Leopard 10.5.4 & logic 8.02

Dear All
There's a previous post to say Protools is running happilly with this combination
Has anyone got any good / bad experiences or issues with updating to Leopard 10.5.4 - I'm currently sitting at 10.5.2 with logic 8.02?
I'm about to install PLAY with Kontakt 3 but wonder if general Core Audio users seem to run this combo OK with latest 8 Core Macs?
Thanks and best wishes
Dick

The combo update allows you to skip previous buggy version
with Leopard one big problems is arrived...
it is not the same as Tiger...
it is focused in repairing permission features...
this function is totally different from previos OS X version...
(also the system is totally different... there is no a PPC version and a different Intel version... it is Just Leopard! It Works on ANY supported MAC with no different kernel as Tiger was)
there are some permission that cannot be reparied in version 10.5.1 and 10.5.2...
there is no way...
this issue cause many malfunction and slow graphic issue...
the ONLY WAY to "repair" that is:
Make a FRESH installation... with "archive and instal option + saving users setting!
after Leopard has been installed... run 10.5.4 combo update!!!
this procedure makes you able to be sure to skip Leopard Buggy versions (that was made for commercial reason in order to force the G5 owners to buy a new Mac Pro)...(this is only my personal opinion... obviously, it is not an Apple
official announcement )

• Kernel Panic Snow Leopard 10.6.4 + Logic Studio 9.1.1+ Motu firewire driver

Strange Kernel Panics are happening to my MacbookPRo early'08
I've just installed snow leopard, updated it to 10.6.4
Installed Logic Studio 9 and updated it to 9.1.1
Then I have a MOTU 896HD, installed drivers
then restarted my mac and there they're, kernel panic at thge startup, just after the first sound of powering on.
this is the kernel panic:

What can it be?
Thanks a lot,
Best Regards,

The info is linked above. I agree that that info should be on the download page, but not having that info there doesn't mean the drivers aren't 64 bit.
http://www.motu.com/techsupport/technotes/64-bit-mac-compatibility
Hardware
When using the 64-bit kernel in Mac OS X v10.6 and later, 64-bit hardware drivers must be used. MOTU FireWire/USB2 audio interfaces, PCI-424 audio interfaces, and USB MIDI interfaces can be used with the 32- or 64-bit kernel. *The minimum driver versions required for use with the 64-bit kernel are:*
*FireWire/USB2 Audio 1.5 (37320)*
PCI-424 Audio 1.5 (38352)
USB MIDI 1.5 (37320)
The current version available for download (after you log in) is 1.5.38352, so according to MOTU it is a 64 bit driver and runs on the 64 bit kernel.
Download here, you may need to log in. Forget about the two pages you linked to, I'm not sure how you found them, but they are old and are no longer relevant. http://www.motu.com/download/downloadmatching_downloads.html?platform_id=2&productid=14
The link to the download itself is here, again this link may not work if you don't log in first.
http://s3.amazonaws.com/motu/downloads/firewire/MOTUAudioInstaller-1.5.38352.zip
I downloaded the latest and tested it on 64 bit kernel and it worked fine, so yes, they are in fact 64 bit drivers. If you are still skeptical, just download for yourself and boot into the 64 bit kernel, you'll see that they work fine.

• Does Leopard alter anything on logic board?

I have a new MacBook Pro that came with 10.5.1 pre installed. I loaded Avid Media Composer but found issues with running it in 10.5
I erased the hard disk and installed 10.4.11. But now Media Composer will not run properly.
Does the install of Leopard alter any chips or firmware on the logic board that prevents some apps from running when you downgrade to 10.4?

In general you cannot "degrade" the OS on a pre-installed Apple computer. There may be things on you computer that Tiger does not "understand" and there are no more Tiger upgrades.
For example, your new computer is a true 64-bit box, taking full advantage of the 64-bits, and Leopard is a true 64-bit OS. You have now installed a 32-bit OS on it, so you should certainly expect some problems. Tiger would probably run on an earlier 64-bit MBP, like mine which came with Tiger, but the newer ones may simply not fully support a 32-bit OS anymore.
For example regarding your question - the new MBPs may have a logic board that requires a 64-bit OS in order to run properly. Apple has phased out all 32-bit hardware and software.

