Leopard 10.5.2 update problems

I'm using a MacBook Pro with a Cinema 23" display. This is my startup procedure:
After booting I close the lid to make it go to sleep, then I hit a key on the keyboard to wake it up, then I type my password, and the last thing I do is to open up the lid again so it can breathe. This way the Cinema 23" is the only active display. And it has worked fine up until yesterday's last big OS X update including the graphic update.
Now, after I type in my password after the wake up the display just stays black and it is impossible to wake it up no matter what I do. The only way to make contact with the Mac again is to force a shutdown and reboot. Anyone else who experience this?

That's a good scenario, I bet no one ever beta tested to verify.

  • Leopard 10.5.1 Update Problem

I am running 10.5 on a MacBook Pro and when I try to install the 10.5.1 update (either through the software update or by downloading the update) I get the same result: In the blue screen after it says "writing files" it then says "The Installer could not install some files in "/". Contact the software manufacturer for assistance. After this it reboots into Leopard. I have tried different times and with different methods and every time it is the same. I am unable to update to 10.5.1.

Try using "Disk Utility" to fix the permissions on the boot drive (some "cannot be fixed" errors may occur...ignore them). Then check the drive for errors (verify). If there are errors, boot off the Leopard DVD, select the language, and in the next screen select "Disk Utility" from the "Utilities" menu. Select the hard drive and repair it. When that's done, quit the installer and boot back into the main drive. That should hopefully get things in a state where updates can be properly applied. Try the update again when you've logged in.

i have a 2008 imac with snow leopard.  i installed update 10.9.3 not realizing it's best for Maverick's users.  Now my Itunes 11.2.2 won't burn playlists to CD.   Anyone else with this problem?  CAn I uninstall the 10.9.3 update?  Also my HP scannerwill not save the displayed scanned document since this update!  it just saves gray.

If you have your old system backed up then erase the drive and restore your backup. If you don't have a backup then backup your entire Home folder. Erase the drive and install Snow Leopard after which you can restore your Home folder from the backup.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    Or you can:
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).

  • Problems with Leopard Graphics 1.0 update!!!!

hi ppl..i've instal the Leopard Graphics 1.0 update... and i have problems with it!
my dock is very slow, the finder crashes...what do i do??
    please some help!!

It is strange indeed. So many people have these same issues and yet not a single word from Apple. Something is really wrong with this Leopard Graphics Update 1.0
People are reporting all kinds of problems, but mostly we see these slow-downs... even typing does not respond as it should. There was a huge delay in between typing and characters appearing on the screen. Moving your windows on the desktop also gets jumpy and not smooth as it was before. Crazy things were happening while I had it installed.
So I reinstalled my Leopard completely (since you can't uninstall these updates like on Windows) and reinstalled it from the scratch. Did all updates except this Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 and all problems went away. Same situation on my work machine (new aluminum iMac, 20", 2 Gb RAM).
My advice is - do not download this update, simply ignore it and your machine will work perfectly fine. Until Apple addresses this issue I am staying away from it...

  • 10.5.7 update problems

After installing the 10.5.7 update, Mail, iTunes and iPhoto will not run anymore. Anyone else having this problem?

    jjtopspin wrote:
Before I came to these apple discussions re: update problems with 10.5.7, I tried to update this version yesterday and at the end of the download this message came up, the update "Mac OS X update" can't be saved. The digital signature for this package is incorrect. The package may have been tampered with or corrupted since being signed to Apple.
I got the same message. The downloaded file that generated the message was only about 560 KB, indicating it was an incomplete download. I moved it to the trash & tried again. The second download attempt succeeded. I had a minor if nerve-wracking issue with the update (the blue looping screen reported in another topic in this forum) but after a forced shutdown & restart the update was completed successfully.
I have since updated my two other Macs so all those listed in my profile are now running 10.5.7. All do so without any problems & in fact work better & more stably than ever before.
I doubt that I'm unusual in this respect. Some users will have problems but I believe most won't, & for those that do most problems will turn out to be caused by something other than the update itself. So it has been for every previous Leopard update; I see no reason to think this one will be any different.

  • Fresh snow leopard install and still same problem. Please help :(

    hello.
    After 10.6.3 update....
I had issues with trackpad and keyboard freezing on my early 2008 macbook pro.
I have tried to reset pram, nvram, smc, onyx maintance everything i could think of.
So i decided to wipe hard drive clean and do fresh install. Everything was working fine until i applied 10.6.3 update.
Is there any fix for this yet ?
It still doesnt work good even with fresh install of snow leopard and 10.6.3 update.
    Thank you

