Leopard 10.5.4 and Appleworks Starting Points

I am a teacher and love using Appleworks 6.2.9 Starting Points Calendars but with my new Imac/Intel I can't seem to get it to work. I keep getting that file cannot be converted to an Appleworks document. Can anyone give me information as to how to get this to work?

"I open AW, then go to File and plug down to Show Starting Points, click on it. Briefly I see the Starting Points box show up on the screen, then the screen shows up saying that file cannot be opened and do I want to report the problem to Apple. AW always quits at that point.
This is a far different statement from your original "I can't seem to get it [AppleWorks 6.2.9 Starting Points Calendar] to work. I keep getting that file cannot be converted to an Appleworks document."
If AppleWorks quits with a File cannot be opened" message while trying to open the Starting Points windows, that would indicate a problem with one of the files or folders in Starting Points. see below for some trouble-shooting steps.
I have tried to start up Calendar Asst from the hard drive list and it bounces me out and says cannot open file, do I want to report the problem to Apple. The error message is the same whether opening it from AW or the hard drive. "
This is normal behaviour. As I said earlier, the Assistants cannot be opened from the Finder, only from within AppleWorks. Trying to open an Assistant from the finder will result in the "cannot be converted" message you mentioned earlier. In AW 6, that means only from within Starting Points. (In the previous version Assistants and Templates were a menu item in the File menu.)
Trouble-shooting steps:
Qujit AppleWorks before each of these steps. At the end of each step, launch AppleWorks. If AW launches successfully, it indicates the problem lies within one of the folders/files removed during the step just finished; Go to "Successful launch?" If AppleWorks Quits with the same error message as before, continue with the next numbered step.
1
I would start with a maintenance step: Trash the contents of AppleWorks's Recent Items folder(s).
Go to Mac HD > Users > yourname > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent Items. Drag all or most of the items in this folder to the Trash. (The items are aliases to the named files. Deleting them has no effect on the files themselves.) Close the Recent Items folder.
Create a New Folder on the Desktop. Name it AWUD, and drag all of the folders in AppleWorks User Data into the new AWUD folder.
2.
Create a New Folder, SP, on the Desktop. Go to Applications > AppleWorks 6 > Starting Points
Drag the first two folders (Assistants and Backgrounds) into the new SD folder.
3.
Drag the next two folders from Starting Points into SP.
4.
Repeat step 3 until all Starting Points folders have been moved into SP.
Successful launch?
Quit AppleWorks. Return the folders you moved in PREVIOUS steps to their original folders. Leave the items you moved in the most recent step in the folder where you put them. Launch AppleWorks.
A successful launch confirms the problem lies in one of the folders you removed in the most recent step.
Quit AppleWorks. Return one of the folders to its original folder. Launch AppleWorks. Repeat with the remaining folder(s) until AppleWorks quits as before.
Once you have located the folder containing the problem file, do a similar search of the files in that folder. Open the folder, drag half of the files it contains into one of the (now empty) new folders you created, then re launch AppleWorks. Put half the removed files back and launch again. Repeat until you locate the single file causing trouble.
If it's one that you do not use, trash it. If you do want to continue using it, it will probably be necessary to re-install AppleWorks from your original disks.

Barry

  • Is it possible to display a waveform with fixed length and fixed starting point?

    Hi,
I am using DAQ assitant to acquire voltage and current measurment of my device. The voltage is a pure sine wave and current is a periodic waveform with phase difference and distortion. I use waveform chart to display the waveform of voltage and current waveform in seperate charts and they work fine. But the waveforms look like moving to the right all the time, in another way ,the phase is always shifting. Now i want to display the waveforms of both with fixed length (say 2 cycle) and also in a same chart. Apart from that, i also want to display the voltage waveform starting form 0 degree (a fixed point )rather than moving all the time. In this case, i can observe the angle difference between voltage and current. Is there any method to achieve this purpose?
    Many Thanks,
    Hao

    Hao,
first of all, you are using a chart which has three options for updates if the chart is "full":
    Strip chart (default)
    Scope chart
    Sweep chart
These are called "update mode". Test the modes yourself.
Also you have to know that you will not likely have an integer number of periods of your signal in the display of the chart. Therefore, a continuous signal will "move" the graph from update to update.
You can implement some algorithm to discard data to maintain a static "trigger" level for display, but as stated, it will leave gaps in the signal. These gaps are not a concern unless you use the displayed signal for analysis (e.g. FFT).

  • Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and Appleworks 6.2.9

Until yesterday, I had only upgraded my laptop to 10.6.3. Unfortunately, I didn't think to CHECK how AppleWorks behaved after I did that
Yesterday I loaded Snow Leopard (10.6.3) onto my wife's iMac and my MacPro. It was after that that she noticed a nasty problem: Every time she opened a formatted AppleWorks document and then performed a Page Setup the left and right margins were set to 0. I did the same test with a number of different AppleWorks documents on my MacBook Pro and MacPro and the same thing happens EVERY time: The left and right margins are set to zero.
I have cleaned out all the AppleWorks preferences files and folders but the problem persists.
Yes, we are migrating everything to Pages but that takes time. In the mean time I need a solution to this problem. (No, I cannot find the original AppleWorks discs, only the 6.2.9 upgrade.) Any ideas?
    Thanks.

This appears to be an incompatibility between AppleWorks & Snow Leopard & is never likely to be fixed. AppleWorks was last updated in January, 2004, & was declared end-of-life (i.e. no further updates or official support) in August, 2007.
Your options, as I see them, are to revert to an earlier version of OS X when you want to use AppleWorks or move your files to newer programs. I rarely use AppleWorks any more, but I do keep a Mac capable of running Tiger & Classic & of running Leopard for programs I occasionally need that do not work in a newer version.

  • New to mac and iweb, starting point?

hi good people, never created a website before so does someone have a list of things to do and in what order etc, its a business site i will create, i have a domain but no host yet, its best to avoid mm by all accounts. As i am in the UK so is there a good host with good support that people recommend? My domain is with Daily who seem good but i don't really no. should i have a linux package?
I purchased a couple of ebooks, iwebfaq & iweb4business but at this stage they seem a bit daunting and they seem to go very deep into tech jargon before explaining the basics and where to start, but no doubt they will prove to be very reference in good time.
Now whats the first things to do.
Anyone got a checklist or something similar?

  • Set starting point for x y position

I've never used a program as frustrating as Flash CS4. How
can I change the location of the X and Y starting point? I have
some that are bottom left, some are near the center, others top
    left. It's very annoying.

Francois - Thanks! Looks like set/get_view_property() is exactly what I need. I was hung up on set_canvas_property(), especially since my trigger was compiling with x_pos as a valid property. I completely forgot about set/get_view_property.
Frank - I am using (small) stacked canvases to represent objects that the end users will be able to reposition. The new x,y coordinates will be saved in a database table, and the form will retrieve/apply these coordinates at runtime. Yes, I have accounted for the potential overlapping canvas issue.
...Still puzzled why get_canvas_property() compiles with x_pos as a property... but it doesn't matter.

  • Problems with "Background Eraser Tool" and "Blur". The tools don't affect the whole area but just connect the start and the last points.

    Hello!
I have some issues with Photoshop CC 2014. The tools "Background Eraser Tool" and "Blur" won't work correctly. When I’m holding down the left mouse button and trying to erase or blur some area, the tools don’t affect the whole area but just connect the start and the last points – like drawing a line. These troubles exist with mentioned tools only, other tools work correctly.
I’ve restored each tool separately, restored all the tools together, installed new drivers for tablet, re-installed Photoshop and even Windows. Nothing helped. These tools worked correctly earlier with the same adjustments, but one day something went wrong.
How can I make the tools work correctly?
    Some information about my computer:
    • Notebook Lenovo Y560
    • Windows 7 Home Basic SP1 x64
    • Intel Core i5 2.53 GHz
    • 4Gb RAM
    • ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 1Gb
    • Tablet Wacom Bamboo CTL-470

    Hi,
I have a similar problem with the Background Eraser tool as well. It's the same both on my PC and on my laptop, both running Win 8.1 and PS CC2014. Would be great to have a solution for this. Did you managed to find a fix?

I just recently up graded from AI CS6 to AI CC and I am having issues with my pen tool. If I create a starting point and then make another point it does not allow me to make the second point an end point. The pen tool stays active and I either have to click to isolate the path or I have to return to the first point and close the path. Please help.

    artisttouch,
If you cannot close the Pen Tool by switching to another tool, as a temporary measure you may try pressing P (for Pen).
To solve it, you may try the list.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save curent artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • I recently upgraded to Lion, and immediately started having consistent problems with Open Office 12 (would hang, and need a Force quit to recover). Has anybody else seen these problems? Any solutions other than going back to Snow Leopard? (I did).