• Leopard vs Tiger with Logic/to switch or not to switch

That is the question. Tis nobler to stay with said tried and true tiger or switch to the inevitable new cat on the block.
Hamlet: 1600 and something......... or was it 1500???? 1400??? AD?? BC??? I digress....

Speaking as someone who has recently been forced to go to Leopard by buying a new Mac Pro (my G5 died), I would recommend staying on Tiger for the time being.
I've spent two full days reinstalling and reauthorizing everything from scratch, and am now effectively dead in the water since the following products just don't work right now:
Waves (Gold, V-series, API)
Duende
Access Virus TI
Guitar Rig 2
Garritan (Kontakt 2 player) (This plays but I can't authorize it)
Waves just isn't supported on Leopard yet (I've read that some people have made it work; I can't). Duende doesn't work on either 4/8-core Macs or Leopard, so I'm down on two counts there. The others should allegedly work, but don't, and I have calls into tech support for all of them.
I have read reports (here and elsewhere) of problems with the UAD-1, which is a real killer for me. I haven't installed mine yet to try it.
That doesn't leave me with much, so I'm just sitting here waiting right now...

• Will Leopard 10.5 run Logic Pro 9?

Just would like to know if anyone is using Logic Pro 9 with Leopard10.5.?

Howdy,
Running 9.02, the update listed 10.5.8 but never tried to install it over 10.5.7. Maybe 10.5.8 was just the Apple recommendation?
I maintain a few other machines for individuals and studios... I seem to recall, starting with update 9.1.1 10.5.8 was required, if not Logic possibly Mainstage or Soundtrack Pro.

• Logic 8.02 and Leopard 10.5.4

i just dared to update my Leopard as i was having major issues (i run Logic with TDM and DTDM under PT 7.4.2) and it seems to have solved all my problems. Much better performance on loading and no more DTDM errors on very loading a Logic session. Kontakt 2 and PLAY also seems to run just fine opposed to the previous versions combo. Also switching from PT to Logic seems pretty stable. My headaches seem over for now, i ain't touching it for a while.
I used the combo update from the Apple site just to make sure as it seems to be more thourough than updating thru Software Update menu. (you can google the issue and read about this, i can now confirm it seems better as my last update was somehow tainted and utterly unstable unlike most people are experiencing 10.5.3 and 8.02)

I've been trying to get Logic to work with DAE/TDM in Leopard on a Mac Pro now for months! How did you do it?? Been searching the internet for answers ever since I started, and would highly appreciate your response.
My most obvious problems are: No audio from Aux (EXS, ESB) or instruments. The whole program is "struggling" with awful "framerates" . . just moving the pointer takes forever.
When in Core-audio everything works fine.
I have reinstalled Leopard, Pro Tools and Logic several times, with no luck.
Please tell me how you did it!
Thx in advance!!
/K

• Logic 8 and possible Snow Leopard Issue

Ok folks, this is my first post/problem on the apple discussion boards....here it goes. Hopefully someone can tell me what my problem:
Specs: MacBook Pro 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM: Operating on Snow Leopard.
Logic Pro 8.0.2; Lexicon Omega USB as the core audio.
Problem: First of all, I work primarily with MIDI and some vocal audio. Ever since I installed snow leopard on my computer Logic has been giving me a lot of problems. My CPU can't even handle one VST plugin with a couple effects on it now. Sometimes even just playing an instrument, one of the ram sticks will spike and either crash logic or say it's overloaded and cut out the audio. This happens either with a single instrument, or with a sequence I created, it can't play the loop back all the way through without saying "core audio overload". I primarily use Komplete 5 software instruments by Native Instruments, and I know these eat up CPU but it was never like this before I installed Snow Leopard. I tried dumbing down the I/O buffer size, and process buffer range, but none of these seem to make a difference. Why is it only one CPU bar that spikes? I'm not running anything else on the computer at the time. Is 2GB of ram not enough anymore?
One more issue that might help someone troubleshoot this...actually playing the instruments isn't as much of an obstacle as playback. Also, any session that I've made under the old operation system, if I try and open it up and play it, it either overloads IMMEDIATELY or the actual software instruments don't play, and the only way to make them play is to rewire them by taking them off and putting them back on again.
I can usually troubleshoot these things myself but for some reason I'm scared that it's a RAM issue and that I will need to buy a new computer to continue my producing. Because 2 is as high as this macbook goes, right? I hope it's just a USB thing and I need to upgrade my interface or switch to firewire.
Can anyone offer some advice or a solution to this problem?
Thanks,
J

wow, thanks guys.

