Leopard 10.5.3 broke my FCE

I just upgraded to 10.5.3 from 10.5.2. When I start FCE, the splash screen displays and then right when I think that I am going to see the browser window, etc., FCE shuts down with any error message. Any ideas?

First of all try trashing the preferences exactly as described here:-

Then open Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions.

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.1 broke my screen sharing

I have 4 Macs in our home with screen sharing enabled. I've used that function ever since it became available and it has worked flawlessly. All screen shared machines would show in a list in finder window.
I updated my main unit - a Mac Pro - to 10.6.1 when it was released. The others remained on 10.6.0 until this morning and now I see that Screen Sharing no longer works. No devices in the list - no connection resulting in a black screen.
    Nothing.
    Anybody with help?

UPDATE: First I should have confirmed that I had done all the standard hoop jumping that Apple CS would send a body through - make sure it's plugged in, turned it on, log out, log in, repair perms, disabled all the fonts and desk accessories in the Font/DA Mover, turn off Talking Moose...all that stuff. Nothing changed.
I just restarted my router and all appears to be back.
    hehe...Kitty Fetus....
BTW: I only updated to 6.1 because I got an email that said if I did I would be entered in contest for a $10M prize from the Steve Jobs Foundation.

  • Will an upgrade from Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard make me loose programs?

I have an old 2007 Macbook pro and I need to upgrade from Tiger OS 10.4.11 to either leopard of Snow leopard because my charger broke and the new charger does not work probably in the older laptops unless you firmare update (which I cannot do as my OS is less than 10.5)
My question is: Will upgrading wipe all the files and programs from my laptop? I have programs that I no longer have the discs, to install them with, for so if they get wiped I will be unable to get them back and they are programs I need on a daily basis. I was just wondering what upgrading from tiger to leopard will actually involve? Will I loose all files/programs so it would be like starting from scratch with a new computer? Or would it not change these things?

Buy an external drive (or two).
Clone your system before you begin.
Repair the drive while at it, Apple First Aid and another 3rd party program.
Make sure you can boot from your backup clone.
Apple Restore is part of Disk Utilty or there is SuperDuper, or Carbon Copy Cloner.
Me, I would take the above precautions. Then I would format your drive with SL DVD, and perform and clean install. Do all the updates. Then use Setup or Migration Assistant.
Look for threads, there seems to be 4-5 a week at least on Migrating, going from 10.4 or from PPC to 10.6.
That is the safest. In theory, and YMMV, you could try upgrade in place, but not without backups, and repairing your drive with SL DVD first.

  • FCE 4 doesn' export - General Error

Hi, I've got a problem with FCE 4; I can't get it to export.
I've been working on a project for over three months and now that it's over, I can't export it. I've also moved the whole project from my Macbook, in which I created it, to my iMac 2.4, but nothing, and the end of the "Export in Quick Time Format" it always reads "General Error" and, of course, the video has not been created.
What does that "General Error" mean? Waht can I do in order to solve this issue?
    Thanks in advance,
    Fabrizio

I'm glad you solved your problem.
Be careful anyway about importing .psd with transparency into PAL projects. In the past (FCE 3.x) I lost some projects because of that. Now I don't dare doing it again, also because I had inconsistent behaviours with a few tests in FCE4. To be safe I import .tif or .png instead.
    About the keyboard.
Leopard has a bug that prevents FCE (and FCP) shortcuts to work correctly with non-US keyboards. 10.5.3 update did not fix it yet.
    There is a workaround.
    - Open the International panel of System Preferences
    - click the Language tab
    - drag "English" to the top of the list (on top of Italian)
    - drag back Italian to the top of the list
    - close System Preferences
    - (close if necessary and) open FCE or FCP: shortcuts should be fixed.
This seems to work till the next system startup; then you have to repeat this procedure...

  • Will FCE be compatible with mountain lion

Please don't said I have to buy FCP app..

Answering about Mountain Lion at this point would be speculation, not permitted in these forums.
You have to understand that FCE was discontinued even before Lion was released.  It is not supported on Lion.   Many users have attempted to install & run FCE on Lion and have either failed or had problems with the results.  The few that seem to have successfully used FCE on Lion basically already had FCE installed on Snow Leopard before upgrading to Lion.
FCE was EOL (end-of-life) as of June 2011.   Final Cut Pro X is the current solution.

  • Compatibility - Leopard

I have an easy question. I have been searching through the forums and I believe I know the answer, but wanted to post and find out before spending money to upgrade, since I may be forced by Apple to spend more money unnecessarily.
I just installed Leopard last night. I can capture from iMovie 04, but I cannot capture from my DV camcorder into Final Cut Express HD 3.0. I get dropped frames everytime, and the picture just becomes stuck, while the video is still playing on the camcorder. It is a major disappointment that a program that is almost 4 years old can capture, but my newer, more expensive, program, will not.
Question: Is final cut express hd 3.0 just not compatible with Leopard? I am finding this to be true, but want to be sure. Thank you for your help!