I recently upgraded to Lion, and immediately started having consistent problems with Open Office 12 (would hang, and need a Force quit to recover). Has anybody else seen these problems? Any solutions other than going back to Snow Leopard? (I did). But I'd like to use iCloud with iPad.

Hi Pete. The repair of disk permissions can help resolve  any application crashing or misbehaving.
As for Lion and the two camps, I think that is a reasonable observation. In my office we have about a dozen Mac's and about one third of those Mac's had problems after updating from 10.6 to 10.7. The main problem for these Mac's was a loss of wifi stability. But for the other two-thirds, Lion was a smooth transition.
Personally, my Lion experience was fine. But I did get a new i7 MacBook Pro with Lion already installed and only had to migrate my user data from a 10.6.8 TM backup.
So I think that is a key for Lion's operational success. A clean install of Lion on a new Mac would not cause too many operational issues. But an installation, or more correctly, an update to Lion from SL increased the chances of failure for some users - especially when old software & plugins resided on the Mac. And I would say that they were the people that you saw at the Apple store.
As for the "latest release of Lion fixed my problems" statement, my experience with these and other forums is that people mostly only go there to complain about the problems they are having. If they are having no problems then they either keep it to themselves or they try to help the users who are experiencing trouble...

  • Finder and Appleworks documents

I have a friend who had a great many files in Appleworks. We were able to install Appleworks on her imac with Leopard, and she has been gradually moving them into .doc format (copying the Appleworks file contents, pasting it into a clean Neooffice doc and then saving the Neoffice doc.) She saves them into the same folder that the Appleworks docs lived (with no extension).
What is weird is that the Appleworks documents appear to come and go almost at random. One time you can't see them in the folder where you know they were, the next time you CAN. You can find them with Spotlight. I've done the disk cleanup and reset permissions, etc, run Onyx on it. Still happens after multiple restarts and on multiple documents. It SEEMS to be just limited to Appleworks documents, which seem to appear and disappear.
We can live with this - she's about done with her copying at this point - but it IS a behavior I've not seen before. Has anyone else seen this? Does it portend something more ominous than just an old program not being properly recognized?

    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?[email protected]@.688fe733
    This contains the following topics....
    AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?
These symptoms are usually caused by a full Recent Items folder, or less commonly, a full Auto Save folder. Follow these steps to empty the Recent Items folder or Auto Save folder.
    1. Quit AppleWorks.
    2. Delete the contents of AutoSave and Recent Items (Folders)
    ~/Documents/AppleWorks User Data/Starting Points/Recent Items
    ~/Documents/AppleWorks User Data/AutoSave
    3. I t was also reported that deleting the following also solved a problem...
    ~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist
    4. If you do not use either the Recent Items or Auto Save (aka Auto Recovery) features of AppleWorks you can disable them from the AppleWorks Preferences.
THEN... if AppleWorks still will not launch:
    1. Open your Applications folder, and then the AppleWorks folder. You should see the AppleWorks icon and several "supporting folders" (AppleWorks Essentials, AppleWorks Extras, Starting Points, etc.)
    2. Control + Click on the AppleWorks icon and select "Show Package Contents"
    3. Double-click to open the Contents folder. Here's where the problem is.
4 You should see 3 folders and files. The folders should be named MacOS, MacOSClassic and Resources. In all the incidents I've seen, the "MacOS" folder has somehow been renamed with some long obscure cache-like number. Rename this folder MacOS (be sure to type it exactly like this, no space)
    5. Close the Contents folder and Package folder and try to launch Appleworks.
    6. Smile!
If this does not work for you, (there was one incident that the above fix did not for me), highlight the MacOS folder and duplicate it. Toss the original and rename the copy to Mac OS. For some reason the copy worked.

  • Snow Leopard, PHP, MySQL, Apache and Wordpress!