• Leopard - Logic 8 - but no EZDrummer

Hi,
completely clean install of Leopard.
new install of Logic 8 Studio (All Disks).
Install of EZDrummer.
Now Logic cant find any EZDrummer AU
Ableton Live can find EZDrummer...
Anyone else experiencing similar??
Thanks.

I think I've got a solution:
I did a clean install for leopard this morning, then installed Logic Pro 8, then as far as EZ Drummer is concerned:
Installed 1.0
Then update to 1.0.4 (couldn't find my 1.1.1 install dmg in mybackup)
I started Logic 8, and mentionned above, nothing showed up (even in garageband)
I closed the apps, and *move both "AudfhV.component and EzDrummer.component" from HD>Lib>Audio to USER>Lib>Audio*
Logic now sees the plugin EZ Drummer... (don't ask me why!) And then you can authorize fine!
PS: I also noticed something:
When the AU Validator started scanning for the PSP audioware plugs I installed, I thought it was stuck, but it wasn't, +it was just waiting for me to enter the SN+. *But you can't see that window buried under Logic startup unless you click in the dock on the AUValidator icon!*
So if your progress bar seems stuck, it's not! it's just waiting for you! (I first thought all my psp plugs wouldnt work in L8&Leopard!)
PS2: would someone hook me up with the 1.1.1 update of EZ?

• Is it possible to have a Lion OS and snow Leopard using the bootcamp?

I bought a macbook pro 13" 2011. I have other programs that will run only in Snow Leopard OS just like Logic Pro 8. Is it possible to install snow leopard aside from my current Lion OS? How to install? Is it possible to use both OS in my mac? I need your help. Thanks!

OOPS!  I just noticed you actually have Lion, and want to go back to Snow Leopard.  That may or may not work.  The first test would be to see if you can boot your new MacBook 13" from a Snow Leopard installation DVD, or from another Mac in Firewire Target mode, or a bootable external Snow Leopard disk (SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner created).
If that works, then Yes, but before trying anything make sure you have full backups (SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, or even TimeMachine).  2 copies would be even better.
Bootcamp is not needed.  Bootcamp is an aid to installing and running the Windows OS
You can install Lion on an exteernal disk, and boot from that by holding down the Option key during boot.
You can repartition your internal disk so you have 2 partitions.  You restore your Snow Leopard backup to one partition, and install Lion on the other.  You can choose to boot into either partition by holding own the Option key during boot.  You could also use System Preferences -> Startup Disk to switch between Snow Leopard and Lion.
You can use virtual machine software (VMware Fusion, Parallels, VirtualBox) on Snow Leopard (does not work the other way), then install Lion in a virtual machine (your MacBook should have a minimum of 4GB if you are going to try this).  This would allow you to run Snow Leopard and Lion at the same time.
You could buy one of those kits that replaces your DVD drive with a Solid State Disk (SSD), and instlal Lion on the SSD, and again boot holding the Option key or use Startup Disk system pref to switch between the OS versions.