I've read a lot on the Internet about alien UFO crashes too, but that doesn't mean it is a good idea to take them at face value.
If something doesnt work after clean install then thats updates issue.
Not necessarily, at least if you mean the OS update itself. Do a little research. This same argument pops up after every OS update. There are no exceptions -- every one of them has been blamed for all manner of post-update problem, linked to each of several different models, & everything else you have read on the Internet about this one. Users also frequently use the "clean install" argument in support of these theories that the update, whichever one it happens to be, is the only possible culprit.
The problem is these theories rarely prove to have any merit at all, & like with most such things, even when there is some merit to them, the complete explanation is more complicated. For instance, some users do a perfectly executed clean install & then ruin it by reintroducing the same bit of software that was the real problem in the first place. Some users don't know what a clean install is & mistakenly say they did one. Some eventually find & eliminate a different cause for their particular problems but never report that. Sometimes coincidence is involved -- with millions of users upgrading the chances that in some cases it is not are slim to none.
Basically, it is like anything else on the Internet. You can find something to support anything imaginable because people can imagine anything & too many of them ignore anything that doesn't support that or just don't make the effort to look for it in the first place.

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.5 graphic problem

    Hello!
Having known about some problems/bugs with video, I tried my luck and update my system up to 10.6.5. So, here you are some conclusions about it:
1 The animation of docks became more smooth, but Expose and Dashbord (~20 widgets ) began lagging much more (if we compare it with 10.6.4).
2 Stacks with 10 or more elements are choppy (they were choppy and they remain choppy, unfortunately). About fps.
3 I know that many people have huge problems with fps )))))
I usually play WoW, Starcraft 2 and I haven't noted much reducing of fps. It's OK here.
The time-machine's interface is more choppy(fuzzy), but doesn't differ from 10.5.4 too much.
4 So! The most interesting part of my report is about Skype. I use it for connection with my colleagues and family. For these reasons i've bought Nokia BH-104 bluetooth headset (I've read that it works excellent with MACs). Yes, MAC recognizes it very well and doesn't disconnect it without my wish. That's really nice! BUT, my friends!!! How should I use skype and continue working with my MAC? Animation becomes awful and all unbearable lags! Expose, dashboard, the window's minimizing effect into docs or just simple window's dragging causes huge lags. When I switch my headset off or stop talking over Skype lags dissapear.
How much «cats» (I mean Leopard OS) might be updated before solving all these problems? I'm (and I think that not only me) tired to wait. If someone has any experience of solving these problems, write me, please! I'll be very grateful.
Now I have a question to the Apple's developers! When these problems will be solved? Are you going to solve it in Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion"? Hope, yes.
    Best regards!
p.s. Please don't tell me that my mac causes these problems. It's not true. Many friends of mine have
the same and similar problems , but macs are different
Upd: If I run some effects in a sequence of 6-8 times, for the example, Expose, it begins smooth (not for all time). From my point of view, Expose must be smooth, but not so smooth as I and hundreds of thousands of users see it.

JUst a note; you are not talking to Apple employees on this forum - it is user to user. If you wish to get your message accross to Apple, use the feedback form; http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

I have a canon multifunction printer that used to work with snow leopard but since I updated to mountain lion it stoped working. How do I make it work again?

This problem is not unheard of when upgrading from Snow Leopard. It is usually solved by completely deleting the existing printer in System Preferences > Print & Scan, and adding it again.

  • Leopard -Firewire -camcorder-  G-5  PROBLEMS

This is rather a lengthy post so get a cup of coffee & pull up a chair.
I have a year old G-5 Tower with dual core processors 2 gigs of ram & 2- 250 hard drives ordered from Apple.
It all started after I loaded Leopard, everything was fine till I tried to use I Movie HD 6.0.3 with a Camcorder. A Cannon ZR 850 camcorder I bought new last summer.
When I plugged in my Camcorder to Firewire 400 front port, it could not read the camcorder. Tried rear port same thing. Then my two external 400 & 800 drives would unmount when I plugged in the camera.
I then plugged in the camera without I Movie HD, went to the system profiler and clicked on firewire devices and got a red error message saying no fire wire detected!
I tried several times to get the camera to read, It actually read once, but then after that my firewire ports would not read ANY FIR WIRE 800/400 Device of any kind. It would read the drives connected USB!
Called Apple they said reinstall leopard with an archived install. Did that, still nothing.
Called a tech in and he tried to boot from an external drive and would not read on restart with option, in profiler anywhere. Ran tech disc aid and said again error no firewire devices.
called Apple back and they said I needed a new logic board, as the reinstall of Leopard would have fixed it if it was a software issue.
Under warranty they replaced the logic board and front Firewire port module.
After that it still wont read any drives! no firewire detection!
The tech suggests re-installing Tiger (archived install) as he thinks it's a Leopard issue.
Re installed original Tiger OS 10, as an archived install- Everything works, reads all fire wire devices including camcorders. Everything seems to work fine, but will not access old Leopard Users/ files-
I need to use all my previous User files so I had to tried a clean install of Leopard on G-5
DID CLEAN INSTALL OF LEOPARD on G-5 & did all updates– Now Reads fire wire 800 & 400 drives, both front & back ports, but still not a camcorder- When camcorder plugged in, other drives dismount- system profiler says- error no fire wire devices located, unplug camcorder, run profiler again and the drives re-mount and show up in profiler with no error message.
Also in profiler shows a unknown firewire device on front port with nothing plugged in firewire ports?
Tried Panasonic 3CCD camcorder on G-5 computer - could not read
Used a backup Drive, loading Leopard only, without any updates to bypass Users/G-5 Hard drive, to boot up, from the G-5 FIRE WIRE 400 port.
Tried camera- would not read again.
I Movie HD can't find any camera connected and freezes up. Wont force quite, need to restart.
Thought I would try I life 08 on the external drive to see if it could help
Loaded I Life 08 on boot up backup test drive
I movie 08 crashes and will not open- error message reads
Termination App due to uncaught Exception
    Creating more than one application
Performed all updates on external drive for both Leopard & I life 08-
I Movie 08 then recognized Panasonic camera, but program freezes up when trying to download any clips. Force quit will not work , need to restart computer. Tried Camera again, reads Panasonic, then tried a Cannon ZR850 Camcorder- wont recognize it. Tried Panasonic and now I Movie 08 & computer will not recognize either camcorders, Still recognizes & mounts external drives both 400 & 800 firewire ports
Tried HD I Movie but the program froze up and force quit would not work. On restart of back up drive, computer froze up twice during restart and needed to be manually re-started during start up, giving the error message-
Panic Dart Entry Exception Hyper Transport
Kernel error Mac OS Version Not set
Sent ACCD file (Capture Data application) to Apple tech- will call after reviewing
Apple has no clue yet as to what is going on. They are looking at it from the file I sent
    Sorry for the lengthy post