    Hi there,
It's taken me most of the day to work this out, so I thought I should post about it somewhere and here, on the Apple forum, is the ideal location.
I'm a web developer and love the fact that my MacBook works out of the box with a Unix webserver and with little effort, I was able to set up PHP and MySQL on it. I was delighted to hear that the new Snow Leopard was shipping with the latest and greatest of both. It wasn't quite that easy when it came down to running my test sites, one of which I'm working on is a Wordpress site. Far from being daunting, the solutions to the problems I had were quite simple. The issues arose from the OS not having much exposure yet and not many people having posted their experiences on the web. It was just time consuming.
I should mention at this point that this does require some tinkering with Terminal, but not so much as to cause damage if you do something wrong.
First off Apache. Thankfully this is as stable as it always has been. All this requires to activate it is to visit System Preferences > Sharing and switch on Web sharing. Bish-bosh, job done.
Next off PHP. If you open a Safari window and run your phpinfo.php file (where ever you have it saved. If you don't, they're out there, it's a tiny piece of code which you can use to find out your current php setup). You'll find that everything is superb! PHP 5.3! Excellent! Hang on, scroll down to the date and time section. Whoa! What's this big fat warning here.
That warning my friend, has been the bane of my misery all day. Wordpress hates it. HATES IT! It causes no end of grief. So what's the multi step, multi program solution?
Open your php.ini file and add the line:
    date.timezone=Country/City
(do a Google search for PHP Timezones and you will get the exact settings. It's not so good that it understands every city in the world. My setting was Europe/Dublin).
That's all. This will solve your issue of the timezone error everywhere. Stop and start Apache (System Preferences > Sharing, tick off and tick back on Web Sharing) and hey presto, error is gone.
Wait a minute, where the **** is my php.ini file. Unfortunately this is where you have to get your hands dirty. Your php.ini file is a system file which resides in the /etc/ folder. Open a terminal window and type exactly the following:
    cd /etc/
    cp php.ini.default php.ini
This makes the php.ini file from the default. This protects the original so if you ever need to create a new copy or if you make a mistake in the next steps, you can start again.
Next I'm going to tell you how to edit this file. This uses a program called vi (there are GUI editors out there that will save you this heartache, so if anyone knows any, please post in response. I think TextWrangler is one).
First you need to set the php.ini file so you can edit it. Type in exactly as follows:
    sudo chmod 777 php.ini
Sudo is the superuser commmand. It may not be needed, but stick it in anyway. If you are asked for a password, put in your normal password (that you would be asked for say if you were installing something you downloaded).
At the next prompt, type in:
    vi php.ini
This will open the php.ini file. Using the up and down keys, find a blank line in the file. You will notice that alot of the lines start with ';'. These are commented lines. Once you find a blank line, press 'i' to insert text. Your screen will now say '-- INSERT --' at the bottom in red. Type the following in exactly (you will NOT be able to cut and paste):
    ; Set PHP Default Timezone
    date.timezone=Europe/Dublin
Substitute "Europ/Dublin" with your own timezone. When you are done, press escape. Now type in the following:
    :wq!
The colon is important (not a typo on my part) as this tells vi you are going to run a command. You should now be back at your prompt. Now you need to reset the permissions on the file. Type the following:
    sudo chmod 444 php.ini
And that's it. That's your PHP setup and finished. If you run your phpinfo.php file now, you should see your timezone under the date and time where you were getting the error before.
Now the MySQL. This is a bit of fun because, even though MySQL ships with the system, it's not exactly set up correctly! So once again into terminal.
This time go to the local directory:
    cd /usr/local/
    If you type in:
    ls -al
You'll get a directory listing. This has the MySQL folder listed as mysql-5.0.77-osx10.5-x86 (or something! I did that from memory!). This IS the MySQL folder but if you, like me, had previously set the MySQL Preference Pane in your System Preferences, then it won't be able to access this. Type the following command:
    sudo cp -R /usr/local/mysql* /usr/local/mysql
This should copy everything into a folder called mysql. It takes a couple of seconds (first time on my machine it was a good 20 seconds) to run so be patient. Now you need to do the following:
    sudo chown mysql:mysql /usr/local/mysql
This sets the owner and group of the mysql files to 'mysql'. If you go back to your MySQL preference pane in System Preferences, you should now be able to start it (something weird about it makes it require to close and reopen the System Preferences window before it can open the MySQL pref pane. This is normal, just click ok).
The bit that got me here, is that I thought that my activation of the MySQL was actually a new install. I tried everything to change the root user and password for MySQL but in fact, if you had it installed on Leopard, prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard, all your users and passwords are the same. If you HAVEN'T installed it before, I recommend you read the Post Installation Customisation (section 2.3) on the manual for MySQL 5.1 on http://www.mysql.com
So that's about it. All that remains is to test Wordpress. I have phpmyadmin installed (I've heard CocoaMySQL is very good, like iTunes for db's so I'm gonna check that out later) and was able to create the new wordpress database. I changed the settings in the wp-configure.php file to match my setup but nothing worked. I changed the host from '127.0.0.1' back to 'localhost' (a common complaint of the wordpress setup) but no joy. Then I changed the host back to '127.0.0.1' and added the port :3306 (so the full host is '127.0.0.1:3306') and bingo, the install worked, my database setup and my test site worked.
So that's it! Many of you out there will say, why didn't you just use MAMP. I did use MAMP, but I also got the Timezone issues and it took far more tinkering and hacking to make it work. I decided that, as my lovely MacBook now running lovely Snow Leopard had the lovely newest versions of PHP and MySQL installed, I'd rather get them working than use a runaround with MAMP. I'm a happier camper for it.
I hope this helps some of you out there. I don't personally have a blog yet, but when I do, I'll post this up there for all to access. I may even add screen shots!!! But seriously, I hope this helps you all out with your installs. It's so handy to have all this stuff straightaway with Snow Leopard, it's just a matter of getting it to work.
    All the best now,
    T