    Tom's Questions:
Did you do the update to 3.0.1? Dropped packets? Do you mean dropped frames, or something else?
It keeps telling me that I don't need the update. I am running a PowerPC Mac with an AGP graphics card. I believe that is why it keeps telling me that.
Which camcorder is this? Always use the rear FireWire port on the computer not the front one. If the capture fails go back and trash preferences and repair permissions each time.
My camcorder is a Sony DCR-TRV17. I bought it in 2001. It has worked flawlessly with my Mac (since Feb. 2004) until I did the 10.4.9 update. Then, it started giving me dropped frames. So, I backed it off to 10.4.8 to make it work again. Then, when 10.4.10 was released, it was supposed to fix the problem, but it did not for me. So, I backed it off to 10.4.8 and it worked fine, until the Leopard update a week ago or so. You suggested a erase and install of Leopard, so that is what I did. I reinstalled just Leopard and FCE HD 3.0 and no special preferences. I repaired permissions after the install. I tried to capture at this time and I still get the dropped frames error. It captures for 5-10 minutes and then I get dropped frames. I did plug it into the rear port and it is still failing with dropped frames. Not sure what else I can do at this time? Thanks Tom for your help!!!!!
    Ian,
I have been able to capture endless video until version 10.4.9, which was backed off to 10.4.8, so I could capture again. Then, 10.4.10 was supposed to fix this problem, but I still received dropped frames. So, I backed it off again, to 10.4.8, and then it worked fine until I updated to Leopard. I did a clean install of Leopard and a new install of FCE HD 3.0 without preferences loaded. I tried both the front and back firewire ports and I am still having the problem. I cannot update to 3.0.1 because I have a PowerPC Mac with an AGP video card (I believe this is why).
I hope this clears up some of the confusion I have created. Thank you both so much for your assistance!!! I really appreciate it a lot!

  • Bootcamp black screen white cursor on trying to install

I have an early-2008 imac 24inch which had WIndows 7 installed along with Snow Leopard. My iMac broke this month and was sent in for a repair and the graphics card Nvidia 8800 GS was replaced with the same again. Also, Snow Leopard was installed freshly.
When i received the iMac back it was formatted back all to one partition and only Snow Leopard was on there.
I bagan by trying to Partition my drive using Bootcamp, giving the same size as i had before (125gb). All went well and was successful. I then inserted my Windows 7 disk (the same one i used last time) and clicked "install and restart".
Upon my mac restarting it boots from the disk as expected but rather than going into the set up process... it merely hangs on a screen which is black with a white line cursor on the top left flashing.
Nothing happens atall from then on. Just that same screen.
I have tried a new install of snow leopard, ive tried to re format my hard drive and then do bootcamp from scratch again etc. Nothing seems to work. I have even burnt a new copy of my Windows 7 disk but to no avail. I would normally not care about windows being on my machine but I currently need it for my work.
I have tried to find a solution to the problem but i have come across none yet... Loads of people seem to have the problem though but no one has a way of fixing it.
I have also tried to install from different copies of windows such as XP and Vista and still no good. Along with trying to do a normal restart and boot from the CD from holding Alt and again from holding 'C'.
I dont understand how it can suddenly not work from a graphics card being replaced.
Apple have said that it is not their problem once bootcamp is involved... great...
    I would appreciate any help!
    Thanks, Justin.

Same issue here. Very similar 24" iMac, developed the issue after service under AppleCare. In my case the HDD had died, and was replaced with a new 640GB disk.
Any attempt to boot Windows installation media results in the black text-mode screen, with a single flashing cursor in the upper left.
In my case, I've tried several different installation CDs, including XP SP2, XP SP3, Vista32, Vista64, Win7 32, Win7 64. (Having a MSDN account with access to download installation CD images helps ;P ) Despite all of these successfully booting in my MBP, as well as VMWare Fusion, none will successfully boot the iMac either before or after partitioning via BootCamp.
Some others on these forums have reported success by zapping PRAM during each reboot. This has not made a difference for me.
Still others found that removing any USB devices other than keyboards/mice from the machine prior to booting got them through. This also made no difference for me.
I've also wiped the disk completely (zeroing for good measure), laid down a new partition table, reinstalled 10.6 clean, installed updates, and immediately gone into BootCamp (before restoring any apps or data). No change.
I'm at a loss as to what can be tried next. Nothing seems to make a difference.

  • Big Difference in Final Cut Express Versions????