• Error after updating to logic 9.1

So i just updated Logic to 9.1. After the update i started logic and the first thing i see is this error :

What does this mean ??
Thx

I followed this :
+I have found a way to fix this "coreFoundationUnknownErr" error with Logic 9.1 though, at least on my system.+
+First you remove these:+
+/Library/Application Support/ProApps/Logic Studio System ID+
+/Library/Application Support/ProApps/ProAppsSystemID+
+Then launch your Logic 9.0.2 FIRST, enter your serial and continue. Open a song and make sure it all works. Quit and then launch Logic 9.1. Should work perfectly after that. Remember, this is all in 10.5.8 Leopard NOT Snow Leopard. I have zero issues so far in 10.6.2 Snow Leopard. I found that if your try to launch 9.1 right after removing your ID's, you still get the same error. This seems to only work if you launch 9.0.2 first.+
+Before I did all this I tested the 9.1 app from my Snow Leopard drive to make sure it wasn't the Logic app. From within 10.6.2 I went to MusicOS/Applications/ (my other 10.5 Leopard drive) and tried Logic 9.1 it booted perfectly so I knew it wasn't the actual app itself, therefor it must be either an ID issue or the frameworks files were broken. I didn't think it was the frameworks as both Logic 8.0.2/9.0.2 worked fine so I went with the ID issue. I have not launched 8.0.2 since I removed the ID's yet, but I don't really have a reason to as 9.0.2 has been reliable for me thus far. I am now going to run 9.1 and hope it continues to be stable for me too!+
But since i already installed the 9.1 update how can i op go back to the 9.0.2. ?

• No Sound in Omnispehere & Trillian after the last update in Logic 8

Hi,
I'm on Leopard 10.5.8 and Logic 8,
After install of both Omnisphere and Trillian, I have no sound on both plug-ins.
I have everything on my internal HD, installed to the same path like previous updates.
Updates:
Omnisphere; Software 1.2.0n
Patch Library 1.2.0
then Library 1.0.2
Trillian:
Software 1.2.0n
Patch Library 1.2.0
Library 1.0.1
Did any of you experience the same?
Does anyone has a clue what can cause this sound mute?
Kind regards,
Jorge
Ps: I thought it was a 64 bit issue,
but Logic 8 and Leopard are 32bit,
only Logic 9 and Snow Leopard are 64 Bit

Hi Regina,
Thanks for sharing, I can hear the sounds loaded from the patch browser with the preview button only,
the only channel that my keyboard triggs sound is Channel 1 Only, any other channel nope ( I'm loading in stereo). I try to reset it to all or any other channel with no luck ( you had ; ) .
Anyway if if load the top browser from default to any preset (in live or stack mode) everything is fine on all channels go figure? On my first try, I've got some nasty distorted sound, then quit and restart Logic and the distorted issue was clear.
I'm in touch with the spectra support team, as soon as they give me some more clues I'll keep you posted ok?
Thanks a lot for your tips.
Cheers,
Jorge

• Line 6 KB37 Midi Nightmare in Snow Leopard

Hi
I bought myself a new imac i3 yesterday for music production. I have been using a G5 with Leopard for years using Logic 8/Reason with my Line 6 KB37. I have installed on the new mac all the line 6 drivers and audio plays from the Line 6 fine when I load a track and hit the space bar, but the Line 6 will not transmit midi notes to logic or Reason when I press the keyboard or contral buttons. On the transport bar in Logic where you would normaly see the numbers change with each press of the keys or transport bar I get nothing. Any suggestions.

Mac Music Man wrote:
When I press Test nothing happens except the test icon going blue. There is no arrow on the bottom of the KB37 icon.
No arrow at all? Try creating a new MIDI config, see if the KB37 shows arrows there. What happens when you doubleclick the KB37 icon?
Line 6 say the latest drive is SL compatible (4.7.1) and it is installed.
That should be OK then.
Have deleted and reinstalled twice. How can I turn midi off/on?
I don't know - what does the KB37 manual(s) say?
I am fairly sure this is an OS issue because I simply took off my desk the old G5 and put in its place the new i3 and loaded the KB37 drivers in after a OS update and plugged in the KB37.
Hmm... the G5 is a PPC machine, the i3 is an Intel machine, if you just copied over all your software there is bound to be trouble... or did you freshly install everything on the i3?
I did get it working for about 5 mins in Logic immediatley after the driver installation but once I closed down Logic and reopened it all midi send transmissions were gone and have not returned since either in Logic or Reason.
Looks like a driver issue.
Have you tried repairing permissions/disks in *Disk Utility?*

