn on/off the thinkpad lcd nightlight!  The only way to recover from this is to press down on the power button for 5 seconds and reboot.
Then, 5-10 minutes later, the random freeze repeats.  That is, with the wireless indicator light doing from green to dark.
By the third time this occured, I got a hint. I checked the event logs for anything unusual.  Nothing.
I'm running a current version of Avast! antivirus and ran a Malwarebytes scan, again, nothing!
I'm at my wit's end.  Any ideas from Lenovo gurus?
    Help!
    Best,
    Dave

    Ok, an update.
The freezing occurred while working in the library.  That hadn't been a problem previously.  So, why today?
I went home and tried it again.  Everything seemed to work fine.
So, I guess my question now is this: Why would my x200s wireless connection stop working in a public access point causing a freeze in Win7 while working just fine at home??
    Odd....

  • ITunes 11.4 update cause issue with AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext

Along with many others iMac users, the iTunes 11.4 update cause a window that informs that the system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used.

Am on Snow Leopard and downloaded and installed the update to ITUNES yesterday - Itunes itself installed okay - but I did get the same system extension cannot be used.
I don't have any ethernet devices - so I checked the System/Library folder and the date on the file Is July 13, 2009.
My IPOD (probably now classic because of age) synced okay through USB port, and everything is working fine.    As the update was to allow more devices to sync with ITUNES it may be the error message is not correct one.
Seriously - Apple needs to get out of Silicon valley - the message if correct is for techies - not for users who just want the software to update without problems.    Lately Apple is preaching to their own choir.
I did send feedback through Itunes to Apple - -- If you are experiencing crashes after this update make sure you send the crash report to apple explaining that it is happening after this install  -- also call or schedule a call with apple support --

i have a 2008 imac with snow leopard.  i installed update 10.9.3 not realizing it's best for Maverick's users.  Now my Itunes 11.2.2 won't burn playlists to CD.   Anyone else with this problem?  CAn I uninstall the 10.9.3 update?  Also my HP scannerwill not save the displayed scanned document since this update!  it just saves gray.

If you have your old system backed up then erase the drive and restore your backup. If you don't have a backup then backup your entire Home folder. Erase the drive and install Snow Leopard after which you can restore your Home folder from the backup.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    Or you can:
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).

  • Windows 7 Update caused sound glitch

    Hello
I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on a Dell Inspiron 1545.
I recently encountered an issue with my computer where there was some sort of memory leak that was causing constant freeze ups. Also, the sound on on any sort of media (iTunes, Netflix, youtube, etc.) would glitch every 30 seconds or so. By that I mean it
would sound as if the computer was lagging, but it was not always happening at the same times the computer freezing was.
After some research I determined that a Dell wireless driver was causing the memory leak, so I uninstalled it and the computer was no longer freezing up. However, the sound issue was still occuring. After a few days of great frustration, I decided to just
reformat my computer. The sound was working fine after the reformat, but then I installed all of the Windows updates and it is glitchy again.
I'm not sure what update did it as there were so many, but I uninstalled the service pack 1, but it didnt change anything, so I reinstalled it.
I have determined that it is a software issue and not hardware as if I plug headphones in I still get the glitch and when I did a Linux live boot, the sound worked fine.
I have run these tools, but they have found nothing:
    Windows Memory Diagnostic
    Windows performance troubleshooter
    Windows audio troubleshooter
    System File Check
    MalwareBytes, Microsoft Security Essentials, Avira
I have also installed every and any driver I can find, but nothing has changed.
I am not sure what caused the initial problem before I reinstalled Windows as I hadn't downloaded anything or installed any new programs in at least 2 weeks. I've had the laptop for over a year and had no issues with it. This may sound crazy, but on the
day of the initial memory issues, there were high levels of Aurora activity due to a large solar flare; I have heard that the electromagnetic interference can screw with technology, but that seems a little farfetched to me.
If anyone has even the slightest idea what it could be, please let me know. I have been trying to fix this for almost a month now.
    Thank you,
    Jesse Ferland

    Hi,
Regarding the issue, I would like to recommend you checking the issue in Safe Mode and let me know whether this issue occurs in Safe Mode.
Since you said this problem occurs after installing Windows Updates. I suggest you restore your machine to an earlier point then check the issue again.
Also you could contact your manufacture to check your sound card.
    Hope that helps

I assume you are on ColdFusion 10. Then you mean surely: Server Update > Updates in the ColdFusion Administrator.
If you are indeed on 10, make sure you install the Mandatory Update first. That is crucial! You can do this manually by downloading the JAR file, and running the command: java -jar <jar-file-name>.
You could solve the Java security problem by relaxing Java's security level on your machine. I am on Windows, and can lower Java security settings in the Control Panel.

  • A recent update causing macbook to become noisy

A recent software update from apple is causing my white 13 inch macbook to heat up and use the fan unnecessarily. I mean, I have no applications open and its heating up! What's going on? This only used to happen when I watched hd videos online. I can understand that. But now its occurring shortly after I start up the macbook with absolutely no applications running. Has this happened to anyone else after the latest snow leopard update?

recent update causing macbook to become noisy
Not standing on its power cord, by any chance!!??
Try resetting some of the hardware involved (PRAM~NVRAM). See this Apple KB for details, etc.:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Can't hurt to try, and apparently this has helped others recently.
If still no joy, walk that little heat source into the nearest Apple Store and ask staff there for assistance, etc.

  • Since updating firefox keeps freezing on me, how can I revert to old version?

ever since I updated to 3.6.10 firefox keeps freezing on me. Various things will freeze like pop ups on my message board will cause a freeze, or drop down menus on a page will freeze, or just about anything. It's making me miserable so I'd really like to go back to the old version. Everything was fine then. How can I do that.

Same thing was happening to me. I believe it was version 3.6.12 that is causing these problems. I went to oldapps.com and downloaded Firefox 3.5 and it got rid of the problem.