I still own Final Cut Express 2.02 (2004) but never really was able to master it, and went back to iMovie for my editing.
Now, I'm thinking about making the jump again, but am curious how different Final Cut Express HD or Final Cut Express 4.0 is from the version that I own. (Which by the way doesn't even work on my iMac because it says I don't have a APG Graphics card).
I guess that's a long way of asking your opinion if the newer versions are better and/or any easier or more user friendly than Final Cut Express 2.0. Also curious what the learning curve is. I really struggled on the 2.0 version.

    Hello Todd,
The user interface and all of the basic functions including editing, filters, exporting are the same in the later versions of Final Cut Express.
Later versions than 2.02 added more filters & features including support for HD video (HDV & AVCHD). The one major deletion was SoundTrack was removed from the FCE package when FCE4 was released.
Beyond features, one of the main considerations is what versions of OSX and QuickTime you are running. With Leopard, you should really be on FCE 4. Since you already have v2.02 you can purchase the upgrade to FCE4 ($99) instead of another copy of the full program.
With regard to learning FCE, you should get a copy of Tom Wolsky's book Final Cut Express Editing Workshop and his tutorial DVD Final Cut Express Made Easy. They are excellent materials for learning how to use FCE quickly. The book also includes a DVD with sample clips that go with the examples in the book; and he explains the differences between iMovie and FCE, which can be very helpful for someone making that transition.

  • HDV4 in a .mov file won't play back using any software

    Issue:
I had 4 DVDs sent to me containing a bunch of .mov files that won't play back in any of the following apps:
QuickTime 7 Pro (includes Mpeg2 codec from Apple's Web site) - sends me to Apple.com's QT plugins page
Mpeg Streamclip - loads only some on batch import, but mostly displays white and plays the audio
HandBrake - Says not a valid source
VLC Player - error says that HDV4 files cannot be played
QuickTime Player - says format isn't a format that QT recognizes
I need to get this into a format usable by FCE.  I'm running the most up-to-date 10.6 Snow Leopard, and the last version of FCE.  How can I do this without losing my current version of iTunes or Final Cut Express?
    Vent:
As videographers gradually move to hard-drive based cameras, their ability to submit their footage becomes more and more difficult.  As a result, we get DVDs, flash drives, 64 GB memory sticks, and more.  It seems like each one uses a different file format, and every format is proprietary.  Where is a standards committee when you need one?  Where is the open-source format?

  • I need to find my iTunes Music folder!

I'm a Final Cut Express user, recently upgraded from Tiger to Mountain Lion and then partway back to Snow Leopard, which is working with my FCE 3.5.  Now I need access to my music,  which I manually imported from my CDs five years ago, and use for soundtracks (these are underwater videos.)
I thought I had backup - I use Carbon Copy Cloner and have bootable clones of both Tiger and Mountain Lion, which should contain the iTunes Music Folder.  But the folders I can find don't seem to contain any tracks.
Before I make the (probably correct) assumption that I somehow never did have the music backed up, I'd appreciate any ideas about where to look besides Library & Users folders.  I do still have all the CDs - probably wouldn't take more than a few weeks...
    Thanks for any ideas.
    Sharron

Well, I did find the iTunes Music folder on the Tiger clone (MBP had to be booted up from the clone to access the folder) and figured out where Snow Leopard's iTunes wanted its music imported  (the Automatically Move to iTunes folder).  Couldn't move the whole Music Folder at once, though it's only about 11GB, but I could move whole albums over in bunches & got about 1/3 of the music transferred in a couple of hours, alternating startup drives to shovel it along.
The transferred music worked OK - I converted tracks to AIFF for a FCE soundtrack, inserted them in a sequence, fiddled around with simple fades etc. Began to feel confident.  But then Snow Leopard started crashing - can't imagine it has anything to do with iTunes.
I've had about as  much of this as I can enjoy, as the fox said...
But I do appreciate your clarification of the storage habits of iTunes.