• Logic crashes during "initializing CoreAudio" after installing OSX 10.5.1

Hi,
After installing Leopard (10.5.1) Logic Pro 8 crashes during "initializing CoreAudio". (Logic Pro 7 freezes)
On OSX 10.4 it worked great.
As far as I can see now Logic Pro is the only program with this problem.
(RAX works fine!)
Is there someone with the same issue?
Or with a sollution?
Greetings,
Michiel

Thanks for your reaction.
Althoug it turned out that I didn't had any digidesign Plugins it indeed was an plugin compatibillity problem.
Rewire was the one.
An update of Melodyne did the trick.
Thanks again (stupid enough I hadn't thought about 3th party plugin compatibillity at all)
Greetings,
Michiel
*For people with the same problem, reading this toppic, but without Melodyne (and its update)
deleting the components from the folder
"Library/Application Support/Propellerhead Software/ReWire"
works as well, but of course disables the use of Rewire.

• Logic Pro / Protools - G5 and Mac Pro?

I have a G5 with 8Gb (so still an ok machine) with many VST's and EW library through Kompakt player etc... this also runs Logic 8.02 and Ableton 7 well on Tiger 10.4.11
I have now just bought a Mac Pro 3.0Ghz with 10Gb and Protools HD, on Leopard 10.5.5 also with a few AU/VST's and some TDM plug ins running the same Logic 8.02 and Ableton as above...
I should also point out that I have 2 x 20" Cinema Displays..
Now I dont know the best way to connect these if i want to use them together and the best working way of doing this?
I have one set of Keyboard/Mouse and 1 x USB M-Audio Keyboard too - is there a way to share them ?
I was thinking of selling on the G5 and TRY to migrate my libraries to the Mac Pro but i dont think i'll get much for it and it is stable with some good VST's using Tiger.
So I have a few questions! :
1. Whats the best way to connect these to share my 1 keys/mouse and the USB Radium Keyboard? I did try teleport but couldn't get this working after a while and was a bit reluctant with the KVM switch route?
2 - Do I keep the G5 for the sequencing and Logic/Abelton (composing) and use the Mac Pro for Recording/Protools? - Seems a bit of a waste with a 10Gb Mac Pro! but the G5 is stable...
3 - I have been using 2 screens on the G5, but now do I use 1 screen per machine? or is there another utility that I can swap between the two and have 2 screens for whichever machine Im working on??
Sorry for all the questions!
I do think I have sorted a "file share" folder if i go down the 2 machines route whereby I can drop and access files into desktop folders on each machine, and use them on either
Any ideas, thoughts, ?? - just want to get the best of the two machines incase I can't (or decide not) to sell the G5..
Thanks!

Hi,
your question is interesting But I don't want to replay your specific question... There are anthyng wrong in your desire to use 2 Macs... BUT
I have worked on a similar environment in the past...
I'm talking about G4 400 + a Pentium 3 PC with tascam Giga studio...
I suggest to avoid to use 2 computers...
Logic is able to work without Pro Tools...
Pro Tools is obsolete and you are forced to stay on Leopard 10.5.5...
Why?
Logic works on Leopard 10.5.6...
My G5 is faster than ever with Leopard 10.5.6
Logic 8.0.2 is 1000 times more STABLE on Leopard.. (I never get any Logic crash with G% and 10.5.6!!!
I cannot see any reason to work with a G5 and Tiger.. (if you don't need to use Wa**s demo reset, or other crack sh*t stuffs)
I suggest to install 10.5.6 in your G5!
Leopard and Logic comes with Maximum sound quality... Pro Tools is a step Back to the past!...
Just my personal opinion... but I'm not alone about this point!
Using 2 Computers on a Digital studio is a obsolete way to work!
too much problems...
too much time waste for syncing
DOUBLE PERCENTAGE OF bugs, crash, and malfunction
Double percentage to loose your mind, to go crazy... to much distraction... I want stay focused to my composition without problems...
you need to use Remote Desktop
youneed to use Sharing network
you will loose about 50% of CPU power processing.
ON OS X SHARING network must be turned OFF to avoid POPs, Clicks, Audio drops and so ON!
Anyway you are free to testing by yourself...
Good Luck
G