Hmmmm... I did a clean drive install of Snow Leopard because I used to do it once a year with Windows and hadn't done it in 3 with my MBP.
First, my httpd.conf file had the line enabling PHP commented out, so when I went to see my simple file with phpinfo(), I saw the source. Saw your post, thought it was the timezone, fixed that (which will probably make wordpress happy when I get it running), and it still didn't work. Looked at the httpd.conf file, found that PHP was disabled by default, fixed that line, restarted the server, and my phpinfo() worked like a charm.
Also if you want to edit config files, I use TextWrangler's "open hidden files" option.
But... I have no /usr/local directory at all. Doesn't exist on my machine. Checked the options in the base install and MySQL isn't offered as an option. Checked the optional installs and MySQL isn't there. Even letting spotlight search for hidden files, the only files with MySQL in their name were from php scripts in my web folders.
There's some stuff about installing/compiling from source.
    http://hivelogic.com/articles/compiling-mysql-on-snow-leopard/
Dunno if I want to go down that road quite yet.

  • Download and Appleworks unable to open

On Dec. 3, 2006 I downloaded security update 2006-007 1.0 Since then each time I open an appleworks folder or letter, it opens than a small color wheel displays, spins around for about 15 to 20 minutes before the folder or letter will open and I can use it. I can't understand what's happening. Anyone know what's going on. I am on a G-4, system Mac OS X 10.4.7, 1GB memory, 63.69 GB free on HD. Thanks

    Hi dj,
Welcome to the discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
After any major installation it's always a good idea to Repair Permissions. Launch Disk Utility (found in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder), click the First Aid tab, then click the Repair Permissions button.
Slowdowns (and full stoppages) of AppleWorks are most often caused by the Recent Items bug. AppleWorks makes an alias to every file you save, and keeps that item in your (AppleWorks) Recent Items folder. Due to an apparent coding error, AW completely ignores the number of items you've told it to keep here, and considers "Recent" in what appears to be a geologic time scale, and never gets around to removing the aliases from the folder. The folder quickly reaches a threshold (which seems to get lower with each new version of the operating system) at which AppleWorks itself begins to slow down and display the spinning beach ball icon. Eventually, the ‘slowdown’ can become a freeze, or even a failure to start.
The solution is pretty simple—regularly clean out the Recent Items folder. AW keeps one for each user. You can find yours here:
Users > yourname > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent Items
There are three articles in the User Tips Library dealing with Recent Items.
<a href=http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID =122003>Dale Gillard - AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?
    <a href=http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID =121796>Dale Gillard - Recent items not visible/updated
    <a href=http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID =121997>Yvan Koenig - No More Recent Items
And general problems with AppleWorks (or any application) can often be cured by deleting the preferences files, which are susceptible to corruption. AppleWorks will create new (clean) versions the next time you run it. You’ll find details in Peggy’s User Tips post, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly.
    Regards,
    Barry