  • Back to Tiger

Like many other confirmed Macsters of many years duartion, and as a guy who maintains and uses 6 of the machines, I looked forward with great anticipation to Leopard, and on the third day after its release installed it on my 2.4Ghz MacBook Pro with 4gb of RAM. Its the latest and greatest 17" portable, and I thought everything would work fine. But I forgot my experience with Panther to Tiger several years ago.
I have just reinstalled my clone backup, and will be using Tiger again for several months. Some of the problems I have encountered are outside vednor software related, some are Apple foibles. But the system just doesn't work yet.
I thought it would be helpful to list my issues:
    1. .Mac, iDisk and iSync are a mess. The info settings on IDisk are all off, and it won't sync properly. Apple is aware of the problem, and will fix it I'm certain. But good grief! This is their software through and through. I would have expected them to sort it out before it got to my machine as general release purchased software.
    2. I use Quickbooks for Mac for all my finances, and have always loved the ability to backup files to .Mac. Because of #1, its a dead duck. Probably an Apple problem, but the net is that it won't work.
    3. I use Adobe for all my photography and document management. Lightroom won't print, and doesn't import normally. Acrobat won't juggle. Again, this is an Adobe issue which should be fixed in the near term, but good grief! Didn't they get the developer's beta to sort this out? Or did Apple not give them access to the true final version?
    4. Intermittently I cannot shut down without using the power button. The warning says that the finder stopped the shutdown because an application, Finder, was still running (it isn't). A pure Apple issue.
    5. My Data Backup 3 and Drive Genius don't work. These are Prosoft Engineering's products, and I am confident they will get working. But I like clone backups, they just work. Would have thought they could have sorted it out.
    6. Version Tracker Pro, my remote firewall client for many years is a dead duck in Leopard. I can no longer get into my network from outside.
    7. Although I have looked forward like everyone else to Leopard, and I look forward still to using it, I need stability and workability in my software, and Leopard isn't the place for it yet.
So, Apple and your software vendors, Get to work! There are a bunch of us out here who want to be your evangelists! But get your products to work as well as they always have.....

We got retail copies of Leopard before developers were shipped theirs. And they were still looking at something from over a month ago, not the latest candidate build(s).
Can you say, "Caught off guard?"
Drivers and code that worked were now 'broken.' Work and testing? have to re-evaluate. Time to figure out why? often 2-4 weeks to look at code changes etc. AND that is from vendors working closely with Apple on drivers.
Some devices needed new firmware. In some cases users weren't using the latest firmware or didn't realize (and if it ain't broke, don't fix it).
All of my disk drives are managed by 3rd party driver from SoftRAID.com which was tested and certified for Leopard months ago. Broke. And probably will be an issue until 10.5.0 is updated (and I'd love to see 10.5.x on DVD or "slipstream" somehow.

  • NFS mount

I have trouble mounting nfs-exported disks on my ubuntu server.
    I don't think it's the servers configuration:
    (part of /etc/exports)
    /dsk/mp3 10.42.42.*(rw,sync,insecure)
and my mount command on the apple should be ok as well:
    sudo mount_nfs black:/dsk/mp3 /nfs_photo
The respons on the command are:
    mount_nfs: /nfs_photo: Operation not permitted.
As far as I can see there are no ownership issues or such stuff.
My popcorn hour mounts the same just fine
Any one have any clue? I am new on mac but quite old on Linux systems so I do know my way around nfs usally.

I am having this exact same problem. Everything worked fine in Leopard, but when I upgraded to Snow Leopard, my NFS mount broke.
I'm running a Linux Ubuntu server with 500 GB of space, and I'm exporting /data/Music as read-only to my 192.168.1.255 subnet.
I mount nfs://192.168.1.2:/data/Music to /Users/Shared/Music (read-only). I then link /Users/Shared/Music to all user's desktops (ln -s /Users/Shared/Music ~/Desktop/Music). That works fine. And, I can browse ~/Desktop/Music in a terminal window with no problems. But when I try to click the "Music" icon on my desktop, it fails with the same error message: "The Folder 'Music' cannot be opened because you don't have permission to see the contents."
If you've figured this out, could you please post what you did to get it working?

  • Upgrade advice (8core to be or not to be)

Will a new 8-core Mac Pro with 6GB RAM / Leopard / Logic 8 Studio with 3 internal drives ((1) boot & apps (2) scratch (3) samples) be a major quality of life upgrade for me?
I do film and commercial music, generally pretty time sensitive and mission critical, which is why I'm waiting for a real sign. i've taken to doing most on my laptop (specs below), but I definitely need to edit and mix on a more powerful machine... sudden quits galore.
I generally start sketches in GB and then edit and mix in Logic Pro 7.
I am amazed at how quickly I get error messages and hiccups with > 8 instrument tracks and > 2 audio tracks. I rely on GB, Philharmonik, Wallander and Synful instruments. I rarely use any FX plugs other than the standard reverb and echo that default with any GB project.
Thoughts, especially from any proud Mac Pro / Leopard owners appreciated.

    You broke it, so no.
You could send it here though...

  • FCE file won't open after upgrading to Leopard

After upgrading a Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 from OS 10.4.x Tiger to OS 10.5.8 Leopard, a Final Cut Express file on an external HD will no longer open. The error message is “File Error: Access Denied.”
Other files on the external drive using other applications launch with no problem.
The FCE file opens OK on another Mac running OS 10.6.
    Any suggestions?

Different OSes handle it differently, besides the normally hidden UIDs.
I wonder if ACLs got enabled on those other drives?

    No.