No help ... sorry. But I have a Dual 2.3 GHz G5 with Leopard that won't find either of my dv cameras either (both iMovie 6 and FCE 4). I get the same red firewire warning but so far no other problems.
I am going to try in on a couple of Tiger machines later...

  • Software Update problems and update problems

Hi eveyone. I recently bought a used macbook with windows installed and decided to install leopard. unfortunatly there are some problems. 1st: Software update does not work, when I run it it says that it couldnt connect to the server. I've tried multple times but always the same. So then I try going to the apple downloads section and getting the 10.5.3 and security updates there. When i start the 10.5.3 update there is a message saying that it could not be installed on the volume: this happens with all the versions from 10.5.1 to 10.5.3. Can someone please help? I never had any problems with tiger updating either way.

What are you using to try to install Leopard? AFAIK, you need a retail Leopard install set.

  • If I upgrade to Leopard, will it resolve the problems with my iMac?

I have one of the first intel-based iMacs that came out. I bought it in January of 2006. Is it having problems because there may be bugs in it?...since it is one of the first intel-based iMacs. Some problems that I have are: Safari freezes like crazy, iTunes freezes occasionally, Mail will sometimes shut down for no reason, iPhoto freezes, and sometimes the overall performance of the computer is slower than what it should be. I have plenty of hard drive space available, so I don't think that's the issue.
If I upgrade to Leopard will this resolve these problems? Or will it just slow my computer down even more? If that won't solve the problem, what else can I do to speed my computer up, and stop things from freezing?

Upgrading to Leopard in itself will not fix your system problems. However the act of doing a clean or Archive install of the system whether it be 10.4 or 10.5 could very well resolve your issues. So it's not necessarily the fact that you are upgrading rather doing a clean install. My recommendation would be to try and figure out your issues first then decide whether you want to upgrade or not.
How fast is your processor and how much RAM do you have? Have you installed all of Apple's software updates? A good starting point is to open up Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility select the hard drive on the left(the Mac OS X Volume) and click Repair Disk Permissions then Verify Disk. Repairing the Permissions is something that should be done often as regular maintenance and Verifying the Disk checks the volume directory for errors. If it finds any problems you will need to boot up the the install disk and run Disk Utility from there in order to Repair it. Afterwards Go to the Apple Menu/System Preferences/Startup Disk and make sure that the Mac OS X volume is selected as the startup system.

  • Entourage crashed after loading Snow Leopard 10.6.7 update

I installed the Snow Leopard 10.6.7 update yesterday and immediately Entourage would no longer function properly.  None of the folders (inbox, sent, drafts, etc) are visible and the options at the top of the screen do not work.  Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

I had a similar problem and solved it.
Mac book (2010) 10.6.8, Printer: Xerox Phaser 8560.
It started when I did a printer driver update.
I'd print and then it would take 1-2 minutes just to get a print dialog box. -Frustrating.
My console had some strange msgs about printer not authenticating and job not responding.
So I deleted the printer, created it again using bonjour to find it, and changed the driver from the auto-selected driver(my printer model) to Generic PostScript.
Now speed is back to immediate and it is printing fine.
I suspect the manufacturer's driver is engaing something that is not compatible with the system.
